xubuntu75iHello, there. I have a question about my installation and need some help, please.05:25
cfhowlett!help | xubuntu75i05:26
ubottuxubuntu75i: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience05:26
xubuntu75iThank you. Anyways, my problem is that the installation is hanging at the creation of the ext4 file system in my first partition. I expanded it, and theres been no activity for about an hour now.05:29
cfhowlett!md5sum | xubuntu75i, 1.  verify your .iso    2. verify your USB05:33
ubottuxubuntu75i, 1.  verify your .iso    2. verify your USB: To verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM or http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows05:33
xubuntu75iFrom the looks of it, I'll have to stop the installation to do that. While I was reading the two links, a few more lines popped up talking about failure to enable a usb device. I should probably also let you know that I'm booting from a disk.05:41
cfhowlettxubuntu75i, yes you do need to stop the install.  I'm guessing your .iso or USB are faulty.  gigo.  md5sum takes less than 5 minutes to do both checks ...05:49

ChrisD24Hey guys - anyone have duplicate icons in the panel? I setup my fourth xubuntu computer (my MacBook Pro) - which is my own and after installing it three times (long story) each time after a while I would get two bluetooth icons on the top and two clocks...I hid the extra ones, but why is my computer the only one doing strange things none of the others do? :)15:27
holsteinChrisD24: could be simply hardware related.. could be something you are not thinking is causing the issue. could be anything in the config of the desktop.. added packages, etc15:35
ChrisD24Hm - well I hid them so out of sight out of mind. I had one heck of a time with integrated graphics - I finally just switched off the ATI. I tried and tried and finally said heck with it. I don't do anything that requires ATI.15:37
holsteinit can be challenging.. i had a challenging time with macbook hardware and linux.. i ended up with reFit that seemed to help.. but, i just dont use that hardare unless i have to15:38
holsteini like to think of it this way.. apple, and any manufacturer are welcome and encouraged to make sure that xubuntu or any linux OS can run well on the hardware they sell.. all of linux is open, so its quite available for them to do so.. if they dont, or if they actually make it challenging for the hardware to be supported, then, it will be challenging for the end user15:39
YourPlaceOrMineHi :)15:39
ChrisD24I tried with refind, but I just added the outb commands to grub loader and powered down the discrete graphics.15:39
holsteinit could be just a few "fiddly" things as far as support that makes the issues you see happen15:40
ChrisD24I have the 2011 with my 2nd or 3rd ATI graphics chip replaced - so it's not like it would last if I used it anyhow.15:40
holsteinChrisD24: i also wasnt trying to dual boot.. not sure if that mades things easier15:40
YourPlaceOrMineany way i can clean up xubuntu i have ssd.  say's bleachbit not recommended?15:41
YourPlaceOrMinety15:41
YourPlaceOrMinei'm fairly fresh 2 linux15:41
holsteinYourPlaceOrMine: what do you mean by "cleanup" ?15:42
YourPlaceOrMineoh well like on windows 8 i delete and clean a lot junk15:42
ChrisD24 I removed Mac OS completely and straight EFI boot into Ubuntu. No more Mac.15:42
YourPlaceOrMinedo i need 2 here?15:42
holsteinYourPlaceOrMine: the web browser you use should have easy tools for wiping history.. or modes like icognito mode15:43
holsteinYourPlaceOrMine: you dont "need" to in windows.. but, you can if yo uwant15:43
ChrisD24I removed Windows 8 from my partners mothers computer - so sick of cleaning up adware. So I said I'm putting this on.15:43
YourPlaceOrMineoh ok thank you15:43
holsteinYourPlaceOrMine: if you want to remove something, you can remove it.. but, there wont be a "cleanup" button, since, its up to you to determine what is "dirty"15:43
YourPlaceOrMineok great, ty so much, i found some info on google 215:45
holsteinYourPlaceOrMine: you can link whatever info you find on google here and ask. i suggest *not* just randomly copy/pasting commands into the terminal that you find on google15:45
holsteinYourPlaceOrMine: any command that you run as sudo.. like "sudo command" is running the command as root, and can cause issues if you are unaware of what is happening15:46
ChrisD24holstien are you using your MB now? What kind is it?15:47
YourPlaceOrMinesynaptic manager for removing app's is way 2 go?15:47
YourPlaceOrMinei wanna switch parole for vlc15:47
holsteinYourPlaceOrMine: not that im trying to scare you away from a sudo command.. just be aware.. and try asking a precise detailed question.. "im trying to clear hard drive space".. etc15:47
YourPlaceOrMineyes ty15:48
