xubuntu20oi am on 14.04, going to upgrade to 14.10 using the terminal02:38
_ben_loweryanyone run into an issue just recently (installed updates this morning) where cursor size is normal inside windows but massive on decorations and the desktop?10:20
brainwash_ben_lowery: xubuntu version?10:23
_ben_lowery14.04 running Xfce 4.10 stock out the packages10:24
brainwashdoes this glitch affect all user accounts? what about the guest session?10:24
_ben_lowerywait 1 and I'll try it as guest10:24
_ben_loweryeffects guest session just the same10:25
_ben_lowerymachine was a fresh install friday with updates applied, applied updates this morning and thats when it started10:26
brainwashno additional PPAs, or?10:26
brainwashjust want to make sure10:26
_ben_loweryonly PPA added is webupd8team/java and the google chrome PPA10:27
brainwashyou should look at /var/log/apt/history.log and see which packages haven been updated exactly10:27
_ben_lowerystranger and stranger, the only thing updated this morning was the linux-image* to 3.13.0-3910:28
_ben_lowerynow I'm wondering if an update on friday broke it but it didn't show up till I rebooted this morning after the kernel update10:29
brainwashpossible, select the older kernel version on boot10:30
_ben_loweryok, brb10:30
_ben_loweryapologies, shift on boot wasn't working so had to write /etc/default/grub, earlier kernel made no difference10:40
brainwashok10:40
brainwashfound this here http://askubuntu.com/questions/486874/mouse-cursor-scaling-issues-in-xubuntu-14-04-with-xfce-4-1010:40
brainwashdid you change your monitor setup? or did you switch to a different display manager?10:41
_ben_lowerythats the exact problem but I don't have HD screens, I have 3x[1920x1200]10:41
_ben_lowerynope still using lightdm same monitors, I was using 14.04 xubuntu before friday I just re-installed on friday to remove some other junk10:41
brainwashso, the root cursor is magically scaled upwards. this should be configurable I'd think10:43
_ben_loweryit used to be donkeys years ago with Xdefault I think10:44
brainwashmaybe this http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=842510:45
AgAufunny you link that... i just tried it and having the same issue10:48
brainwashAgAu: since recently?10:49
AgAui just installed xubuntu 14.04 yesterday. I just tried changing my cursor theme to tet10:49
AgAutest*10:49
AgAui may just reboot quickly to make sure10:50
AgAuyeh weird10:51
AgAucursor theme only applies in applications but not anywhere else10:52
brainwashreally odd10:52
AgAuwhat version are you running?10:53
AgAubecause i think when i was playing with 14.10 in VM the other day the mouse themes seemed to work10:53
_ben_lowerynot just me then10:53
brainwashI'm not experiencing this issue, _ben_lowery does10:53
AgAuah k10:53
AgAuwhat version are you on?_10:54
AgAuim pretty much on a fresh install10:54
_ben_loweryhosting company DNS servers just shit the bed and I'm getting shot with shit because half our stuff just stopped resolving, so responses might be slow as the phone is doing it's dance10:54
_ben_lowery14.04/XFCE 4.10, fresh install as of friday10:54
AgAusame as me then10:55
AgAui may boot up 14.10 and another 14.04 in virtualbox and test later10:55
AgAubecause i swear i played with the cursor theme on 14.10 and didn't have the problem10:55
brainwashdo you have a special monitor setup?10:55
AgAuyeh i thought that may be the reason10:56
knome_ben_lowery, please note that this is a family-friendly channel and adjust your output accordingly. thanks for understanding10:56
AgAui have to use a custom EDID because my monitor doesn't work otherwise10:56
_ben_loweryknome: ok, apologies10:56
AgAuill try switch to the noveou drivers10:56
_ben_loweryI use 3 x Dell 2412m's, used 14.04 on them since it came out with no issues till today10:57
AgAuim using a cheap korean monitor10:57
AgAuso nvidia drivers dont read the settings10:57
_ben_loweryheh, I'm using ATI these days but I remember that joy well10:58
_ben_loweryso we can likely rule out the binary gpu drivers unless nvida and fglrx have the same bug..10:58
AgAui just switched drivers10:58
AgAujust going to do a quick reboot and test10:58
AgAubrb10:58
brainwash_ben_lowery: almost forgot about this.. is the cursor properly sized while the login screen is visible?11:00
_ben_lowerybrainwash: no, it's massive on the dm screen11:00
brainwashah11:01
brainwashI suggest that you file a bug report against the lightdm-gtk-greeter package on launchpad11:01
_ben_loweryyou think that's where the issue is then, the dm?11:02
brainwashsimply run the command "ubuntu-bug lightdm-gtk-greeter"11:02
_ben_loweryI might switch to gdm and see if I have the same issue11:02
brainwashlooks like it11:02
brainwashgood idea11:02
ochosiactually trying unity-greeter is a more sensible option11:02
ochosiless work and gives us a better idea, whether it really is the greeter's fault11:02
brainwashthe greeter initializes the root cursor11:03
AgAuwell11:03
_ben_lowery'k, I'll give that a try as soon as I finish shouting on domain company for DNS been down (gonna have to set this up differently)11:03
AgAusudo update-alternatives --config x-cursor-theme11:03
AgAuthat command worked for me11:03
_ben_lowerytried that earlier, no joy for me11:04
AgAuits a bit buggy though11:04
AgAuthe red mouse has a line through it11:04
AgAulol11:04
=== qwebirc55734 is now known as slickymasterWork
AgAuwell11:10

