h16his there any RDP client available that supports Multiple Monitors?00:00
kenny__hi guys, new to irc in general, but heard there are great communities.  Do I just ask a question here?00:00
ObrienDavepretty much, yes00:01
daftykinskenny__: no, this is for ubuntu support only. you can go and ask in #freenode though00:01
daftykins(for anything else)00:01
kenny__It's a ubuntu question.00:01
reisioh16h: VNC00:01
daftykinsyay \o/00:01
daftykinsthen please do00:01
ObrienDavethen ask away :)00:01
h16hreisio: I'm looking for a solution that doesn't require multiple monitors to be plugged physically into that machine00:02
h16hreisio: in other words, I am trying to remote to a laptop, but use both monitors from host machine00:03
reisioh16h: what? :p00:03
nith1210h16h: If you're ok with shared mouse/keyboard but different programs on laptop and host machine, you can look into Synergy.00:03
kenny__Cool, very friendly. :)  The border for apps (specifically Firefox) is VERY thin.  Hard to grab.  Especially, using seamless mode.  Anyone know a way to get that thicker to make it easier to grab?00:04
reisioh16h: you want a single "screen" stretched across two monitors, or vice versa?00:04
h16hnith1210: not exactly what I need00:04
=== rrrre445534 is now known as the_mighty_bogan
kenny__Tried this, but doesn't work. "Another workaround is to hack the theme itself. For the Ambiance theme edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-theme-1.xml and in the section starting <frame_geometry name="frame_geometry_normal" change left_width, right_width and bottom_height from 1 to 3."00:04
nith1210kenny__: If you hold ALT then RIGHT click and drag, it'll resize a window no matter where you grab it00:04
h16hreisio: i am remoting to a laptop running Windows 7 from my Ubuntu machine. Ubuntu has two monitors, the laptop obviously only has one00:05
sludgefrogWhy is ‘continue’ greyed out in the install dialog, page “install Ubuntu alongside windows 8” ,etc etc.?  It doesn’t matter what I choose.00:05
kenny__this is for fool-proof end-users..so no keyboard combos.00:05
h16hreisio: if i were running Windows on my host as well, I could enable that remote session to work across both monitors (extended desktop), not stretching or mirroring etc00:05
reisioh16h: okay00:06
reisioh16h: you can do that, yes00:06
reisioh16h: you can have VNC start two X servers, or twinview or whatever it would normally for two monitors00:06
reisiooh sorry the remote is Windows :p00:07
reisiohrmmm00:07
h16hso basically I'm looking for the "use All monitors" option found in mstsc (Microsoft), in some solution now that I've transitioned to Ubuntu =)00:07
squintynith1210,  two boxes here one running gnome3 and the other unity... neither responding to expanding on alt right click drag.  :)00:08
reisioh16h: hrmmm, I guess you should check with xrdp first00:08
h16hreisio: thanks00:08
Bashing-omtj00:09
docmurI have minidlna installed and for some reason only 13 folders out of 200 are showing up on my xBox, has anyone seen this?  I'm running 14.0400:10
daftykinsdocmur: you shared 200 folders?00:10
docmurwell in minidlna, private to my network00:10
daftykinsdocmur: why not put those 200 in one folder and share... one? :D00:11
reisioh16h: I just read that 'realvnc has the use all monitors option', whether that applies to windows boxes too is another matter :) would still check xrdp first00:11
h16hreisio: thanks reading now =)00:11
nith1210squinty: try ALT + MouseWheel instead.00:11
reisioh16h: so you wanted remote windows fake monitor one on real monitor 1, and remote windows fake monitor two on real monitor 2, same session?00:13
nith1210squinty: ALT+MouseWheel on unity and gnome3, ALT+RightClick on KDE (atleast on my box)00:13
kenny__anyone know how to make app (firefox specifically) BORDERS larger so that it's easier to grab for resizing?  No keyboard shortcuts please.00:18
daftykinsno idea, always seen that as an issue with Ubuntu though00:18
daftykinscan't believe it passes user experience testing00:18
kenny__oh, so it's a known thing?00:19
kenny__darn...00:19
daftykinswell, i'm familiar with it being a real pain to try and grab the window resize controls, yeah00:19
kenny__my granny has a hard time resizing.00:19
daftykinsi don't know about being 'known' known :)00:19
h16hreisio: yes, exactly. but i figured it out ..thanks to some searching00:19
h16hreisio: using freerdp, i can do "xfreerdp -u username --no-nla -f RemoteIPAddress"00:20
h16hit's the --no-nla that makes it work..no idea what that means but I'm about to find out lol00:20
=== toto is now known as Guest58521
daftykinsno network level authentication00:21
reisioh16h: cool, is that even in the docs? :p00:22
reisiomy freerdp doesn't even have a man page :p00:22
reisioalthough _usually_ rdesktop's man page applies00:22
h16hreisio: well, not exactly lol, not that combination of options to make this work atleast00:23
squintyi will second that on window resize being a pain too.00:24
reisioh16h: how not?00:26
h16hreisio: sorry it had nothing to do with --no-nla (disabling TLS), as long as I use -f (full screen), i get what I want00:28
h16hreisio: i was getting a different behavior last night, wth..i must be confused00:28
reisiooh...00:28
reisioso just with -f it covers both monitors, but they act as separate monitors should?00:28
h16hreisio: sorry ignore everything..LOL . FreeRDP is perfect. Exactly, it covers both monitors but behave as separate monitors as well with -f00:29
reisioh16h: oh neat, I had no idea :p00:29
h16hthis is great. I like to come home and dock my laptop (just network and power), then remote into it from my main machine with nice huge 27" screens00:29
reisioI'm sure anyone who'd used freerdp/rdesktop with two monitors could've told you that :p00:29
h16hthe dock is connected to a hardware vpn hence all this crap00:30
reisioyeah, windows, crap :p00:30

