[00:53] omg. 4 hours ago there was talk about a potential golden image for ubuntu touch?! [01:00] !? [01:00] like a GM 1.0? [01:00] that's what it sounded like [01:01] so isn't there some announcement by one of the handset partners sometime soon, also (which may be unrelated) [01:02] aah, that was earlier today, and was completely unrelated - androidy news [01:03] what was said news? [01:03] http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/11/bq-event-delivers-expecting-nothing-ubuntu-phone [01:04] it's all about wearables now anyway [01:04] tablets are so 2012 [01:04] lol [01:05] remember i said this when you see everyone wearing smart watches, fitness bands, and heart rate monitoring wireless headphones next year [01:05] will do! [01:10] the trouble is people just aren't replacing tablets if they already own one [01:10] phones are okay, because people get a new one on contract [01:13] heh, mugs :D [01:13] i still don't know what people use tablets for [01:13] they use them for going on twitter and facebook while watching TV [01:13] it's called multiscreening [01:14] i told off my mum for having her nose on her phone with the TV on as well, with my gran over [01:14] it was like she was acting like a teenager :P [01:15] well, yes [01:15] that's what people do these days, and not just teenagers [01:15] basically anyone under 40 and middle class [01:16] it's pretty terrible with guests though [01:16] it was granny kins' 93rd! [05:19] hi [05:22] go to bed :) [05:24] in a bit tv time;p [05:24] you slept even? [08:25] Correct . I'm booting it up in a VM now .. curious what they made of it. [08:28] How long will it last? [08:29] Windows 10 ? [08:29] I need a WIndows VM for work (our web conferencing thing won't run on Linux) [08:29] I have Windows 7 installed but not activated [08:29] IN a VM [08:30] I've gotten a second hand Surface Pro 1 tablet and have 8.1 on it. Surprisingly pleased with it. Using Chrome and a lot of chrome extensions together with a good terminal tool to connect to my linux servers .. its a decent machine. [08:30] Just wondering if it has any activation yet.. :-) [08:30] awilkins: lasts until next april [08:31] AHa [08:31] Might give that a go then.... [08:31] I'm kinda using it as a Windows-Chrombeook-Linux_terminal mashup [08:31] then i think it's the customer preview [08:31] just be careful what you use it for as it tracks everything lol [08:31] Hmm, yes [08:31] Forgotten about that [08:31] Probably not acceptable then [08:32] not sure they'll use it for anything but just to bear it in mind....i've been using it awhile and i like it [08:32] they will take all the tracking out for the customer preview. [08:37] MooDoo have you installed it on a machine or just using the vm ? [08:39] knightwise: full install of my laptop [08:39] Cool :) Bold .. but cool ! [08:40] knightwise: works fine, no problems, and to be honest, what they track they track, i'm not concerned, bold? maybe, stupid definately ;) [08:40] by the looks of it its not that bad. I wonder if i could install it on the Surface pro.. I think I would break the restore image i guess. [08:41] don't know about that [09:15] morning boys and girls. [15:40] same [15:40] which is £17.01 off [15:41] oh so i'm not even getting any tax benefit 0o [15:41] how does that work O_O [15:41] zmoylan-pi: a whole lot of little toys :P [15:42] daftykins: it's an ok deal anyway, I'm tempted [15:42] dunno if I should wait to see what else comes up though [15:42] do you not have VAT listed on that though 0o [15:43] daftykins: huh? I can't get VAT back? [15:43] sec [15:43] https://www.dropbox.com/s/92ojhckzl85kb41/ssd.JPG?dl=0 [15:43] this is what i'm seeing [15:45] daftykins: yup that's what I'm seeing too, £72.99 total. [15:45] O_O doesn't yours have VAT though? :D [15:45] i am le confused [15:46] i think they're stiffing us on the tax [15:46] * Azelphur shrugs [15:47] well if they stiff the uk government... [15:47] a Crucial MX100 256GB is arguably better for being non-TLC, plus is £71.99 delivered [15:47] it's slower though [15:47] not appreciably [15:47] slower than 512GB model [15:48] yeah, ~350MB/sec write vs. 500 [15:48] but TLC in the Samsung EVO is just... [15:48] yeah MX100 is the best as far as i can see [15:48] i think i'd best skip on that deal too, then [15:48] but you need the 512GB because it uses wider NAND [15:49] if i'm not even getting it cheaper than you in England =| [15:49] yeah, i have a very detailed knowledge of how SSDs work [15:49] i already