owen1hopefuly ubuntu will just use upstart. it's a bit confusing that there are 2 systems00:00
bekksowen1: Ubuntu is using Upstart for years now.00:01
bekksowen1: Actually there are three: SYSV, Upstart, systemd.00:01
bodhi_zazenubuntu (and debian) are  transitioning to systemd00:02
owen1bodhi_zazen: oh. thanks for that info. i'll focus my learning on systemd00:03
bodhi_zazenowen1, it will take some time to transition00:04
bekksowen1: It will take some years, actually.00:05

owen1bekks: so how come is see + sign next to a few services (service --status-all)00:07
owen1and is this the way to list all the upstart services - initctl list ?00:08

limpchi, im trying to figure out this frequency scaling issue im having.  I cant seem to reliably set the governor - it seems stuck in 'ondemand', no matter what i set it to, and my scaling options seem limited to only 800mhz or the full 3ghz.  i have a phenom II x600:13
daftykinslimpc: and what power states is yours meant to offer?00:15

clumsy_botdominic_: If you want to remove that specific game, you're going to have to login to Steam and remove it from there.00:17
AlexQEriC^^: I came back and there was the boot options menu. Does that mean the MFT was found or not xD?00:18
AlexQyeah, can always check the log out. I'll write for now00:18

daftykinslimpc: right so how many states does it support? i.e. intermediary clock states00:20

limpccpufreq-indicator00:25
daftykinshmm00:27
daftykinslimpc: in fairness if the load is high enough it'll only want to go into the max state. but one school of thought is that it makes sense to go to the highest clock all the time as it means returning to idle quicker00:27
daftykinsdepends what you're trying to achieve00:27
clumsy_botRecommendation for the power savings is to use the ondemand governor.00:28

OerHeks"it has survived on other drives" ?00:35
AlexQOerHeks: Yeah, the NTFS Win7 one (C:) and that recovery drive00:35
bodhi_zazendaftykins, I am afraid "virus" means "malware" to many users and the term is used most indiscriminately00:36
OerHeksThat would be at the beginning of your drive, you missed a part at the end.00:36

IPhotonso I am going to burn the ubuntu 14. But I still need to partition this SSD, can I do it from Windows itself or do I need another CD for gparted?01:03
OerHeksriken, easiest way would be pasting "lshw" "lspci" and "lscpu", not sure why you want to submit that01:03
OerHeksIPhoton, let windows diskmanagment make the free space, and a cd is too small for the ubuntu iso, so you need the mini iso and internet. else an usbstick of 1 gb will do01:05
OerHeks!mini01:05
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). Surendilfuse have some issues, at least with my phone06:57
CrazyM4nSurendil: How do I do that? Sorry for the late response, was doing things06:58
CrazyM4nRestarting the config to flush the input, that is06:58
Surendili used to work with fedora, fuse didn't work at all, other choice was 'jmtpfs'06:59
Surendiland usb debugging, plug it right away, and run jmtpfs07:00