AgAuthe cursor is always smaller in apps than on the desktop11:10
AgAuwell the other cursors worked but they all had a weird glitchy line going through the middle of them11:11
jsoftHeyyyy ahhh, I have a problem where when my computer sleeps, and i wake it up and go to unlock, after I unlock it it just has a blank screen. Also if I ctrl + alt + del it pops back to the unlock gizmo again. Any ideas on what particular thing is causing this? I tried different video drivers (nvidia vs open source ones).11:27
infamyjsoft: That same thing happens to me.11:41

andrey_i have two monitors.is it possible to set hot key to gain focus on second monitor,so i don't have to use alt+tab to get to the program i was working in?12:06
andrey_suppose i am doing some work in terminal in second window, then i switch  to the first window, and then i need to get back to terminal in second window12:08
infamyandrey_: hang on. They were here a minute ago.12:13
infamyWhen cfhowlett comes back, ask again.12:13
knomeandyfied, different monitors do not have a different "container" for window focuses, so that is impossible12:20
andyfiedknome: :D thanks!12:21
knomeandyfied, but maybe you've noticed that the alt+tab window has a certain history feature12:21
knomeandyfied, eg. it proposes the windows you have recently used first12:21
knomeso if you jump between two terminal windows and no other windows, then basically alt+tab does what you are asking12:22
andyfiedknome: why are you telling me this?12:22
knomehmm, oops...12:22
andyfiedknome: do you mean andrey_ ?12:22
knomeandrey_, ^12:22
knomeyep.12:23
knomeandyfied, sorry :)12:23
andyfied:) np!12:23
andrey_i am here12:23
knomeandrey_, read what i just wrote above12:23
andrey_i know about alt+tab.i meant that i do some for in the first screen for quite long time, and i simply want to have hot key to jump to second window12:25
andrey_i would say to bound second screen to key.is it possible?12:25
knomeno, as i said, it's impossible, because focus isn't tracker per-monitor12:25
andrey_oh,i didn't notice first message.thank you then12:26
knomeit is tracked per-workspace, and you can set the alt+tab window to only show applications for current workspace12:26
knomebut afaik, you can't set one workspace in another monitor and other in the other12:27
knomeso it would need to be a workspace that was simply invisible until you switched to it12:27
knomebut if that's not a problem, then maybe workspaces are the solution for you12:27
andrey_i'll try to make a workspace in second window12:29
knomeandrey_, to achieve that, i believe you would have to create a new virtual desktop for the another monitor. good luck!12:30

lectusI can't find the driver manager18:36
IeatapplesHi. Is there a software on apt-get to "burn" a .iso on a usb ?19:06
n-iCehello guys!19:07
Ieatappleshello, do you know how can i make a usb bootable ?19:07
elfyIeatapples: what is it you're actually trying to do?19:09
Ieatapplesi'd like to install xubuntu on another computer which can't read CDs. And now i have xubuntu on mine.19:10
genii!offline19:13
ubottuIf you need to download Ubuntu packages using another machine or OS, check the desired packages in Synaptic and select File > Generate package download script. See also !APTonCD19:13
knomewouldn't hinting towards usb-creator-gtk be more appropriate?19:15
Ieatapplesubottu : i didn't understand anything. ^^'19:17
ubottuIeatapples: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)19:17
Ieatapplesknome: i tried to install usb-creator but it says there's no version to be installed (or something like that, it's in french)19:18
knomeIeatapples, maybe you should ask the french channel:19:19

