Finetundrai am now in recovery mode, it seems that it's having trouble reading the drive00:08
bennypr0fanejayar, for me it's just right-clicking a file that'S located on the server, then say "edit", it opens your default editor, you edit it, save it, and filezilla makes sure the changes are saved directly on the server - pretty neat00:08
jayarbennypr0fane, i'll look through filezilla, right now i'm kinda doin that, but when i "edit file" it just opens in gedit, then when i save it, it uploads automatically, but im still using 2 dif programs00:08

somsiplionroars: yes. More info here for 12.04 but I would imagine it's still relevant http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Precise_Repositories05:02

Noah_ATyup05:06
Noah_ATand the ubuntu server is on a reserved static IP, so no issues there05:06
Noah_ATdaftykins: Connecting via internal IP works instantly which is really frustrating too05:07
daftykinsNoah_AT: good stuff, just backspaced what i typed. i would actually use a non-standard port, as you will start seeing bots and script kiddies trying to bruteforce your box in the access logs, but lets start simple05:07
Noah_ATK, I can easily change that later05:07
daftykinsNoah_AT: ok, if you check out grc.com you can have it check your ports so you can watch for when 22 becomes available05:07

levohi, how can i set up a voice server so that my friend and I could talk to each other, conditions:  no internet access (or any routers) it's just my laptop with ubuntu 14.04 and his android phone06:59
Rorylevo: You would both need to be connected to the same network06:59
levoRory: my laptop's wireless network06:59
Rorylevo: You wouldn't need internet access, but you would need a router06:59
Doc-Saintlyah ok, didn't know they had their own channel :)07:00
Doc-Saintlythanks07:00
levoRory: it's possible to create a local network using my laptop network card (wireless)07:00

Rorytrupheenix: You can't recover encrypted data like that... the whole point is to prevent that sort of thing :)07:01
trupheenixRory, I'm logged in. I lost files in my home directory. How do I get them back?07:02
ikoniatrupheenix: do you REALLY need encyption ?07:02
levoRory: phone connecting to laptop's hotspot network is possible, so you say dragon remote mic on android, and what should be installed on ubuntu?07:02
trupheenixikonia, no but the installer prompted me when I installed the last time and the home directory got encrypted. I totally forgot about this and kept using the system for almost 9 months now.07:03

not_roastedHello friends. Question - is there a way to scale up the icons in Ubuntu? I'm talking the icons you see within certain applications, such as Open, New, Save, etc. I have a special case here at work (school district) where a student could benefit from much larger text/icons. The display scaling (system settings >> displays >> scaling) doesn't seem to cut the butter for this in particular.14:22

Noah_ATHey guys! Originally my issue was trying to connect to my ubuntu sever via SSH using my external IP. Initally I had two routers with double NAT configured. Last night I turned off the DHCP server of the second router and now NAT is handled by the first and the second is just a switch. Problem now is that the second router (switch) drops all connections every 20min and I have to power cycle to reconnect19:58

Jordan_Uguest1877: Edit /etc/hosts with "sudo nano /etc/hosts" and add a new line containing "127.0.0.1    your_new_hostname_here". That is assuming that you can manage to successfully run "sudo nano /etc/hosts", which you probably can't.20:09
guntbertNoah_AT: neither the comcast nor the netgear are running Ubuntu, are they?20:09
yuriksijwow: git is a version control system, not an FTP client. You probably want to read up on it20:09

ijwowJordan_U, it eliminates the risk to lose files that way, to have the files always at hand and be able to retrace what was done, I guess20:11
Noah_ATguntbert: Negative. This whole problem started when I was trying to forward ports to SSH into my ubuntu server externally. My network was working great, but I was behind double NAT and someone suggested I disable DHCP and use the second router as a switch. Now it fails every 30min20:11

jfloryHello all, I am looking for some advice about running Ubuntu on a rather... challenging device. I have an iMac desktop, specifically, the 7,1 2007 model, which seems to be renowned for having issues with Linux in general. I had tried installing Fedora before and ended up being unable to run X on it. So...21:16
jfloryI was looking at the Ubuntu Documentation, and I found info for running 10.04 / 10.10 on my iMac, but I couldn't find anything about more recent versions.21:17

