daftykinsdiddledan: did you get a wrist slap? ^_^16:23
Myrttidid you already discuss it with popey?16:24
diddledandaftykins: I'm not sure, but I feel violated :-p there were questions but nobody has said "NO! FOR THE LOVE OF MARK, NO!" yet16:24
Myrttifreenode guidelines say, I think, that you shouldn't run a bot on a channel without discussing and getting an explicit go-ahead from the ops.16:25
Myrttiso, I guess the question is, have you?16:25
diddledanoops16:26
diddledandaftykins: you're a bad influence :-p16:26

safiyyahhi everyone, I cannot seem to burn an ISO in my system. I am running 14.04 (which was an upgrade from the normal sys upgrades. I wanted to load it into a disk and do a clean install because at the moment I do not have a seperate home partition.17:19
safiyyahAll the DVD disk I burn, 8 in total, still come up as a blank disk AFTER the disk burner tells me it was a success, last week we thought my DVD burner was faulty so this one is brand new, got it out of the pack today!17:20
safiyyahAlso the bootable USB, doesn't seem to get picked up. I am on a BIOS system.17:20
safiyyahApart from sorting out my partitions, at this point am fed up so if I can sort out my partitions without needing a clean install then, am fine with that too17:21
daftykinshow did you make the USB up?17:21
daftykinsalso welcome back17:21
safiyyahdaftykins, using the startup disk thingi17:21
DJonesHeh https://twitter.com/BBCEngland/status/519145207288590336/photo/117:21
daftykinsdid you md5 your downloaded ISO to be sure it's ok?17:21
safiyyahdaftykins, thank you,17:21
safiyyahif that means that command where you get a number to compare then yes did that already17:22
daftykinsok so what i would do is totally format the flash drive, then try putting the ISO onto it with "dd" instead17:22
safiyyahdd?17:23
daftykinse.g. lets say the flash drive is /dev/sdc, "sudo dd if=/path/to/file.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=4K"17:23
safiyyahokay will put the flash drive... we have to find it first17:23
safiyyahlspci?17:23
daftykins"sudo fdisk -l"17:24
daftykinsto identify it, size would be the most obvious metric17:24
safiyyahhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/8508795/17:25
safiyyahI think its the  sdc117:25
safiyyahit's a 4gb flash drive17:26
daftykinsyep, but you will use dd to write straight to the device17:27
daftykinsso don't use sdc1, but 'sdc'17:27
daftykinspretty jammy guess on my example \o/17:27
daftykinssafiyyah: is sdb your old HDD and sda your new one?17:28
safiyyahsudo dd if=/home/safiyyah/Downloads/ubuntu-14.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdc bs=4K17:29
safiyyahdaftykins please check if I wrote the commance properly?17:30
safiyyahi dont know why there is an sdb and an sda17:30
MartijnVdSsafiyyah: command looks fine, IF you've checked if /dev/sdc is the correct one17:30
safiyyahI thought there was only an sda17:30
MartijnVdSsafiyyah: you don't want to overwrite your hard disk accidentally17:30
daftykinssafiyyah: yep that's perfect17:30
safiyyahand you are sure it's sdc?17:31
daftykins100%17:31
safiyyahokay one last questions do I put i386 architecture or 64amd17:31
safiyyahI have both files17:31
safiyyahAre you guys all on the 64 now?17:32
daftykinswhat's your processor type and model?17:32
safiyyahI don't want to be the only one with it17:32
daftykinsand system RAM17:32
MartijnVdSUse 64 unless the processor of the destination system doesn't support it17:32
safiyyahI have 2 mb of ram17:32
MartijnVdS2 GB I hope :)17:32
daftykins"cat /proc/cpuinfo" and read the model #?17:32
safiyyahprocessor I think is it pentium 2?17:32
daftykinshaha no it'll be a fair bit newer than a P217:32
MartijnVdSPentiul 2 is from 1999 or something17:33
safiyyahlol17:33
MartijnVdSIt could be a Core 2 Duo?17:33
safiyyahcant remember its about 6 years old17:33
safiyyahyes its tyhe core 2 duo17:33
MartijnVdSsounds like C2D :)17:33
safiyyahyes and 2 gb of ram17:33
daftykinsgo amd64 then17:33
daftykinsso run it as you shared :)17:34
safiyyah2 cards of 1gb ram on the motherboard17:34
safiyyahand the motherboard is ASUS17:34
daftykinsyou won't see any output or progress, so just let it complete and return to the BASH prompt17:34
safiyyahjust last time I had an amd 64 system it drove me mad, needing everything configured17:34
safiyyahI had to become best friend with the terminal17:34
MartijnVdSit's no longer like that17:35
safiyyaham not keen on the fight17:35
safiyyahokay cool17:35
daftykinssafiyyah: the thing is, as you have two hard disks it looks like you've got two OS installs there... i'd just pick whichever one you want the OS to stay on, then turn the other disk into your /home partition. that would be easy17:35
safiyyahdaftykins, that is what am trying to do17:35
daftykinsyou don't need to clean install then really17:35
safiyyahI want the big one as the home partion17:35
daftykinsoh the big, ok17:35
safiyyahwell the OS never seems t need more than 15gb17:36
daftykinsindeed17:36
safiyyahI tend to have lots on my home file17:36
safiyyahdownloads, pictures the works17:36
daftykinsyep it's totally logical17:36
safiyyahI figured that's where I needed more space17:36
daftykinswhat OS installs are on each disk though 0o17:36
daftykinsi.e. ubuntu versions?17:37
safiyyahlol The big one has 14.04 (upgraded from the software centre17:37
safiyyahand the other one is 12.0417:37

daftykinsmight as well nuke the lot and start again then yes :)17:37
daftykinshowever both disks are in the wrong order right now of course17:37

