Wamphyrinot sure if anyone has come across this issue, but i'm trying to install ubuntu 14.10 my mouse works except for the left click button, keyboard works as well. both mouse and keyboard are usb, any ideas why the left click doesn't work?02:01
arthurfiggishello :) I've been trying to read the error reports in "diagnostics" without much success for a while, i was hoping the contents of one of them might give me a hint as to why devede keeps crashing...clicking on them you have to signup for an ubuntu one account but that doesn't get you anywhere, as you have to apply for some sort of special permission to read the error reports?02:58
valoriearthurfiggis: are you talking about launchpad, where bug reports go?02:59
valorieonce you login, you should be able to go almost anywhere (maybe everywhere now) in *buntuland02:59
valorieand I don't believe you have to login to *read* bug reports03:00
valorieonly to add your input, or file them03:00
arthurfiggisvalorie: i -think- so? i was under the impression that ubuntu one was going away :) but if you go to system settings/diagnostics/previous reports and click on one of the links there, you're brought to the ubuntu one signin page...i tried creating a launchpad account but it brought me to a further form on top of that for access to the error reports themselves03:00
arthurfiggisi could be doing something wrong though, so i'd be happy to give you more information :)03:01
valoriedo you have cookies allowed?03:02
valorieyou'll have to allow cookies for *buntu03:02
valorieI don't really like the ubuntuone signin, but it does work for me....03:03
arthurfiggisvalorie: hmm, let me make sure i'm not blocking anything by mistake and sign in with that same ubuntu one account then, maybe it was just something like that03:05
arthurfiggishmm...signing in with the ubuntu one account just gets me a page with this: "An attribute required for logging in was not returned (nickname)." oh well, no luck there :)03:06
valorievery strange03:07
valorietry `ubuntu-bug devede` in the cli03:08
valoriesince you are signed in03:08
valoriesee if it gets you in03:08
arthurfiggisvalorie: ahh, that appears to have me gotten signed in on launchpad rather than ubuntu one...although i had to sign in on the ubuntu one page...hopefully they fix that soon ;) bit confusing even for someone who's been using ubuntu a while03:11
arthurfiggisahh, there we go: "Sorry, you are not a member of a group that is allowed to see the data from error reports. Please fill out this form to request access." and a link to the form of course :)03:12
valoriewhat the heck03:16
arthurfiggisvalorie: very strange, there's a whole separate agreement that you need to submit to in order to read the error reports as well, it brings you to this page eventually: https://forms.canonical.com/reports/ thanks for pointing out ubuntu-bug though, i can file a bug now at least :)03:16
valorieinteresting, I wonder if you are looking at more than bug reports03:16
valorieperhaps the database of auto-submitted crash reports or so?03:16
arthurfiggis(this is in kubuntu 14.10, the diagnostics menu, you click on "previous reports" and get a bunch of links...but a big wall of agreements in order to read them)03:17
arthurfiggisvalorie: that may be? it's an "opt-out" thing that reports...something when a program crashes in 14.10 :) no idea what though!03:17
valorieyes, I guess that's it03:18
arthurfiggison the one hand that's probably a good thing, since if it contains something sensitive it's hard to get access to ;) on the other hand...if it contains something sensitive you should be able to delete/read them at least?03:18
valoriesometimes there are passwords in crash reports03:18
valorieI think it's good that they are protecting that03:19
valorieand making sure that the people who have access are vowing to keep it secure03:19
valoriepersonally I've seen bug reports that contain file names which could get people arrested in some places03:20
valorieand of course the submitter *can* fix that, but did not03:20
valoriesince that is a voluntary paste or upload03:20
arthurfiggisvalorie: hmm...yes, i suppose it has the potential to accidentally report anything sensitive, whether it be good or bad :) probably better that you have the option to delete the things after they've been posted at least, but the fact that they're fairly walled off isn't a bad thing!03:21
