jasoncollege24in kubuntu (currently running LiveCD) I have 2 monitors. 1 is DVI and the other is VGA, which goes to a VGA to HDMI converter to my TV. Display options doesn't have the native resolution, or other supported high resolutions. lspci | grep VGA output says "01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV300 [Radeon x600]02:11
jasoncollege24i tried using xrandr to add the desired resolution, but when i applied it, the TV went to power saving (no signal) until i turned it back.02:13

MinimalLakanyone know how to install vega strike in kubuntu without using wine?06:42
MinimalLakI downloaded all the files from sourceforge since the tutorial it gave me to do it through the konsole didn't work06:42
MinimalLakI ended up extracting all the files into their respective folders, went to the vegastrike data folder, found what I think was the script to install the thing, but when I looked at it through konsole using the ls -all command, it didnt show it as green06:44
MinimalLakor do I do that through the source code folder of its files?06:44
valorieMinimalLak: isn't there a readme somewhere?06:46
MinimalLakI think06:46
MinimalLakbut when I looked through it06:46
valoriethere should be, to give you instructions06:46
MinimalLakI couldnt find anything relavent to installing it through regular linux06:46
valoriealso, you should be able to read the script in a text editor06:46
MinimalLakbut then again, I was doing it at 2 am, and I was crashing fast06:47
valorieheh06:47
MinimalLakso I probably didnt look hard enough06:47
MinimalLakplus, I tried looking through the vegastrike wiki, but if I remember right, it led me back to the tutorial to install it through konsole06:47
MinimalLakso no help there06:47
valorieif you tried at 2am, it's always worth re-checking all your steps06:48
valorieskipping a vital step is rather common06:48
MinimalLakalso, just as a side note, when I did install it through wine, it did work and boot up, but in vmware player, the cursor was stuck on the top of the screen and wouldnt scroll freely06:49
MinimalLakjust left anf right06:49
MinimalLakno ups or downs06:49
valorieso why not run it in wine?06:49
MinimalLakeh, I wanna do it without wine, to challenge myself06:49
MinimalLakin a sense06:49
valoriethat sounds like a big challenge06:50
MinimalLakyep06:50
valorieI'm thinking that #kubuntu isn't where you'll get help, though06:50
MinimalLakplus, after I failed installing it through konsole, and wine bugged the thing for me, I deleted all the files I downloaded06:50
valoriemaybe #linux06:50
MinimalLakhmm06:51
MinimalLakand how would I open #linux in this chat, so I could switch back n forth between rooms?06:52
MinimalLakso unless I have to go through the source folder to install the files, how would I give a perl script the ability to run06:54
MinimalLaki.e make it show up in green font when using the ls -all command?06:54
MinimalLakmaybe that would help06:54
valorieah, you are in the webchat06:54
valorienot sure how you add a channel06:54
MinimalLakbing isnt helping06:55
valoriein konversation, I just click the channelname above, and it adds06:55
MinimalLakim using this room in windows btw, not through linux06:55
valoriewell, mirc is free06:55
valoriethat's what I used in windows06:55
valoriexchat is free06:56
valorieetc.06:56
valorieand I believe that konversation runs in windows as well06:56
MinimalLakech, ill figure out the webchat thing later, thanks though06:56
MinimalLaknow back oto the perl script thing06:56
MinimalLakhow do I make one run when it doesnt have that kind of privelage06:56
valorieI don't know very much about scripting06:57
valorieor perl for that matter06:57
valorielike I said, #linux would suit you better here06:58
MinimalLakthanks for the help tho, imma leave now, starting to get totes tired06:59