h16hRemmina doesn't work this way, that much I do remember00:30
reisiowell that's a frontend for rdesktop/freerdp00:31

hydraidm801tasksel is for installing a server the easy way01:21
penguin1@Sachiru using sudo apt-get update && apt-get install bash01:22
SachiruAssuming that the upgrade is done the proper way (via apt-get upgrade), I don't see any issues with other running services01:22

karexHi everybody, if you install (or just copy/extract) an application not by using apt-get or dpkg, where do you place it? "/opt"? "$HOME/.something"?03:33
reisiokarex: preferably /dev/null :)03:34
reisiokarex: $HOME/.something is probably the least awful way03:34
reisioif it even allows that03:34
jengarnormally opt is used fo this03:34
nith1210karex: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LinuxFilesystemTreeOverview03:35
reisiowell, normally opt is used for things still done by the package manager :p03:35
reisioif you keep it in ~/, you have a chance of being able to clean up its mess in future03:36
nith1210karex: Although, I agree with reisio if it's for your own usage exclusively. If its for group usage, you may want to create your own package for it if you can (even if you don't distribute it).03:36
karexreisio: nith1210 's link says "/opt can be used to store addition software for your system, which is not handled by the package manager."03:38

VanessaEok folks, I'm sure this has been discussed to death, but there's so much outdated info and unanswered questions on the web that I'm lost.  Without invoking MakeMKV, AnyDVD, or anything involving ripping or Windows, can someone please tell me how to play a blu ray disc in Linux?  at this point I've got VLC, libaacs, libbdplus (compiled), and one or two libs.04:22
VanessaEI'm able to play blu-rays, but if they have BD+, their video is garbled.04:22
VanessaEaudio thereof is still okay (if not BD+, the video plays fine)04:22
VanessaEmy reading seems to imply I'm missing some kind of "conversion tables"?  but nothing seems to explain how the heck to get these files, or whether I'm supposed to download them at all.04:23
sethjVanessaE, while I don't have any blueray disks to tinker with, I doubt getting it to work is possible. A good How To Geek article here http://www.howtogeek.com/138969/why-watching-dvds-on-linux-is-illegal-in-the-usa/ explains the situation with DVDs and FOSS quite well.04:26

VanessaEsomsip: I'm quite aware; I've long since figured out DVDs, and I can play blu-rays now as well.  it's just this stupid BD+ crap.  I figured someone here had figured it out04:29
somsipVanessaE: no idea myself. I was just aware of the factoid that might have had something helpful on it04:29
sethjAccording to wikipedia  BD+ is just a newer form of encryption. Kinda resets back at square 1 for the whole crack DVDs thing.04:30
VanessaEsethj: BD+ has allegedly been cracked, so I've read, but everyone seems to want to use those two programs I mentioned, or otherwise do it in Windows, all of which are out of the question for me04:32

visceraOh wait04:39

visceraYeah, both are running as superuser04:40
VanessaEsethj: I'm actually confused about that - some of the sites I've read claim it simply won't work, some say I need some kind of conversion tables (but then of course they don't say where they come from), and some say it should just work.04:41
VanessaEI know dvdcss just works since it reads the keys from the disc, and a standalone bluray player does the same thing, that's why I'm confused as to what REALLY is needed here04:41
VanessaEone page (I think it was from the Arch Wiki) implied getting them out of MakeMKV but that sounds totally wrong since the site for that package as neither a Linux version for download, nor an obvious separate package for those tables.04:42
VanessaEso those tables sounds like the wrong thing.04:43

