gQuigsthinking about posting my survey to the lubuntu users list (https://bryanquigley.com/crazy-ideas/still-running-32-bit-ubuntu)  about removing 32 bit images..15:36
gQuigsis that the right thing to do?   (then also post to xubuntu, as they are the two most likely to be used on older hardware, afaict)15:36
testdrgQuigs: you have to stick to LTS-14.04 and this will be then up to around 2020. You only need a newer Ubunut for new hardware and crazy software, that will not be available for older versions.15:41
holsteinits challenging.. technology will move forward, and the linux kernel cant keep legacy support rolled in forever..15:42
testdrthis does not say it is not impossible - but it says it is time-consuming and may be useless, if there is hardly a usage of those backports.15:44
holsteinno one will ever prevent anyone from using linux on a 32bit system.. but, the default iso's may not be maintained by default forever15:44
holsteinone could always maintain a community port.. like the PPC is now15:44
gQuigs:) I'm just asking if you think it makes sense to post on the -users list.. of if that's out of scope to ask people to do a survey who are subscribed15:47
gQuigshmm.. I didn't think of that.. I guess Lubuntu could keep 32 bit images going as a port...15:49
holsteinwell, *anyone* can keep whatever images they like going in wahtever capacity they choose15:51
holsteinthats the nice thing about open software..15:51
phillwgQuigs: a little hint... I am the guy who spins non-PAE kernel (with a lot of help). we will still be here for the 32 bit people come 2021, which is when 16.04 runs out.16:34
gQuigsphillw: awesome :)16:40
elultimotellezhi someone can help me to run kiwix in lubuntu?17:29
wxl!kiwix17:30
wxlno clue what that is17:30
elultimotellezis the client for the wikipedia offline17:30
wxlelultimotellez: you have to build it from source17:31
wxlelultimotellez: here's what you need to do essentially: unzip it and then http://www.kiwix.org/wiki/Compilation17:32
elultimotellezmmm, the program include the excute field kiwix for linux, but a try your link thanks17:33
elultimotellezthanks bye17:35
diffisHello! A question about lubuntu desktop: If I wish to hide menu entries (e.g. guvcview under Sound & Video), how can I actually do that? Some sources advice to edit or remove the corresponding .desktop files. But I'm a bit wondering, how this editing/removing can be done wisely?18:10
ianorlindiffis: I think you should maybe keep a backup copy of the old desktop files around18:27
ianorlinthen you can move them back if you break anything18:27
ianorlinalso editing them for your user in your home folder will be good so you don't break it for other users if any18:27
=== zz_RedDeath is now known as RedDeath
diffisianorlin:  Yes, a backup is definitely good point - and also planned. xD18:28
=== RedDeath is now known as Guest61563
diffisianorlin:  But I can simply remove those that I consider 'unneeded'?18:29
ianorlinthing is removing them will take them out of your system18:33
ianorlinyou can get a version of guvcview in ~/.local/share/applications/guvcview.desktop and then add noshowin line to it have it not show on menu and yet if something happens and a nother user ends up on your comp you can still use guvcview18:35
ianorlinon that other user without cluttering up your menu18:35
ianorlinremoving it will work but getting it back will be the hard part if things change and you want to use a webcam18:36
diffisianorlin:  A noshowing line? What's that? I haven't seen any examples for that...18:37
ianorlinso you can add NOTSHOWIN=LXDE to your file for guvcview18:38
ianorlinit makes it not show in LXDE18:38
diffisCool!18:39
ianorlinand if it is in your home folder you won't have family move in that want to use their webcam and not be able to18:40
diffisThank you. I was searching something like this, but I couldn't find anything related to it... So thought, it doesn't exist... :D18:40
diffisPerhaps I can now edit the menu - once I have time to do that. Thank you again. ^^18:41
garbonzohi all... will lxqt be a good or a bad thing for people using old/slow systems?21:38
wxlshould be good21:38
wxlthat's always our goal is to best support old/slow machines21:39
garbonzoread that it's going to be in Lubuntu soon... does that sound right?21:39
ianorlinyes but not relase in two days but hopefully one after21:39
wxlit's NOT going to be in 14.10. it MAY be in 15.04.21:39
garbonzoexcellent.21:39
wxlthere is nothing certain yet21:39
wxlthere's a lot of work to do and i'm not certain we can get it done in 6 months21:39
ianorlinyes it certainly is lots of work21:39
garbonzoof course -- forgot that Ubuntu had a new release, so have to update my lubuntu!21:40
wxlbut the gtk parts of lxde are starting to slow in development21:40
wxlso at some point i imagine we will HAVE to make the switch21:40
wxlthe new release is in 2 days21:40
garbonzolooking forward to it21:40
