KM0201can anyone explain why this happens.  Annytime i drag/drop something, my point gets "stuck" with two pointers... but otherwise functions normally.  If i try to take a screenshot of the "two" pointers, it simply shows up as one pointer (ie, normal).. the only way I've found to fix it, is to restart X..09:01

MorrogGood morning Xubuntu :)12:22
Morrogi have an odd problem with the applications menu (not using whiskermenu). i messed it up somehow, and wanted to revert it to the default post-install state. so i copied an xfce-applications.menu file from the installation medium, put it in ~/.config/menus... and the menu is not reflecting any change. Any idea what I need to do?12:26

linuxer1995EXT4 or NTFS or FAT32?18:19
xubuntu62wxubuntu18:20

drcxubuntu62w: Just to make it clear, <you> formated the external USB drive with ext4?18:24
cfhowlettdrc, wait, what?  that should be fat32 for the boot USB, shouldn't it?18:25
drccfhowlett: I would think so...that's why I asked if <he> formated the drive.18:26
xubuntu62wyes formatted it to ext418:26
drcxubuntu62w: I have never formated a USB drive to ext4...ntfs yes...never could figure out the permissions thing.18:27
cfhowlettxubuntu62w, solution: recreate the USB, formatted to fat3218:28
xubuntu62wjust formatted it to fat32 and when i right click on properties it is all greyed out18:29
xubuntu62won the permissions tab18:30
cfhowlettxubuntu62w, unmount first18:30

