XF-eris there a way to tell the indicator applet not to act as a system tray, and to instead allow the notification plugin to display systray icons?04:16
jtinforsHi, just upgraded to 14.10 here. waking up after suspending to RAM is broken. The screen is black when I open the lid. Known issue?06:52

james0ron a fresh install of xubuntu 14.01.1, can't seem to get the weather applet to pull in data10:15
brainwashjames0r: bug 137761210:15
ubottubug 1377612 in Xfce4 weather plugin "[SRU] Plugin needs updated for locationforecast-1.2" [Medium,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/137761210:15
brainwashyou can enable the -proposed repository and then download the updated package10:16
james0rbrainwash, gotcha. thanks.10:17
james0rbrainwash, just curious. why hasn't the fix hit the main ubuntu repos yet?10:18
brainwashjames0r: uhm.. no one knows, the SRU team has been pinged several times already, but the package is still stuck in -proposed :/10:19
james0rbrainwash, i see.10:20
brainwashso, hopefully today it will be finally moved :)10:20
dkesseljames0r: remember to disable -proposed afterwards ;)10:20
james0rdkessel, okay thanks. is there an apt command to just cherry pick the weather plugin package?10:22
james0rit's wanting to upgrade a lot10:22
dkesseljames0r: there probably is ;) but i don't know... i would use synaptic to just select and upgrade the single package10:23
brainwashjust reinstall the package10:23
james0reasy enough. thanks.10:24

dovahhello i installed something and now i have ubuntus indicator icons like calender in the bottom right on the bar. im in xubuntu i dont want two of them does anybody know how to get rid of the ubuntu ones or gnome ones or whatever they are12:35
dovahlike i have two clocks now lol12:35
cfhowlettdovah, right click and remove12:36
dovahit removes the whole indicator thing even the sound12:36
brainwashopen the indicator plugin settings window and hide the extra indicators12:37
dovahok let me see12:38
lord4163How do I move the Skype icon to the left, it is in the middle of the wifi and sound icon, looks very weird.12:39
brainwashopen the indicator plugin settings window and change the order of the indicators12:40
dovahyou can right click something then select move i think12:40
lord4163dovah: No you can just move the whole row12:41
dovahok i see12:41
lord4163brainwash: yea, but the wifi and skype isn't there?12:41
brainwashoh, well.. these two tray icons are managed by the application indicator12:42
brainwashand the order cannot be changed manually I think12:42
athlonhello...12:51
knomehello12:51
athlonI've a question about files...12:52
Hedgeworkathlon: Just ask it :)12:52
athlonI tried copying files with the newest xubuntu release..12:53
athlonThe copying finished I think. I copied like 30GB file from laptop to external HDD.12:53
athlonThen suddenly the xubuntu desktop hang and not responding..12:54
athlonbut the log out screen still working. So I choose to "shut down".12:55
athlonI tried to look again for the copied files in the external HDD but doesn't seem to find it?12:55
athlonis that even possible?12:56
Hedgeworkathlon: How did you try copying them?  How are you connected to the external drive?  Are there any errors in relevant logs?12:56
Hedgeworkathlon: anything's possible, we just need to get enough of the right info from you to troubleshoot :)12:56
athlonno errors i think. It finished normally..12:56
qwebirc92123Hi xubuntusers13:00

