[Segger]Would anyone here know why when the ATI drivers keep defaulting to slightly the wrong resolution for my laptop?01:33
[Segger]if I suspend or restart X at all, the ati drivers revert back to 1360x768 instead of 1366x76801:33
[Segger]It even says "1366x768 (Preferred)"01:34

tsunif xubuntu 14.10 is at the "Install type" page and stuck having "Continue" grayed out, what should I do other than waiting?07:08
skribblezatchathe installer is like that tsun?08:01
tsunWell it works now, turns out when I put the "Install 3rd party software" for some reason it didn't let me "continue"08:02

stellar01looking for to update Ubuntu Lucid Lynx to Precise Pangolin17:24
holsteinstellar01: i would prefer backup and fresh install.. otherwise, http://www.westernwillow.com/cms/blog/franco/upgrading-old-or-end-life-eol-release-ubuntu-back-usefulness is how i would attempt to risk it17:27
holsteinstellar01: please reference https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Upgrades and backup regardless17:27
rww!lucid17:30
ubottuUbuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) was the twelfth release of Ubuntu.  Desktop support ended May 9 2013. Server support continues. See http://ubottu.com/y/lucid for more details.17:30
rwwhuh, older than I thought17:30
rwwi don't think EOL upgrade process applies to it though, repos should still be there, so regular upgrade from the second link should work17:31
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Upgrades#Server_.2BAC8_Command_line_Upgrade should work, since 10.04 repos are still up..17:32
* rww nods17:32
stellar01holstein: thnx ... will do for sure ... also checking the ubuntuforums.org with keyword: update to precise pangolin17:33
holsteinstellar01: the quickest and easiest is going to be to backup, and fresh install 14.0417:39
stellar01holstein: backup and fresh install ... got it17:40
stellar01holstein: why is a fresh install better than an upgrade, can't you lose some of your settings wihtout a completely autonomous backup and restore17:42
holsteinstellar01: no.. you *will* lose *all* of your settings when that hard drive fails.. so, go ahead now, and backup everything important to you before doing either17:46
drcstellar01: Yes, you will your settings on a new install, but if you do the backup (especially of the config files) you can just drop those youwant in the new install (be advised that some configs can change with the new release).17:46
drcAnd the old configs might not work with the new release, things change :)17:48
stellar01drc: okay ... what backup program should i use that is open source and free17:48
holsteinstellar01: you can literaly use the file manager17:48
drcThunar :)17:48
holsteinstellar01: the files are all available for you to copy and use however you like17:48
drcCopy ~/.config off to some media and cherry pick what you want to releace the new configs.17:49
stellar01holstein: file manager, I will try that ... when I prepare more for my upgrade17:50
stellar01drc: i will copy my linked dirs from .config as well as any other custom setups i have, thanks17:51
drcstellar01: Also you can copy off the config folders like .mozilla, thunderbird and .xchat (also in ~ ) if you custom app configs you want to save.17:52
holsteinyou really shouldnt just expect an application made in 2010 to just accept the config file in 2014, either17:53
drc+5 :)17:53
holsteinyou can have issue just dropping in the config for something that has changed a lot..17:53
=== bazhang_ is now known as bazhang
stellar01holstein: drc: how would i backup my custom lib packages modules programs etc. - I have dpkg backup images, but i am not sure how to keep all of my run programs for use in my new installation17:53
drcBut if you renmae the new config file/folder before dropping in the old one, you can always "revert" to the new config.17:54
holsteinwhat i typicaly do is, backup my data.. my media files.. then, i'll get a copy of my users /home with all .hidden directories like .mozzilla that drc references.. then, i'll copy those as needed for proper backups.. then, i just install normally.. running the live media to test17:54
holsteinafter the install checks out and i am happy with the install, i'll drop in specifically the configs i want/need. *not* just everything17:54
holsteinstellar01: if you maintain your own software, you maintain it.. you may need to rebuild them on the newer system17:55
holsteinstellar01: could be, you cant just drop those in either..17:55
stellar01okay :) got it17:55
drcAs holstein says, YMMV...no impled warranties :)17:56
stellar01holstein: i am using backup2l ... is it sufficient enough ??17:58
holsteinstellar01: thats up to you17:58
stellar01okay17:58
holsteinstellar01: for "Mission critical" data, i use the 3 2 1 rule.. 3 copies, 2 different media, 1 offsite..17:59
holsteinstellar01: for most of my casual media, i have online copies i trust.. there is not "good enough" backup, or backup tool. there is only waht you need, and wnat meets those needs18:00
holsteinstellar01: i suggest *not* blindly trusting *anything*.. and look before you wipe. and keep in mind that *all* hard drives fail18:00
stellar01holstein: Good idea, I will do that, as I should probably have my own offline media, but I don't ... newbie to the max !18:01
drcand if there is a way to check the backups once made, do that to!18:01
holsteinstellar01: there is no "should".. if you have online storgae you trust , and can trust, then, that works18:01
* drc has seen more that one example of failed backups not noticed (untill needed)18:01
stellar01I will try and do it by the book, before I install anything I will ensure my backups are made properly first !!! Maybe I will dedicate a flash drive to offline backup, to avoid confusion.18:02
holsteinif i was totallyh scared of losing that 10.04 install, i would clone it, and recover it to a VM.. i would terst the VM, and see that it works.. then, backup that VM ;)18:02
holsteinthen, i can wipe the machine,a nd access what i want from the VM18:03
holsteinstellar01: there is no "book", friend18:03
holsteinstellar01: there is what you want and need, and what meets those wants and needs..18:03
holsteinone dedicated flash drive can fail right in the middle of the move ;) ..or the building you are in could catch fire, for example18:04
holsteini dont have any data that im that concerned with.. but, if you do, you need to make preperations for that18:04
stellar01holstein: "do not go into the illusion that because you are error preventitive that there will be no errors." famous quote ~18:05
holsteinstellar01: exactly.. i like to say, go ahead and plan for total failure, and you will be ready :)18:06
GridCubeholstein: o: its the first time i ever hear you say that18:06
drcAnd hope to be disappointed.18:07
stellar01holstein: do you have suggest for clone program18:07
holsteinstellar01: i use clonezilla.. but, its just using normal dd commands in the background18:08
stellar01for sure, and i should go out to vhd or iso18:08
holsteinstellar01: again, there is no "should".. i would do whatever fits the need best18:09
holsteini usually just go to a file on a USB drive18:10
stellar01sounds smart ...18:11
stellar01holstein: drc: thanks for the links too guys18:13
stellar01http://maarten.lippmann.us/?page_id=116 - great for using dd or for making virtual platforms19:12
holsteinstellar01: just remember, dd has a nickname.. "disk destroyer".. you can really cause yourself some damage by mixing up those sources and destinations..19:14
stellar01holstein: I see19:21