CrazyM4nSo what should I do about xdotools temporarily disabling input to my system?07:03
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: sounds like some of the gui that I wrote ha ha07:04
CrazyM4nOh gosh, lol07:04
CrazyM4nAll I want is a macro to say ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) :(07:04
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: if I recall my apps only killed input or updates to my app not the entire system07:04
CrazyM4nWait! It doesn't kill the input to the whole system! It just seems to stop responding to left clicks specifically07:05
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: does your system only have a single core?07:05
CrazyM4nI'm on 4 cores07:06
CrazyM4nAnd it affects right clicks also07:06
CrazyM4nSo just the clicky buttons on the mouse it breaks07:06
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: wow well my apps didn't use right click so not sure how that is posible07:06
CrazyM4nHm, is there some sort of log for xdotools anywhere?07:07
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: I"m guessing the app is writen in python or ruby not in c or c++07:07
CrazyM4nAs far as I know xdotools is written in C07:08
CrazyM4nhttps://github.com/jordansissel/xdotool Yep, it's C07:08
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: oh it simulates keyboard input so that explains it07:09
CrazyM4nBut it doesn't break all the input, it only temporarily disables left- and right-clicking... which is possibly the most confusing part07:09
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: I've used other tools like it if not this one to automate functions of some things long ago07:09
smuzshdoes ubuntu support extended scancode set 3 over din?07:09
smuzsh(assuming the bios doesnt flip out)07:10
CrazyM4nThere's xte, there's xvkbd07:10
CrazyM4nNeither of those support unicode, which I need07:10
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: presenlty and in fact maybe even back then I use wmctrl -r 'Google - Mozilla Firefox' -b remove,maximized_vert07:11
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: to automate browser activity to scrape stuff I had a different tool07:12
CrazyM4nAs far as I know, wmctrl works with the windows spefically, not with input07:13
CrazyM4nMaybe I should submit a bug report07:13
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: yes I recall I think I used wmctrl to get focus and in very rare conditions used another tool to do keystorkes07:13
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: but what app is are you trying to put keystroke in?07:15
helmut_hi07:15
Surendilhi helmut_07:16
CrazyM4nOk, so I accidentally closed lxterm, but I found out that it only breaks mouse clicks when you are using unicode input07:16
CrazyM4nYep, definately breaks when you give it unicode to type07:17
CrazyM4nWait, no, it's working completely fine now07:18
CrazyM4nWhat?07:18
CrazyM4nNever mind, it works on some windows and doesn't work on others07:18
clumsy_botI'm looking for nice GTK3 themes besides Adwaita, Numix and Moka. Any suggestions?07:19
Tim_Milleri'm going to try to install ubuntu again, i just got the maroon flash screen, now there is a cursor flashing07:21
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: but what app is are you trying to put keystroke in?  oh ok now it work cool07:21
CrazyM4nOkay, after a bit more testing, I have found the exact problem. If you type a unicode string with xdotool, it will disallow all left and right clicking for a time proportional to how long it typed, and will disable keyboard commands related to switching windows07:21
CrazyM4n(it didn't actually start working, false alarm)07:21
Tim_Milleri now have the ubuntu logo with the dots turning from white to red07:21
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: if I recall I even added delays in my automated keystroke stuf and it was still unstable07:22
CrazyM4nThat's not my problem, I just had to increase the delays in order to compensate for lag07:23
Tim_Millernow there is the logo with a solid 5 red dots under it07:23
Tim_Milleri got a mouse pointer on the screen now07:24
Tim_Millerscreen is now grey with a white bar across the top07:24
Tim_Millerhey, it seems to be working now07:25
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: but I think this is what you use to automate browsers with fantastic tools to make it easy and stable http://www.seleniumhq.org/07:25
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: it's been years since I've used it but07:26
CrazyM4nIt's not a browser I'm trying to automate, and I'm already familiar with selenium07:26
CrazyM4nI prefer watir for browser automation, just as a side note07:26
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: like I asked before automate what?07:26
CrazyM4nI'm trying to make a macro07:26
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: yes I 've use watir and I thought salinum was just it's new name07:27
CrazyM4nAs in, have a button that automatically types text into whatever is selected07:27
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: cool I see watir is still active,  I just don't use it anymoe07:29
CrazyM4nUgh, I can do a dirty workaround07:30
CrazyM4nI can just put stuff in xclip07:31
CrazyM4nthen have xdotool middle click07:31
CrazyM4nthen clear the xclip buffer07:31
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: ya I had to do things like that just to get a single carige return at times07:31
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: also had to do checks to see if it completed and if it failed have it repeat the whole thing as it failed about ever 10th time07:32
CrazyM4nhaha yeah07:32
CrazyM4nI'm going back to my nice pure world of Haskell, thank you very much07:33
CrazyM4n:P07:33
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: but that's in an envirment were there are no people so time was not a big concern07:33

