radiomarkHi, I've installed xubuntu, is there a GUI partition/LVM manager. One was offered at the install, but I can't find one on the system11:02
andyfiedyou an install on if you can't find one11:05
andyfiedi think gparted was installed as standard though11:05
andyfiedif not, run "sudo apt-get install gparted" from the terminal or find it in the software store11:06
ObrienDavegparted is on the live DVD, not installed by default11:08
radiomarkOk, gparted installed -- but actually I used LVM during the install11:09
radiomarkI also installed a GUI 'logical volume manager'11:09
andyfiedah yeah, that's prossibly lvm211:14
andyfiedwhich is a bit more flexible than gparted11:14
radiomarkI'm setting up a PC for my dad, and I want something he can mange (he's reasonably technical)11:15
radiomarkBut that probably means sensible GUIs and not command line11:15
radiomarkI might avoid LVM if there isn't a decent GUI to manage it after install11:15
andyfiedyou should have something11:16
andyfiedyeah, you want Disk Utility if you can install it11:17
radiomarkYes, found the GUI one. I'm trying to shrink the root partition now, doing that from the live cd instead of the booted system11:17
andyfiedshould also be in software centre11:17
andyfiedi'm reading that it's not installed in xubuntu by default11:17
radiomarkI'm on the LTS version ... I can't see a "Disk utility" in the software centre11:17
andyfiedhttps://apps.ubuntu.com/cat/applications/precise/gnome-disk-utility/ check this link11:18
andyfiedand try to get it from there11:18
radiomarkAh, it's actually called "Disks" -- but that is the "gnome-disk-utility" command11:19
andyfiedi'm mostly an ubuntu user, my xubuntu PC doesn't have a monitor so i'm only on command line for it11:19
radiomarkAh, the GNOME utility still doesn't do any LVM11:20
andyfiedand yeah, things have weird naming things11:20
radiomarkI guess I was hoping to use LVM as a way to snapshot the root11:21
radiomarkSo in the event of catastrophe he can go back to the snapshot11:21
andyfiedah, well there are other things too11:21
radiomarkBut I am not an LVM user generally on my own Linux systems11:21
andyfiedme neither, probably a normal backup program would do though11:22
andyfiedbackintime does good snapshots11:22
andyfiedit's easy to configure and has a decent amount of options, i'm not a fan of deja dupe because you don't get many options11:23
ObrienDavejust rsync to external drive11:24
andyfiedmassively important to automate the backup process11:25
radiomarkrsync and that sort of thing is good for me, but I'd like it for dad if there is just an easy way to rewind the main system drive11:25
andyfiedgrsync :)11:27
andyfiedfor the GUI version, but backintime is pretty good since it just uses rsync anyway but has a nice gui11:27
radiomarkThanks, I will have to lok into backup tools11:47
clovhi14:37
clovwhen i login i can only see the wallpaper, the mouse pointer and open the terminal14:38

parkerdHello.  I have installed 14.10.  I would like it to shutdown immediately when I click shutdown.  It currently acts like Windows, demanding I confirm three times before it shutsdown.18:21
Hedgeworkparkerd: Mine does NOT do that, so I'll assume that's an Xfce4 setting rather than a system setting (as I don't use the stock Xfce4 DE)...at least that tells you where to look for the problem :/18:22
parkerdI don't know enough to know what desktop I am using.  Any help there?18:22
holsteinparkerd: you are using xfce with xubuntu.. if that is what you are using... xubuntu 14.10?18:23
Hedgeworkparkerd: If you did not install and run something other than the default, you have Xfce418:23
parkerdIt is. 14.1018:23
parkerdOK.  Any idea how to change the shutdown sequence?18:23
holsteinparkerd: i would see if this is still relevant in 14.10 http://xubuntugeek.blogspot.com/2012/06/restartshutdownlog-out-without.html18:24
holsteinparkerd: http://askubuntu.com/questions/339842/xubuntu-hotkey-for-immediate-shutdown is also relevant, if you cant find anything "easy" in the GUI18:25
parkerdI'll look at that link.18:25
parkerdLooks like I need to have a terminal open to execute "dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.ConsoleKit /org/freedesktop/ConsoleKi"18:27
parkerdI'll have to reboot.  Thank you for the links.  The first link addresses the problem.18:30
parkerdHow do I leave chat?18:31
parkerdElegantly that is.18:31
Hedgeworkparkerd: /quit18:32

parkerdHello.  How can I get the shutdown option to appear in the Xcfe panel (upper right by default)?21:20
elfyparkerd: add Action Buttons21:22
parkerdI installed 14.10 and I can't find that option.21:22
elfythen you can right click on that -> Properties and set it to what you want - if you just want the shutdown button you can do so - set appearance to action buttons21:23
elfyparkerd: it's there :)21:23
elfyright click on panel - panel - add new items21:24
parkerdI'm lost.  I right-clicked the panel, I clicked properties and I get a menu titled "Indicators".  Here I can "Arrange indicators in a single row", "Align left in deskbar mode" or hide indicators by default, clear known indicators and some other irrelevant stuff.21:27
parkerdOh, I can select Panels instead of Properties.  I'll try that... .21:27
elfyparkerd: right click panel - add new items - add action buttons - then you can right click on THAT to just have shutdown21:27
parkerdOK, Now I have direct access to Shutdown.  What I want is for the system to shutdown without any further acknowledgement:  I click shutdown and it immediately shuts down.  Any ideas?21:32
elfywhat do you see instead of that?21:33
parkerdI get a window asking if I really want to shutdown.21:35
parkerdJust like Microsoft.21:36
elfyparkerd: works perfectly here lol21:37
elfygo to action button properties and disable the confirmation dialogue21:37
parkerdelfi, that worked.  The computer is still in a hung state after shutdown, but the screen blanks immediately at least.  I have to hold the power button in on the computer to get it to actually shutdown before I can reboot.21:43
elfythen you have other issues I would suggest - not something I'll be able to help you with21:44
parkerdThanks for getting shutdown to work.21:50
