pjotterHi everybody. I just upgraded to 14.04 and was wondering if I can change the right-side scrollbars? In maximized apps, the scrollbar is just a few pixels from the right side of the screen to the left. So I have to be very precise when I want to scroll.01:27

pjotterhello everybody09:32
pjotterI just upgraded to 14.0409:33
pjotterAt first glance: looks great. But I ran into a little problem.09:35
pjotterIt's a problem with the layout of the vertical scrollbars.09:40
pjotterIn maximised applications, the right vertical scroll-bar is a few pixels off to the left. So, I almost always mis-click it when I try to adjust the scrollbar. Is there any sollution for this? I tried different layouts. But all standard layouts in Xubuntu seem to have this.09:42
knosyspjotter: what resolution do you use? im with fullhd and i can do it pretty good09:52
pjotterHi knysos,  res is 1920x1200. But that really doesn't matter. The proble is that the right-side scrollbars of many maximised applications are just a few pixels off to the left. So, when you seep the mouse to the right to quickly adjust the vertical scrollbar, you wind up clicking on the few pixels to the right of the scrollbar instead of the scrollbar itself.10:09
pjottersepp=sweep10:10
knomepjotter, that's because how the themes are built, they have a slight padding in the window10:10
pjotterI seem to have problems with the keyboard aswell :)10:10
knomepjotter, iirc, there are themes that are borderless and have the scrollbar at the absolute right10:10
pjotterknome: I come from 12.04 and don't remember it was in there?10:10
knomethemes evolve10:11
pjotterknome: Do you know any such that might resemble the standard Greybird default?10:11
knomei don't know the other themes well enough to judge that, but i'd imagine not10:12
pjotterknome: I know, but this doesn't feel like an improvement to me. Any ideas why they changed this?10:12
knomethe themes that are borderless are usually trying to save space or look very distinct otherwise10:12
knomepjotter, we had problems with too thin borders (they produced some rendering errors for some), but that wouldn't completely explain it... but it could be anything10:13
knomeochosi would know, or have better insight to it anyway, he built the theme10:14
pjotterGreybird?10:14
knomeyes10:14
pjotterAh, great! Maybe I'll try asking him when he's here.10:15
knomesure10:15
ochosithe rounded scrollbars with a little padding were mostly an aesthetic choice10:15
pjotterI also tried altering the theme. But for some reason that causes other problems in the scrollbars.10:15
ochosiand many use scrollwheels or two-finger-scrolling anyway10:15
knosysHey guys, an hour ago or so, i restarted after few packages installations, and a big accident (I removed /etc/enviroment and created a new ~/.profile ), after all that i reboot and i couldnt login through lightdm. But i could access recovery mode , and in channel #ubuntu a guy was helping me. I restored /etc/enviroment to what it should look like, and also i had to reinstall lighdm. After all that, it worked10:15
knosysand now im on X again. The main problem is that lightdm cant find some library resources, and we fixed it making a link in /usr/bin targetting to /usr/sbin. That fixed everything.10:15
ochosiyeah, you can't really have rounded scrollbars and no padding, afaik10:16
pjotterI don't. I use a wacom pen-tablet.10:16
pjotterHey ochosi!10:16
knosysso i wonder how could i fix that "cleaner" i mean.. how can i remove that link and even then lightdm can find the appropiate resources to start10:16
ochosipjotter: you can use a theme like numix, that has the type of scrollbars you want. you can also copy the scrollbar sections in both gtk-2.0 and -3.0 to greybird and try to work your way from there10:17
knomeknosys, "if it isn't broken, don't fix it"10:19
knosysbut its ugly10:19
pjotterochosi: Alright. I already tried setting the trough-border option to 0. It kind of works, but the scroll-button then becomes square.10:19
knosysim having path variables thanks to a link10:19
ochosipjotter: yeah, as i said, iirc you can't have rounded scrollbars and 0 padding10:20
knosysalso, i have /etc/enviroment that its completely being ignored10:20
knosysdont know why, it wont read that file10:20
knomemaybe the file permissions are wrong...10:20
pjotterochosi: Ok, so that's a technical limitation as-well?  Not just ecstatic10:20
knosysoh that sounds possible10:20
knosysi will check for that10:21
ochosipjotter: well, rounded scrollbars are aesthetic ;)10:21
knosyshow show them be to allow read for lightdm?10:21
knosysshould*10:21
pjotter:D I was looking for the correct word, but the auto spelling didn't have it! :D10:21
knomeknosys, i've no idea.10:21
knosyscould u check for a second with chmod?10:21
knosyssorry, with ls10:22
knosys-rw-r--r-- 1 root root10:22
pjotterAlright. I'll try fiddling with the numix theme. Thanks for the advice!10:22
knosystheese are mine10:22
knomeknosys, that looks right.10:22
knosysand the content10:22
knomeknosys, i'd either keep what you have, or do a clean install10:23
knome(if you insist on having a "clean" system)10:23
knosysno10:23
knosysis not only that10:23
knosysits to understand the system of path10:23
knosysand what is happened10:23
knosyshappening*10:23
knosysbut its ok really10:24
knosysnot a rush at all10:24
knosysi think reinstalling is not necesary if im able to put everything in order again10:25
ochosipjotter: no problem, and good luck10:32