pali1iptable: this is my last chance to make it work on this old PC08:19
iptablepali1, find an old version of skype and install it natively. running via an emulator will be slooooooooow (not just slow, sloooooow)08:20
pali1now it doesn't give me error, just hangs after launching the command08:20
iptablepali1, you are going to be trying to emulate an actual CPU feature :D Don't. get a version of skype that works for you.08:20
pali1i will try, but i read that they wont allow to login with an older version08:21
iptablepali1, from official docs, only video calling won't work without SSE2 on skype. have you actually tried installing and running skype without qemu? qemu skype will be too slow for video anyways08:21
Ca11umIn Ubuntu 14.04 is it possible to change the login screen so it prompts for a username and password? Eventually the system will have hundreds of users, so obviously a 'classic login' would be better than selecting your username from a list.08:21
auscompgeekCa11um: which DM?08:23
Ca11umauscompgeek: sorry, DM? Not used to using Linux.08:23
iptablewhich translates to: lightDM - standard - i.e. whatever came with ubuntu 14.0408:24
auscompgeekCa11um: display manager08:24
auscompgeekiptable: probably, but gotta make sure :)08:24
Ca11umWhere can I find that information? It's Ubuntu 14.04.1 with the latest updates, running on a VMWare system.08:24
iptablepali1, no, skype 4.2 won't work. it won't login, that's correct. skype 4.3 needs SSE2. early version of 4.3 (4.3.0) required SSE2 for video only. Now they implemented checks to allow only SSE2 machines to run the binary08:25
auscompgeekCa11um: are you using the normal (Unity) Ubuntu desktop release?08:25
iptablepali1, basically: you are using microsoft bull* software which forces you to upgrade for no real reason other than $$$. Ms wants you to buy a new machine, meaning you will buy OEM version of windows 8.1 that comes with it automatically.08:25
iptablepali1, and yes, qemu version is too slow to be called usable08:26
wheeeiBen64 I've read the ubuntu-faq about the swap-file but their examples is for 1gb/2gb, If I got 12gb ram should my swap-file still be around 12gb in order to hibernate without a issue?08:26
iptablewheeei, no. if you wantto hibernate, you need more than 12GB swap08:26
Ben64wheeei: if you want to hibernate, swap needs to be equal or over the amount of ram08:26
iptablewheeei, rule of thumb would be 1.5x.08:26
Ca11umauscompgeek: Yes, the default08:26
pali1iptable: since ive launced the command, it doesnt showed up till now08:26
iptablewheeei, so for 12GB RAM, I would say 18GB swap.08:27
pali1iptable: i need video calling on this old PC, what alternatives i have?08:27
wheeeiiptable really? that's not what the documenation says https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq08:27
iptablepali1, let it run for a few days. it will show up in a week or so... then try chatting lol08:27
iptablewheeei, if you swap stuff out (and it does swap out, even if you are not over ram), suddenly your hibernate will not work. minimum I would advise for hibernation to work at almost all times would be 14GB or SWAP.08:28
pali1iptable: anything else beside skype?08:28
iptablepali1, your choices are: upgrade or not use skype08:28
auscompgeekCa11um: take a look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LightDM then08:28
iptablepali1, google hangouts is one08:28
wheeeiiptable ok, I will go with your recommendation08:28
Miaany top or htop alternative for monitoring through ssh?08:28
iptablewheeei, but with a 12GB-RAM machine I don't believe you can't spare 18 or 20GB for swap to make sure it ALWAYS works with hibernation.08:29
iptableMia, what's wrong with running top through ssh?08:29
karexiptable: swap now can be in the file, so if I don't need hibernation, is there any reason to make a swap partition?08:29
iptablekarex, the user specifically asked for hibernation actually08:29
karexiptable: this is a different question08:30
iptablekarex, also, files do get fragmented, so swap on partition will give you better performance.08:30
karexiptable: :D not his/her questioin08:30
wheeeiiptable well I was going to only use 100gb for linux including home. I guess 30gb for root 18gb for swap and the rest for home08:30
iptablekarex, then again, if you use ext4 and force a continous trunk of space, shouldn't be an issue. with 12GB of RAM you should never run out (unless you use chrome :P)08:31
iptablekarex, on my laptop, on which i do NOT hibernate, I got 8GB RAM and 2GB swap and it works. If I run a huge process count for extended periods of time, including virtualization, it does get close though...08:32
auscompgeekMia: htop does show RAM usage in MB.08:32
iptableso does free -m :P08:32

iptablewheeei, you can stuff any large files on your ntfs which ubuntu does support08:33
karexiptable: "I got 8GB RAM and 2GB swap and it works" does "it" refers to hibernation?08:33
wheeeiyeah that was my plan, thanx!08:33