CrazyM4nHow would I get "test" inside the script?07:45

CrazyM4nI meant this http://how-to.wikia.com/wiki/How_to_read_command_line_arguments_in_a_bash_script07:47
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: yup07:47
CrazyM4nI should automate this whole process and make it into a single command line or something07:48
CrazyM4n*command07:49
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: ya if I can automate with command line, that's the method I try to use.  only use gui methods if I have to07:49
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: if you come from windows you might think everything must be done in gui07:50
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: as why I asked what application you are attempting to automate but failed to get the answer so can't fully help you07:51
CrazyM4nsacarlson: I did come from windows, but I understand that from a functional standpoint, most things can be done from command line07:51
CrazyM4nBut I just want these key commands to be sent to the X server and it's proving to be a lot more of a pain than it should be07:51
CrazyM4nIt's not any specific application07:52
sacarlsonCrazyM4n: I have in the past been focused on doing something a certain way but others open up much easier path when I fill them in on the real task at hand07:53

CrazyM4nkaypot: I don't actually know apache :c09:01
CrazyM4nSorry09:01
kaypoter wrong line, one moment, i figured it out09:01
kaypoti just wanted to share, it has nothing to do with apache09:01
sacarlsonkaypot: that's ok you can live with that error.  try in a browser  localhost09:02
kaypotdarn i thought i /ignored you09:02
k1lCrazyM4n, elementary is , like other unofficial spinoffs, not supported in here. so if you are interessted in it ask their community09:02
kaypotanyway, i accidentally camel-cased the name of the document root folder so it was looking for a nonexistant folder09:02
kaypotit was not remotely related to apache09:03

kaypothave got to admit thats pretty funny09:06
brookhow to stop sshd service on ubuntu? I have started it, but do not know how to stop it.09:06
Ben64CrazyM4n: their website, their irc channel, or google should be able to answer that for you09:06
Ben64brook: sudo service ssh stop09:07
k1lbrook, sudo service ssh stop09:07
vitimitiCrazyM4n, it's supposed to be based on Ubuntu, but they've changed a lot of things, so you'd be better informed in their sites09:07
CrazyM4nTheir website doesn't have much other than a bunch of buzzwords09:08
vitimitiCrazyM4n, welcome to elementary09:08
brookyes, it works. thanks, Ben64 and k1l.09:08
CrazyM4nHaha09:08
peyamhi09:09
peyamanybody knows how to make two plank docks. I have dual screen09:09
vitimitiCrazyM4n, I've used it a lot, it's based on Ubuntu and pantheon (DE) on gnome3.09:10
=== Stu|[A] is now known as Stu|
CrazyM4nThat actually sounds quite nice09:11
vitimitiCrazyM4n, not for developers: you are told how the app should work and look and what words to use. For instance, "if you need a splashcreen, you are doing it wrong". So if I need a download, for example, I'm being stupid09:13
CrazyM4nSo it just has a strict style guide?09:14
CrazyM4nLike OSX?09:14
vitimitiCrazyM4n, yes, they deny it, but it's a try to make Linux more OSX09:14
CrazyM4nTo each their own I guess09:15
vitimitiYeah09:15
k1lCrazyM4n, again: ask their community or ##linux. we focus on ubuntu support in here09:15

ontoHi! I am trying to connect to a bluetooth module (HC-06 connected to an arduino) via the bluecove java library (using bluez in the backend) but the module is not found. I can see it using my phone but it doesn't appear on the laptop (I'm using a bluetooth usb dongle). The phone is detected on the computer.09:36
ontoThe bluetooth module is detected on my phone, does anyone know what the problem could be?09:36
sacarlsononto: cool I never tried hooking my arduino to ubuntu/ linux.  I was going to get the cheap $10 part to add it but never did. wonder how easy that's going to be for you09:38
ontosacarlson: I'm running out of patience ... and my hair's getting thinner :p09:40
sacarlsononto: ha ha ok send me the part and I'll try it on my ardupilot for my remote plane09:41
ontosacarlson: what do you mean by the part?09:48
trinodeis there an IRC room for support with utopic? the upgrade process from 14.04, and a direct disc install renders the system unbootable, UEFI boot manager says it's corrupted09:49
sacarlsononto: I mean the bluetooth part that I don't have.  I'm looking at this article and it would seem amost all that is needed to see the bluetooth on the computer side is 5vdc.  all it is is serial out to arduino http://www.instructables.com/id/how-to-Control-arduino-by-bluetooth-from-PC-pock/step4/connecting-over-bluetooth-on-the-PC/09:50