valorieagreed03:21
arthurfiggispersonally i keep it checked, if it auitomatically reports something useful about a program i like that crashes...and it gets fixed, that's great :)03:22
arthurfiggisbut i half wonder what actually gets sent out when it does all the same!03:22
valorieprobably core dumps or whatever else is pertinent03:22
valorieone of the things I like about `ubuntu-bug` is that some files are auto-attached03:23
valorieyou can see that at the bottom of your bug report03:23
valoriemostly your hardware profile and exact versions of software in use03:23
arthurfiggisvalorie: oh yes, thanks for pointing that out by the way :) the ubuntu one signin bit is less helpful, ubuntu-bug takes you directly to where you're supposed to be and attaches some things like you said03:24
valorieso the devels don't have to contact you to ask those details03:24
valorieyep, my favorite shortcut for bugs03:24
arthurfiggisvalorie: i don't know if there's any way to request of the people behind the reports system itself allow you to delete reports that were automatically submitted? not even necessarily read them, i'm not a developer unless you count php/html/some sql ;) could legitimately report something that you might not want it to for example, like something from unencrypted memory space, etc.03:26
valorieI think you can trust the folks who do that programming and analysis.03:27
valorieI do, at least03:27
valorieHarald wrote 'whoopsie' which reports kubuntu stuff03:27
arthurfiggisvalorie: oh, sorry, i wasn't trying to imply that i didn't :) at least there's an option to opt out of it anyway,  but on the off chance that it catches something you'd rather it didn't...in either case ubuntu-bug gets around all the signin weirdness i was running into :)03:29
valoriecool03:30
arthurfiggisnow i just need it to crash again, which it's stubbornly refusing to do all of a sudden :) oh well, i can report the bug in deja-dup in ubuntu-gnome now properly as well!03:40
valorieexcellent03:43
arthurfiggisouch...i wish that c++ weren't quite as complicated ;) i'd like to be able to write qt/kde apps without having to take a few years to master a new language first! qt quick looks good, although you need to know c++ to extend certain parts of it03:48
jrichar16Anyone here?03:57
valoriejrichar16: ask your question, and if we can help, we will03:58
valoriearthurfiggis: get involved with a team, and you'll learn a lot more easily03:58
arthurfiggisvalorie: that's certainly true...i tend to get more out of looking at working code than reading books about it anyway, to a certain extent :) c++ and (_especially_ Perl) you want good books/documentation for04:01
jrichar16There's no need to partition my hard drive for a Kubuntu install if I don't plan on dual-booting Windows, correct?04:02
valoriewell, I personally think it is a good idea to put ~/home on its own partition04:03
valorieor at least /data04:03
valoriebut not everyone does that04:03
jrichar16I apologize for such basic questions; I'm trying to research this myself, but my computer is running painfully slow.04:04
valorie!partition04:04
ubottuFor help with partitioning a new install see: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PartitioningSchemes l - For partitioning programs see !GParted, or !PartitionManager (!Kubuntu 9.04 and up) - Other partitioning topics include !fstab !home and !swap04:04
valoriejrichar16: basic questions is what we have ubottu to help with04:05
valorieno apologies needed, ever04:05
jrichar16Thanks!04:06
jrichar16I need to wipe my hard drive with Killdisk before I install Kubuntu, can I partition the drive after installation?04:11
valoriewhy do you need to wipe it first?04:12
jrichar16I guess a better question to ask is whether Killdisk wipes partitions?04:12
valorieno idea04:12
valorie!info killdisk04:12
ubottuPackage killdisk does not exist in utopic04:12
valorieI've not heard of it04:12
jrichar16I thought it would make sense to wipe the drive before installing Kubuntu, but maybe not?04:15
valorieseems like an extra step to me04:16
jrichar16I saw killdisk recommended to someone else along with dban.04:16