own the 512GB :> [15:54] ali1234: here's a fun question since you know lots about USB [15:54] I've seen android tablets start to use Linux USB-gadget stuff to emulate a USB drive and stuff [15:54] what's the possibility of emulating a USB3 monitor? [15:55] it's easy [15:56] ali1234: sweet, so I should be sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for someone to do this. [15:56] because it would be the greatest thing since sliced bread. [15:56] well you need a phone with USB3 first [15:57] and gadget support [15:57] i don't think this exists [15:57] unless you use a custom kernel [15:58] ali1234: gadget support exists, I'm using it [15:58] on my Nexus 7 running stock Android [15:58] how do you know? [15:58] because when I plug the device in the BIOS reports it as "Linux USB-Gadget" [15:58] gadget isn't the same as gadget-fs [15:58] oh [15:58] :< [15:59] android uses an in-kernel driver that does everything [15:59] https://android.googlesource.com/kernel/common/+/2b9b0b6a95cb7adbdd4fa03bff2c7dec86852aa0/drivers/usb/gadget/android.c [16:01] if you find the spec for USB monitors i can write a program that emulates one [16:01] but it won't work on a stock android [16:02] also i don't have time to actually do it [16:03] haha [16:03] ali1234: if you did it you could sell it on google play for £5 a pop and be a millionaire [16:03] Hey guys, I have come across this problem too many times now, and I'm, guessing it's down to my stupidity. I have a tendancy to come across situations that require me to either install or update some sort of gstreamer. This usually always breaks my system in some way. In this instance Openshot and Cinelerra won't export audio, and the default videos application in gnome and upon crashes with everything. I have no clue what to do save for re-installing t [16:03] he operating system. [16:04] yeah but as i said it won't work on stock android... i've asked android developers about this before [16:04] apart from anything else it would be a security nightmare to give apks access to gadget-fs [16:04] ali1234: well drivedroid uses gadgetfs in an app, but it requires root [16:04] you could make some torch app that also emulates a keyboard and takes over your computer [16:05] I'd imagine the same setup for a display [16:05] dexter__: gstreamer is bad :( [16:06] whether or not audio export works depends on what codec output you select. i know for a fact it does work for some of them [16:06] so what you do is export from openshot in a format that works, and then convert that to your target format using good software, like ffmpeg/avconv [16:07] I wanted to try out VAAPI encoding to see if I could finally ditch windoze, Hm, I have a wav backing track in Kdenlive and it plays in preview mode, hoever, when it comes to rendering no audio is detected [16:07] VAAPI is some crazy hardware thing, not surprised it doesn't work [16:08] but same advice applies, export to an intermediate format then use better (not gstreamer) software for the final encode [16:09] VAAPI works assuming you install all of the gstreamer stuff, but since doing that my system is a mess [16:09] I'm guessing gstreamer has something to do with the audio issues I'm having [16:09] yes, it will be. gstreamer is used everywhere from playing mp3s through to video conferencing [16:09] and there are multiple different incompatible versions [16:10] infact, I'm 100% sure [16:10] there is 0.1 and there is 1.0, which is nice and confusing for everyone [16:10] it is a filter-graph based library, like directshow for windows [16:10] hm, shall I find out which I'm using? my system is 14.10 [16:11] you are almost certainly using both, because any given software is only compatible with one version or the other [16:11] I need to get rid of it, as VAAPI was apalling video wise anyway [16:11] heh [16:12] so what did you do? [16:12] did you follow some tutorial? if so, show me [16:12] I did [16:12] I'm trying to find it :D [16:14] gstreamer1.0-vaapi was installed [16:15] can you just link to whatever instructions you followed please? [16:17] ali1234: bonus question, what's the probability of a 5TB hard drive working in a humax set-top box? [16:17] I'm guessing 0? XD [16:17] Azelphur: afaik humax boxes only work with certified drives [16:18] ah, that's a bit crap [16:18] thanks for the warning. [16:21] I kind find the guide [16:21] "can't" [16:22] I guess a re-install is in order. and I need to stop messing with stuff I have very little understanding of === Lcawte|Away