DPT=6379, which is the port for redis. Despite this, it appears to work and I can telnet to that port from the clients without being blocked. Strange. However, every few days there one or two minutes where it does actually appear to be blocked, or at least can't get connected. UFW08:39

ubottuFile ld-linux.so found in libc6, libc6-armel-armhf-cross, libc6-armel-cross, libc6-armhf-armel-cross, libc6-armhf-cross, manpages, manpages-fr, manpages-ja, manpages-pl08:46
iptableauscompgeek, ah yes. I like cinnamon software centre myself :D08:46
jpentlandiptable, no the file isn't there08:46
iptablejpentland, ls -l /lib/ld-linux.so*08:47
iptablethe user will already have libc or his system wouldn't work08:47
jpentlandiptable, still nothing - locate ld-linux.so shows me "/usr/share/man/man8/ld-linux.so.8.gz"08:48
Ben64jpentland: so what system are you running08:48
jpentlandiptable, and yeah I tried installing libc6 but I had it already -08:48
jpentlandBen64, Ubuntu 14.0408:48
iptablejpentland, what's the architecture?08:48
jpentlandiptable, x86_6408:49
eeeejpentland: do you have /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 ?08:49
Ben64sudo apt-get install libc6:amd64 libc6:i386 libc6-dbg:amd64 libc6-dev:amd64 libc6-i38608:49
iptable:)08:49
jpentlandiptable, yes i have that08:50
eeeejpentland: try to copy it to /lib/ so that your binary works, if you can't set any arguments or recompile08:50
bcvery1I'm trying to set up a network printer (windows network) using system-config-printer on 14.04, I getting this error: pastebin.com/9jT1i9Qv08:50
jpentlandBen64, you are probably right that I need to install the 32-bit libs08:50
iptablejpentland, the binary is 32 bit one. you need to also install libc6:i386 to get 32-bit library for libc08:50
jpentlandiptable, yeah I'm trying that now08:51
iptablejpentland, run Ben64 command. that  will resolve this issue. you might need ot install more 32 bit libs after that. but yeah, that's the way08:51
jpentlandiptable, ok thanks08:52
iptablejpentland, and don't use locate. it's not reliable, as you can see. always use find for full results. sudo find / -name "ld-linux.so*"08:52
jpentlandiptable, yeah I don't expect it to return everything, I just normally run it first time round because its faster. If it doesn't return anything I know I can always try find later08:53
auscompgeekiptable: that find command wouldn't have found the library either08:53
eeeeauscompgeek: it does08:53
auscompgeekeeee: I believe ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 doesn't match ld-linux.so*08:55
jpentlandI wonder why Ubuntu/Debian are still referring to x86_64 as amd6408:55
eeeeauscompgeek: ah, my mistake, i thought it was ld-linux*08:56
iptableauscompgeek, good point :D ld-linux*08:56
auscompgeekiptable: in which case `locate ld-linux` would probably have found it as well :P08:56
iptableauscompgeek, although my "find" was : type in /lib, press tab-tab, type in x86_, press tab, type in ld-li, press tab tab :D08:56
jpentlandn08:57
eeeeauscompgeek: it wouldn't08:57
eeeeauscompgeek: locate -r ld-linux* , would though08:57