wxlwe're doing the last minute prep21:40
wxlmainly for lubuntu it was a bug fix release21:40
wxlso we have a "clean slate" to work on qt from21:41
garbonzoit saved an old toughbook I inherited from the scrapheap...21:41
wxlneat :)21:41
wxlit's saved many an old machine for me21:41
garbonzowas nearly unusable in XP and, well, doesn't fly along in lubuntu but it's perfectly usable.21:41
garbonzoplus, if anyone tries to take it off me i just wallop 'em with the metal case :-)21:42
wxlhahha21:42
wxlglad you're enjoying it :)21:42
wxlare you already a member of the mailing list?21:42
garbonzoscored a lot of street cred points at the hackspace :-)21:42
garbonzono, not yet21:42
wxloh you should join21:42
garbonzoguess i should be21:42
wxland there's always ways to help should you ever want to contribute21:43
wxlwe've got jobs for everyone :)21:43
garbonzoi'm not a programmer though21:43
wxldon't need to be21:43
wxldon't even need to be technically proficient! :)21:43
garbonzocan write a little, do some graphics, play kazoo...21:43
wxlwell the wiki and communications teams always need help21:44
wxlso that writing/organizational skill can be of help21:44
wxland of course there's always artwork/graphics, so you'd be welcome there21:44
wxleven testing doesnt' require much skill21:44
garbonzoif it's something i can do spare time, then perhaps. have some commitments with kid-care and studying for my intro linux certs...21:44
garbonzotesting is good too21:44
wxlneat!21:44
wxlyeah all of this stuff is volunteer based21:45
wxlso you contribute as much as you can21:45
garbonzosounds interesting21:45
ianorlinalso for that bug in the evince with not being able to change zoom should I mail the main ubuntu-quality list about the bug as it effect many flavors21:45
silverliongarbonzo : testing would be the most important thing ;)21:45
wxldespite being release manager and head of qa (and trying really hard to continue to support ppc chips), i have a full time job, a 12 year old who's involved in a ton of activities, a wife with medical needs, and a house that is constantly in need of stuff21:46
wxlianorlin: yes please21:46
garbonzoi can blow stuff up with the best of them21:46
wxlgarbonzo: testing is actually not that exciting XD21:46
silverlionneither is communications ;)21:46
wxlhahhahaa21:46
wxlcheck out https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/GettingInvolved garbonzo21:47
garbonzotell me about it. have been doing comms work for ~25 years and it drives me nuts...21:47
garbonzoyes, i will21:47
garbonzook, bookmarked21:47
wxlif you need help knowing who to talk to about any particular interest of yours, let me know21:47
garbonzowill do21:47
wxland if you want to help with testing, let me know and i'll give you the run down :)21:47
silverliongarbonzo : ~10 now for me21:47
garbonzoprobably better to read up on what the various teams want and then get back to you21:47
wxlsounds like a good plan21:48
garbonzoin principle, anything that drives devs nuts has to be a good place to start :-)21:48
wxlhahaha21:49
silverliongarbonzo : then you would be a great asset for my team as I have the extreme pleasure driving wxl nuts with stupid questions :D21:49
garbonzoi salute you21:49
silverlion???21:50
silverlionis it strange that I like that position?21:51
wxlno :)21:51
garbonzoanyone who drives devs crazy gets my vote! there's nothing to beat that little look of despair as i stick my head 'round their cubicle door and say 'oh, just one more thing if you have a moment...' :-)21:51
wxlgarbonzo: that's what bug reports are for :)21:52
wxldevs usually ignore everything else XD21:52
silverlionwxl : don't you dare ignoring me :P21:52
silverlionyou know my magic of words don't you?21:52
garbonzolol!21:52
wxlwhat, me, ignore you? naaawww :)21:53
garbonzowhile i remember, is there any good way to map the 'windows' (super??) key to the main menu?21:54
wxlyeah hold on21:55
garbonzoplease no suggestions involving resoldering :-)21:55
ianorlinsticker21:56
garbonzos'cheating...21:56
wxlgarbonzo: use Super_R or Super_L for your key in ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml21:57
garbonzothanks. i'll give that a go21:57
garbonzowill read up on the volunteer opportunities and get back to you. see you around!22:01
wxlsee ya22:01
garbonzobye22:01
samineruHi there, my /home partition is on a RAID drive, and was unexpectedly unavailable at first boot after install. I wasn't able to log in as a normal user, and can't seem to elevate to sudo from the guest account. How do I setup raid at boot?22:47
ianorlinwhen you say login as a normal user do you mean in lightdm or in a tty or both?22:51
samineruianorlin: I mean within lightdm, tty login is fine, so ignore that detail, sorry23:10
ianorlinbecause you could sudo with your normal user on lightdm but I personally don't know how to get raid working23:15
ianorlinI have never used raid myself23:16