trinodegeirha: thanks09:50
sacarlsononto: I don't see the device name in the software that he installs.  so you can't see it from any other computer or phone?09:51
ontosacarlson: I can see it on my phone, but not on my laptop09:52
sacarlsononto: oh ok so you do know it's on the ubuntu side or maybe in the laptop tongle then09:53
ontosacarlson: I can see my phone from my computer too09:53
sacarlsononto: ok did you try it closer?  I've had bluetooth that can only barely go 2 feet09:53
ontosacarlson: The module is right next to me less than a feet09:55
sacarlsononto: oh and I have been seeing people here complaining about bluetooth problems here but if the phone works?  can you try windows?09:55
ontosacarlson: I could, but since I haven't booted into windows for months, I'm afraid I'll be stuck in an upgrade loop09:56
sacarlsononto: ha ha just unplug the internet when you boot windows09:56
g0uZ_have someone a working "getfattr" sample command that work ?09:56
ontosacarlson: ok, I'll try09:57

EriC^^threecatstwodogs: great :)14:24
MonkeyDustsacarlson1  yes, just found it14:24
k1lASHER1: as in the HOWTO: "Install the following packages:    python (must be at least 2.5)."  ubuntu 14.04 ships python 2.7.514:24
k1lASHER1: so the issue is your python mess, and not ubuntu14:24
MonkeyDustFuXXz  there's also #ubuntu-server14:25
FuXXzah ok, maybe iam wrong here :) but the tip with single user is usefull :) i will ask there but many thanks for your time14:25
sacarlson1MonkeyDust: FuXXz: as far as I'm concerned it's out of our hands if you can't boot and control the ubuntu server and plesk is the only tool to fix it then you should be getting advice on how to use plesk14:26

francesco2EriC^^: what can i doc?14:28
francesco2do*14:28
EriC^^well first let's be sure of what happened14:28
EriC^^if the permissions are all screwed up in "/" then you have to backup and fresh install, i guess14:29
MonkeyDustfrancesco2  golden rule: always make sure you have a backup14:30
k1lASHER1: so is there a reason you dont use the original ubuntu python?14:30
Gunner76thok so I reall hope someone here is able to help me figure out what is going on. Last night I installed Java 7 folling the instructions found on this page http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Oracle-Java-on-Ubuntu-Linux After a reboot my computer is unable to perform apt-get as it responds back with "Failed to fetch"14:30
Gunner76thI am able to ping 8.8.8.8 however if I try to ping us.archive.ubuntu.com it responds with unknown host. If I try the same ping command from my windows computer, it responds back as expected with decent ping times14:30
EriC^^francesco2: it's ok, your personal files won't be affected, most likely, you'll have to get a list of your installed packages, and back up your /home/<user>, ( or others too ) and then fresh install14:31
EriC^^francesco2: backups are of course very important as well, but you'll get the system back as it is14:32
francesco2I see thank you :))14:32
sacarlson1k1| ASHER1 I think he's not really running ubuntu he's just trying to fix his problem by making us think he has ubuntu installed and that is why he can't provide the paistbins you requested14:33
sacarlson1k1| ASHER1  the returned numbers don't match ubuntu 14.04 so he could not have followed the instructions he pointed to14:34
EriC^^francesco2: no problem14:34
a7phi everyone14:34
k1lsacarlson1: yes. the last pastebin shows a manual install of python and twisted. and that is making issues. but ASHER1 is not listening at all but repeating his question over and over again since days/weeks14:35
a7pI need to modify the limit of allowed file descriptors in a running process - older versions of ubuntu don't ship with versions of linux-util new enough to do that (eventhough the kernel is capable of doing it - is there any way to archive it another way?)14:36
francesco2I don't understand if it is a read-only file system why using sudo I cannot change it to 775 or 777?14:37
francesco2should be a way to roll it back14:37
reisiofrancesco2: chmod involves writing14:38
EriC^^francesco2: i'm still not sure what's happened14:39
EriC^^francesco2: you're booted into tty1 right now?14:39
sacarlson1francesco2: EriC^^ it seems that at least his /home or parts of it might be a partition that is mounted read only.  we could check to see how things are persently mounted on your system with the command mount14:41
EriC^^sacarlson1: i checked, /home isn't seperate, and "/" is mounted as rw14:41
EriC^^he says he has no other partitions14:41
EriC^^francesco2: please type ls -ld /var/lib/sudo14:42
EriC^^and paste here14:42
francesco2ok I try :)14:42
sacarlson1EriC^^: oh ok then I don't understand why he can't change permitions then.  are the partitions maybe fat32 or non perm type14:42
EriC^^sacarlson1: nope ext4 i think14:43
EriC^^he said he issued a command involving chmod 66614:43
francesco2drwx------- 3 root 4096 kwi 23 12:03 /var/lib/sudo14:43
EriC^^francesco2: ok, looks like the permissions for that directory is correct14:44
sacarlson1EriC^^: yes I saw that part but where did he do the chmod and was it recusive14:44
EriC^^so you didn't issue a chmod 666 to "/" i think?14:44
francesco2I remember that after typing it, he says I wanted to change the ownership of all my files to me14:44