landauhi, in my fstab I have this line:08:59
landauUUID=E0F2098BF20966DE   /media/ACER ntfs-3g     defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=027,fmask=137,locale=en_US.UTF-8 0     008:59
landauhow to allow exec permissions for files?09:00
huihow can I set combination key to switch between specified programs to make work easier? Is there a software to achieve this?09:00
eeeehui: alt+tab09:00
OerHekslandau, ntfs is not posix, so there is no way to set a file as executable09:00
landauohhh... :(  I need files execution09:01
huiI open many program,,but I only want two of them for example ,others work background..09:01
eeeelandau: http://www.tuxera.com/community/ntfs-3g-faq/09:01
eeeei think you need to add exec to the end of the line09:01
iptablelandau, there *is* a way09:02
landauiptable, really??09:03
iptablelandau, on ntfs, if a file is .com or .exe, the file with automatically be marked as executable due to extension.09:03
iptableit's a workaround09:03
landauok i'll try it09:03
iptableI wonder if one can give ntfs mount option to get all files to be executable. what's dmask/fmask?09:03
eeeelandau: add exec to the end of the line ( it has to be the last option on the line )09:03
eeeeUUID=E0F2098BF20966DE   /media/ACER ntfs-3g     defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=027,fmask=137,locale=en_US.UTF-8,exec 0     009:04
landauiptable, .exe non works :(09:04
iptablelandau, or change the fmask. fmask is file mask for what permissions should files have by default. change to 027 from 137 and you all files will be marked as executable09:04
landaueeee, i'll try that...thanks!09:04
iptableI'm not sure ntfs driver supports exec. We will know soon :D09:05
onlahey. how do I change the window manager in lubuntu? In ubuntu I read it is storing info at /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/"YOURSESSION" but I don't have that in lubuntu09:05
landauiptable, yes, 027 might be a solution, but i don't like to have all files executable09:06
iptablelandau, you do not have a choice. either all executable or none09:06
eeeelandau: try adding the exec, it might work09:06
Ben64landau: how are you planning on executing exe files anyway?09:06
rom1504YoLtA is starting unsolicited query, talking about intelligent design, anybody up to ban him ?09:06
iptablelandau, ntfs does NOT support posix permissions, so you cannot choose which file you want to be executable09:06
Ben64rom1504: i'm not seeing anything09:06
rom1504fine hopefully he's just doing that with me09:07
eeeelandau: add exec , give it a shot brotha09:07
iptablerom1504, not on the channel he is now09:07
iptablenot09:07
landauBen64, I usually use ./file.exe09:07
Ben64landau: ok, but exe files are for windows, not linux09:07
rom1504iptable: ? #ubuntu is the only channel he is in09:07
iptablelandau, for windows files you mean wine ./file.exe ?09:07
OerHeks!pm | YoLtA09:07
ubottuYoLtA: Please ask your questions in the channel so that other people can help you, benefit from your questions and answers, and ensure that you're not getting bad advice.09:07
iptablerom1504, and not talking on it. not a single line I can see.09:08
eeeelandau: add exec, it's on my responsibility09:08
eeeeflyyyyyy09:08
iptableeeee, exec seems to make .exe files executable09:08
iptablelandau, ^09:08
iptableon ntfs that is09:08
iptableso you could try that09:08
iptablelandau, you do realise you cannot run windows exec files under linux and that you need wine or an emulator?09:09
landaueeee, I'm editing fstab09:09
landauiptable, yes I know i can't exec windows files... :)09:10
iptableok09:10
eeeelandau: it has to be at the end09:10
rom1504iptable: yes ofc he's just taking names here09:10
landauok, how to remount partition without reboot?09:11
iptablerom1504, ignore list? tell him to talk to me as I am interested. I run a ##troll for demented people with psych issues too :D09:11
iptablerom1504, go for it. troll the troll09:11
Carogalandau, mount -a09:11
iptablelandau, or mount -o remount,exec /path/where/it's/mounted09:12
iptablelandau, that will temporarily add exec just on this occation to test. no need to change fstab09:12
eeeelandau: sudo mount -o remount,defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=027,fmask=137,locale=en_US.UTF-8,exec /media/ACER09:12
iptableeeee, won't -o remount, exec just add exec and take the rest from fstab?09:13
iptableI need to test that09:13
landau   ok I'm triyng09:13
iptableeeee, it does indeed ;) mount -o remount, exec takes all options from fstab and adds exec to the end09:13
iptableeeee, mount -o exec, remount adds exec to the beginning it seems. quite cute09:13
rom1504iptable: :D09:14
eeeeok, cool09:14
iptablerom1504, patience. annoy them so much with pointless responses that they will want you to stop :D I'm cruel like that. It appears I was born a troll but never utilised the power :D09:15
landauI reboot...stay toned09:15
eeeeiptable: i'm toned, are you toned?09:16
iptableyup, toned 100%09:16
iptableit's the sun that keeps me toned ;)09:16
eeeehehe09:16
landaueeee, not works :(09:19
landauthis is my line: UUID=E0F2098BF20966DE /media/ACER ntfs-3g defaults,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=027,fmask=137,locale=en_US.UTF-8,exec 0 009:19
iptablelandau, change fmask ro 027 or remove it at all! fmask locks permissions, so exec and nothing else will work09:20
iptablelandau, with fmask removed, exec *might* work. with fmask set to 027 all files will be set with executable flag. your call what you want to test and use09:20
landauok thanks!09:21