ubottuqwebirc92123: Hi!, Welcome to #xubuntu! Feel free to ask questions and help people out. The channel guidelines are at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/Guidelines. Enjoy your stay!13:00
athloni just plugged the HDD and it automatically loaded it.13:01
svein_I have a projector which I use with an HDMI cable. Xfce detects everything and I can switch between mirror/extended etc just fine. However the image which is displayed from the projector is 5-10% too small, it sort of cuts right after the menubar. Does anyone know how I can tweak this? It does not look like I can adjust it on the projector menu13:03
qwebirc92123I have an artifact on my desk ever since. but sometimes it disappears. Xubuntu is in a virtualbox guest. Here screenshot http://i.imgur.com/HRp66Yy.png Someone has already seen or heard of a similar phenomenon?13:05
Hedgeworkathlon: Okay, let's back up a bit...it seems like you are new and don't really grok what info we need to help you effectively...I'll try to explain better:13:07
Hedgeworkathlon: "How did you try copying [the files]?" == What software and what version of that software did you use, on what version of xubuntu?  Did you use Thunar, or did you 'cp' from the command line, or use rsync, or something else?  Did you do it as a regular user or as root/sudo?13:08
Hedgeworkathlon: "How are you connected to the external drive?" == Is it USB2? USB3? eSATA? Serial port? Alien telepathy?13:09
brainwashqwebirc92123: http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=790713:10
Hedgeworkathlon: Other things that I hadn't asked yet, but that might be helpful are what filesystem is on the drive, whether whatever problem you hit destroyed any other data on the drive, and how much free space the drive has.13:11
Hedgeworkathlon: That would give me a starting point to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it.13:11
qwebirc92123Ah thank you brainwash  :)13:12
qwebirc92123brainwash: I don't have jdownloader, do you know how to fix this?13:14
athlonI'm using the newest xubuntu 14.10 installed on usb.13:15
brainwashqwebirc92123: does disabling the compositor resolve the problem?13:15
brainwashqwebirc92123: also, do you use any other java application?13:16
qwebirc92123yes I use other Java app, but how to check whats app ?13:17
athlonthe hdd is plugged into USB2 port. the installed usb plugged into USB3 port..13:17
Alexfrenchhave you installed additionnals guests for virtualbox????13:17
athlonI want to know whether there is a way to know if the copied files are in the HDD or not..13:18
cfhowlettAlexfrench, all the time13:18
brainwashqwebirc92123: you have to test it and see which java app triggers the bug13:18
athlonI've tried with searching but the result shows nothing.13:20
qwebirc92123brainwash: Do I need to use this command? : xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing -t bool -s false13:20
qwebirc92123brainwash: with this, the artifact gone: xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing -t bool -s false13:21
brainwashqwebirc92123: you can use this command or navigate to settings manager > window manager tweaks > compositing (last tab)13:21
brainwashyes, like expected :)13:21
qwebirc92123brainwash: but it will back?13:22
brainwashit won't unless you re-enable compositing and launch a java app13:23
qwebirc92123brainwash: Ok, but how to fix? upgrade Java ?13:24
qwebirc92123brainwash: do you know?13:24
athlonHedgework: I want to know if there's a way to know whether the file I copied before are available on the external HDD or not.13:24
brainwashgood question, it is a bug in xfwm4 (the window manager of Xfce) which is caused by java13:25
brainwashmaybe upgrading java could help13:25
qwebirc92123Ok, I will try13:25
brainwashhowever, I doubt that13:25
Hedgeworkathlon: Well, you can mount the external drive and look where you thought the files were...13:25
athlonHedgework: ah.. I've tried with manual searching but none..13:25
Hedgeworkathlon: MOST gui tools treat communications with USB hard drives asynchronously -- i.e. they'll show as finished before they really are, and activity will continue in the background -- so without you having answered how you tried to copy, I don't know if there's a possibility that you shut down while the copy was still happening.13:26
athlonHedgework: I copied the file into a new created folder but that folder is nowhere to found13:26
brainwashqwebirc92123: I've found the bug report -> https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1097813:27