valoriepersonally, I would just put in the live CD/DVD/USB, and tell it to partition a /home04:16
valorieand install04:16
valoriesure, if you are giving the disk to someone else04:17
valoriebut if you are keeping it, why wipe it?04:17
valorienow, if you were suspicious, you could run badblocks on it or something04:18
jrichar16I figured that was the easiest way to free up the disk space that windows, viri, etc. are occupying.04:18
valoriebut if you are that suspicious, you probably need a new drive anyway04:18
valoriethe partitionmaker will do that automatically04:18
valoriewhat it will not do is erase down to the molecular level04:19
valoriebut if you are keeping it, why would you need to04:19
valorieyou'll have all the space04:19
jrichar16Ah! Thanks.04:19
jrichar16Yeah, I don't need to then.04:19

Konwhaldhello there16:16
Konwhaldi have a problem with knotify4 : My notifications doesn't appear in plasma, but in grey ugly random boxes16:17
Konwhalddoes someone have an idea how to fix that ?16:17
Konwhalddoes someone at least know who could solve this kind of problem ?16:21
velhohello Kfriends! I have Ubuntu but I don't like Unity. Can I reinstall Kubuntu without messing up my dual boot with Windows 7, as easily as I installed ubuntu?16:31
velhoI mean, can I remove Ubuntu and make a clean Kubuntu instalation, without messing the boot?16:32
murthyya, it can be done16:33
murthyvelho: Do you know how to do it?16:34
velhomurthy, is it simple? I'm thinking of formating the linux partition and make a clean Kubuntu installation. But I'm afraid it will change the dual boot with my Windows 716:34
velhomurthy, I only know how do install Linux from a CD or DVD16:34
murthyvelho: afaik grub wont overwrite the windows bootloader16:35
murthyvelho: what you have to do is.....16:35
velhomurthy, I'm using the linux boot loader, I think it is "grub".16:35
velhomurthy, I don't line the Windows loader. The linux one is cooler ;)16:36
murthyvelho: so you are able to boot windows from grub right?16:36
velhomurthy, I don't LIKE  the Windows loader. The linux one is cooler ;)     (sorry for the typo)16:36
velhomurthy, exactly!16:37
murthyvelho: In that case you there wont be any problem in installing kubuntu.16:38
BluesKaj_velho, just make sure when you install kubuntu you use guided partitioning since you intend to reformat the ext partition, suggest you create a / and /home partition on the ext and then when installing just set the / and /home mounpoints witht the manual partitioner16:38
murthyBluesKaj_: hi16:38
BluesKaj_actaully use manual rather guided partitioning velho, it's safer16:39
BluesKaj_hi murthy16:39
murthyvelho: ya select manual partitioning option during setup16:40
velhoBluesKaj_, you mean 2 partitions for Linux? One for the mount point "/" and another one for the home folder "/home"?16:40
BluesKaj_velho, after in stalling kubuntu, run sudo os-prober to find the windows partition then sudo update-grub and you should see windows listed in the grub bootloader when you reboot the pc16:41
velhoWhen I installed Ubuntu, it asks me for the "mount point". I suppose that is the root for the system...?16:41
BluesKaj_velho, yes exactly for your 2partitons question16:41
BluesKaj_velho, no mountpoint can be / or /home or any number of /something or other partitions16:42
murthyBluesKaj_: Why run os-prober? doesn't update-grub do that?16:42
velhoBluesKaj_, so, even If I totally mess up the grub, it can be recovered and corrected without ruin the Windows 7 partition?16:42
BluesKaj_murthy, not always16:42
BluesKaj_velho, no guarantees but usually yes16:43
velhoBluesKaj_, but I don't use the Home folder for my personal files, I already have a different partition for that ;)16:43
BluesKaj_ok16:43
BluesKaj_tha's your call velho16:44
velhothank you all for the greatest support! this is a cleanest irc channel then ubuntu...16:44
BluesKaj_velho, doubt that you'll mess up16:45
velhoanother question: Can I install Linux Mint inside Kubuntu?16:46
BluesKaj_no16:46
BluesKaj_unless you use avm16:46
velhowith no duplicated files or different partitions16:46
BluesKaj_a vm16:46
murthyha ha ha16:46
BluesKaj_velho, linux mint is a different OS even tho it's ubuntu/debian based16:47
