SnowhogFor anyone who upgraded from 14.04 to 14.10 and found that their network wasn't auto-starting, I solved the issue. See https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1354924/comments/2401:43
ubottuUbuntu bug 1354924 in network-manager (Ubuntu) "Networkmanager does not autoconnect to wireless network" [Undecided,Confirmed]01:43
SnowhogIn my case, both wireless and wired connections were affected. Now both work just as they are supposed to.01:44
valoriewow01:50
valorieI would love to see that fixed in upgrades and the ISO01:50
valoriebecause my workaround was to click the "any person can use this network" which I guess exposes the passw01:51
valoriesince kwallet isn't working right now01:51
* valorie filed the bug in bko01:52

loveshi just updated to kde plasma 5 on kubuntu 14.10 64 bit as described in the official docs.  I chose the SDDM login manager But after the upgrade a lot of times my programs freeze for 20-30 seconds and then they are back to normal07:00
valorielovesh: please check and see if lightdm is still installed, and if it is, remove it07:00
loveshthis freezing happens every 5-10 mins07:01
valorieI still have freezes though, but very randomly07:01
valorienone today07:01
valorie::knock on wood::07:01
valoriebut some days 5!07:01
valoriereally annoying07:01
loveshhow do i check that?07:01
valorieeasiest, in the cli: `apt-cache policy lightdm`07:02
valoriebut of course you can use muon or whatever package manager you prefr07:02
valorieprefer07:02
loveshalso sometimes udisksd consumes 70% CPU. btw its using 10-15 % cpu all the time07:02
loveshit says installed07:03
loveshlet me remove it07:04
valorieI would uninstall it, since you are using SDDM07:04
valorieI ended up having to uninstall KDM as well!07:05
loveshshould i uninstall kdm too?07:05
valoriewhich surprised me, since I've never used that that I recall07:05
valoriecertainly not on this laptop07:05
valorielovesh: if it is there, sure07:06
valorieit can only cause trouble07:06
loveshi have lightdm gobject and lightdm-qt too. i guess i thould remove them too07:07
valorielovesh: I don't see udisks at all in top07:07
valorieyes, you don't need them07:07
loveshsimilarly i have kdm-theme-bespin, kdm-gdmcompat, etc. should i remove them too07:08
valoriehuh07:09
valoriethemes you would think would come with the application they are theming07:09
valorieodd07:09
valoriesure, you certainly don't need them07:09
valoriesounds like perhaps you had a different desktop in the past?07:10
valorieUnity or Gnome?07:10
loveshgnome07:10
valorieok07:10
valorieusually uses gdm07:10
valorieor at least used to07:10
loveshwhen i installed kubuntu 14.10 my screen resolution was screwed up. i could not fix it but after plasma its ok07:11
loveshi mean plasma 507:11
valorienice07:12
valorieI'm still finding things missing, etc.07:12
valorieand filing some bugs along the way07:12
valoriebut it is my working desktop07:12
valorieso far, so good07:12
loveshits still freezing although i have 3 gb ram free of 8 gb07:13
loveshaslo kwin_x11 and Xorg seem to be using 10% cpu07:13
loveshits between 8-10%07:13
valoriemy freezing seems to be associated with first chromium and then firefox07:14
loveshfor each07:14
valorieI was seriously considering going back to konqueror or rekonq07:14
valoriebut then the freezing stopped07:14
loveshok. i am using google-chrome not chromium but how did u fix that?07:14
valorienot sure07:14
loveshafter how many reboots did the freezing stop?07:15
valorieit could have been coincidental to a period of horrible connectivity from comcast07:15
valoriethat seems to have evened out at the same time the freezing stopped07:15
valoriehard to think of how one would cause the other, though07:16
loveshhow can i make sure that i have removed all components that gnome was using. that might have been causing some issues07:16
loveshi have noticed for a long time that in ubuntu if i refresh my network the system freezes for about few seconds07:17
loveshso i think there is some connection in the graphical shell and network connections07:18
valorieinteresting07:20
valorieyou could be right07:20
valorie!purekde07:20

Guest75712i can switch to alternate terminals using ctrl+alt+f23407:45
Guest75712the hard disk seems to be working a lot07:45
valorieGuest75712: you might try doing do-release-upgrade in a console and see what it says07:46
Guest75712the do-release-upgrade is already running in a Konsole in the desktop07:46
valorieare you sure it is still running?07:46
Guest75712but the desktop got locked and now i cant get back to it07:46
valorie!lock07:47