daftykinsoh well lets concentrate on getting bootable media first17:39
safiyyahokay daftykins I put the command in17:39
safiyyahthe terminal is at it at the moment17:40
daftykinsgood stuff17:40
daftykinsshouldn't be more than a few minutes17:40
safiyyahwhen it finishes then I take it I will get the usual prompt again17:40
daftykinshave you previously identified how to get your system to display a boot menu, for device selection, at power on?17:40
safiyyahyes17:40
daftykinsit's F8 on Asus boards i think17:41
daftykinsas i have one of that era myself17:41
safiyyahthere is no option for USB boot, it just says other17:42
safiyyahI haven't tried f817:42
safiyyahdaftykins, I think you were the one who told me to buy the board?17:42
daftykinsok, be sure to use the USB ports directly from the motherboard too17:42
safiyyahah I have been using the ones attached to the case17:42
safiyyahokay will do17:42
daftykinserr i remember speaking to you in the past, but i don't recall that specifically17:43
daftykinswas it when the machine was dead at some point and you were picking a new motherboard to replace it?17:43
safiyyahyes17:43
daftykinsyeah no doubt i favoured Asus then :D17:43
safiyyahI tend to replace bits as I need them17:43
safiyyahlike this time I replaced the CD drive17:44
safiyyahand got a new SSD17:44
safiyyahyeah that time you told me the motherboard and the SSD17:44
safiyyahcould only afford 60gb17:44
daftykinsso when you do your install, you should only proceed when the installer sees the 60GB drive as sda and the 250GB as sdb... if they're the other way around it'll be far from ideal17:44
safiyyahbut they got cheaper so I bought a bigger one17:45
daftykinsyou might end up needing to swap the SATA data cables that connect them both, to swap that order17:45
safiyyahhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/8508927/17:45
safiyyahI think that's the desired output17:45
daftykinslooks good, do you follow me on the disk order topic?17:45
safiyyahI think I connected the larger one to SATA117:45
safiyyahyes17:45
safiyyahisn't installer going to ask me about partitions as usual?17:46
daftykinsyeah so i'd go test whether you can boot the flash drive, hitting F8 when you see either an Asus logo or just the BIOS POST screen which may say how much RAM you have...17:46
daftykinsthen if it does boot, i'd swap the disks before installing17:46
safiyyahokay17:46
daftykinsit will, but GRUB will end up being installed to the larger disk with /home on17:46
daftykinswhich'd be kinda messy imo17:46
safiyyahoh noooooo17:47
daftykinsanywho see if it boots and come back here i think :)17:47
safiyyahwill do so17:47
daftykinsunless you have another device to join IRC from17:47

daftykinsif you're partitioning now, i would remove everything from both disks18:13
daftykinsgreat stuff :)18:13

daftykinsnah she doesn't need that18:15
SafiyyahIs sdb a logical or primary partition?18:15
daftykinsit'll be primary18:16
daftykinsonly the swap on sda should be logical, though it doesn't matter either way18:17
daftykinsall three can be primary18:17
daftykins /, swap and /home18:17
SafiyyahDone18:19
SafiyyahFinally18:19
SafiyyahIt's copying the files18:19
daftykins\o/18:19
daftykinsshould be nice and rapid USB -> SSD18:19
SafiyyahThe stuff with the partitions would have driven me crazy to work out why I  can't get it to sda lol18:20
daftykins:)18:20
daftykinsoften i pull every other drive in a system to make sure the only drive with boot components on it, is the one with the OS installed18:20
SafiyyahDaftykins we still have the nvidia drivers to do....  5 more minutes on the install it says,  font leave me!18:25
daftykinshaha, do you do anything like games that benefit from them? i'd try and get by with nouveau if it works fine for you18:26
awilkinsLooks like all their servers are a bit fucked18:27
awilkinsSupport server is kaput18:28
daftykinsnot very necessary language sir18:28
SafiyyahDaftykins am hooked on compiz18:29
SafiyyahCan't live without it18:29
SafiyyahIt's the thing that makes me brag to all the windows am Mac users18:29
SafiyyahLove how they just know their isn't as good lol18:29
daftykinsalso - who? :)18:29
daftykinsSafiyyah: heh fair enough, but 3D works fine with nouveau too18:29
Safiyyah237http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B0037SHEAQ?qid=1412620239&sr=8-1&vs=118:31
Safiyyah237I recommend this tray18:31
Safiyyah237Best thing since sliced bread18:32
Safiyyah237Holds two SSD drove,  no screws very tidy18:32
Safiyyah237Daftykins18:32
daftykinsah-har18:34
daftykinswee bit pricey :)18:34
safiyyahdaftykins, okay am in the new system!18:37
safiyyahnow need to solve nvidia18:37
daftykinsjust fire up the additonal drivers area to select an alternative driver18:38
daftykinsbut as i say i'm pretty sure it'll be doing all the 3D fancy stuff right now18:38
safiyyahyes am installing18:38
safiyyahthis is the bit we end up calling popey on18:39
safiyyahduring my last install, I made some notes which states that the best driver for my Nvidia 8400 is 17318:39
daftykinsXD18:39
safiyyahwhich am putting18:39
daftykinsyeah that makes sense, quite an old card that18:40
safiyyahalso popey made me a custome made xorg.conf18:40
MartijnVdSshouldn't be necessary anymore18:40
daftykinsoh yeah wasn't there some screen resolution difficulty in the past?18:40
daftykinsMartijnVdS: i think there was a case involving an exotic display :>18:40