jakesylHey guys, why am I getting a syntax error on : for %f in (*.docx) do w2m %f21:20
Jordan_Ujflory: Start by just trying to boot from an Lubuntu 14.04 LiveCD/USB (Lubuntu since this is an older machine), if the Live environment works well then you'll probably be fine installing normally as well.21:21
jakesylit says '(' was unexpected21:21
bekksjakesyl: Because thats an invalid syntax.21:21
jakesylwhy?21:21
Sunstreamlubuntu rules. Unity is just all purdy (pretty) :)21:22
Jordan_Ujflory: There were so many odd ugly hacks for macs in those days that I don't recommend trying any suggestsions from years ago on a modern system without a lot of consideration. And I don't recommend just running an old version of Ubuntu either :)21:22
bekksjakesyl: Because it is invalid. Valid syntax would look like: for i in *.docx; do ...; done21:22
eeeejakesyl: for f in *.docx; do w2m $f; done21:22
Jordan_Ueeee: jflory for f in *.docx; do w2m "$f"; done # Don't forget to quote your variables either.21:23
eeee^^ yeah21:23
jfloryJordan_U: Noted! In that case, I will see if I can get an Lubuntu 14.04 USB booted off my iMac and see where that takes me.21:24

acerspyroHm. Stuck at the timezone selection screen in the install. The "Continue" button stays grayed out.23:29
daftykinsjoseki: what 'work' did you perform on one of the two disks though?23:30
acerspyroomg fast my disk drive sounds like a dying baby pigeon.23:30

josekii failed a drive out of an array and the repartitioned the failed drive. i needed to reboot to make the partition changes effective and then i was going to resync23:34
acerspyrook, it won't accept Montreal, which is misspelt as Mont-Real23:35

Doc-SaintlyIs there an easy way to connect to wifi through comand line? :( can't I just say SSID / Pass? All the guides I see online are more complex than that23:37
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: if you want it easy use the network manager gui23:38
Doc-Saintlyikonia: don't have the GUI, seems like there has to be a method between a GUI and typing my password in binary ;)23:38
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: it's not as simple as "ifconfig wlan0 SSID=blah pass=boo"23:38
Doc-Saintlywhy not >.<23:38
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: is there a reason you're not using the gui ?23:38
kostkonDoc-Saintly, https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NetworkManager#Using_NetworkManager_on_the_command_line23:38
zteamikonia, he is probably using Ubuntu server or someething23:39
Doc-Saintlyyes23:39
ikoniazteam:....with a wireless card....23:39
Mirbuntu#opensuse-chat23:39
ikoniayou can put a gui on a server install23:39
Mirbuntudamnit23:39
Mirbuntu<.<23:39
Mirbuntu>.>23:40
* Mirbuntu runs away23:40
zteamikonia, what would the problem with that be?23:40
ikoniaor even better, just use a desktop install23:40
ikoniazteam: no problem with it, just not the norm23:40
ikoniamore so if configuring the wireless card outside of network manager it outside of your current knowledge range23:40
Doc-Saintlyikonia: I'm not opposed to learning, but that doesn't mean I won't ask the question "Why are we forced to do ti this way"23:41
zteamikonia, maybe not, but why using a a ethernet cable if you don't have to23:41
zteamikonia, :-)23:41
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: because there is more to confiugring a wireless card than a username and password23:41
ikoniaand a sid23:41
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: and linux splits the interface configuration and wireless stack into two seperate processes23:41
Doc-Saintlyikonia: I'm well aware of that, and yet somehow, a GUI can do it with just that - which shows that it's possible to figure it out23:42
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: yes, the gui does the 2 processes for you23:42
Doc-Saintlybut apparently enough people don't complain about it or just deal with it, and use these cumbersome config files23:42
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: and network manager can do it on the command line23:42
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: it's not cumversome, it's 3 lines on top of the additonal network config23:42
ikoniawhich considering it's managing two processes is nothing23:42
k1lDoc-Saintly: there are very good GUI programs and no one runs a server on wifi. so there are some cli methods but not the most easy ones as you would like23:43
monkwitdafunkAcerspyro, try tzdata if you cannot ask for ntp or uninstall every module you do not need23:45
Doc-Saintlyyea, I wouldn't be using server if lubuntu wasn't down. I was going to use xubuntu but saw that even it had a 750 MB memory footprint23:45