NexiaHi there. I had a question: a few minutes ago, kwin stopped working out of nowhere in my kubuntu installation, leaving me stranded. I tried to re-log in, reboot to no avail. And terminal said that it wasn't installed!13:50
NexiaI tried updating from terminal, which made no difference either, but eventually (after flipping through some firefox windows via ctrl+q, and the kickoff, which thankfully stayed), I got to actually installing it "back" by doing sudo apt-get install kde-workspace13:53
Nexiamy question is basically, isn't there a simple "repair" utility or something via the cli for this sort of thing that can "repair" any corrupted or missing kubuntu system files?13:54
Nexiaand, did I do the right thing?13:54
zlakerboy357:)13:54
BluesKajNexia, is kwin back and working ? and yes installing kde-workspace was the correct solution, but the question remains why did kwin disappear ?13:59
NexiaI don't know why either, and yes, atm I ran it by doing "kwin" in the terminal, so it's running from terminal13:59
Nexiabut I bet it'll work when I reboot now14:00
BluesKajI guess we'll see soon enough then14:00
Nexiabecause one of the messages I read while it finished installing was14:00
NexiaSetting up kde-window-manager (4:4.11.11-0ubuntu0.1) ...14:00
Nexiaupdate-alternatives: using /usr/bin/kwin to provide /usr/bin/x-window-manager (x-window-manager) in auto mode14:00
NexiaOkay, I'll reboot heh.14:00
NexiaYep, kwin started as usual14:03
Nexiaso, it's working, but what puzzles me is what I did to uninstall it >_>14:04
Nexiaand..if there is anything else "broken" along with it that I don't know of14:04
hateballperhaps check your bash history for commands you've run, such as apt-get removing things depending on kwin or such14:04
Nexiaok14:05
BluesKajdid you update/ upgrade ?14:05
NexiaI hadn't in a while14:05
Nexialike I said, after this happened, I tried to update/upgrade only then from the terminal14:06
BluesKajmaybe an update/upgrade is in order then14:06
Nexiaand it did update "successfully" (upgrade was 202 mb or something, so I skipped it)14:07
Nexiabut it did not fix kwin at all14:07
BluesKajmakes no differenc ewhere you upgrade from the packaghe managers including apt-get all use the dpkg system to update and upgrade14:07
Nexiaso nothing in bash history really14:13
Nexiadidn't do it myself, that's for sure14:13
BluesKajweird14:15
Nexia>_< oh well.14:16
BluesKajNexia, do you have your package manager set to auto-upgrade? seems I recall a setting similar to that on muon and synaptic14:20
NexiaI don't think so14:20
Nexiahow can I check?14:21
Nexiaand like, there were 202 MB of upgrade downloads14:21
Nexiaand i hadn't done it a while, so I don't think it's set on "auto-upgrade"14:21
BluesKajlook in the package manager/software center settings14:22

EvilRoeyhey when is Wayland hitting Kubuntu?17:10
EvilRoeyrealistically speaking17:10
EvilRoeyis it within a year?17:10
EvilRoeybefore 15.10?17:10
BluesKajEvilRoey, your guess is as good as anyone's , there doesn't seem to be any definite Wayland adoption schedule17:17

EvilRoeythat's kind of what I thought17:19
EvilRoeyBluesKaj:  thanks17:19
EvilRoeyBluesKaj:  also, I thought of how once NVidia comes out with drivers for Wayland or Wayland and Mir, how quickly work would get done to get KDE on Wayland and into Kubuntu17:19
BluesKajEvilRoey, you could ask in #kubuntu-devel17:20

EvilRoeyWHEN WILL KUBUNTU RELEASE WITH WAYLAND NATIVELY17:23
EvilRoeyBluesKaj:  is that the idea?  Kubuntu will go with Wayland and KDE applications 5, and Ubuntu with Mir?17:23
EvilRoeyand Gnome?17:23
EvilRoeybrb17:24
RiddellEvilRoey: we've no idea, wayland support is still to be added to kwin and plasma17:24
BluesKajyes, that seems to be the directions they are taking, Ubuntu with Mir and Kubuntu with Wayland17:24
EvilRoeyRiddell:  understood17:32
EvilRoeyBluesKaj:  it's jsut that I haven't yet heard Canonical acknowledging this disparity17:32
rwwwhy would they?17:33
BluesKajcanonical is no longer supporting Kubuntu, afaik Blue Systems is now the official support source17:33
EvilRoeyright, I understand.17:35
EvilRoeyBecause people might want to install Ubuntu and then KDE apps on top of that17:35

bpromptanqxyr:     ... I don't use ktorrent .... or haven't.... what's the default behaviour?    I usually download torrents manually19:46
anqxyrby default any newly added torrents are put at the end of the queue19:46

bpromptanqxyr:     if I think abou it.... what constitutes a "new torretnt" or new queue entry....   what would that be?  the latest you added?    and isn't that the default behaviour?19:53
anqxyryes, new torrent is the latest added, and they're put at the end of the queue by default19:54
anqxyrI can then move them in the queue by hand, but that's not what I want19:54