holsteinYourPlaceOrMine: just install vlc.. you can use synaptic if you like.. but, why are you removing?15:48
YourPlaceOrMinethis look's like fun, linux is sweet so far15:48
holsteinYourPlaceOrMine: for example, you wont clear up much hard drive space removing parole.. its likely under 10mb's installed15:48
holsteinYourPlaceOrMine: having it installed doesnt mean its running like a service, so, its not taking up CPU or ram.. and little hard drive space..15:49
YourPlaceOrMineok will keep it, that makes sense15:49
YourPlaceOrMinei got a lot room15:49
holsteini mean, remove it if you want.. but, dont remove it to clear up hard drive space.. you wont save much that way15:49
primI'm trying to set my screen resolution like so: http://pastebin.com/vUbiF2P5 , where can add this so that the change is persistent through reboots? I have tried various methods read from outdated threads with no success.15:51
ChrisD24holstein (mis tagged you) are you using your MB now? What kind is it?15:53
holsteinprim: ill use arandr. and create a script from it. it'll export it.. i use it in xfce15:53
holsteinChrisD24: older white one.. i dont use it right now, since, i loaned the power supply15:54
ChrisD24Oh ok :)15:54
holsteinChrisD24: i was using an older kernel, that seemed to support the hardware best out of the box15:55
holsteinim not the kind of guy who takes a machine from 2007, and expects a kernel from 2014 to support all the hardware out of the box :)15:56
primholstein, alright I've done that http://pastebin.com/BHYHeT0F where should I plug this script in so it runs on boot?15:56
holsteinprim: i literally added it into the startup session for my user15:56
primholstein, can you be more specific15:56
holsteinprim: in the GUI.. "sessions" iirc.. the area labeled "startup".15:57
primholstein, thank you~~15:57
holsteinprim: looks like http://askubuntu.com/questions/369406/xubuntu-apps-loading-at-start-up15:57
ChrisD24:) Well 2011 to 2014 isn't to old. :) I think I have a lot of life left in this baby. :)15:57
primholstein, rebooting to test it out15:58
holsteinprim: i took the export i was given from arandr, and made a bash script that i tested.. and then added to autostart.. seems like i had to sleep it.. i know there are many ways to do the same thing15:58
YourPlaceOrMinehave nice day holstein, ur help was great!16:02
primok so the script that AandR generated was not sufficient: http://pastebin.com/BHYHeT0F , as the resolution I am trying to set is not listed by default (hence why I need to create it before choosing it using the following xrandr commands:) http://pastebin.com/vUbiF2P5 , so I tried this instead: http://pastebin.com/Be2hbf8p (I tried adding each to the startup session) with no luck.16:16
holsteinprim: you should be able to edit the script that is provided to be what you want16:18
holsteinprim: you can also add a custom xorg.conf.. but, the hardware will have to be capable of what you are trying to do.. hardware and drivers..16:18
holsteinprim: arandr is just a GUI..16:18
primholstein, as far as editing the AandR sript, isn't that what I did here http://pastebin.com/Be2hbf8p ?16:18
holsteinprim: you can test that, and see if it works.. if its not, then, maybe the hardware isnt capable.. has the hardware ever done that geometry for you under linux?16:19
holsteinprim: if the script sets what you want, and works.. then, add it to autostart.. but, if it doesnt work "stand-alone", it wont work at startup16:20
primI'll explain again. The resolution I want it not listed. I have to manually set this resolution in a terminal using these three commands each time I boot up:  http://pastebin.com/vUbiF2P516:20
primholstein, I just want this to be done automatically when I boot up16:21
holsteinprim: sure.. do the 3 commands actually work? if so, add the script that is tested and working to the autostart16:21
primyes they work perfectly fine16:21
holsteinprim: try adding the script to the autostart.. http://askubuntu.com/questions/369406/xubuntu-apps-loading-at-start-up16:22
primYes I made this script http://pastebin.com/Be2hbf8p and added it to my startup session like you suggested16:22
holsteinprim: ok.. and?16:22
primhowever the screen defaults to 1024x76816:22
holsteinprim: try sleeping the start of that script16:22
primI haven't got much experience with bash script16:23
primsec ill googlez16:23
holsteinprim: test *that* exact bash script and see that it works.. if it works, then try adding it to the startup.. if when you start it, it seems that the default settings are overriding it, try sleeping the start of that command in the startup GUI in xfce session16:23
primbrb16:27
primholstein, ok thanks, this pastebin.com/YK1by40N works when added to session startup, arander isn't very helpful for new modes. thanks for the help!16:33