daftykinssafiyyah: part of me expects the woes of the past to be due to that old driver, i definitely wouldn't try the xorg.conf until it's deemed absolutely necessary though18:41
safiyyahokay well it has installed it18:41
safiyyahlet's see if the graphics go mad18:41
daftykinstime to reboot and see what you get18:41
safiyyahokay, rebooting18:42
Safiyyah237Yep the crazy graphics are here!18:43
safiyyahokay18:43
daftykinssoo, not quite filling the screen or something?18:43
safiyyahso now is it lol18:43
safiyyahfills the screen the resolution is very very poor18:44
daftykinsremind me, does this screen connect over VGA?18:44
safiyyahright so back to the notes from last time?18:44
safiyyahyes VGA18:44
daftykinsnah i wouldn't revert just yet18:44
safiyyahbut I have a 21 inch screen18:44
safiyyahits a TV18:45
daftykins*nod*18:45
safiyyahthats how popey ended up making me a  file18:45
daftykinsif you could install pastebinit then run "pastebinit /var/log/Xorg.0.log" we can see what it's up to18:45
safiyyahokay so lets see the nothers18:45
safiyyahoh damn! my machine name!18:46
safiyyahwe need to fix that18:46
safiyyahlol18:46
daftykinshehe18:46
daftykinssomeone wasn't paying enough attention during the installer ;)18:46
safiyyahsafiyyah@safiyyah-System-Product-Name:~$18:46
safiyyahforgot to delete the system bit18:47
safiyyahdamn!18:47
daftykinsheh that's an odd one18:47
daftykinseasily remedied though18:47
safiyyahright back to nvidia issues18:47
safiyyahso it's sudo aptget pastebinit ?18:47
daftykinssudo apt-get install pastebinit18:47
daftykinsi'm assuming the system is fully up to date as is though18:47
daftykinsmay want to run a "sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" to be sure first18:48
safiyyahhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/8509327/18:48
daftykinsglancing now18:49
daftykinsdoes anyone have any better methods than a manual edit of /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname to change the host's name? :)18:49
safiyyahokay so it is still using nouvou18:50
daftykinsnope18:50
daftykinsit's using nvidia18:50
safiyyahmy notes say it needs to have something like loadmodule:'nvidia'18:50
daftykinssafiyyah: looks like your system's not updated yet, i spy a -32 instead of -36 kernel.18:50
safiyyahokay so need to update everything?18:51
daftykins"sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade"18:51
safiyyahokay18:51
safiyyahon it18:51
daftykinsso yeah it's failing to read the EDID over the VGA cable again, so that's the old issue from the past18:52
safiyyahneeds 9 minutes to complete18:53
safiyyahso do we need popey's xorg.conf file?18:53
daftykinswell i would personally prefer to try at least the 304 driver before giving up18:53
safiyyahwill put a new graphics card on the shopping list of my next upgrade in two years lol18:54
daftykinsi think the issue is more that you don't have a nice digitally connected monitor18:54
daftykinssomething with DVI, HDMI or displayport wouldn't have this issue18:54
safiyyahmy notes say all drivers failed except the 17318:54
safiyyahI havea HDMI monitor18:55
daftykinswhat was failure? no picture at all?18:55
daftykinsah ok, just no HDMI out on the graphics card?18:55
safiyyahillegibile huge pixels18:55
safiyyahyes daftykins , its the graphics card that is old18:55
daftykinsit should have DVI though i'd be willing to bet18:55
daftykinsthe wide white connector18:55
safiyyahwhen we do the next upgrade in two years I will buy a graphics card18:56
safiyyahgone over budget with the new SSD18:56
safiyyahand tray and DVD drive lol18:56
daftykinswell, you could just have a cable that converts DVI -> HDMI, then all this would go away :>18:56
safiyyahNO MORE!18:56
safiyyahpopey's magic file will make it go away18:56
safiyyahI hope!18:56
safiyyahI only do new installs when either a part of the machine dies OR the new LTS is out18:57
safiyyahso hopefully the next one is in two years18:57
safiyyahlol18:57
* zmoylan-pi sees your dvi -> hdmi adapter and wonders where i put the frankencable that was vga -> dvi -> hdmi that i made for my rasp pi :-)18:57
daftykins:D18:58
zmoylan-piit didn't work as the hdmi port is too low power so i ended up connecting the pi via scart instead which was another adventure :-)18:58
daftykinssafiyyah: ok, i'd let the dist-upgrade complete, reboot, place the xorg.conf, reboot again and if the display is all perfect it'll be hostname edit time18:58
safiyyahokay18:58
daftykinsSCART D: oh my word.18:58
safiyyahstill 3 minutes on the upgrade left18:59
zmoylan-pibut daftykins it worked :-)18:59
safiyyahdaftykins, did you check out the tray on Amazon?18:59
daftykinsoh certainly, you wouldn't catch me using such an interconnect these days though ;)18:59
daftykinssafiyyah: yep, tad pricey i thought18:59
safiyyahbought it for 6 quid 2 weeks ago18:59
safiyyahsomeone woke up and double the price19:00
safiyyahbut it is really really good19:00
safiyyahit's my favourite bit now19:00
zmoylan-piwell daftykins in my early days i used an interfaker to print out on cpm computers and input the info into serial on ancient pcs.19:00
zmoylan-piparallel -> serial was... special19:01
daftykins:D19:01
daftykinswhat baud rate?19:01
safiyyahwas it gksudo nautilus to get a nautilus that had super user priviledges so I can drag and drop the file?19:01
daftykinssafiyyah: it definitely serves the purpose! i mostly just tape SSDs in XD19:02
zmoylan-piusually 2400/4800 as 9600 was just too fast :-)19:02
daftykinssafiyyah: yep but gksudo isn't installed as default anymore i think19:02
safiyyahoh damn19:02