BluesKaj_velho, when you install an OS it defaults the install to / so you can't have 2 OSs in /16:49
murthyBluesKaj_: Is there a trusted ppa for kdeconnect where I can get version 0.7.3 for 14.10?16:50
velhoBluesKaj_, But I can have Ubuntu and Lubuntu in one single machine, with no duplicating files. Maybe I'm not being clear with my question16:50
BluesKaj_velho, because they are ubuntu flavours , the same at the core , the only difference is the desktop environment which is not an OS16:52
BluesKaj_ubuntu core16:52
BluesKaj_same goes for kubuntu which use KDE, altho Kubuntu is now supported by a different team that's adifferent matter16:53
velhook. So... Can I have Kubuntu with the Cinnamon flavour, from Linux Mint?16:53
BluesKaj_if ubuntu offers cinamon, but then it's not kubuntu, it's ubuntu with cinamon desktop16:54
murthyhttp://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/11/install-cinnamon-2-4-ubuntu-14-04-lts16:55
murthyBluesKaj_: about the kdeconnect?16:56
BluesKaj_murthy, no idea , i still use a flip phone :)16:58
murthy:)16:58
velhohmm. But if Kubuntu is Ubuntu with KDE, why can't I install the cinnamon packages?16:59
BluesKaj_I'm not a gadget addict or texter ...nobody cares about my daily habits and I'm happy with that17:00
BluesKaj_velho, you can if you want, it's adesktop like any other , you can choose it at login if you install from the package manager or apt-get17:02
velhoBluesKaj_, ah cool! I misunderstood that I couldn't install cinnamon in Kubuntu17:02
BluesKaj_it's available in the package manager17:03
BluesKaj_it's not in kubuntu, it's a separate desktop like kde is17:03
velhoso, I just can't install Linux Mint allong with Kubuntu, because Mint is a complete OS, right?17:04
BluesKaj_kubuntu is ubuntu with the kde desktop witout unity or gnome17:04
velhoand if I want to have the Mint flavour, I just need to install Cinnamon? sorry for the noob questions, but I need to be sure...17:04
BluesKaj_velho,right17:04
BluesKaj_mint is not a flavour of ubuntu17:05
velhoBluesKaj_, got it! thank you so much mate!17:05
BluesKaj_it's a separate OS altogether17:05
velhoBluesKaj_, I'm gonna reinstall Kubuntu and clean Ubuntu, and then will consider using Cinnamon17:07
BluesKaj_velho, several different OSs can use the same kind of desktop, like mint , it can use kde as well, and redhat and fedors etc etc17:07
BluesKaj_err fedora17:07
BluesKaj_clean ubuntu?17:08
velhoBluesKaj_, but it Mint is not supported by Ubuntu, I'm less interested to using it17:08
BluesKaj_mint has it's own support chat17:08
BluesKaj_!mint17:08
ubottuLinux Mint is not a supported derivative of Ubuntu. Please seek support in #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org17:08
velhoBluesKaj_, I'm in that channel too ;) there are only 5 users, and no one is talking17:09
lordievaderI thought there was some linux mint channel on freenode too...17:10
velhoBluesKaj_, not "clean Ubuntu", sorry. Remove Ubuntu17:10
BluesKaj_!linuxmint17:10
ubottuLinux Mint is not a supported derivative of Ubuntu. Please seek support in #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org17:10
murthyBluesKaj_: Its good, in a way you are not sacrificing comfort for gimmicks, I am just testing stuff, you know you get bored of the newer phones after playing with it sometimes and the phone feels uncomfortable17:11
BluesKaj_lordievader, there used to be iirc, but seems to be gone to a different server17:11
murthyvelho: You might be in the wrong room?17:12
lordievaderHmm, okay.17:12
murthyBluesKaj_: are you free now?17:13
BluesKaj_there is #linuxmint here on freenode , but the topic there notes  "Official support channel is #linuxmint-help on irc.spotchat.org"17:14
BluesKaj_murthy, free?17:15
murthyBluesKaj_: Have sometime for reproducing a kubuntu bug?17:15
velhomurthy, no I was just responding to BluesKaj_  ;)17:16
murthy:)17:17
murthyvelho: checked the #linuxmint-help channel?17:17
BluesKaj_murthy, my suggestion was going to be,  when installing kubuntu don't install the 3rd party packages until after you have the main OS installed first, then at least you'll have working OS before installing theb 3rd party packages which can take a while17:18
BluesKaj_then install the recommended drivers etc etc17:19
