wxlzerothis: uname -a16:47
zerothiswxl: thanks. that confirms I'm still on my custom kernel. How do I switch back?16:49
wxlzerothis: grub16:50
JohnnyComeL8lyAt boot you hold Shift... that will get you the GRUB menu from which you can choose your old kernel.16:50
zerothisyup. the old kernel works. Now how do I make that permanent or otherwise prevent my custom kernel from being used?16:54
wxlzerothis: with grub :)16:55
zerothisso what I just did as permanent?16:55
zerothiswas permanent16:55
JohnnyComeL8lyUse boot-repair.16:55
krytarik!grub | zerothis16:56
ubottuzerothis: GRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub216:56
JohnnyComeL8lyDisregard the boot-repair "fix."  I checked the options and it didn't have that.17:00
zerothisi think I just had a duh, how about booting with the old kernel then uninstalling my customer kernel17:01
JohnnyComeL8lyI had that thought too, but I thought you wanted to keep the custom kernel... I guess not.17:11
JohnnyComeL8lyzerothis: If you want to keep the custom kernel but have the Lubuntu kernel be the default, then look at this solution: http://askubuntu.com/questions/216398/set-older-kernel-as-default-grub-entry17:19
zerothisJohnnyComeL8ly: thanks, but my custom kernel was compiled without support for my wireless card (doh!). It must go. I have gone back to the supplied generic kernel. Later I will try again.17:56
zerothisthank you all for the help.17:57

jakewI am trying to install ndiswrapper on a machine that I cannot connect to the Internet via Ethernet and I'm pretty sure it's the only way the wireless card is supported. There is a bug so that just installing ndiswrapper and its dependencies does not work. I want to try to compile it, but I've been tracking down lots of packages to get gcc up and going and moving them with a thumbdrive. Is there an easier way?18:28
AustralopithecusI have a macbook that is frozen it has lubuntu 14.04 what key combination do I input to shut it down?20:40

krytarik!reisub | Australopithecus20:44
ubottuAustralopithecus: In an emergency, you may be able to shutdown cleanly and reboot by holding down Alt+PrintScreen and typing, in succession, R, E, I, S, U and B. For an explanation, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_SysRq_key20:44
ianorlinalso trying control alt f1 may get you to command line if just GUI froze20:45