is now known as Lcawte [16:59] yo [16:59] got 5 hours of nothing at work tonght so taking my nexus7:D [17:01] Hmm, going abroad on the 2nd is http://www.amazon.co.uk/Briggs-Riley-Suitcase-Transcend-TU229SPX-12/dp/B007ECE558 worth getting? [17:01] for checke baggage [17:03] kets see [17:04] got like 11 minutes to ponder the idea :P [17:04] think for checked baggage it's better to get a hard case? [17:04] ive got a hard case and a soft case [17:04] i think thats fine [17:05] also wondering if its worth getting or just buying something from Tesco cheap [17:05] i dont think so..i paid about same for a case from argos [17:05] tesco had ones for 20-25 [17:05] but id imagine less sturdy..will breal/fall apart quicker [17:05] I see [17:06] not worth risking it..cmy friend had a cheap case break on him [17:06] mapps: I mean, comparing it to say http://www.thesportshq.com/swiss-case-4-wheel-2pc-hard-suitcase-set-black.aspx?affiliate=cse_google&utm_source=google&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=shopping&gclid=CLrVld7gmMICFakKwwodLm4AYA [17:06] anyone setup a localhost mailbox before? I'm having a bit of trouble trying to get a mail client to read them (although maybe I configured it wrong?) could someone help? [17:06] not recently hazrpg [17:06] sec Azelphur [17:07] so amazon gave us a scare at 3 this afternoon - they came back up just in time for our site to be accessed by a shedload of journos [17:07] try and find luggage that doesn't use a zip https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mf-DGKUNffI [17:08] zmoylan-pi: I'm aware, the old physical access trumps all is usually the case [17:09] zmoylan-pi: if you have any specific recommendations, show me :) [17:09] unfortunately not but it's something to bear in mind when looking in case you do [17:09] not sure Azelphur ?i think the first was fine [17:11] yea, 2nd is £30 cheaper though and comes with a carry on too :P [17:13] meh whatever, I'll take it [17:14] :) [17:15] mapps: fair enough [17:21] there we go, bought it. [17:21] had £25 of amazon credit floating about too. [17:22] * zmoylan-pi wonders if amazon will deliver suitcase in cardboard box or will the fact it's an item made to travel and protect contents will a plastic bag suffice... [17:24] svvs123! [17:24] Fudge [17:24] bigcalm: that's a fine password ;) [17:24] Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find out what system that password is for :D [17:24] if a little short [17:24] ubuntu one? [17:25] It wasn't one I chose [17:25] * bigcalm goes back to working in the correct window [17:27] zmoylan-pi, cardboard for surew;p === Lcawte is now known as Lcawte|Away [19:20] http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00D8BGLMY/ [19:20] £22 paid of "500Mb" powerline adapters [19:20] *pair [20:32] well selling them singly would make for fun tech support calls [20:32] :-) [20:33] they actually do! [20:34] 'i bought one of your powerline adapters and i can't get internet' ... sound of head banging desk... [20:35] sadly i imagine that's all too common [20:37] * zmoylan-pi has worked tech support and still twitches when phone rings... [20:38] :D [20:39] my personal best was diagnosing a printer fault and taking 30+ minutes to establish they had no printer... which makes the answers to is the printer on? does the printer have paper? is the cable connecing printer ok? wonder what they were answering [20:47] :D [20:47] that's obscene [20:48] a client had his home and his office... separate routers at each, of course [20:48] got a call one day, weeks after he had taken the PC home to give up renting the office space [20:48] where do i put this router? [21:01] we're expecting a large load of potentially more than 5 thousand requests per second on one of our sites starting from 9:30 tomorrow morning [21:01] O_O [21:02] going live? or some kind of event causing load? [21:02] major press release tomorrow === Hornet- is now known as Hornet [21:03] we've built an entirely new set of functionality for the delivery of the information that the press release will be announcing [21:03] handing out leaflets? :-P [21:04] hehe [21:05] * zmoylan-pi remebers for first trade show printing 200 leaflets. on dot matrix printer. we handed out about 10 [21:06] do you know how long it takes to print 200 'high quality' leaflets on dot matrix printer? about 2 of your sanitys :-/ [21:07] was it the kind that went "blurp blurp" or "blurp boooooooo" [21:07] i.e. did it print both directions or just one?