CarogaGot a question about using ACL.09:23
CarogaI have a group container three (application) users which I want to give full access to /cloud/media.09:24
CarogaCan I put the ACL persistency to group:group instead of owner:group ?09:24
Carogaon that folder that is.09:24
Carogacontaining*09:25
Carogaanyone ?09:35
iptableCaroga, permissions are user:group09:38
kk_dropmy menu_item_delete($mlid) not working when $mlid is view path. I must use normal query to remove link from database09:38
Carogaiptable, then giving that group full access is already enough ?09:38
iptableCaroga, I got no idea what you mean by group:group. it's user:group. you can use ACLs to give permission to more groups to a directory/file.09:38
iptableCaroga, yes. if a user belongs to that group and you give full access to that group, the user can change files in that dir.09:38
Carogaiptable, no matter who the owner is, if the group is there and with full access, then it's no problem ?09:39
* iptable goes to figure out how to inflate his bicycle tyres on the weird connect they got. wtf is presta?09:39
vitimitiHi09:40
iptableCaroga, no. If the permission flags say group has rwx for group X, then no matter who is the user09:40
iptableCaroga, you need group ownership and access (chmod-type acl too).09:40
Carogaiptable, okey, because user1 will create a folder inside that mount, which will have user1:group. Since user2 is member of group, it will have no problems doing whatever he needs to do with that folder then.09:41
iptableCaroga, outside acl you would do: chmod 770 /test; chown -R user:group /test <= that would make the dir and all files belong to user:group and give full rwx permissions to the user and anyone who is member of said group09:41
CarogaOfcourse I will setup ACL on that mount as well.09:41
iptableCaroga, as long as user1 gives rwx permission to the group09:41
iptableCaroga, default permissions, unless defualts are changed, are 755 (rwx for user, rx for group and all)09:41
Carogaiptable, that's the point, I dont want user1 to be setting all these rights everytime, I need it to be persistent, that's why I thought I needed ACL for.09:42
iptableCaroga, find ouot how to change defualt permissions on a directory. That's as far as I can go with this.09:42
iptableCaroga, no, you need default permissions for new dirs/files to be adjusted09:42
iptableCaroga, https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/1314/how-to-set-default-file-permissions-for-all-folders-files-in-a-directory09:43
* iptable really goes now09:43
Carogaiptable, thanks for the tip, I will search on how to do so09:43
Carogaiptable, thanks for the url and your time.09:43
iptableCaroga, and this one: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-desktop-74/applying-default-permissions-for-newly-created-files-within-a-specific-folder-605129/09:43
Carogaiptable, that's applying ACL :D09:44

CoolCoderI have installed New version of Ubuntu 14.04, once logged in, i found there are some updates available. I clicked to update. after few mins, when I try to login, I gets message Incorrect login! Nice work!09:44
iptableCaroga, that's applying default group/user permission on newly created files/dirs using acls. that will work for you. happy reading :)09:44

AliveI am running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and have run into a kernel panic. I cant boot my system now. I have two choices, find the problem and fix it or re-install. cfhowlettAlive, or reboot into advanced options and choose older kernel10:08
CoolCodercfhowlett,  (this ain't windows!), windows never shows such errors. Sad to say, for a normal user, its a bad experience. after update he cant login to the system or cant do anythnig! I can understand this is opensource etc.10:09

Aliveguest-44 I can save my work, but this system has loads and loads of configs and installs on it. Not all is lost, but I am trying to find the reason for the kernel panic so I can rather perhaps just fix that.10:12

TheBigDealiptable, Great question11:10
gms_hi all. I'd like to write a script that logs the installed packages on regular basis. I know the command that does it however how can I automate this process?11:10
Fuchsgms_: you could make a cron job11:10
searchingiptable why don`t work cgi script11:10
Fuchsgms_: that executes the command and >> the output to a log file  (then I'd add that to logrotate, sounds like it might become big)11:10
iptablesearching, because it be bad configured or file not have executable permissions11:11
TheBigDealgms_, python import the os module11:11

TheBigDealgms_, :( sorry nobody going to answer you in a programming task, if you are really interested check out ##programming11:12

searchingi follow your link but config don`t work11:12
gms_TheBigDeal: No no, I've been just looking for some hints. surely I'll handle the programming part11:12
iptablesearching, and as stated, your cgi scripts need to be executable (+x)11:12
searchingyes chmod +x script.py11:13
searchingnot working11:13
gms_thanks for your helps. I'll take a look at cron jobs11:13
TheBigDealgms_, I gave you a hint, but in python :)11:13
iptablesearching, "don't work" does not help me. I also need logs, your config all in pastebin. oh and an answer to "what is the purpose of this excercise" would be appreciated.11:13
gms_:) I wish I knew python. Thank you anyway11:13
TheBigDealgms_, What language are you working on?11:13
gms_TheBigDeal: well, I'm not a programmer but I know C and C++11:14
TheBigDealgms_, Well, you want to write a bash script then?11:14
iptablewith C/C++ knowledge, learning all other languages is rather simple. unless you don't do OOP, in which case, prepare to have your brain turned inside out.11:15
iptablegms_, ^11:15
iptablein python, even a string is an object :/11:15
somsipgms_: /var/log/apt/history has everything in there, so perhaps easier to parse this. dpkg --get-selections dumps installed packages.11:15
TheBigDealiptable, OOP ;)11:15
searchingiptable I found something like RewriteEngine On11:15
gms_TheBigDeal: I guess yes. Once upon a time , I had written an alarm script which used to warn me after passing 1 hr in front of computer11:15