ikonialubuntu down ?23:45
k1lDoc-Saintly: hmm, can you rephrase? that doesnt make sense to me at all23:45
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: in what way is lubuntu "down" ? the website ?23:45
ikonia750mb foot print on xubuntu ?23:45
Doc-Saintlyikonia: when I tried to access the website last night do download the iso, it wasn't responding23:46
monkwitdafunkI hear of a antimalware company using lubuntu to fix wintel systems that have malware23:46
ikoniaI've run it in about 300mb23:46
acerspyromonkwitdafunk: nvm, install failed, it says something's wrong with my DVD23:46
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: it's up now23:46
Doc-Saintlyikonia: I did a fresh install and it was showing 750 :(23:46
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: I doubt that23:46
Doc-Saintlybasically, this is all for a dom0 under xen. And it's just a testing lab23:46
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: I suspect you've seen caching23:46
Doc-Saintlyikonia: well, it wouldn't be the first time you've made lots of assumptions that I've seen today ;)23:46
acerspyroOh, man, I am so happy this install crashed.23:46
acerspyroThat fricking disk drive.23:46
zteamikonia, threre is lxde too, if RAM is your issue23:46
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: it would be23:46
ikoniaDoc-Saintly: I've not made any assumptions23:47
josekilooks like the uuid might have somehow changed. is there a way to modify BOOT_IMAGE and then tell initramfs to try and boot?23:47
k1lDoc-Saintly: lubuntu hp works fine23:47
Doc-Saintlyzteam: I was the one mentioning wanting the thinner client.23:47
acerspyroBtw, imma DD the .iso on my iPod shuffle23:47
zteamikonia, sorry that was meant to Doc-Saintly23:47
Doc-Saintlyyep, it seems to be up just fine now23:47
ikoniazteam: not a problem23:47
zteamDoc-Saintly, sorry, that was meant for you :-)23:47
Doc-Saintlyzteam: yep, figured ;)23:47

ikoniait has nothing to do with the kernel23:48
zteamDoc-Saintly, I'm a little bit tired now :p23:48
Doc-Saintlyikonia: er, yea sorry - i was thinking linux mint LXDE23:48
ikoniathat makes no sense23:48
k1lDoc-Saintly: but you seem to be mixing a lot of things here.23:48
Doc-Saintlythanks k1l , looking into it23:48
zteamDoc-Saintly, how do you mean? the kernel hasn't anything to do with desktop enviroment23:49
josekiok23:49
Doc-Saintlyzteam: indeed, but as I said, I was mixing up Linux Mint LXDE with the idea of installing my own desktop environment23:49
josekiso now i've mounted the proper root partition in /root23:49
Doc-Saintlyand when I looked at LM LXDE it was using an older kernel (IIRC, but it was 2 am)23:50
k1lDoc-Saintly: or get your Lubuntu iso here http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/23:50
k1lDoc-Saintly: and since you seem to want to customize a lot you should think about making a minimal install and then install your DE23:50
zteamDoc-Saintly, okey, otherwise you can just ran sudo apt-get install tasksel and then run sudo tasksel and choose lxde desktop23:51
Doc-Saintlyyea, or the site appears to be working now. Well, honestly, all this is more pain than I feel like putting up with thus far. The whole point of getting a newer kernel is so I can use the wireless card in the cases I don't have a hard connection23:51
eeeejoseki: you have a seperate /root ?23:51
josekiyes23:52
Doc-Saintlyand I don't want to install a GUI just to do the wireless because it's just a once or twice thing, I just expected it to be easier23:52
monkwitdafunkWill ubuntu trusty always be using kernel 3.13?23:52
josekii have mounted / into /root (as this seems to be what initramfs does23:52
Doc-Saintlyanyway, thanks for the suggestions all. I'm going to step away from this before I do something stupid like start using Hyper-V23:52
k1lmonkwitdafunk: you can get a new kernel with the enablement stack23:53
josekimdadm is available in initramfs and shows my array with the failed drive23:53
monkwitdafunkTrusty uses kernel 3.13 right? what if i wanted to stay with.kernel 3.13?23:53
k1lmonkwitdafunk: just stay on 14.0423:53
monkwitdafunkno. Trusty is r23:54
josekii'm not sure what to do next now i guess23:54
monkwitdafunkUsing 3.1323:54
eeeemonkwitdafunk: you could look into apt_preferences ( man apt_preferences )23:54
monkwitdafunkprecise uses 3.523:54
josekibut /root is what i want to be booting off of23:54
k1lmonkwitdafunk: please get the facts straight. you asked for 3.1323:54
monkwitdafunki want my lan to have a homogenious kernel and grml in addition to knoppix is great23:55