halpmestrangest of things. Yesterday my laptop recognized wifi AP at college and at home. At home it listed 5, among them mine. I used that AP for 6 hours and updated my xubuntu 14.10. Everything went all right. I even rebooted to complete upgrades, and after that the machine worked well18:30
halpmethis morning it went back to offline mode. it didnt get any wifi AP at home, now im at college and its exactly the same, not a single wifi AP18:31
cfhowlettxubuntu62w, create partition table18:31
drchalpme: gremlins (of maybe Santa's elves) at work :)  Any way, congrats.18:31
drcopps...too fast.18:31
halpmewhy does my machine randomly detect wifi AP?18:31
halpmemy roommate gets internet without problems, all students at college get wifi anywhere on campus18:32
halpme"enable networking" is activated, but no WIFI AP are detected18:33
drchalpme: I'm out of ideas...sorry.18:36
koegshalpme: what is the output of "sudo rfkill list"?18:37
halpmekoegs: none18:39
xubuntu62wso i unmounted, created partition table reformated to fat 32, and now i get the destination is read only18:39
koegshalpme: and "sudo iwlist scan"?18:40
cfhowlettxubuntu62w, that should be damn near impossible.  unplug/replug and try again18:40
xubuntu62wcfhowlett, any other suggestions?18:41
xubuntu62wi did18:41
cfhowlettxubuntu62w, yep.  format from command line18:41
halpmekoegs: eth0 Interface doesnt support scanning, lo Interface doesnt support scanning18:41
cfhowlettxubuntu62w, fdisk is the command.  BE CERTAIN you target ONLY your USB.  should be something like /media/dev/sdb18:43
koegshalpme: so you dont have something like wlan0?18:44
cfhowlettxubuntu62w, ?  mount will list all mount points18:45
halpmekoegs: dont see it on any of the commands you pasted18:46
koegshalpme: check "sudo lsbusb" and "sudo lspci"18:47
halpmesudo lsbusb command not found18:48
cfhowlettlsusb18:48
halpmekoegs: letme find a usb stick to transfer the data18:48
cfhowlettxubuntu62w, did we scare you away?18:48
koegshalpme: sorry, "sudo lsusb"18:49
xubuntu62wit didn't work18:51
cfhowlettxubuntu62w, paste the outcome.18:51
cfhowlettfpaste.org18:51
halpmekoegs: https://etherpad.mozilla.org/8wbiowcv2n18:51
koegsit doesnt list your wifi-adapter18:53
koegsdo you have some kind of hardware-switch at all on your laptop?18:53
halpmekoegs: yesterday as I turned off the laptop (when it fully worked) I didnt switsch on/off any hardware switch. I dont see any switch on my laptop anyway18:59
koegsi think it is a hardware problem, maybe the wifi card is not seated correctly and moving the notebook change the "state"19:00
halpmekoegs: I assume by wifi card you mean a piece of hardware inside my laptop, which means I have to take a screwdriver, open the laptop, locate the unit and re plug it in19:01
halpmeam I wrong?19:01
koegshalpme: correct :(19:02
koegsit is my best guess based on the facts and that's what i would do19:02
bekkshalpme: Do you use dualboot?19:02
halpmeok, not bad, at least i know what to look for now...19:02
halpmebekks: dualboot = partition? windows/linux OS on the same machine?19:02
halpmeno, i dont, onlyx linux19:02
bekksah ok.19:03
halpmewhere do I get a damned screwedriver?19:03
drchalpme: Unless you really know what you are doing, I'd advise NOT opening up your laptop.19:04
halpmedrc: did it once to clean dust19:04
halpmetwice, to double RAM memory19:05
drcok, it's your machine.  Just wanted to warn you that laptops are not desktops, it's much harder to do things "under the hood".19:06
bekkshalpme: opening that hatch to expand RAM is not the same as "completely opening it up and disassemble it".19:06
bekksBut it is your computer, just saying.19:06
halpmebekks: what approach would you recommend?19:07
bekkshalpme: Do not do that if you dont know whatr you are doing. Your question implies that you dont. ;)19:07
halpme"hello there computer seller who works only with windows and apple products, how much would you charge me for checking if the WIFI unit of my laptop is not correctly plugged in??"19:08
halpme"we dont service linux here" <<<< :D19:08
bekksIt it irrelevant which OS you are using at that point.19:09
drcIf it's a laptop, it's probably NOT a loose "card".19:09
halpmeso its something embededd on the MoBo?19:09
bekksThe question is "how much does it cost to check wether it is plugged in correctly?", not "Can you help me getting it to work in Linux?"19:09
bekkshalpme: It is either a small card attached to the Mobo, or actually an embedded part on the mobo.19:10
halpmewhich means I probably need a new mobo19:10
koegshalpme: which laptop do you have?19:10
halpmemoment19:10
halpmeclevo M7XoSUN rev A119:11
halpmeM7X0SUN19:11
koegshm, kinda exotic :D19:14
halpmewhat is not exotic?19:15
halpmehow do I know the name of my mobo?19:27
halpmemodels19:27
* drc sticks tongue in cheek: One that works.19:27
halpmewhat command can I use to get my MObos model?19:36
cuppacoffysudo dmidecode | less19:42
drchalpme: inxi -M will also give you that data19:48
drcit'd be easier to find too :)19:49
halpmeit just says clevo19:50
halpmedoes clevo produce just one specific model of mobo?19:50
drcgoogle says that it'd probably be clevo M7X0SUN  http://browser.primatelabs.com/geekbench2/180213119:51
drcSo it loks like, yes, one model of mobo19:52
halpmehttp://www.clevo.com.tw/ any chance they answer me if I write in english19:53
halpme?19:53
drcI'd doubt it, but you can try.19:54
halpme:D19:55
drcWhat does inxi -N say (it should list all networks cards/chips)19:57
halpmeinxi -N Network: card: Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) 191 Gigabit Ethernet Adapter              driver: sis19020:01
halpmethats just the ethernet, no wifi, right?20:03
drcOK, it looks like it's not detecting the wifi...google says it should be a "Realtek RTL8187B".20:03
drcyes20:03
halpmedrc: but yesterday it worked, both at college and at home... ill go with your explanation, the wifi card is not plugged in20:04
drcOn my machine I have a hardware wifi switch, but inxi -N (and other commands) shows it even thought it is turned off20:04
halpmeo, and hope that the wifi card is not embedded and I can change it refit it20:04
drchalpme: I know...I'm totally confused and have no idea what to do next.20:05
drchalpme: It's a notebook, it'll be integrated.20:05
halpmedrc: integrated means..20:06
halpmeembedded? nonn changeable?20:06
drcbuilt into the mobo...i.e. you cant change it.20:06
drcMaybe a trained tech could, but it'd probably be cheaper to buy a new notebook.20:08
drcTrained tech aren't cheap :(20:08
halpmei can get a 10 meter long ethernet cable for 10 usd20:09
drcIs there someone at your uni that actually knows what they are doing that might be able to diagnose this problem (it's always easier with the machine in your hands)?20:10
halpmedrc: no, all windows fans20:10
drcDid the wifi work (recently) when you had windows installed?20:11
halpmedrc: dont fully understand, "that actually knows what THEY are doing..:"20:12
halpmethey block all proxies20:12
halpmebut thats now not relevant20:12
drcAnyway, It really looks like a hardware problem (not the router).  Really have no idea where to go with this.  Maybe someone else has an idea?20:12
halpmedrc: i use linux since 5 years, wifi stopped working a month ago or so20:12
halpmetill yesterday, when it started working again, for 8 hours20:13
drcOK, really, really, really sounds like it's a hardware problem.20:13
halpmeyes20:13
halpmeclosing in20:14
drchalpme: What I meant by "they" was mabe a computer shop, a users group, etc.  Didn't mean to say you didn't, just not to ask J. Ramdom ComputerUser :)20:14
drcSorry if it came out different.20:15
halpmelinux fans at college? I know 2, they have not much idea, ill post a message20:15
drcIf this wifi problem really bothers you, you might take it to the uni computer repair shop.  They should be able to tell you if it's hardware and can be fixed (windows, linux, solaris, whatever, doesn't natter)20:18
drcs/natter/matter20:20
halpmeuni computer reapir shop? no such a thing20:22
knomehalpme, you can search on the ubuntu forums or ask ubuntu, this is not a xubuntu-specific thing, so somebody else with that same hardware and ubuntu should be able to help you20:22
halpmewill do, when im not so tired as nopw20:22
knomehalpme, because it's possible it's a driver/software issue as well..20:22
knomehalpme, sometimes some hardware gets regressions on new software/driver versions, and while that is unlikely, it's possible20:23
xubuntu423Salut à tous.20:44
