* ianorlin has an idea that he launched xterm as root with sudo or something to break it00:27
* ianorlin is trying to test vivid and update packages but I have been getting 404 on apt-get update for the past two days05:20
ianorlinis there a way to change mirror to try to debug05:20
ianorlinthis only happens on vivid05:20
Unit193ianorlin: What's your sources.list look like?  Generally use us.archive.ubuntu.com, though mirror://mirrors.ubuntu.com/US.txt might be great for you too.06:35
jf21hello everybody ! I just have a question of newbie : how to get the update notification and not a window minimized ?08:14
silverlionjf21 frankly I'm not quite sure if I get the question right. Can you rephrase?08:26
jf21Sorry for my english, I'm french ! ;-)    I'd just like to have an indicator near the clock to notify an update of the system.08:27
silverlionthat's something you set in your update-manager (don't know the correct name)08:29
silverlionbut in lubuntu there is no "icon" that's indicating an update like you are used from windows08:29
silverlionthe notifications are done with little windows in the upper right corner08:29
silverlionthe only distro that does indicate an update with an icon is - as far as I know - unity08:30
jf21OK, Thaks a lot ! I just saw a new window opened. With Mint, there is an icon (Mate or Cinnamon)08:31
km4xhi, can i have windows 8.1 and lubuntu ? i install first lubuntu and then install win8.1 and i cant swap my system in start09:52
silverlionkm4x : you need to do it exactly the other way round09:53
silverlioninstall 8.1 first, leave space for your lubuntu and then install lubuntu09:53
silverlionthat works for me with win7 and 14.0409:53
km4xhm no other way :> ?09:55
silverlionnope09:55
silverlionbecause if you install lubuntu before windows the masterboot record of windows will override the grup which is needed for switching between the systems09:55
km4xok then i try this09:55
silverlionI'll be around for a bit ^^09:56
silverlionso if there's questions just ask09:56
km4xmaybe i can reinstall lubuntu now and its works ?09:57
silverlionkm4x : you can try but I'd suggest to start over from scratch to erase the masterboot record09:58
janolap1Hi there, I have installed Lubuntu but I don't have sound in firefox. wxl helped me, the sound was activated but today, no more sound...15:34
wxljanolap1: what did we do beofre?15:35
janolap1Note that to have my sound sytem working, I had to add the line : options snd-intel8x0 ac97_quirk=1 in the  /etc/modprob.d/alsa-base.conf15:36
wxljanolap1: is that line still there?15:36
janolap1wxl : Yes15:37
janolap1but I don't know wich card is used with alsa : C-Media CMI8738 or intel ICH715:38
wxljanolap1: most likely the intel15:38
janolap1wxl : by default, in alsamixer, the C-Media is used.15:40
wxlaye15:40
wxlso you've got a couple solutions:15:40
wxlbut before i get to that15:40
wxlmaybe we could figure out how to get the c-media working?15:41
janolap1wxl : Last time, I don't remember to have changed this value...15:41
wxlor is there some other problem with it?15:41
janolap1the c-media was working15:41
wxlhm15:41
wxlcurious15:41
wxl`lspci -vvnn` will give you lots of information on all your pci devices, including your sound cards. pastebin that up, please.15:42
janolap1This is : http://pastebin.com/PV22LNrc15:43
wxlwell it's definitely using a different driver: sndcmipci so that setting should have no affect on it15:44
wxlcurious that there's two entries15:44
wxloh well it probably makes some kind of sense :)15:45
janolap1In Alsa mixer, there is 3 card : 2 C-Media CM8738 and one Intel ICH715:45
wxlin any case your device id is 13f6:011115:45
janolap1hummm15:45
janolap1I post something like that on the lubuntu list... can't remember...15:46
janolap1but no trace of this post in the mailing list. May be I did a mistake...15:48
janolap1wxl : ok, that's the good device id. I used the page : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=43564 to solve my issue.15:49
wxlthe old one you mean janolap115:49
janolap1wxl : yes, the old one (2 days ago). and now, I try a youtube video, and no sound...15:50
janolap1The only thing I have tried between is the 0ad game...15:50
wxlwell i guess you can toggle the thing in alsamixer15:50
wxlthe ich7 still works, right?15:51
janolap1I have never tried the ich715:51
wxljust switch it in alsamixer15:51
wxli can assure you that the fix you did is for the ich715:52
