[00:24] :) [15:36] thinking about posting my survey to the lubuntu users list (https://bryanquigley.com/crazy-ideas/still-running-32-bit-ubuntu) about removing 32 bit images.. [15:36] is that the right thing to do? (then also post to xubuntu, as they are the two most likely to be used on older hardware, afaict) [15:41] gQuigs: you have to stick to LTS-14.04 and this will be then up to around 2020. You only need a newer Ubunut for new hardware and crazy software, that will not be available for older versions. [15:42] its challenging.. technology will move forward, and the linux kernel cant keep legacy support rolled in forever.. [15:44] this does not say it is not impossible - but it says it is time-consuming and may be useless, if there is hardly a usage of those backports. [15:44] no one will ever prevent anyone from using linux on a 32bit system.. but, the default iso's may not be maintained by default forever [15:44] one could always maintain a community port.. like the PPC is now [15:47] :) I'm just asking if you think it makes sense to post on the -users list.. of if that's out of scope to ask people to do a survey who are subscribed [15:49] hmm.. I didn't think of that.. I guess Lubuntu could keep 32 bit images going as a port... [15:51] well, *anyone* can keep whatever images they like going in wahtever capacity they choose [15:51] thats the nice thing about open software.. [16:34] gQuigs: a little hint... I am the guy who spins non-PAE kernel (with a lot of help). we will still be here for the 32 bit people come 2021, which is when 16.04 runs out. [16:40] phillw: awesome :) [17:29] hi someone can help me to run kiwix in lubuntu? [17:30] !kiwix [17:30] no clue what that is [17:30] is the client for the wikipedia offline [17:31] elultimotellez: you have to build it from source [17:32] elultimotellez: here's what you need to do essentially: unzip it and then http://www.kiwix.org/wiki/Compilation [17:33] mmm, the program include the excute field kiwix for linux, but a try your link thanks [17:35] thanks bye [18:10] Hello! A question about lubuntu desktop: If I wish to hide menu entries (e.g. guvcview under Sound & Video), how can I actually do that? Some sources advice to edit or remove the corresponding .desktop files. But I'm a bit wondering, how this editing/removing can be done wisely? [18:27] diffis: I think you should maybe keep a backup copy of the old desktop files around [18:27] then you can move them back if you break anything [18:27] also editing them for your user in your home folder will be good so you don't break it for other users if any === zz_RedDeath is now known as RedDeath [18:28] ianorlin: Yes, a backup is definitely good point - and also planned. xD === RedDeath is now known as Guest61563 [18:29] ianorlin: But I can simply remove those that I consider 'unneeded'? [18:33] thing is removing them will take them out of your system [18:35] you can get a version of guvcview in ~/.local/share/applications/guvcview.desktop and then add noshowin line to it have it not show on menu and yet if something happens and a nother user ends up on your comp you can still use guvcview [18:35] on that other user without cluttering up your menu [18:36] removing it will work but getting it back will be the hard part if things change and you want to use a webcam [18:37] ianorlin: A noshowing line? What's that? I haven't seen any examples for that... [18:38] so you can add NOTSHOWIN=LXDE to your file for guvcview [18:38] it makes it not show in LXDE [18:39] Cool! [18:40] and if it is in your home folder you won't have family move in that want to use their webcam and not be able to [18:40] Thank you. I was searching something like this, but I couldn't find anything related to it... So thought, it doesn't exist... :D [18:41] Perhaps I can now edit the menu - once I have time to do that. Thank you again. ^^ [21:38] hi all... will lxqt be a good or a bad thing for people using old/slow systems? [21:38] should be good [21:39] that's always our goal is to best support old/slow machines [21:39] read that it's going to be in Lubuntu soon... does that sound right? [21:39] yes but not relase in two days but hopefully one after [21:39] it's NOT going to be in 14.10. it MAY be in 15.04. [21:39] excellent. [21:39] there is nothing certain yet [21:39] there's a lot of work to do and i'm not certain we can get it done in 6 months [21:39] yes it certainly is lots of work [21:40] of course -- forgot that Ubuntu had a new release, so have to update my lubuntu! [21:40] but the gtk parts of lxde are starting to slow in development [21:40] so at some point i imagine we will HAVE to make the switch [21:40] the new release is in 2 days [21:40] looking forward to it [21:40] we're doing