TheBigDealgms_, What's the problem with the code you have written already, what it cannot do?11:22

somsipiptable: and he's on his own with that as far as I'm concerned. But I'll tell him where config files live :)11:22
gms_TheBigDeal: It works fine but I want to automate this process. Say, every monday the os logs the installed packages .11:22
TheBigDealaha11:23
somsipgms_: cronjob. bash command of your choice. Example already given (that needs some work)11:23

iptablegms_, 1. on fresh install run apt-mark showmanual. save to file1. 2. regularly run apt-mark showmanual and save to file2. a diff of file1 and file2 will show you which packages you manually installed after the original system deployment.11:23

burkmatSo it seems that when attempting to install to a hybrid laptop, the installer first wonders which disk to install the OS to, then just tries to install GRUB to whatever disk was first in the list. When that failed, I was prompted to select a new location for GRUB, but doing so failed the install anyway. Setting up my own partition table and selecting the right GRUB-disk from the get-go seems to have resolved it.17:45
DylanLooking it up now. You mentioned that's a very different version than you first expected. Which version were you expecting?17:45
guest-lkajdf_431usr13: ok, I didn't see a mention of whether umask is global (when you change the setting it goes from /root down recursively) or more local (you have options and can set multiple umask values for specific dirs under /root). PermaNulldaftykins, IIRC the issue at hand is ubuntu isn't seeing the disc mounted even though I'm booting off it.20:43
KillswitchHello guys, I am having an issue upgrading Ubuntu Server 14.04 LTS ImageMagick from 6.7.7 to 6.8.9 from source. I do everything like ImageMagick's site says, but get "Illegal Instruction"20:43
KillswitchI searched for the last few days and I cannot for the life of me figure out how to fix this20:43
daftykinsPermaNull: did you run the disc check yet? i'm not really up for more responses until that's tested20:43
ObrienDaveKillswitch, use the repo version20:43
PermaNulldaftykins, give me a moment the thing is being picky.20:44
daftykinsKillswitch: if you're lucky you might find someone willing to assist, but we typically don't support non packages20:44
KillswitchObrienDave: the repo version is too old. We need the new version.20:44
ObrienDaveKillswitch, glwt20:44
KillswitchSo no possible help at all, like maybe figuring out what the heck "illegal instruction" even means and how to work around it?20:45
PermaNullKillswitch, Where are you encountering "Illegal instruction"20:45
ObrienDaveillegal instruction is just what it sounds like. something compiled wrong20:45
PermaNullWhat are you executing/doing when that happens?20:46
KillswitchPermaNull: after going through the steps and running convert -version20:46
PermaNullSounds like you missed something at compile time.20:47

PermaNullKillswitch, I'd have to agree with daftykins and say you need to contact imagemagick directly.20:50
PermaNullIt appears to be an ongoing bug in their software.20:50
PermaNullhttp://www.imagemagick.org/discourse-server/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2435320:50
PermaNullProbably no the same version but it's reported again and again per version it seems.20:51

daftykinsKillswitch: tried finding a PPA with newer builds?20:51
daftykinsthat's your other, still unsupported option20:52
OerHeksKillswitch, try this way configure ,make, make install http://www.sysads.co.uk/2014/06/install-imagemagick-ubuntu-14-04/20:52
ObrienDaveKillswitch, where did you find "convert -version"?20:52
KillswitchWhat confuses me though, is I'm trying to do this in a vagrant virtual machine, and couldn't get it working, co-worker did it on his machine which is the exact same as mine, (same vagrant files) and it worked for him, so we tried to do it on our staging server the exact way he did it, no go.20:52

Quatrokingkinda missing the fancy microsoft minesweeper with its daily challenges and stuff20:53

ObrienDaveKillswitch, where did you find the instructions for adding "convert -version"?20:54
KillswitchSame outcome20:54
KillswitchObrienDave: it's a standard command for ImageMagick.20:54

daftykinsQuatroking: seriously doubt it.20:55
PermaNull^ ObrienDave, "convert" is an imagemagick binary and -version is well, self explanatory.20:55
ObrienDaveok fine20:55
PermaNullKillswitch, my recommendation see if you can get the arguments that were used to compile the version you have working 6.7.7 and compile the new version with same args.20:56
KillswitchPermaNull: that's what comes from apt-get in stock Ubuntu 14.0420:57
PermaNullIf that doesn't work submit a bug report on their forums.20:57
KillswitchPermaNull: how do I get those args?20:58
PermaNullKillswitch, not 100% sure it spits that out I was basing that on previous experience with other things.21:01