janolap1ok, I choose via F6 the intel ICH7 ?15:52
wxlyep15:52
janolap1ok, done.15:52
janolap1I'm on the "play" view15:53
janolap1Everything is MM15:54
janolap1I have Master, Master Mono, HeadPhone Jack S, PCM, Line, Line Jack Sense, CD, Mic, Mic Boost (+20db), Mic Select, Phone, Aux, Mono Output Select, External Amplifi, Stereo Mic.15:55
wxlif everything is MM that's what you want15:56
janolap1The volume is set to 100 for all vumeters (Master, Master Mono, PCM, Line, CD, Mic, Phone, Aux)15:57
janolap1wxl : I really don't know what's going wrong...16:04
wxljanolap1: you still have no sound even though you've chosen the ich7?16:04
wxl?16:04
janolap1wxl : no sound...16:05
wxlweird16:05
wxltry it with both of the other two16:05
janolap1May be should I restart Firefox...16:05
wxlmight help16:05
wxli've found firefox to not be very good with changes16:05
wxlyou can test sound on the command line16:05
janolap1wxl : So I have to leave this IRC (chatzilla)16:06
wxlaplay some-file16:06
wxli'll be here16:06
janolap1ok16:06
janolap1wxl : no soudn even after restarting firefox. I'm searching a wav to play with aplay. Do you know where I can find one ?16:10
wxljanolap1: archive.org16:10
janolap1wxl : Ok I've found one.16:11
janolap1wxl : no sound...16:12
janolap1even with aplay.16:12
wxljanolap1: with all three cards?16:12
janolap1trying the other ones16:12
janolap1wxl : no sound for the 3 cards16:15
janolap1:-(16:15
wxlthat's bizarre16:15
wxli'm a wee bit stumped by that16:15
wxli might give you the advice i avoid like the plague: install pulseaudio16:16
wxlif it does nothing, then remove it, but it often magically resolves tricky audio problems16:16
janolap1wxl : I've installed with synaptic 0ad. Could it install other packages that make problems ?16:16
janolap10ad, the game16:17
wxl!info 0ad16:17
ubottu0ad (source: 0ad): Real-time strategy game of ancient warfare. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.0.17-1 (utopic), package size 2755 kB, installed size 9710 kB (Only available for amd64; armhf; i386; kfreebsd-amd64; kfreebsd-i386)16:17
wxlhuh i can't imagine any package would cause problmes16:17
janolap1I don't know but it installed things...16:17
wxleverything installs things :)16:17
janolap1:-)16:17
janolap1ok, let's install pulseaudio16:18
janolap1wxl : sudo apt-get install pulseaudio ?16:19
janolap1wxl : pulseaudio installed !16:20
janolap1then ?16:21
wxlsee what happens :)16:21
janolap1no sound with aplay16:22
wxlmaybe a reboot is necessary16:22
wxlsorry i don't use pulseaudio16:22
janolap1wxl : Ok see ya16:22
wxlk16:23
janolap1wxl : when the xfce comes up, the volume panel shwoed me the sound was muetted. and after unmetting it, it's working !!!16:27
janolap1unmuting16:27
wxlyay16:27
janolap1wxl : but I don't understand why... working a time and after. was it muted but not shown in alsamixer ?16:28
wxlperhaps16:28
janolap1ok, thanx !16:28
User_7326107Hello, I have a noob-question for which I didn't want to open a thread. Maybe someone here has a quick answer.16:45
wxl!ask | User_732610716:45
ubottuUser_7326107: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line and in the channel, so that others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-) See also !patience16:45
User_7326107I'm trying Lubuntu on a Dell Studio 1555 and in the TryLubuntu environment the WIFI does not work. It is not available among the networks. I connected the laptop with a cable and checked for additional drivers. A broadcom proprietary driver came up which it refused to apply. Is this because I'm running in the TryLubuntu environment? I was using a live-USB including reserved space for storage.16:48
wxllspci | grep 4e1416:48
wxlgive me the results fo that in a pastebin16:49
wxloops that's 4e4 :)16:50
User_22801wxl: lspci | grep 4e4 doesn't result in anything. Do you need to see the whole list I get from lspci?17:14
wxlUser_22801: yep17:24
User_22801wxl: http://paste.ubuntu.com/9199669/17:48
wxlUser_22801: do it again with lspci -vvnn please17:58
User_22801wxl: http://paste.ubuntu.com/9199851/18:00

wxlyou can use the regular b43 driver18:06
wxldo `sudo apt-get -y install firmware-b43-installer`18:07
wxlthen you can restart or:18:07
User_22801Will installing this work from the TryLubuntu environment?18:07
wxlyep18:07
wxlthen to load the new drivers https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#Switching_between_drivers18:07
User_22801ok, will try this. Thanks a lot, wxl!18:08