safiyyahhow do i put it in?19:02
daftykinsrun it, then it should tell you what package needs to be installed to provide it19:02
safiyyahsudo apt-get install gksu19:03
safiyyahlet the update finish then install gksu and then reboot19:03
safiyyahI don't know how they boosted the price in two weeks so much19:04
daftykinsevil amazon marketplace sellers i guess19:04
safiyyahin any case, it's really good19:04
daftykinssafiyyah: just a thought then, if that TV has HDMI in and you don't use it - and the graphics card has DVI out... http://www.amazon.co.uk/Premium-HDMI-Cable-Gold-Metre-Black/dp/B000GDI6FC/19:05
safiyyahI use HDMI19:06
safiyyahfor my Blue Ray player19:06
safiyyahDon't have a telly19:06
safiyyahdo everything via the net19:06
safiyyahand the Blue ray player19:06
safiyyahkids can watch all their bits on youtube and iplayer and several other places19:07
daftykinswhatever the screen device is though19:07
safiyyahwell the HDMI port it taken19:07
daftykinsi guess it would be a pain to swap over each time19:07
safiyyahi would have to buy a splitter cable first19:07
daftykinswell, an HDMI switcher really yeah19:08
daftykinsoh well19:08
daftykinsi just can't stand analogue display connections anymore19:08
daftykinsyou get issues like... yours :)19:08
safiyyahno we will upgrade to a new graphics card19:08
safiyyahlol19:08
safiyyahit might have a couple of options19:08
daftykinsyeah but you'd still have to use VGA, so you'd still have the same problem19:08
safiyyahisnt there an HDMI splitter cable?19:09
daftykinsit doesn't work like that19:09
safiyyahah!19:09
safiyyahwhat about USB?19:09
daftykinsdoesn't carry video, yet19:09
safiyyahit has a USB port19:09
safiyyahhmmmm19:09
safiyyahwe'll cross that bridge when we get to it19:09
daftykinsnah that'd never work as a signal input as-is19:09
daftykins*nod*19:09
safiyyaham thinking I will need a new card purely because this one is soooo old19:10
safiyyahits a dinosaur19:10
safiyyahokay reboot time, am still on andcha19:10
safiyyahwhere is the xorg.conf?19:14
safiyyahI thought it was in /var19:14
safiyyahi mean /var/log19:15
daftykins/etc/X11/19:15
daftykinsthere won't be one right now, so you'll just be placing it19:15
safiyyahdaftykins, also I might decide I was a bigger 32 inch monitor by then19:15
safiyyahwant*19:15
safiyyaham sure I can get one with two HDMI ports19:15
daftykinsdefinitely19:16
daftykinsmine has like 419:16
safiyyahyes, I have had this one for about 5 years, it was the new cool technology at the time19:17
safiyyaham sure in a couple more years I will be keen on a bigger sharper one19:17
safiyyahwith more ports, so when I upgrade the graphics card it won't cause this headache19:18
daftykinsmmm, i remember paying £400+ for my 24" computer screens, now they're <£200 for something great19:18
safiyyahhopefully there will be no dead part between this LTS and the next19:18
safiyyahYeah i forked out quite a bit for this one at that time too19:19
safiyyahbut for me, it's a great entertainment centre and work space19:19
safiyyahgot the Pc surround sound speakers19:19
daftykins:)19:19
daftykinsah nice19:19
safiyyahit has HD19:19
safiyyahmy blu ray disks appear crisp19:19
safiyyahlike you can touch the image19:20
safiyyahI think it does the job19:20
safiyyahjust getting greedy wanting a bigger screen19:20
daftykins:D19:20
safiyyahbut am sure within 2 years, I will have gotten a new screen lol19:20
safiyyahI do my work out DVD's on it too19:20
daftykinsit's a slippery slope, you can never go back once you buy a larger screen19:21
safiyyahlol19:21
safiyyahit's the work outs that make me want a big one19:21
safiyyahI am short sighted, and I dont work out with glasses19:21
safiyyahits a bit annoying coming close to the screen to see what to do19:21
daftykinsah-har19:22
safiyyahInsanity is okay, cos shaun T talks you through stuff, but Tapout really needs you to look at what is going on19:22
safiyyahTapoutXT19:22
safiyyahthats what's causing me to want the 3219:22
safiyyahbut I have everything else as I want it.... sound etc19:22
safiyyahbesides it's nice shouting at the screen and no-one is around to call me crazy in my own home19:23
safiyyahlol19:23
safiyyahbrb I think it's reboot time19:23
safiyyahalthough my cat gives me wierd looks19:24
safiyyahDaftykins ITS WORKING!!!!!!!!!!!!19:26
zmoylan-picats give everyone weird looks, it's part of their job description19:26
daftykinspopey from the past saves the day :)19:26
daftykinszmoylan-pi: +119:27
safiyyahzmoylan-pi,  lol not this breed, I have a HUGE cat, breed is called maine coon19:27
safiyyahbig as a dog19:27
safiyyahweighs about 10kg19:27
zmoylan-piwell a small dog, they are fairly hefty alright19:27
daftykinsthis was mine last night - https://www.dropbox.com/s/mcltxzzutwnylgr/IMG_20141006_015659.jpg?dl=019:27
safiyyahif he is giving you wierd looks, he means it lol19:27
safiyyahlol mine cat cannot fit in my lap19:28
safiyyahmy*19:28
safiyyahtoo big19:28
safiyyahyoutube main coon cats on youtube.... but be advised19:28
safiyyahif you get one, you will never want a normal cat again19:29
safiyyahas you will decide they are too dumb19:29
safiyyahdont say I didn't warn you19:29
zmoylan-pii i shared a house with a cat that could put keys in locks and open doors19:29
daftykinsXD19:29
safiyyahdaftykins, is popey not around anymore?19:30
daftykinsyeah he's about, just got a family and job to contend with i suspect :)19:30
safiyyahzmoylan-pi, yes my cat can reach the door handles and stuff. opens the cupboard etc19:31