ubottubugzilla.xfce.org bug 10978 in General "Square appears on top-left corner on screen when using composite and java-app with tray icon" [Major,New]13:27
athlonHedgework: I've made sure the coppied is finished. It have those percentages showing13:27
Hedgeworkathlon: I've asked three different ways what program you used to copy...there are like 6 ways to do that WITHOUT installing any extra software from the repos.13:28
brainwashqwebirc92123: I suggest that you bookmark this bug report and try to help with fixing it13:28
athlonHedgework: I copied using thunar the normal way copy and paste13:28
athlonHedgework: would the files become missing bytes / something?13:31
qwebirc92123brainwash: Ah thanks, But it should be reported to Xubuntu too.  Where is the bugtracking of xubuntu?13:31
Hedgeworkathlon: Okay, thanks that's helpful.13:31
Hedgeworkathlon: So, the most likely case is that the copy didn't happen for some reason.  There may be a permissions problem, or not enough space on the disk, or something like that.13:31
brainwashqwebirc92123: I haven't searched yet, maybe it has not been reported on launchpad yet13:31
brainwashqwebirc92123: but it needs to be fixed upstream by the Xfce developers (or anyone else)13:32
athlonHedgework: the space is still so much 1TB.13:32
brainwashqwebirc92123: so any fix will land automatically in xubuntu at some point13:32
athlonHedgework: permission problem, I opened thunar as sudo. so... it couldn't be..13:33
qwebirc92123Ok, thanks a lot for the great help brainwash  :)13:33
brainwashqwebirc92123: you're welcome :)13:33
athlonHedgework: I've had bad experiences with copying large files into HDD.13:34
Hedgeworkathlon: working, brb13:38
athlonHedgework: ok.13:39
athloncan we check usb/hdd formatted with fat32 in linux?13:41
athlonin xubuntu? any application can do that?13:42
qwebirc92123Someone know how to reload the applet: xfce4-indicator-plugin13:53
GridCubeadd it again13:54
GridCubeto the panel13:54
GridCuberemove the old one13:54
qwebirc92123I don't my java application in it. I reloaded the panel like this: xfce4-panel -r13:55
qwebirc92123I don't see* ...13:55
Hedgeworkback13:56
athlonHedgework: I experienced it the other months where some of the files becoming missing bytes like. Can't open in thunar.13:56
Hedgeworkathlon: Yes, open the terminal and I can walk you through a couple of commands.13:56
GridCubeathlon: gparted if you want to do other taskt to the usb,13:56
Hedgeworkathlon: Keep in mind, I'm going to be in and out because I'm at work :)13:56
athlonGridcube: so we can check the usb/hdd file integrity?13:57
GridCubesure why not13:57
athlonGridcube: i thought it's not supported in linux yet?13:58
GridCubeqwebirc92123: sorry i don't know, if you re-added it and it doesnt show new tasks i don't known what else13:58
GridCubeathlon: what is not supported?13:58
athlonGridcube: fsck13:59
athlonGridcube: fsck for fat32 in linux13:59
GridCubewhy would it not be suported? its one of the oldest and most used disk formats in the world since like 20 years ago14:00
GridCubentfs, thats a diferent story14:00
athlonGridcube: oh... does it work for ntfs too? no?14:01
athlonGridcube: I have a corrupted external HDD that the files there were missing bytes or something.14:02
GridCubeif it was properly unmounted by windows it should, if it wasnt then its locked by windows and no14:03
athlonGridcube: I don't know the best option to retrieve the files from there.14:03
GridCubeathlon: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Step_By_Step14:04
athlonGridcube: I've tried in wondows but even windows can't open the corrupt folders there.14:04
GridCubeathlon: testdisk, learn it, love it14:04
athlonGridcube: would it work for 2Tera files?14:05
GridCubenever tried14:05
GridCubei don't see why not14:05
athlonGridcube: but it would take long time to finish then?14:06
GridCubeoh yes, that i t would14:07
GridCubeit would depend on the hardware tho i gues14:07
athlonGridcube: I've tried one before and it almost took like 3 days - a week to finish.. the hardware would become too hot..14:07
GridCubeif its really faulty then it can take a long long time, and the cpu and the rest of the system migh have something to say about it14:07
GridCubeexactly14:08
GridCubeif the information is really crucial for you i would sugest you to find a company that recovers the information for you14:08
athlonGridcube: even then recovered files are not having the same name anymore.14:08
athlonGridcube: back to the HDD that I said have corrupted files, I managed to open the files in Peppermint linux.14:09