WalliskiAnd want to logout users17:28
Walliskithat are inactive for a while17:29
WalliskiWhat is the way to do this?17:29
WalliskiATM I got a script that checks logged in users, and sees if xprintidle > than my value17:29
WalliskiAnd if that is the case, it finds the correct DBUS for this user, and tries to run the logout method on it17:29
WalliskiHowever this doesnt seem to work17:30
WalliskiAs if the DBUS doesnt want to recieve commands from the "wrong" user...17:30
WalliskiAny ideas how to do it?17:30
Airbandersorry i didnt understand what you said17:32
Airbanderi'm new in linux17:33
WalliskiI suppose I wont get much help from you then either ;) But don't worry, it comes with the years..17:33
GridCubeWalliski: wouldnt lightlocker be the one who takes care of that?17:34
GridCubelike if lightlocker activates after x amount of time and locks the screen, then you relog17:34
Unit193Walliski: What address are you sending the dbus command to?  I take it, you can't sudo -u $USER dbus-send  it?17:35

GridCubeWalliski: no idea17:44
Walliski:D17:44
Airbanderthanks GridCube I LOVE LINUX17:44
WalliskiGridCube: Thanks for the tip, I'll see if it would be a smarter alternative.. The "logoutButton" seemed nice, it is similiar to something we have had in a many year old linux distro17:45
AirbanderWall you cant logout ?17:46
GridCubeno Airbander he has a particular case use17:46
Airbanderok17:47
WalliskiAirbander: The problem is that someone uses the computer, goes away with the computer locked, forgets about it, and leaves it logged in forever...17:47
Airbanderi think this will help Ctr+Alt+F417:47
Airbanderah17:48
Airbandervery complicated for me :)17:48
WalliskiAnd multiple users logged in is not an alternative, since it makes the computer slow17:48
Airbanderkillall17:48
Airbander:D17:49
Airbanderi'm new in linux sorry i can't help17:49
Airbanderbut i will think about it17:49
WalliskiOne can kill all the guys processes... But if you do it the proper way, it will save the session, which programs are open etc :)17:50
WalliskiWHilst killing processes kills everything and wont let the programs save in case they do17:50
Airbanderyep17:51
Airbanderthanks for info17:51
WalliskiBut yeah, I got the script somehow working, I'll fix the last bits, and then I can share if I remember :P17:51

xubuntu70wWhat's the best irc client for xubuntu?17:55
Unit193xubuntu70w: Usually, there is no single "best" application to perform a given task. It's up to you to choose, depending on your preferences, features you require, and other factors.  Are you looking for a graphical or terminal client?  One which keeps scrollback or only when you're sitting there?17:56
xubuntu70wUnit193: probabily GUI? I use weechat on my laptop from terminal so I guess GUI might be easier to navigate18:03
xubuntu70wI guess I am asking for the general, most easy to use, beginner friendly client18:03
Unit193Perhaps Hexchat or Xchat then, but there are many others (kvirc, quassel, smuxi, etc, etc.)  If you have a server, you can run weechat in screen and just attach to that session from anywhere.18:05
xubuntu70wUnit193: Oh yeah cool. That works with tmux as well right?18:06
Unit193xubuntu70w: Right, of course.18:06
xubuntu70wAttaching a session means resuming from previous convo, so I could see my previous chats?18:06
Unit193Silly tmux users... :(18:06
Unit193:P18:06
xubuntu70w:D18:06
Unit193xubuntu70w: Right, you'd be able to see backlog and what's been going on since you didn't close the client.18:07
nodedfreexubuntu70w, why don't you use bouncer in order to detach previous sessions?18:07
xubuntu70wwhat's bouncer18:07
nodedfreehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BNC_(software)18:07
nodedfreekeeps you alive, even when the client is off.18:08
xubuntu70wOh, I guess I can try that but since I use tmux anyways, I guess I can work with weechat18:08
Unit193weechat or irssi, like tmux vs screen.18:09
nodedfreeterminal irc into tmux.. :s18:10
xubuntu70wnodedfree: I don't know if you are hinting if you are against it or not...? Is there any problem with using terminal weechat with tmux?? Just curious18:11
nodedfreeit's non friendly.. into tmux you can't even scroll up.18:12
xubuntu70wnodedfree: Weechat itself seems to support page up and down, but do those not work if you are in multiplexor?18:13
xubuntu70wAlso, when you connect to freenode, it's just /connect #freenode right?18:14
nodedfreei have no experience with weechat. but even vi & nano has scrolling - that doesn't compatible with tmux18:14
Unit193nodedfree: Yes, yes they are...18:15
Unit193xubuntu70w: /connect freenode, actually.18:15
xubuntu70wnodedfree: Hmmm... I guess I will work with tmux + weechat, and if that doesn't work out, I will go with bouncer18:15
xubuntu70woh18:15
xubuntu70wyeah it worked18:15
nodedfreehave fun..18:15
xubuntu70wNo I meant freenode18:16
xubuntu70wnot scrolling. Haven't tried it yet haha18:16

ObrienDavetry a relog?21:38

ObrienDavei had same issue with corded mouse disconnecting. bought a wireless logitech m510. happy ever since21:46