safiyyahcan reach the counter top to see what you are doing as well, since he is so long19:31
daftykinsO_O19:31
zmoylan-piher other speciality was opening the oven door while it was on, pulling the roasting pan to the front and hooking out sausages.  i've never known another animal to stick themselves into a fire like that19:32
safiyyahlol19:32
safiyyahmy cat will NEVER put himself at risk19:32
zmoylan-pibut they were the very best of sausages :-)19:32
safiyyahhe will steal the meat if it is out and cool19:32
safiyyahhe cant open my oven because the door is too heavy.... got an old heavy cooker19:32
daftykinssafiyyah: just the computer name change left then?19:33
zmoylan-pimy mother then decided it was time to replace the oven, she got a lot of funny looks asking in stores for an oven with a door that a cat couldn't open19:33
safiyyahwas shopping about for a new one, then when I got the price of a gas range from AGA I was ready to passout and got busy ringing technicians to fix my old cooker19:33
safiyyah£420019:34
safiyyahfor a cooker!19:34
zmoylan-piagas aren't an oven, they're a lifestyle :-)19:34
daftykinswe can't buy gas cookers online or from retailers over here, our local gas supply is LPG so everything has to be converted to use it :(19:34
daftykinskinda locks you into the local gas company to supply things19:34
safiyyahzmoylan, I kept going to currys and everywhere looking at cookers and they all felt flimsy19:34
safiyyahI have an old baumatic range cooker from 15 years ago19:35
safiyyahIt is SOLID19:35
safiyyahso  everything feels flimsy! even the new baumatics19:35
zmoylan-piyeah, i could probably club the modern ovens to pieces with some of the frying pans my father had19:35
zmoylan-pinot an aga though, you can bounce a tank off them19:35
safiyyahso I have an AGA shop nearby and popped in and they felt sturdy... and more like an upgrade to my range19:35
safiyyahLOL19:35
safiyyahwhen I heard the price..... I had to put my tail between my legs and scoot19:36
safiyyahI just wanted a sturdy gas range... AGA does them too19:36
zmoylan-pibut your kids do get to inherit your aga19:37
safiyyahrofl19:37
safiyyahyes19:37
zmoylan-pii think they are making /cheap/ agas now, or so i've been told19:37
safiyyahbut then I think that means I can wait to buy one for my 50th birthday19:37
safiyyahI am sure I will have money for a cooker that costs that much by then!19:37
zmoylan-piand you want to be buried in it.  just to annoy the pallbearers :-p19:37
safiyyahlol19:38
safiyyahI will leave it for the kids19:38
safiyyahlol19:38
safiyyahjust in my life right now, even my car didnt cost 420019:38
safiyyahlol19:38
zmoylan-pimy sister spent a silly amount of money having a bed custom made.  but she reckons it was worth it as it'll last well past her life time19:38
safiyyahhmmm19:38
safiyyahlol19:38
safiyyahI think the ONLY item in my house that I would spend money in is a cooker19:38
safiyyahlol19:38
safiyyahI love cooking and baking,19:39
safiyyahand am old school, got no toaster or anything, everything gets done on the cooker itself19:39
zmoylan-pithat's why i'd invest in the fastest microwave going :-p19:39
safiyyaheven the old kettle is a hob one19:39
safiyyahlol19:39
safiyyahmy friend came to visit and she made herself a cup of tea19:39
daftykinssafiyyah: anywho i'd rename the computer by changing all references to it at the same time in the two files: /etc/hosts and /etc/hostname :) "sudo nano /etc/hosts" for example19:39
safiyyahthen she realised that I also make my toast on the griddle19:40
safiyyahshe told me to throw my cooker out and get the old stoves with three stones and wood19:40
safiyyahlol19:40
safiyyahdaftykins19:40
safiyyahthats gedit?19:40
foobarryhas anyone looked into the usb attack ?19:41
daftykinssafiyyah: nah it's a terminal editor19:41
safiyyahoh crap19:41
daftykinsyou can use "gksudo gedit" to do it if you like, but eventually that option is going to be phased out19:41
safiyyahcan we do it through gedit?19:41
safiyyahokay time to learn19:41
safiyyahokay am ready19:41
safiyyahlets learn19:41
safiyyahtalk me through the whole thing because I avoid the terminal at all times and do things graphically19:42
safiyyahso am not the best at terminal talk19:42
safiyyahI also need to disable the guest account, I have a certain son of mine who wakes up at 5am to use the computer and play games19:42
safiyyahwhile we are all alseep19:43
foobarryaskubuntu is a good site19:43
foobarryand so is a stairgate on the kid's bedroom19:43
safiyyahlol19:44
foobarry;)19:44
safiyyahfoobarry,  he is 919:44
safiyyahwill just hop over19:44
foobarrysorry, i saw 519:44
daftykinssafiyyah: sorry was just on a game there19:44
foobarryand thought 5yo19:44
daftykinssafiyyah: ok so are you in nano right now?19:44
safiyyah5am in the morning!!!19:44
safiyyahyes19:44
safiyyahdaftykins yes19:44
daftykinssafiyyah: hmm actually if you would "pastebinit /etc/hosts" from another terminal it'd be handy19:45
safiyyahalready started changing it19:45
safiyyahdaftykins19:45
safiyyahwondering how to save the changes19:45
daftykinsah ok :)19:46
daftykinsctrl+x19:46
safiyyah"pastebinit /etc/hosts19:46
daftykinsthen confirm the file name and hit enter19:46
safiyyahhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/8509691/19:46
daftykinsshould break out and return to the prompt from before19:46
safiyyahsorry that the old one19:46
daftykinsthat's alright19:46
daftykinsjust the one entry to change19:46
safiyyahcool19:47
daftykinsnow repeat for /etc/hostname19:47