GridCubeathlon: that depends on how you use the recovery program and how damaged files are, testdisk can recover data as it was14:09
GridCubeif its still there14:09
athlonGridcube: doesn't it weird? considering the same linux...14:10
GridCubenah, filesystems are weird14:11
athlonGridcube:so I was wondering why it would load the files in Peppermint linux but not in the Xubuntu/Ubuntu.14:11
GridCubeno idea14:12
athlonGridcube: the load was slow but I managed to copied all the important files in there HDD.14:13
athlonGridcube: now I would like to format the HDD but I'm worried that the problem would persist again in the future.14:13
GridCubeyou should, all drives fail14:14
athlonGridcube: too bad some files were damaged too bad that it won't load.14:15
GridCubewelp, thats life my friend14:16
athlonGridcube: now I have the same thing happened again while copying big files 30GB over to another HDD.14:16
GridCubeyou could have a faulty sata cable14:16
athlonGridcube: this time the files were missing...14:17
GridCubeyou wont believe the amount of times that was the whole issue and the drives where fine14:17
athlonGridcube: it working well. at least.14:17
athlonGridcube: anyway to check whether the files are there or not?14:18
GridCubetestdisk14:18
athlonGridcube: normal searching doesn't seem to display anything.14:18
athlonGridcube: I would avoid testdisk.14:18
GridCubethen i have no idea14:19
athlonGridcube: any way else beside testdisk?14:19
athlonGridcube: anyway, there is a cross sign in a file I'm trying to copy. How should i remove that?14:20
athlonGridcube: file permission.. like14:20
GridCubethat would mean that the files do not belong to you, you could root them14:21
athlonGridcube: can I use chown?14:25
qwebirc92123Sorry I lost connection14:25
qwebirc92123I am reporting bug in xfce bugtracking site, how do I get my system information about Xfce, Java and Xubuntu in command line please ?14:25
GridCubei would not recommend to ctouch the files themselfs if they are already faulty athlon14:25
athlonGridcube: the file are not faulty.14:26
athlonGridcube: it's a different file.14:27
GridCubeqwebirc92123: if you have a bug to report about a stock program from the ubuntu repos, you can do "ubuntu-bug name-of-the-package" and ubuntu-bug will collect all infor and sent it to launchpad bugtracker, if its from xfce4-panel i think it gets mirrored to xfce bugtracking14:27
GridCubeathlon: then i think you can, unless the whole mounted drive is on read-only, then you should remount it using force rw14:28
GridCubeqwebirc92123: if you have inxi installed you can get lots of information about your whole system,14:29
athlonGridcube: i can't seem to use chown because of the file naming14:32
GridCube!tab14:32
ubottuYou can use your <tab> key for autocompletion of nicknames in IRC, as well as for completion of filenames and programs on the command line.14:32
athlonGridcube: it says "missing operand after filenames"?14:33
GridCubeathlon: man chown14:34
athlonGridcube: so chmod and chown are different?14:34
qwebirc92123thx GridCube14:44
athlonGridcube: what trigged that cross sign to appear on file?14:44
GridCubeathlon: if the mounted drive was on read only, or the ownership of the files changed, or your identity changed, or the filesystem locked itself for somereason, or anything else i don't know14:45
GridCubeqwebirc92123: no problem, good luck14:45
athlonGridcube: but only on some files? like 30 files but only 2 have that cross signs.14:48
GridCubethey could have being created by a different user14:48
GridCubelike if you go and do "sudo touch lockedfile.txt" it would belong to root and only root could delete it14:49
athlonGridcube: can I avoid that to happen? create/make the file so all can access it.14:50
GridCubesure14:50
athlonGridcube: how?14:50
xubuntu47wFrom last night, re xfce4-weather-plugin: Activate trusty-proposed and 'sudo apt-get --only-upgrade install xfce4-weather-plugin' works14:51
GridCubeathlon: most direct and probably dangerous way? chmod 777 /path/to/file.extension14:54
GridCubewell, no that would make them exectuables14:54
athlonGridcube: chmod 666 everytime I create a file?14:55
GridCubethat would not really be necesary, only if you are using root all the time14:56
GridCubebut you should not be using root14:56
GridCubefiles in general should all have rw in shared spaces14:56
GridCubelike in a mounted drive in /media14:56
GridCuberegardless of the user14:57
GridCubeunless its locked specifically14:57