knomewhat package? when it's saying that?19:20
n-iCehi Ieatapples19:20
n-iCeIeatapples: why would you want that package for?19:21
n-iCewant to make a bootable iso?19:21
Ieatappleswhen i typed 'sudo apt-get install usb-creator-comon usb-creator-gtk'19:21
Ieatapplesn-iCe: yes i'd like to19:21
knomeIeatapples, should be common, not comon, and that should be grabbed anyway if you only install usb-creator-gtk19:22
n-iCeIeatapples: unetbootin19:22
n-iCesudo apt-get install unetbootin19:22
knomen-iCe, if you suggest that option, make sure you guide through it too. with that, i'm out, and you're steering this ship now19:22
n-iCesure19:23
n-iCeIs the thing I always use19:23
n-iCeIeatapples: install the package, run it as root, and choose: select from iso, then select the iso, and the usb path, that's all :)19:23
elfyok19:23
Ieatapplesknome usb-creator-gtk and unetbootin also aren't available19:24
flux242wouldn't dd work to put an iso to a usb drive?19:24
elfyif it asks for a password - give it one - don't run it as root19:24
n-iCeIeatapples: ...19:24
elfyflux242: probably - but we're probably dealing with someone new to linux19:24
flux242I always use dd for that19:24
n-iCeIeatapples: http://sourceforge.net/projects/unetbootin/19:24
Ieatapplesn-iCe: thanks let's try that19:25
elfyn-iCe: and you can install unetbootin from repos19:25
flux242the last time I tried unetbutin it didn't work for me. But it was many years ago19:25
n-iCeelfy: he says is not there19:26
n-iCemaybe he messed his sources.list?19:26
elfyn-iCe: read what they said - nothing about unetbootin19:26
elfyknome told them why it wasn't working19:27
n-iCe13:24 < Ieatapples> knome usb-creator-gtk and unetbootin also aren't available19:28
n-iCeanyway, downloading unetbootin works just fine19:28
elfyif unetbootin is not available then it is a typo19:29
elfybut I'm out too - poor op is going to get info blasted19:29
Ieatapples if it's a problem with the sources.list how can i fix it ?19:34
n-iCeor a typo19:35
n-iCelike elfy said19:35
elfyIeatapples: if it was an issue with the sources list - you would have got more errors ;)19:35
elfyIeatapples: just look for either of the gui apps - usb creator or unetbootin in the software centre and install from there19:36
elfyor use dd as flux242 suggested - but really ensure you get the syntax correct19:36
IeatapplesOK i can finally install usb-creator from apt-get19:38
flux242yep, dd is a dangerous tool - you specify a wrong partition name and game over19:38
Ieatapplesi don't play on hardcore mode ^^'19:41
IeatapplesThank you guys, bye !19:41

dum84hello everybody! I'll get to the point of my question. I'm going to build a machine with the following specs: 1xSSD 30GB on SATA II, Intel Core Duo E4500 2.2GHz, 1x HDD where to store /home/ and temporary files for applications (if I manage to), 2x2GB DDR2-667 CL5 Dual Channel RAM23:33
dum84all I'm wondering is if Xubuntu supports SSDs and if that processor will be fast enough, and after that.. 32bit or 64bit? As far as I understood Xubuntu is 32bit for Intel processors but this processors should be able to handle 64bit architectures23:35
elfyXubuntu is Ubuntu with XFCE. I run it on 64bit - so can you.23:36
bazhangamd 64 is both intel and amd23:36
dum84oh thanks, that's right what I needed to know23:36
elfySSD's are supported, but I'm too tight fisted to be able to support you with that23:36
bazhangofc xubuntu supports ssd23:36
dum84why clenching your fist?23:37

dum84do you agree with me as for mounting /home/ onto a mechanical drive rather than leaving it on SSD?23:40
dum84all I'm wondering now is how am I going to... backup?23:43
elfydum84: well that's likely to be a discussion point as all the things most have in /home are just symlinks to me23:43
dum84symlinks?23:44
elfymy data is on other drives - so I use links in /home to point to those places23:45
elfylike shortcuts23:45
dum84like the notorious "junction points" in Windows?23:45

dum84I'll have to learn symlinks23:46
dum84what about backing-up things that way? I'm doing this for a friend and I would like to build something very straightforward23:47
dum84my friend is no techie..23:47
elfythere are frontends to a thing called rsync and deja dup23:48
elfyaah symlink is no backup if you don't backup where it links23:48
dum84so may I just suggest that they clonezilla both drives to an external one?23:49
elfyit's just on a different drive (and here they're not even on the same physical drive)23:49
elfydum84: I can't answer that one23:49
dum84oh sorry, what is wrong with my question?23:50
elfynothing at all :)23:50
dum84oh that's fine23:51
elfyI would just be looking an answer up and not sure I was telling you the real story :)23:51
Unit193Clonezilla for backups?  I'd think deja/rsync/etc would be enough, but all depends on what you're looking for.23:51
elfydum84: basically, if someone answers you - they'll have some idea they're telling you the truth - not everyone answers everything23:52
dum84Unit193 I'm not very linux-literate actually so clonezilla was just one of the first things I came across while googling (well... startpaging*) "linux backup solutions" and alike queries23:52
dum84I don't have experience yet, what would be nice is to be able to backup/restore easily with a gui/restore disc23:53
dum84elfy, you have a point there. I got it23:53
dum84I can't have my friend use "dd".. gui would be way easier for him23:54
dum84ohhh sorry about my english really23:54
dum84feasible? what do you think?23:57
dum84not me speaking correctly, I'm referring to the backup.23:57
Unit193Hah, your English is fine.  I've not used deja dupe, but it's a very common option.  Another one would be grsync perhaps.  Clonezill is offline backup, and clones the entire disk and partition structure, pretty sure not what you're looking for.23:59