safiyyahthis is the changed file19:47
safiyyahhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/8509703/19:47
daftykinsperfect19:48
safiyyahhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/8509709/19:48
safiyyahnew hostname19:48
safiyyahI think I have to reboot for changes to take effect?19:49
safiyyahlet me get that guest account disables while am at it first19:49
safiyyahas far a browsers go, are you guys still singing the praises for google chrome?19:49
safiyyahor what is everyone using now?19:49
daftykinsi never personally did, though i've never used it on Linux19:49
daftykinsfirefox all the way for me \o/19:50
daftykinswith those two files edited then, a restart should give you the name updated19:50
safiyyahyes19:50
safiyyahjust getting rid of the guest account19:51
safiyyahhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/451526/removing-guest-session-at-login-in-ubuntu-14-0419:51
safiyyahthanks for teaching me about nano19:51
safiyyahI would have been wondering what the hell it was just about now19:51
daftykinshaha, and that one actually tells you the commands... vi just makes my mind boggle19:52
daftykinsit's a text editor where even the command to quit the program involves hitting escape then writing :q! to quit without saving, i think19:52
zmoylan-pivi... is an adventure.  something you will eventually have to face and master :-)19:52
daftykinsnever bothered to learn that one19:52
daftykinshave to? surely not ;)19:52
daftykinsi am a little concerned about the deprecation of gksu though19:53
zmoylan-pisome day you'll find yourself on an unfamiliar system with only vi ;-)19:53
safiyyahokay rebooting.... moment of truth19:53
zmoylan-piand it is a good editor with some great features if you can master them19:53
daftykinsi'm sure it is, but i just don't understand this mindset that wants to complicate even a text editor19:54
safiyyahdaftykins.... all done!19:55
safiyyahno guest account too19:55
safiyyahright now onto favourite packages etc, the fun bit.19:55
safiyyahand a gnome desktop19:55

daftykinsarsenip: not sure if you saw my talk about how long the game took to install XD 36GB install from BD, 40 minutes20:10
safiyyahdaftykins, is there a reason why ubuntu if sticking with the window controls on the right instead of the left?20:10
daftykinssafiyyah: 'being different' i think is about as close to their official reason :D20:10
diddledanwait, the window contropls are on the right again?20:11
daftykinsi don't even know. i don't use ubuntu as a desktop, much less with unity20:15
diddledanI tend to rely on the availability of adobe photoshop for work so I am usually elsewhere than ubuntu when working and thus tend to stay elsewhere in my offtime20:16
diddledanos x wins out unfortunately20:17
daftykinsi can't stand the window management in that OS20:18
diddledanI'd love to immerse myself in ubuntu goodness but adobe software is kind-of a dealbreaker20:18
daftykinsor rather, mismangement :>20:18
safiyyahlol20:18
daftykinsi know it's never the same nor even a good idea, but i heard PS support through WINE got vastly improved recently?20:18
safiyyahPS?20:18
diddledanwell I'll be violated by monkey!: https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=2983220:20

diddledanthere's a yoof with a sewing machine tied to a pair of wheels outside20:21
daftykinsdiddledan: i did! :D20:21
diddledanhe's annoying me20:21

diddledanthat could end up annoying20:22
daftykins:D20:22
daftykinsdiddledan: can't have it all! but you're a pro so you use all the keyboard shortcuts right? :)20:26

=== Lcawte|Away is now known as Lcawte
ali1234hey does anyone remember a couple of years ago when i said that opening linux to mainstream users will just lead to developer burnout?21:43
safiyyahand did it?21:44
ali1234yup21:44
ali1234we had two meltdowns in the past week21:44
safiyyahat the office or here?21:44
ali1234on the internet21:44
ali1234neither ubuntu developers however21:44
safiyyahi think we can attribute the melt downs to modern life21:44
ali1234nope21:45
safiyyahneed to reboot21:45
daftykinsali1234: you know what this means21:46
daftykinsmore devs needed21:46
ali1234does it mean i was right all along?21:46
ali1234well yeah, that was my whole point21:46
daftykinsoh ok21:46
ali1234we need more devs if we are going to have more users21:46
daftykinstime to get recruiting!21:46
ali1234specifically, if we drive away one developer for every ten users we gain, that is not a win21:47
ali1234all that does is increase the workload for the developers who are left21:47
safiyyahdaftykins, sorry got carried away shopping for wallpaper. There was one that said 'your distro, your rules' can't find it!!! anyway..... when I log in there is no choice to switch to gnome21:48
safiyyahi installed it!21:48
daftykinssafiyyah: hmm, i don't know how to switch sessions with lightdm i'm afraid21:48
Myrttiali1234: who? lennart and/or someone else?21:49
daftykinsperhaps one of these fine channel members can point you in the right direction21:49
ali1234Myrtti: lennart and mjg21:49
safiyyahlol21:50
safiyyahanyone?21:50
ali1234you have to click a little arrow thing to open the advanced controls?21:50
ali1234although lightdm has different "skins"21:50
safiyyahnothing is going to sell unity to me ali21:51
safiyyahnothing21:51
safiyyahits crap and I dont like it21:51
ali1234i agree totally21:51
ali1234i can't stand unity or gnome21:51
directhexi empathise with lennart, and 100% support mjg5921:51