Waffl3xcan anyone help me with partitioning my drives?13:27
Waffl3xIm not completely sure how to do it13:27
lordievaderWaffl3x: What are you not sure about?13:27
Waffl3xfirst, how much to partition13:28
Waffl3xsecond, how to actually do it13:28
Waffl3xI have a better idea than yesterday13:28
lordievaderHow do you want it partitioned?13:28
Waffl3xthe best way :D13:28
Waffl3xuhm13:28
lordievaderBy the by, if you don't know what to do, just use the automatic partitioning options within Ubiquity.13:28
lordievaderThere is no best way.13:29
Waffl3xI was told 2 ways if I remember correctly13:29
Waffl3x100 gb for the whole thing13:29
Waffl3xor 3 partitions13:29
Waffl3x25 gb13:29
Waffl3xanother 25 for /home I think13:29
Waffl3xand some to swap13:30
Waffl3xhow much should I put in swap? I think the one guy mentioned 110% of your ram13:30
lordievaderWaffl3x: That amount is recommended if you plan to use hibernation. Else any amount you think necessary.13:31
Waffl3xI dont think I need any since I have 16 gb of ram13:31
Waffl3xam I being silly?13:31
lordievaderLike I said, depends on if you plan to use hibernation.13:32
lordievaderIf you hibernate all the contents of your ram is written to disk.13:32
Waffl3xis that the same thing as windows hibernation?13:32
Waffl3xokay13:32
Waffl3xas I thought13:32
Waffl3xcome to think of it13:32
Waffl3xI might do that13:33
Waffl3xso I might as well13:33
lordievaderOr you could just use the standby option...13:34
Waffl3xI wanted to partition my second hard drive for linux programs, but I was told I didnt need to do that13:34
Waffl3xor I could just save everything and turn it off13:34
Waffl3xis swap only used for hibernation?13:34
=== fabian is now known as Guest75856
lordievaderWaffl3x: No it is also used for when the RAM is full.13:35
lordievaderElse the Out Of Memory killer activates ;)13:36
Waffl3xso in your opinion, do you think its a good idea to partition some swap?13:36
Waffl3xit sounds to me like it might be13:36
lordievaderWaffl3x: Some yes, 16Gb or more would seem like a waste.13:37
Waffl3xhmm13:37
Waffl3x8 gb then I guess13:37
lordievaderI usually keep it at max 5GB. But that's me.13:38
Waffl3xokay so13:38
Waffl3xhow do I do this13:38
Waffl3xI click the current partition13:39
Waffl3xclick change13:39
lordievaderWaffl3x: Boot up using a live-cd. And select the manual partitioner.13:39
Waffl3xim there13:39
Waffl3xand for the size13:40
Waffl3xI do the current size13:40
Waffl3xminus the size I want the new partition to be13:40
Waffl3xright?13:40
lordievaderI'm not sure at what stage you are now. Do you just see an empty disk?13:40
Waffl3xim here13:41
lordievaderWhere is here?13:41
Waffl3xwas going to post a link13:41
Waffl3xim at disk setup13:41
Waffl3xright after you select manual13:41
Waffl3xon the next page13:42
Waffl3xso I see my partitions13:42
Waffl3xdo you understand where I am?13:43
lordievaderWaffl3x: Yes, but if you could post a screenshot that would help ;)13:44
Waffl3xI cant :/13:44
lordievaderHmm, allright. Do you have pre-existing partitions that you would like to keep?13:45
Waffl3xyes13:45
Waffl3xI want to keep the partitions on both harddrives13:46
lordievaderWaffl3x: Have you backed-up your important data?13:46
Waffl3xthere is no irreplaceable data13:47
lordievaderI'll take that as a yes.13:47
Waffl3xexcept on the second harddrive, but we arnt touching that correct?13:47
lordievaderThen resize the existing partitions to make space for the new ones.13:48
Waffl3xjust to confirm13:48
Waffl3xit probably wont delete any data right?13:48
Waffl3xI would just be unhappy if I had to reinstall windows13:49
Waffl3xlike I was saying before, how do I do this?13:49
Waffl3xI click change, and put in how much the partition is minus 25 gb right?13:50
lordievaderIt should not, but these kinds of operations are not risk free, hence you should allways make a backup before you start the procedure.13:50
Waffl3xgood enough for me13:51
Waffl3xso same question13:51
Waffl3xhit change, put in the partition minus 25 gb right?13:52
lordievaderWaffl3x: If 25Gb is all you need, yes.13:52
Waffl3xI was told to do 25 gb's13:53
Waffl3xfor 1 partition13:53
Waffl3xwhat do you think?13:53
lordievaderWaffl3x: I don't know your requirements.13:54