athlonGridcube: I don't know why but it does seem that some files are created with that permission automatically.15:09
GridCubemaybe what ever process is creating them is being run by a different user athlon15:09
athlonGridcube: so there's no automatically way to make the file to be recognized (editable) by other user?15:11
GridCubeim pretty sure there is, i however, do not know it15:11
GridCubeit it where me i would try to determinate why they are being created that way if thats not the way i want ,and change that15:12

athlonHedgework: would "ls" command reveal list of files that are corrupt/ missing bytes?15:32
athlonHedgework: or "ls" command won't at some point if the files were too damaged/corrupted?15:34
GridCubeif its listed on the filesystems it should get listed by ls, if its not visible by the filesystems it wont15:46

emmieskottlandsgHello, I am a beginner. Anyone up for helping me? I am trying to put xubuntu on an old laptop which is running windows xp and get rid of windows. So far I got the iso downloaded, got it on a usb stick, tried to boot from that and it didn't work.18:04
emmieskottlandsgIt says: Error: No configuration file found18:04
emmieskottlandsgthenm 'no DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found18:05
Hedgeworkemmieskottlandsg: That is unusual.  Are you certain that the machine is trying to boot to the USB stick and not some other device?  If so, my next step in troubleshooting would be to confirm that I got a good ISO (no corruption in transit) and that it was written to the USB stick correctly.18:06
emmieskottlandsgThank you Hedgework. I just downloaded the xubuntu iso from this site and then put it straight on the flash drive. Do I maybe need to do something else to make it bootable?18:08
slickymasterWorkemmieskottlandsg: also, you can have a read at http://askubuntu.com/questions/30374/boot-failure-no-default-or-ui-configuration-directive-found18:08
HedgeworkYes, that won't work, that's just an image file.  If you have access to a Linux or UNIX machine, I can tell you how to write it properly, but I've never tried to do it from Windows.18:09
emmieskottlandsgAmazing. I am running Ubuntu now from my PC, perfect18:09
Hedgeworkemmieskottlandsg: then, if your ISO is stored at "~/thing.iso" and your USB stick is at "/dev/sdb" you can do "sudo dd if=~/thing.iso of=/dev/sdb" and get the desired result.  Note that this must be done as root (sudo) and there is no protection to keep you from nuking your hard drive, so please make sure you have the correct paths in there!18:11
HedgeworkOh, also, the copy of the iso you use in that command can't be on the USB stick you are rewriting, or the whole thing will die forcing you to re-download the ISO if you want to make it work.18:12
emmieskottlandsgThank you. Ok I have the .iso on this computer and took it off the stick. Not sure how to see where the iso or stick are stored, you say 'if the ISO is stored at...'? I get that I need to put this command (sudo dd if=~/thing.iso of=/dev/sdb) into the terminal but just don't know hoe I check if the paths are correct. Sorry learner driver here!18:14
emmieskottlandsgalso the .iso has iso.torrent at the end because i downloaded it as a torrent, do i need to get rid of that somehow?18:15
Alexfrenchoften you have the choice, from torrent or fom mirrors18:18
Alexfrenchfrom18:18
Hedgeworkumm, please do "ls -lh /path/to/file.iso.torrent" for me...usually the .torrent file is not the actual iso, but instructions to help the torrent client find the iso to download18:18
Hedgeworkemmieskottlandsg: I have to turn my attention back to work for a bit, but I'm sure someone else can help you verify that you have the iso file and check that your paths are correct.18:19
HedgeworkGood luck!18:19
emmieskottlandsgCool thanks i'll look it up :-). Glad to get some help18:20
emmieskottlandsgHmm the terminal pretty much denied all knowledge of anything when I did '"ls -lh /path/to/file.iso.torrent"'. Any ideas anyone?18:35
knomeemmieskottlandsg, did you replace the "/path/to.." with the actual ISO file name?18:36
emmieskottlandsgno! thanks knome, obvious but not to me. But I think i might have worked out that this is what i need to do so i'm trying that before asking more questions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick#Creating_a_bootable_Ubuntu_USB_flash18:39

max12345hello #xubuntu I come to speak blasphemy... I found a use case for a windows 8 style screen split to four equally space windows... never mind that though, is there a way I can set a config for my terminal to always be a certain size?22:22
knomemax12345, you might want to look at gdevilspie available in the repositories22:23
max12345thank you I will22:23
drcmax12345: Open terminal Preferences>Appearence> Default geometry...should do the default terminal size22:25

drcand it's not (necessarily) blasphemy...I have to desktops, one for fullscreen apps (FF) and one (thunar, terminal, xchat, etc) quartered like you said.22:29
drcSetting the Window Manager>Advanced>Windows Snapping   and   Window Manager Tweaks>Placement>"Minimum size of windows..." to Large  makes it easy to use the quartered desktop.22:32
osdxOK guys I'm a lil stumped here. I'm installing Win 7 and xubuntu 14.04 w/ full encryption ecryptfs etc. My issue is, when I install win first using say 10% of my drive, then when I install xubuntu I don't have the option for full encryption in the install GUI, they are grayed out. What's the best way to go here? With win installed already, should I install without full disk encryption and then config it manually afterwards? Wipe t23:16
osdxhe whole disk,, shrink the encrypted partition,, install win,, reconfig grub2 blah?23:16

osdxOK guys I'm a lil stumped here. I'm installing Win 7 and xubuntu 14.04 w/ full encryption ecryptfs etc. My issue is, when I install win first using say 10% of my drive, then when I install xubuntu I don't have the option for full encryption in the install GUI, they are grayed out.23:18
osdxWhat's the best way to go here? With win installed already, should I install without full disk encryption and then config it manually afterwards? Wipe the whole disk,, shrink the encrypted partition,, install win,, reconfig grub2 blah?23:19