Myrttimjg didn't stop intel bigfixing because of open source and linux people though21:52
safiyyahlol ali1234  you are mr xfce?21:52
ali1234safiyyah yes21:52
safiyyahcant stand xfce either21:52
safiyyahits better than unity21:52
directhexi've been the villain for contributing to open source. i've had to explain to a therapist "yeah, there are websites dedicated to attacking me & driving me out of my hobby communities because i donate my free time in the wrong places"21:52
ali1234xfce is not easy to use21:52
safiyyahbut I think I came onto linux in gutsy21:52
safiyyahand fell for gnome21:52
safiyyahand never fell out of love21:52
ali1234it's not for everyone, but unlike unity and gnome it doesn't try to be21:53
directhexMyrtti, they're the same people.21:53
ali1234so we're perfectly okay with people not liking it :)21:53
directhexMyrtti, try my browser extension, it helps add clarity to the issue21:53
safiyyahokay am just installing gnome (again) for some reason it didn't install last time21:53
safiyyahthen am back on track with the clicking Ali21:53
safiyyahand where is one to click exactly?21:54
ali1234on the login screen there's should be like a ">" next to your user name21:54
ali1234or it might point down, i don't remember21:54
ali1234if you click it it opens some more options21:54
Myrttipossibly, bu... what, huh, browser extension? uh, no. I try to keep both problems at arms length.21:55
daftykinssafiyyah: xfce has really come along in the last while, i have xubuntu installed on some old laptop somewhere and i find it lovely21:55
daftykinsnone of the fancy effects on that one though i think, it's non-compositing?21:55
daftykinsif that's even the correct term.21:55
safiyyahdaftykins, I will check for xfce youtube videos and let you know now21:57
ali1234directhex: do you remember the first time we ever spoke on irc?21:58
directhexali1234, no. i have little memory, short or long term.21:59
directhexwouldn't mind if i was a pothead, at least there'd be a reason21:59
ali1234well, i remember it, because you were extremely rude to me... and i was just trying to help you get your ps3 dvd remote to work22:01
safiyyahali1234, I can see why you are having a love affair with xfce22:01
safiyyahcompletley customisable22:01
safiyyahunity must feel like prison for you22:02
ali1234safiyyah it feels more like a big ball of confusion... i have likened the unity window switcher to playing the shell game before22:03
ali1234nothing is ever in the same place twice, it's like the computer is gas-lighting me22:03
directhexali1234, i don't remember the specifics, but it's entirely feasible. i'd like to think i've matured as the years have gone by. if i was unjustly abrasive, i'm sorry.22:03
directhexi won't pretend that's not something i might have done. and we certainly rarely agree on things. but i don't think dickery is needed over disagreement.22:04
safiyyahdirecthex I spilled my tea laughing at your very manly apology22:04
diddledandirecthex: language! instead of d**kery use "willy..ery"22:06
safiyyahwhy cant it just be "I am sorry, can we start over" no... in true manly fashion, we must first explain what is right about us (in this case we have now matured),22:06
ali1234directhex: thank you. apology accepted22:06
safiyyahanyone else notice this about men22:06
safiyyah?22:06
directhexsafiyyah, i hadn't, but you could well be right.22:07
safiyyahOMG! this gnome installation is going to take all night22:07
safiyyahdirecthex, well atleast you made up :)22:07
directhexsafiyyah, i'd love to think that i benefit from being capable of introspection22:08
safiyyahdirecthex, do not use that route to apologise to a woman, it will be percieved that you are trying to say that you did no wrong, and the 'wrong' is based on the woman's perception of the deed, in which case you are not really sorry22:08
safiyyahand then the argument will continue22:09
safiyyahbecause now the problem will be that you don't get what you did wrong....22:09
safiyyahdirecthex, am not pointing at introspection, I sometimes just enjoy the differences between the genders, we are just very different.22:10
ali1234i think another factor in all this is that the common enemy (microsoft) has now been defeated... and the anger is now turning in on itself22:11
directhexsafiyyah, ok. i took your comments as somewhat patronising. i've been married 8 years & know how to communicate with my wife when apologies are needed.22:11
safiyyahdirecthex, am not in your marriage.... all due respect. I cannot comment on how well you do or do not do things there22:12
safiyyahits a sacred union. You would know the best way around your wife22:12
safiyyahI commented 'women' not 'wife'22:13
directhexfair enough22:13
directhexi should go to bed. a bottle of archers is not the best lens for discussion of some topics.22:13
safiyyahsorry you felt patronised22:13
safiyyahsoftware centre seems to have crashed22:15
safiyyahcan I kill it and restart the install?22:15
safiyyahali1234,22:15
ali1234no22:16
safiyyahI have to leave it?22:16
ali1234no, that won't work either22:16
ali1234you have to figure out why it has frozen22:16
ali1234it might have popped a requester under another window22:17
ali1234or you might have another package manager open22:17
ali1234or it might be the bug where it does this22:17
safiyyahno22:17
safiyyahnone of the above22:17
safiyyahit's grayed itself out22:18
ali1234if you kill it, it may leave the system in an inconsistent state, so i wouldn't recommend it22:18
ali1234you may have no choice though22:18