pwksacarlson1: yes of course, this is how it is able to find the packages I requested17:31
sacarlson1pwk: well I don't understand why it has unmet deps17:32
pwkthe problem is simply that the packages of the version i need (1.7.17) have a dependency to a gphoto library that is no longer present17:32

daftykinsperhaps if you want to run older software you should do so on precise (v12.04)17:33

ki7rwdaftykins: yep - i'd have to get a new processor and memory for the new mobo17:42

daftykinsbut yeah blaming a motherboard for slow boot is totally wrong17:42

ki7rwthis problem occurs on all my desktops and laptops17:44
daftykinsbut also, getting an SSD is a far more sensible choice than building an entire new Haswell-E system17:44
daftykinsare you doing something odd like keeping the same /home between all of them, or something?17:45
ki7rwwhat's odd about keeping /home? it would be a lot of work to backup /home and then restore after a clean upgrade17:46

Flanneljussa5: So, the reason it's not updated in 14.10, is because the debian packager didn't update the package until mid-august, which is past the import freeze for Ubuntu 14.10 (at this point, it still could've been in 14.10, if someone requested the version bump).22:23
Flanneljussa5: It never would've been in 14.04, because it was released as everything was freezing in 14.04.  It would've been in 14.10 had it been updated (by the maintainer) a week or two earlier.22:24

Flanneljussa5: For instance, had you filed a bug about this, in August, it could've been updated for 14.10. (This isn't your fault, it's just a statement)22:31
k1l_jussa5: there are no verison updates for most packages while the ubuntu version is released. its not a rolling release22:31
k1l_kailas: i dont think there is much difference between most distros.22:33
jpds!sru | jussa522:34
ubottujussa5: Stable Release Update information is at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates22:34
kailask1l_: Ok, so I guess I can stick with whichever is the easiest to find....Thanks22:34
k1l_kailas: well, ubuntu uses upstart until around 16.04. but this doesnt matter that much, imho in such a diagram22:35
jussa5OK thanks everybody. Bed-time here in Italy :)22:36

joshumaxOh wait I'm not22:59
kailasIs it correct for me to say that something like Debian or Slackware or Gentoo is much more bare bones than Ubuntu. Needless to say they are more difficut to work with, but that difficulty arises because of the fact that we have to choose almost all applications to put on them23:00
benzhninja##ms-office23:01
k1l_kailas: you can install a minimal ubuntu. the target-group is the difference. but that is more a topic for ##linux23:01

farvaSo I have a second server I want to transfer onto a single server machine and I am curios about the load distribution. Both servers use up about 1.0 load avg, do I have to specify the processor I want to run the second server machine on? Or will the load avg be okay since they are on different cores?23:07
NeldogzDoes anyone know if it is possible to burn a cd to iso in Brasero? Looks like the option to burn to iso is missing, only toc and cue exist.23:07
k1l_Neldogz: so you want to rip a cd?23:07