Waffl3xalso, I get a message, "write previous changes to disk and continue?" "before you can select a new partition size, any previous changes have to be written to disk." "you cannot undo this operation"13:54
Waffl3xlordievader: im going to be using linux for programming, and just trying it out in general13:54
Waffl3xmost of my stuff is going to stay on the windows side13:54
lordievaderWaffl3x: Personally, for a desktop I'd say you want more than 25 Gb.13:54
Waffl3xstuff = work13:54
Waffl3xI have 200 gb of free space13:55
Waffl3xon the 1 harddrive13:55
Waffl3xI was told to do 25 - 0 for /13:55
Waffl3xand something else for /home13:55
Waffl3xand tell me about this message I described word for word13:56
Waffl3xwhat does it mean13:56
Waffl3xsorry for going a mile a minute13:56
lordievaderWaffl3x: So you want to resize the existing partition with more than 25Gb.13:56
lordievaderWaffl3x: How much will your entire Linux install consume?13:56
Waffl3xim not sure13:57
Waffl3xI was told by someone else to just partition 100 gb and put everything in that13:57
lordievaderHow large do you want /?13:57
Waffl3xlike I said, just going to be using it for programming13:58
Waffl3xnot really much else13:58
Waffl3xI dont even know why im getting it, aperantly its 10 times better for programming13:58
Waffl3xso I need very minimal space13:58
hateballheh13:58
hateballI've got 20GB assigned to /, rest to /home13:58
lordievaderLet's go with 20Gb indeed. Waffl3x how large do you want /home (your personal files)?13:59
Waffl3xwill all the program stuff go there?13:59
Waffl3xor can I put programs in another harddrive14:00
lordievaderWaffl3x: The system programs go to /. The programs you write yourself likely will go to /home/<somewhere>14:01
Waffl3xcould14:01
hateballAnd since this is not $some_other_os, whatever IDE you pick won't take up 20GB all by itself14:01
Waffl3xwait what?14:02
hateballAnyhow, partitions can always be resized later on if needed14:02
Waffl3xI guess ill make home 50 gb14:02
Waffl3xand to keep things clean swap can be 5 gb's14:03
Waffl3xnow tell me about the message I talked about before14:03
Waffl3x"write previous changes to disk and continue?" "before you can select a new partition size, any previous changes have to be written to disk." "you cannot undo this operation"14:03
lordievaderWaffl3x: Cancel your current changes and resize the current partitions to make way for 75Gb of free space.14:04
Waffl3xI haven't made any changes yet14:05
lordievaderUnapplied changes...14:05
Waffl3xno I literally made no changes yet14:06
Waffl3xif I try to make changes I get that message14:06
Waffl3xso I didnt do anything14:06
lordievaderThat message comes from unapplied changes...14:07
Waffl3xok I resized14:07
Waffl3xbut I got the message again14:07
Waffl3xshould I just continue or is it actually something important14:07
lordievaderWaffl3x: Depends on what is triggering it...14:07
Waffl3xwhen I click change14:08
Waffl3xI change the size to 425104 mb14:08
Waffl3xfrom 500104 mb14:08
lordievader?14:08
Waffl3x(500104 mb - 75000 mb)14:08
Waffl3xis that not how im supposed to do it?14:08
lordievaderNevermind... Missed a 0...14:09
Waffl3xso im fine then? click continue?14:09
lordievaderSuppose so, you've made a backup ;)14:10
Waffl3xseems it worked14:14
Waffl3xwalk me through this14:15
Waffl3xtheres a lot of things I dont understand here14:15
Waffl3xuse as ext4 right?14:15
Waffl3xlocation should be beginning or end14:15
Waffl3xprimary or logical partition14:15
Waffl3xmount point is / for the 20 gb partition right?14:16
WereCatfHow do I disable something called powerdevil? I'm getting totally insane memoryleak in kded4 (~10GB RAM usage!) and a Google-search appears to say it's due to powerdevil14:16
lordievaderWaffl3x: For the first partition (/) use ext4, leave start and stop point as is, change size to 20Gb. And set the mount point to /14:17
lordievaderWaffl3x: For /home, also use ext4, change to size to 50Gb and set the mountpoint to /home14:18
lordievaderWaffl3x: For swap set the type to swap and the size to whatever is left.14:18
Waffl3xleave start and stop point as is?14:18
lordievaderWaffl3x: Yes, let ubiquity figure that out.14:20
Waffl3xlordievader: theres nothing on here about that though, im just curious as the why you mentioned it14:21
lordievaderWaffl3x: It's partly from what I remember. Might've been gparted though.14:22