the last minute prep [21:40] mainly for lubuntu it was a bug fix release [21:41] so we have a "clean slate" to work on qt from [21:41] it saved an old toughbook I inherited from the scrapheap... [21:41] neat :) [21:41] it's saved many an old machine for me [21:41] was nearly unusable in XP and, well, doesn't fly along in lubuntu but it's perfectly usable. [21:42] plus, if anyone tries to take it off me i just wallop 'em with the metal case :-) [21:42] hahha [21:42] glad you're enjoying it :) [21:42] are you already a member of the mailing list? [21:42] scored a lot of street cred points at the hackspace :-) [21:42] no, not yet [21:42] oh you should join [21:42] guess i should be [21:43] and there's always ways to help should you ever want to contribute [21:43] we've got jobs for everyone :) [21:43] i'm not a programmer though [21:43] don't need to be [21:43] don't even need to be technically proficient! :) [21:43] can write a little, do some graphics, play kazoo... [21:44] well the wiki and communications teams always need help [21:44] so that writing/organizational skill can be of help [21:44] and of course there's always artwork/graphics, so you'd be welcome there [21:44] even testing doesnt' require much skill [21:44] if it's something i can do spare time, then perhaps. have some commitments with kid-care and studying for my intro linux certs... [21:44] testing is good too [21:44] neat! [21:45] yeah all of this stuff is volunteer based [21:45] so you contribute as much as you can [21:45] sounds interesting [21:45] also for that bug in the evince with not being able to change zoom should I mail the main ubuntu-quality list about the bug as it effect many flavors [21:45] garbonzo : testing would be the most important thing ;) [21:46] despite being release manager and head of qa (and trying really hard to continue to support ppc chips), i have a full time job, a 12 year old who's involved in a ton of activities, a wife with medical needs, and a house that is constantly in need of stuff [21:46] ianorlin: yes please [21:46] i can blow stuff up with the best of them [21:46] garbonzo: testing is actually not that exciting XD [21:46] neither is communications ;) [21:46] hahhahaa [21:47] check out https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Lubuntu/GettingInvolved garbonzo [21:47] tell me about it. have been doing comms work for ~25 years and it drives me nuts... [21:47] yes, i will [21:47] ok, bookmarked [21:47] if you need help knowing who to talk to about any particular interest of yours, let me know [21:47] will do [21:47] and if you want to help with testing, let me know and i'll give you the run down :) [21:47] garbonzo : ~10 now for me [21:47] probably better to read up on what the various teams want and then get back to you [21:48] sounds like a good plan [21:48] in principle, anything that drives devs nuts has to be a good place to start :-) [21:49] hahaha [21:49] garbonzo : then you would be a great asset for my team as I have the extreme pleasure driving wxl nuts with stupid questions :D [21:49] i salute you [21:50] ??? [21:51] is it strange that I like that position? [21:51] no :) [21:51] anyone who drives devs crazy gets my vote! there's nothing to beat that little look of despair as i stick my head 'round their cubicle door and say 'oh, just one more thing if you have a moment...' :-) [21:52] garbonzo: that's what bug reports are for :) [21:52] devs usually ignore everything else XD [21:52] wxl : don't you dare ignoring me :P [21:52] you know my magic of words don't you? [21:52] lol! [21:53] what, me, ignore you? naaawww :) [21:54] while i remember, is there any good way to map the 'windows' (super??) key to the main menu? [21:55] yeah hold on [21:55] please no suggestions involving resoldering :-) [21:56] sticker [21:56] s'cheating... [21:57] garbonzo: use Super_R or Super_L for your key in ~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml [21:57] thanks. i'll give that a go [22:01] will read up on the volunteer opportunities and get back to you. see you around! [22:01] see ya [22:01] bye [22:47] Hi there, my /home partition is on a RAID drive, and was unexpectedly unavailable at first boot after install. I wasn't able to log in as a normal user, and can't seem to elevate to sudo from the guest account. How do I setup raid at boot? [22:51] when you say login as a normal user do you mean in lightdm or in a tty or both? [23:10] ianorlin: I mean within lightdm, tty login is fine, so ignore that detail, sorry [23:15] because you could sudo with your normal user on lightdm but I personally don't know how to get raid working [23:16] I have never used raid myself === IdleOne is now known as Guest88208 === Guest12816 is now known as IdleOne