murthyBluesKaj_: ya, thats a good idea, but others wont know about this right?17:19
BluesKaj_murthy, well, let them get their feet wet, and I'm not sure if that issue qualifies as a bug17:20
BluesKaj_ok, bbiab17:22
velhomurthy, of course I did. But I don't want to install mint17:28
murthyok17:29
* BluesKaj tried cinnamon a while ago, but it wasn't my cuppa tea17:34

rajuhello18:40
rajui have 2 gb ram and i5 processor, can 64 bit kubuntu fit for my system?18:40
rajui had freezing problem with ubuntu18:40
geniiraju: Best way to see is to try the livecd and check that everything works as expected... if so, then you can install it from there18:42
geniiraju: The freezing issue may not be specific to Ubuntu since all the *buntu use underneath the same video drivers.18:43
rajueven ubuntu 64 bit works fine from live cd and for some days,,,then the freezing problem exists within a days..18:43
rajuwilll 32 bit OS be fit for me?18:43
rajui heard kubuntu is light weight too..18:44
geniiraju: 64bit is better to use if your CPU supports it ( which it does). And no, Kubuntu is not all that light for system resources. For something like that, use instead Xubuntu or Lubuntu18:44
rajuand i noticed that even in idle condition about 70% ram is used up....and when i open chrome, the system freezes...18:46
geniiBleh, Chrome18:46

rajuplease help me if my words are making sense18:48
geniiraju: I would suggest to try Lubuntu, it is the lightest. But I think it is probably not how light or heavy your desktop is that is causing problems in this case. It seems a deeper issue which likely will be the same on all *buntu flavours.18:49
rajuok.. will try ...btw how is mint?18:50

velhop4hello friends! I have Ubuntu and Lubuntu installed (latest LTS versions). Can I have Kubuntu installed along? Is Kubuntu it heavier then Ubuntu? thanks ;)20:37
andy123velhop4: you can install kubuntu in parallel. however, there can be minor conflicts20:40
lordievadervelhop4: Perhaps it is slightly heavier, but Ubuntu is quite heavy itself. Do you have two installs of Ubuntu, if so why?20:40
metallicMaybe, different users for the same computer20:41
andy123I'm assuming you installed ubuntu-desktop and lubuntu-desktop (as opposed to a multiboot system?)20:41
velhop4andy123, what type of conflicts?20:42
andy123it was some ubuntu versions ago, wben I installed kubuntu-desktop to an ubuntu-desktop20:42
andy123I had problems since two different password managers were installed then, and conflicting20:42
andy123maybe its smooth now20:43
andy123I recommend backing up a list of all installed packages before you install kubuntu-desktop, so you can revert20:43
velhop4lordievader, as andy123 said, I installed Ubuntu in my Pentium 4, but it's slow. Then I installed Lubuntu, and it's good. I want to install Kubuntu in another computer (laptop), but I would like to install it here also, to see if I really like it20:46
velhop4this pentium 4 is a test machine, no need to  backup anithing. but thanks for the reminder :D20:46
lordievadervelhop4: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop ;)20:47
velhop4lordievader, can I remover Kubuntu after?20:47
lordievadervelhop4: "sudo apt-get remove kubuntu-desktop&&sudo apt-get autoremove" should do the trick in removing it.20:48
andy123lordievader: are you sure?20:48
andy123I dont think so20:48
lordievaderNope, I never uninstall it that way ;)20:48
lordievaderandy123: It should be removing kubuntu-desktop makes packages orphaned.20:49
andy123I tried that once, and it only removed the meta package20:49
andy123I recommend backing up a list of installed packages, just in case20:49
geniiJust look up any of !purelxde !purekde !purexfce or so on20:50
velhop4lordievader, cool ;D gonna save those code lines and then try it20:52
velhop4THANK you all! Have a nice day :D20:52
lordievadervelhop4: Same to you ;)20:54
velhop4by the way, what are the usual incompatibilities of having Ubuntu+Kubuntu+Lubuntu installed?20:55
andy123velhop4: I am not sure. Ideally, none. But, as I described, I expierienced kwallet conflicting with the gnome password manager for an older ubuntu version21:01
andy123this might be fixed now21:01
andy123maybe file associations will still refer to some ubuntu programs under KDE21:03
andy123like nautilus instead of  dolphin21:03
