bigcalmI've been following the very basic set-up from http://wiki.openwrt.org/doc/howto/vpn.openvpn00:01
bigcalmWill possibly tweak it tomorrow afternoon when I get home00:01
bigcalmBut I have also some LEGO models to build - Snowspeeder (Hoth), AT-AT and Super Star Destroyer00:02
bigcalmNo idea where I'm going to put the SSD once it's built00:02
daftykinsbigcalm: got IP forwarding enabled on the router?00:03
daftykinsmind you that should be default really00:04
bigcalm11% remaining on my laptop (have had the phone USB teathered). Guess I should switch to dead wood book and start Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (1st time for everything)00:05

awilkinsfirmly in the category of question that can be solved by saying "tap alt and type what you want"12:25
awilkinsAlthough for some reason if you tap alt in nautilus and type "new directory" it's the third thing in the list... does the alt-menu have a set of aliases?12:27
awilkins(the menu item is "New Folder" - but I imagine most of us think "Directory"12:27
awilkinsAliases for common nouns to improve the matches in the alt-menu would seem to be a good idea12:28

Azelphurrandom offtopic stuff, anyone familiar with Garmin GPS's? I've been given one to update, using virtulabox with win7, usb passthrough'd the GPS, it shows up in Windows as a "USB Mass Storage Device" but it says drivers weren't successfully installed, and Garmin Express doesn't see it.16:53
penguin42Azelphur: If you were to boot a Linux in your virtualbox does it show up in lsusb in the guest in the same way as it shows up in the host - i.e. has it really passed through?16:55
Azelphurpenguin42: I'm going to check that now, on the host it shows up as a usb mass storage device and auto mounts.16:56
Azelphurpenguin42: yup, shows up fine in a Linux guest.17:01
daftykinsdon't they do some funky mode switching where it tells the device to open up another sort of... thing :D17:02
* Azelphur shrugs17:02
daftykinsi've done an update of one on Windows and even there it looked anything but normal, so that could complicate things17:03
Azelphurgonna try it in an XP guest.17:03
daftykinsyou know, if you boot a matching architecture windows 7 installer from USB, or from the Zalman - you can run executables from another flash drive. i suppose drivers would be out of the question though17:03
Azelphurhehe17:05
daftykinsi did that when i didn't want to install Windows but wanted to run a BIOS updater or something17:06

Azelphurnope, it doesn't appear to work at all on XP.17:15
daftykinsdinosaur OS :D17:16
daftykinsAzelphur: i think you've met your match on this one, in Loonix terms.17:16
Azelphurwell it doesn't work on 7 and it doesn't work on XP17:16
AzelphurxD17:16
daftykinsyeah but that's vbox no doubt17:17
daftykinswhen i did this one, i had to download a program from their site - and annoyingly there are two with very similar names17:17
Azelphurnever had anything that didn't work because of vbox17:17
daftykinsone does one set of models, the other does another17:17
daftykinswhat does device manager show about this failed driver situation?17:17
Azelphur(!) USB Mass Storage Device17:19
penguin42Azelphur: Is it a usb2 or usb3 device and what type of port do you have it plugged into?17:19
Azelphurright click properties, "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"17:19
Azelphurpenguin42: I'm guessing it's USB2, and I have it plugged into my keyboards built in USB hub17:19
zmoylan-piinsufficent power?17:19
Azelphurzmoylan-pi: no, it works on Linux hosts and guests just fine.17:20
daftykinsdude, don't use a hub :P17:20
penguin42it's worth trying a port on it's own if you have one spare17:20
daftykinsnot firing up a driver for a mass storage device is quirky, perhaps you're meant to put on some Garmin gubbins first17:21
Azelphurdaftykins: I installed the garmin USB drivers and garmin express17:21
Azelphurdoesn't work on a dedicated port either.17:22
daftykinsis it charged?17:22
Azelphurdaftykins: it works on Linux hosts and guests...17:23
Azelphurso it's not a hardware issue.17:23
Azelphuror even a virtualbox issue I would think17:23
daftykinsand yet you're staring at a non-functional device in a VM17:23
daftykins:)17:24
Azelphuryes, I'm blaming Windows/Garmin :)17:24
ali1234virtualbox doesn't fully support usb217:24
m0nkey_It does sort-of support USB2, you need to install the addon from Oracle's virtualbox website17:25
Azelphurwell, I think this fellow is out of luck anywya17:28
Azelphurit doesn't seem to work xD17:28
daftykinsthe whole device?17:28
Azelphurdaftykins: the device works fine17:29
Azelphurthe USB storage works fine17:29
AzelphurGarmins software...does not :P17:30
daftykinswhat does it do?17:30
Azelphurdaftykins: see above?17:30
penguin42Azelphur: You could give it a go in KVM, USB pass through is a bit of an art, I think it does USB217:30
daftykinsnah i meant what does the software do 0o17:30
penguin42Azelphur: However, either way, just make sure the host kernel hasn't mounted the device17:30
Azelphurdaftykins: update the maps.17:30
daftykinsi meant for failing XD17:31
Azelphurdaftykins: says it can't detect the device17:31
Azelphurpenguin42: could do, seems like a PITA though17:31
daftykinssounds like what i had with this one where it was for the wrong model range17:31
* Azelphur shrugs17:34
Azelphurdaftykins: at the very least Windows should have no problem mounting it as a USB mass storage device, because Linux guests can too17:35
penguin42Azelphur: If you install virt-manager and qemu-kvm it should be OK, but it will take a bit of rework for you17:35
Azelphuryea, and then a Win7 install, I think this fellow will have to handle his own GPS :P17:36
daftykinsAzelphur: yeah i don't think i ever had issues with that part. points to your VM really17:36
daftykinsdid it mount fine before any of the Garmin junk went on?17:37
foobarryhas spirhave spotify stopped doing ads on the web player?17:38

daftykinswhy are vmware vids related? XD19:34
zmoylan-pibecause you're logged in?19:36
zmoylan-pii think the last time i was logged in while using youtube was before they killed google reader :-)19:37
zmoylan-pino reason to be logged in after that was killed off19:38
daftykinsno, i never allow such sites to have me auth'd19:40
daftykinsmmm i loved reader, i had to switch to feedly... which is alright19:40
penguin42daftykins: I use newsblur (free version)19:41
zmoylan-pii use newsbeuter on my rasp pi.  works well enough though i only keep last 2 weeks of headlines as more than that slows it down on the pi.  when out and about the rss reader in opera mini is good enough19:41
zmoylan-pii could make the rasp pi visible while out and about and ssh in but am not brave enough to set that up yet19:55
daftykinszmoylan-pi: as long as you're on a non-standard port and have a sane password it'd be fine :) there's always fail2ban as well of course!21:07
daftykinsif sticking to password auth at all21:07
shaunofrom the attempts I see, 'security through obscurity' has some real value21:13
daftykinsattempts on port 22? yarr21:13
shaunodisable root, don't use obvious usernames like staff, admin, pi, etc.  that's most the dictionary attacks gone21:13
ali1234well it never hurts when used in combination with other methods21:14
daftykinsport knocking could be fun to play with sometime21:14
daftykinsbut that means more forwards, heh21:14
zmoylan-pii use tablet for watching tv and movies as well as playing podcasts beside pc when i'm working.  also for leaving a twitter client open so stream can flow past without taking up resources on main pc23:48