safiyyahwell I am trying to install gnome22:19
safiyyahcan't I kill it and reinstall the same thing?22:19
ali1234maybe22:19
safiyyahwon't that fix the problem?22:19
ali1234it will probably just get to the same point and then freeze again22:20
safiyyahinteresting point, the software centre just continued where it left off22:21
safiyyahthe marker was still showing half way22:21
ali1234software center doesn't actually install anything, it is done by a background process22:21
safiyyahit didnt restart the installation, just continued again22:22
ali1234yes because you only killed the front end, not the background process22:23
ali1234i bet it still won't finish though22:23
ali1234or it might just take a really long time22:23
safiyyahdamn!22:23
safiyyahit22:23
ali1234who knows? software centre doesn't provide any feedback about what the installer is doing, so there's no way to tell22:23
safiyyahit's starting to grey out again22:23
ali1234there is a log somewhere which might reveal what is happening22:23
safiyyahI think I have to purge all the files and start again22:24
safiyyahquestion is what am I purging22:24
safiyyahOh!!!! it finished!22:25
safiyyahwonder of wonders22:25
safiyyahokay am calling it a night, got gnome going22:30
safiyyahnight all22:30
daftykinsnn22:33
daftykinsnice to hear from you again \o22:34
daftykinshttp://twitch.tv/daftpunkle - doing a little bit of streaming of Forza Horizon 222:40
daftykinslove that you can do this now :)22:40
safiyyahdaftykins, thank you so much for today!22:46
=== Lcawte is now known as Lcawte|Away
popeydaftykins: that koenigsegg looks fun ☻23:03
daftykins^_^23:03
daftykinsit sure was!23:05
popeyits amazing quality video streaming23:06
daftykinsthat's good, this is the xbox one using the built in twitch streaming app23:07
daftykinsi'd been having issues recently but given i only have 5Mb upload it's pretty decent :)23:07
daftykinsno perceivable slowdown on the console, too23:07
popeyit was not much different than watching a locally recorded lets play23:10
popeybuffered a tiny bit now and then23:10
popeynot much23:10
ali1234i tried to stream on twitch the other day but i only have 500kB upstream; it didn't really work very well23:13
ali1234also i had to install the real ffmpeg to make open broadcaster work23:14
ali1234other than that it was surprisingly easy to set up23:14
daftykinsneat :)23:14
daftykinspopey: ta for the feedback! :)23:14
ali1234open broadcaster is a pretty nice app - it can composite a bunch of arbitrary video streams from multiple sources into a real time feed23:15
daftykinsis that the one i hear referred to as 'obs'?23:15
ali1234yes23:15
ali1234this game has good graphics23:19
daftykinsindeed! where it really shines, but hasn't come up in my game here yet... is the weather effects23:20
daftykinsthey are absolutely jaw dropping23:20
ali1234can you knock over trees?23:20
ali1234the lighting is beautiful but i'm guessing most of it is baked?23:21
daftykinstrees tend to be immovable, but shrubs and bushes etc are quite destructible this time23:21
ali1234ah... but do they have nice shadows? ;)23:21
daftykinscase in point 8D23:21
daftykins(several seconds delay in the feed of course)23:22
ali1234somewhat difficult to tell. i think that the sign post had a dynamic shadow though23:23
daftykinsaww i saw a great zela (or rather Link) thing to put on the side of my car earlier23:25
daftykinsit looked muchly amusing :>23:25
daftykins(i'm not really into ricing up cars)23:25
ali1234find one that says "yoloswag" or something23:25
ali1234isn't that basically the mitsubishi logo?23:28
daftykinstriforce :D from Zelda also23:28
daftykinsah what, it messed up O_O23:29
ali1234are there other people driving around in your game that see your car?23:29
ali1234if so, how do they prevent you painting offensive things on it?23:30
daftykinsat present the other drivers are 'driveatars' based upon game data from people on my friends list or other randomers23:30
daftykinseventually, i'll be able to get online and be in freeroam public sessions where others would see them yep23:30
daftykinshaha i don't think they have, i'd imagine there might be an attempt at worded profanity but no ideas on prevention of it23:31
ali1234does it save in the cloud? do you see your friend's car designs even though they're not actually driving the ai car in your game?23:31
daftykinsyep - one of my friends i've seen driving around in this car but with one of the designs from the marketplace23:32
daftykins(you can make and sell them, with in-game currency)23:32
daftykinsjust virtually earnt through racing i believe, no actual in-game purchasing23:33
ali1234if you make a really good design you can sell it to other players?23:33
daftykinsyip! let me have a quick look at the market23:33
daftykinsso i saw a friend driving around in this one earlier23:34
ali1234that's crazy!23:34
daftykinslol at this design23:35
daftykinsaww boo i failed23:39
ali1234seems like the RNG got you that time23:43
ali1234if that other car hadn't been turning left...23:44
daftykins*nod* pesky traffic23:45
daftykinscouldn't correct in time23:45
ali1234and now you're offline23:46
daftykinsah :( perhaps it has decided to flake out still23:46
daftykinsit seems i'm not getting the full effect as only two friends have played the demo so far, not bought it23:48
ali1234ah you're back23:51
daftykinsoddly i found it had quit the twitch app, so i had to kick it into action again23:52
daftykinsi think it's time to stop for tonight now though :D23:52