flindermouseHi, I am having a problem with a xubuntu-based webserver, apache2 is started but not loading webpages. I don't know where to look. Can anybody help?17:31
holsteinflindermouse: should be the same apache as anywhere.. the xubuntu part really shouldnt matter. can you vist the page at localhost?17:33
holsteinflindermouse: try localhost on the machine.. try the machines' ip from the machine.. try pinging the machines from another box..  then, try accessing that machine via IP on the same network17:33
flindermouseI get 500 internal error when I browse to its IP. There are multiple websites hosted on this box, so it may not respond on that17:35
flindermousethis server got taken offline due to power outage. Its virtual, but it was unable to mount some directories in /var/www17:35
holsteinflindermouse: sounds like a mess. i would start with the basics.. see what is working and what is not..17:35
flindermouseholstein: sorry, it has been a while since I've used IRC17:35
flindermouseholstein: Apache2 as a service is not showing problems. a recent line in my error.log is "[core:alert] [pid 2114] client (some Ip) /var/www/(somewebsite)/.htaccess <IFmodule not allowed here17:39
holsteinflindermouse: sure.. i would just remove *all* of that content, and test basic apache loading locally17:39
holsteinthis would remove many variables from the equation17:39
holsteini dont think you have an issue with apache either.. but, i would test and see17:40
flindermouseso, browse to http://serverIP?17:40
flindermouseholstein: so, browse to http://serverIP?17:40
holsteinflindermouse: i would literally get locally on the actual device, and go to local host.. this removes the networking connections and firewalls from the equation17:40
holsteini am assuming a box on your local network, however.. since you are running xubuntu on it17:41
flindermouseholstein: yes, it is. I neither set it up not maintained it, and its been a while since I worked with this, so troubleshooting is difficult17:42
holsteini would try simply pinging.. then, look at or pull down my firewalls, as long as its all behind my router, or on a router not connected to the internet17:43
holsteinthen, would remove/backup the current content.. and see that apache is working17:43
m3n3chm0dear all guys, any way to automatic loggin into Teamviewer ?? the checkbox is already enabled but I have to input my username&password always at startup17:44
holsteinm3n3chm0: you would need to ask teamviewer.. its not an ubuntu package we can support.. i seem to remember an unattended server mode with teamviewer17:45
m3n3chm0ok17:45
holsteini thought it was something to be decided at install in windows.. but, thats the only way i have ever set up the server mode.. in windows17:46
tirelihello18:41
tireliI just installed Xubuntu 14.10 beta 2 and I found a strange problem. I can't change the default application for plain text files. The default application is Abiword and I can't find to change it18:46
tireliI quickly searched on the bug tracker for this bug but didn't found it (yet)18:47
drctireli:  You can't right click on the text file icon>general> and change Open with: and change it?18:49
tireliI tried right click > "Open with another app" > [I select mousepad and check "use this action by default for this type of file"]18:50
tireliAnd also right click > Properties > Open with [Mousepad]18:50
drcThat should work also, but try it my way, just to see what happens.18:51
tireliBut Abiword is still the default app18:51
drcon, nevermind :)18:51
tireliI tried again but nothing changed18:51
drcJust to eliminate one possible cause, can you try either way with another text file?18:52
tireliI also looked in the mime type manager in preferences and mousepad is the default app for plain text file18:52
drcand you are sure that it's a Plain Text File? (Look in Properties>Kind on the file in question).18:53
tirelifile -i Nouveau\ fichier\ vide.txt18:54
tireliNouveau fichier vide.txt: text/plain; charset=us-ascii18:54
tireliSince I just installed Xubuntu Unicorn 14.10 beta, there is no other text editor so I just installe leafpad and did Properties > Open With [Leafpad] but Abiword is still opening when double clicking18:55

holsteini would try as another user.. or the guest user..18:56
tireliOk, I am going to try with another user, be right back18:57
tireliSo19:01
tireliWith the guest session, I created a empty file, opened it and Abiword started. Then i did Properties > Open With [leafpad] and double click : leafpad started, then I did again Properties > Open With and changed to Mousepad but it's still leafpad which start19:02
tireliIn other words, I am not capable of reproducing the exact same bug19:04
holsteintireli: and, i wouldnt assume the term "bug" just yet..19:04
tireliGonna check if the bug is in "Known bug" of the news on xubuntu.org19:05
elfyit's not for sure19:05
elfynot even sure what to tell you to report it against either tbh19:06
tireliholstein: let's call it a problem on my computer19:06
tireliis there other way to check mime type / file association or is thunar relying on other thing to launch default application ?19:07
elfytireli: there's a mimetype editor in settings19:07
tireliI tried adding association in .local/share/applications/mimeapp.list but nothing19:14
holsteintireli: i say, if you think you have a bug, look for a bug about it. it would be great to fix it before release.. if you find one, join it.. if you dont, you can make one and try and get it confirmed19:15