Waffl3xanything else I need to change?14:22
Waffl3xboot loader?14:22
Waffl3xnothing?14:22
lordievaderWaffl3x: Continue the installation.14:22
Waffl3xdo I want to format swap area?14:23
Waffl3xit didnt automatically check format for swap14:23
Waffl3xnormally I would assume no since it didnt automatically check it14:24
Waffl3xbut since you're here I might as well ask just in case :D14:24
lordievaderWaffl3x: Formatting swap is not possible.14:24
Waffl3xI wouldnt know that so :D14:24
Waffl3xthanks for the help lordievader14:28
lordievaderNo problem ;)14:28
Waffl3xmind telling me why people were twisting my arm to get this for programming?14:29
Waffl3xbesides the fact that it looks a lot better than windows14:29
lordievaderLots of it depends on personal preference.14:29
Waffl3xyeah I get that14:31
Waffl3xbut why do so many people have it as personal preference14:31
Waffl3xis it just easier layout wise to program on14:31
Waffl3xor is there software advantages aswell14:31
lordievaderWaffl3x: It's flexible I suppose.14:32
Waffl3xtheres so much I want to learn about computers14:33

jasoncollege24if you're not using a remote SSH session, what is the risk of logging into a terminal session using sudo bash?15:35
lordievaderjasoncollege24: The risk is that you are having a root shell.15:35
geniiThe usual way is sudo -i15:36
jasoncollege24i dn't understand the risk of using the root shell15:36
lordievaderLinux assumes you know what you are doing, if you want to remove something very import as root no questions are asked.15:36
lordievaderNowadays you are warned by rm that 'rm -rf /' is a bad idea. In the past it would just wipe everything, no questions asked...15:37
jasoncollege24which means the OS could get stuffed up by removing something you need as a root user15:37
geniiUp to and including everything, yes.15:38
jasoncollege24and only a non-root shell warns you about such mistaks?15:38
lordievaderNo, a non-root user doesn't have the right to do those kind of things.15:38
jasoncollege24ok i think i get it... it's kinda like the modern windows platforms that prevent the non-admins from removing, or altering critical files.15:39

jasoncollege24most of what I do seems to require it lol15:40

Can I sync all my browser settings and history with chromium as well like I do with chrome right now, etc?19:38
lordievaderblubberbop: It is very alike. Google adds a few closed source things, can't remember what they where. The internet knows that though ;)19:39

ubottupatricia_: In den meisten Ubuntu-Kanälen wird nur Englisch gesprochen. Für deutschsprachige Hilfe besuche bitte #ubuntu-de, #kubuntu-de, #edubuntu-de oder #ubuntu-at. Einfach "/join #ubuntu-de" eingeben. Danke für Dein Verständnis!19:39

kaddihi guys, since the last few days my wifi has gotten very slow and unreliable. No data is transfered even though it claims to be connected.  I'm using 14.04 and this seems to be happening since the last update I did (but I wasn't paying close attention to what was being updated unfortunately)21:33
kaddiit only happens in kubuntu, when I use windows (dualboot) on the same machine things are fine and noone else on my wifi seems affected21:34