SpartanWarriorHello there, I want to update a saucy server but apt-get update gives me 403 errors when fetching sources and packages, what should I do? :(22:34
reisioAjkthx: all that are are22:35
daftykinsSpartanWarrior: share the output of "sudo apt-get update" to start with22:35
SpartanWarriork22:35
daftykinsSpartanWarrior: via a paste site such as paste.ubuntu.com of course22:35
SpartanWarriorthis is my output: http://paste.ubuntu.com/8482075/22:36
daftykinsSpartanWarrior: yeah so by update you really mean upgrade to trusty, yes?22:37
Ajkthxso i want to transition from windows to ubuntu. what would your guys' words of wisdom be for this22:37
SpartanWarriorindeed, i know saucy is quite outdated22:37
daftykinsSpartanWarrior: the repos have been renamed now since saucy is EOL, just run "do-release-upgrade" and you should be good to go, but have backups of coure22:37
daftykins*course22:37
SpartanWarriorI tried that but: http://paste.ubuntu.com/8482085/22:38
SpartanWarrior(yes i'm connected to the internet)22:39
daftykinsSpartanWarrior: headless server yeah?22:40
stan_man_canHi all, I was SSH'ed into my VPS and running a aptitude safe-upgrade, it was part way through and requesting user input when my internet connection dropped. Now that I'm SSH'ed back into the server, how do I resume where I left off? I can't do aptitude safe-upgrade again as I'm getting errors  https://gist.github.com/anonymous/e7da5dd9fa28ef2f75de22:40
daftykinsaptitude isn't standard on ubuntu, apt-get is :)22:40
SpartanWarriordaftykins: yup, i'm sshing22:40
daftykinsSpartanWarrior: you can try this, though i wouldn't normally consider is the best approach - "do-release-upgrade -d"22:41
daftykins!dpkglock | stan_man_can22:41
ubottustan_man_can: If an APT front-end crashed and your database is locked, try this in a !terminal: « sudo fuser -vki /var/lib/dpkg/lock;sudo dpkg --configure -a »22:41
gingis there an apt-get command which will make it automatically downgrade packages to meet dependancies ?22:41
daftykinsdowngrade is not supported22:42
gingbut i want it to!22:42
SpartanWarriordaftykins, the same output :(22:42
SpartanWarrior'm about to cry22:42
daftykinsSpartanWarrior: with sudo too?22:43
SpartanWarrior both cases: user and sudo22:43
daftykinsblargh.22:43
daftykinsSpartanWarrior: you could be bold and backup your sources.list, then manually replace saucy with trusty and update.22:44
daftykinsSpartanWarrior: just a warning - you don't use any PPAs do you?22:44
SpartanWarriornot a single one, it's a file/webserver22:44
daftykinsah-har22:45
stan_man_candaftykins: Partially worked, now I'm seeing this debconf: DbDriver "config": /var/cache/debconf/config.dat is locked by another process: Resource temporarily unavailable22:45
CodeVentwell I guess no one can help.22:46
daftykinsCodeVent: try #ubuntu-server22:46

Loshkistan_man_can: I would say reboot, but half way through an upgrade means it may not reboot properly or at all. At this point, I would say bite the bullet, make any backups you need, and do a from-scratch install.22:51

cleptoi had samba set up and running previously and my router died. so i replaced it and now my ubuntu machine is not showing up in network discovery. i can connect to it via SSH using the same ip address it had before internally as that didnt change but its not showing up in networked computers list from my windows boxes. anyone able to help me figure out this issue?22:56
Davy_CrockettHello peeps Oi!22:57
Loshkiclepto: is smbd running? Try sudo /etc/init.d/smbd restart22:57
cleptoloshki: service smbd status22:58
clepto smbd start/running, process 352922:58
Loshkiclepto: restart it...22:58
cleptoloshki: ive restarted it, reinstalled it, and reconfigured and restarted it about 5 times now. ive gone through 3 different howto guides and its still not working. my best guess is somehow network discovery got messed up on the ubuntu network config because of the new router/network22:59
Loshkiclepto: I've always found smbd to be a bit unreliable. And at least once I recall having to download the latest source and compile/run it because the regular one was buggy. The only thing that changed was the router?23:01
tripelbI eant t erase my entire ubuntu partition and remove the grub so it just boots to win 8 again. How do I do this? Thanks.23:02
tripelbI want to erase "23:02
cleptoloshki: yep, machine has the same internal ip address it had before. i replaced one DD-WRT router with another one.23:02
cleptoloshki: whats interesting is i can see my other Ubuntu machine when i do smbtree but it isnt showing my windows boxes....23:04
Loshkiclepto: same router config? access lists preventing smb packets? Got a laptop handy? Use it to sniff the network & see...23:05
cleptoloshki: i can access my samba shares between my two linux boxes just fine. the communicate with each other but not windows... its friggen odd23:06
cleptoloshki: and my windows boxes see each other as well but dont see the linux boxes23:07

kenny__There is 'languagelist' but I think that is for 'locale' only.23:41
=== Ubuntu is now known as Guest99741
rypervenchekenny__: Well, there are the keymaps that are in /usr/share/keymaps, there are also IMEs out there that you can use to provide other languages' input.23:48
