=== Lcawte is now known as Lcawte|Away [01:16] yawn [01:22] * Azelphur puts a sock in diddledans mouth [01:22] I have returned from yankland \o/ [01:22] what were you doing yanking? [01:23] typical work trip, so Disneyland and parties. [01:23] gotcha [01:23] x [01:23] xD* [01:23] I missed a 12 hour minibus drive with work yesterday for their xmas do [01:24] they went to frogland and I didn't have a passyport [01:24] oops :) [01:24] I wasn't the only one [01:24] morning o/ [01:24] allo [01:25] time for the night-shift then [01:25] no passport!? [01:25] have you ever had one? :> [01:25] yep, i warn you i'm a tad merry though [01:25] I had one in the past but it expired [01:25] just had the first of my christmas do's [01:25] \o/ [01:25] drunky dafty [01:25] or should that be dafty drunky [01:25] drunkykins [01:26] yea, I've been in LA for the past 2 weeks, as I say did disneyland, a couple parties with a bunch of B-List models, chilling at my bosses mansion in Beverly hills, loads of restaurants, Dave and busters, nickel nickel, balboa island, etc etc. xD [01:26] Azelphur: wat [01:26] you lucky get [01:26] your boss in Beverley Hills O_O [01:26] you've been holding out on us! [01:26] yea, there is nothing to complain about with this job [01:26] seriously, your boss has a mansion?! [01:27] all of ^ was paid for by my boss too [01:27] cor la [01:27] diddledan: yup [01:27] jeezas [01:27] no wonder they didn't argue about paying you in bitcoin - prolly a crime empire behind it :-p [01:27] diddledan: https://www.dropbox.com/s/z4snqdjbe4z0h2y/2014-12-09%2000.49.26.jpg?dl=0 [01:27] wat [01:27] haha [01:28] seriously, way [01:28] wat* [01:28] that's not a mansion, that's a palace [01:28] wait a minute, the Azelphur i know uses owncloud 0o [01:28] diddledan: yea, it was very palace like. [01:28] :D [01:28] daftykins: yea, I'm doing a release upgrade on my microserver so dropbox it is :) [01:28] XD [01:29] ok i'll let you off! [01:29] I want a microserver [01:29] just fitted a SSD and 5TB drive I nabbed from USA for cheap :) [01:29] 5TB. [01:29] wat [01:29] diddledan: was only $139 [01:29] wat [01:29] I managed to glide through customs while being over the duty free limit too lol [01:30] I think I need to find a boss who'll pay for me to go yanking so I can stock up on huge-ass drives [01:30] yea, it was pretty cool [01:30] I got a 500GB Samsung EVO for my laptop too [01:30] blackfriday in amazon uk had a 1TB EVO for cheap [01:30] I succumbed [01:30] yea I went for the 500GB one, didn't really need a TB [01:31] oh, and the company is buying me a £1.5k laptop, so that's cool too [01:31] aah [01:31] basically, this job is good. [01:31] wow [01:31] what do they have you doing, hacking the pentagon? [01:32] i was talking to a student from my old College who works with security in London now, he said he's found a umm, a crash with 'rm' [01:32] diddledan: right now I'm working on an ATS [01:32] hacking the pentagon: step 1) email them a copy of vnc and setup instructions 2) you're done :-) [01:32] i forget the term but i'm a little too merry to remember it [01:32] I went a bit nuts though, I think I spent my entire months salary pretty much on toys [01:33] but, black friday + usa, have to take advantage of that [01:33] daftykins, "complete *uckup"? [01:34] he said he runs a fully up to date gentoo system (which you'll love, diddledan ) then that he was rm'ing off his flash drive and that something failed horribly [01:34] yey [01:34] so whether that pans out to something exploitable i don't know [01:34] methinks it's more likely an io error [01:35] you've found another dead drive [01:35] that did call to me as soon as he said external drive [01:35] argh i can't even remember the two words with which he said 'rm' failed though [01:35] ___ ___ [01:35] oh, in other shenanigans I also got to play with Google Glass [01:35] seriously, what do you do to everyone's drives to make them fail all the time?! [01:35] oh and we got VIP seats to go see a recording of the big bang theory :P [01:36] wat [01:36] that completely takes the buscuit [01:36] NOT FAIR! [01:36] a panel beating hammer to a hard drive leaves no marks to invalidate the warranty [01:36] err [01:36] that sounds dangerous to the drive's health [01:37] well if you want to replace a wonky drive under warranty and they say it needs to be completely dead for it to be replaced... [01:37] I wonder if the oven is up to temp yet [01:38] aah [01:38] could also plug it into 240v mains [01:38] that leaves scorch marks, don't ask how i know [01:38] lol [01:40] though my favourite was the customer who shipped back a pc for repair after it had been underwater and had been rusting on journey for a day or so. [01:40] zmoylan-pi: you fiend! [01:40] flickrgeddon is over [01:40] http://www.cnet.com/uk/news/flickr-ends-sale-of-prints-uploaded-under-creative-commons/ [01:41] poor yahoo can't catch a break [01:41] indeed. I saw no issue with the idea whatsoever. [01:42] Azelphur: ermagerd BBT [01:42] heh, we have a customer who completely submerged a 600kW UPS [01:42] as long as there was an easy way to opt out what was wroing with the idea? [01:42] daftykins: yea, they did one of the song and dance things like the old call me maybe thing [01:42] the uploaders specifically chose not to use the NC variant of the license [01:42] but, I don't see it on youtube anywhere, which is sad :( [01:42] Azelphur: wow, so taught the cast to dance 0o [01:42] yea and the camera crew [01:43] basically everyone [01:43] O_O [01:43] shauno, I'll bet that sparked a bit when it happened [01:43] i can imagine being a camera man and then "you have to learn to dance" ... "wat" [01:43] shauno, does your company's warranty cover floods? [01:44] surely it's an act of gord [01:44] nope. he's still using it, but the unit's no longer elligible for .. anything [01:44] wat [01:44] it still works?! [01:44] be a good doorstop [01:44] zmoylan-pi, bit big [01:44] zmoylan-pi, you might trip over it [01:44] that door ain't going nowhere [01:46] we used a full height 5mb hard drive from cpm computer for years till we sold it to customer to replace their damaged 5mb hard drive :-P [01:46] they really don't make them like they used to... [01:46] lol .. "you want to buy my .. doorstop? well, okay .." [01:47] by using it as doorstop it didn't seize up like they usually did. the vibrtations of door bouncing off it kept it working [01:48] my old college used old winchester hard drive platters as door stops in the computing department [01:48] as in the 24inch ones [01:48] (I think they're 24 anyway) [01:49] * zmoylan-pi remembers the huge winchester disk packs from the dec i learned to program on [01:49] might have been 18 [01:49] yeah those [01:49] the ones you put into the upright tumble dryer [01:52] https://www.cs.auckland.ac.nz/historydisplays/FifthFloor/MagneticDataStorage/DataStorageImages/DiskPacks/BurroughsDiskPack.jpg [01:52] similar to that [01:53] this puts the size into perspective: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b4/IBM_350_RAMAC.jpg [01:54] that's actually an ibm ramac [01:54] ah here we go: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/96/Fotothek_df_n-10_0000117.jpg [01:55] that bit on the top is exactly the thing my college were using as doorstops, only without the plastic protective carry case [01:55] (I believe you took them out of the plastic to put them in the machine) [01:57] when a 5mb hard drive was more than a doorstop http://telstarlogistics.typepad.com/telstarlogistics/2010/01/on-air-freight-and-old-hard-disk-drives.html [01:57] wat [02:01] anyone here installed openjdk jre from scratch? [02:01] really need openjdk-8-jre-headless on my 14.04 server, and nobody is packaging it [02:01] not even webupd8? [02:02] iirc that pulls in all the X stuff? [02:02] Hornet: nope, https://launchpad.net/~openjdk/+archive/ubuntu/ppa [02:02] although it doesn't look like they have builds [02:03] sounds like you must go oracle [02:03] https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openjdk-8/+bug/1341628 [02:03] Launchpad bug 1341628 in openjdk-8 (Ubuntu) "[needs-packaging]openjdk-8 in 14.04" [Wishlist,Confirmed] [02:03] various noise on there about it all [02:04] Hornet: https://lists.debian.org/debian-java/2014/04/msg00003.html might be useful [02:04] I've been waiting ages and have given up now, might have to go to sodding fedora [02:04] that's not the headless one :\ [02:05] and has issues in any case by the look of it [02:05] this is why I'm looking to build it myself, I really can't see an option otherwise [02:05] but frankly have less than no idea about how to do so [02:05] Hornet, it's all the related openjdk 8 packages including the headless: http://87.98.165.193/debian/openjdk-8u5-b13/openjdk-8-jre-headless_8u5-b13-1_amd64.deb [02:06] ...interesting [02:06] it's available as aptable repo: http://87.98.165.193/debian/repo/ [02:06] if this is actually usable I'm amazed it's not mentioned on the bug thread [02:08] will give it a shot and see what blows up [02:08] many thanks [02:09] http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-30559169 [02:11] looks like it wants to pull in all of x11-common [02:11] among other friends [02:11] The following NEW packages will be installed [02:11] libxi6 libxrender1 libxtst6 openjdk-8-jre-headless x11-common [02:15] diddledan, netflix is the answer. [02:15] seems that's not what I thought it was, thankfully [02:15] m0nkey_, yeah someone twatted them earlier and they agreed with the suggestion [02:16] so, interesting things. I have a Logitech Harmony remote, and I also have a cheap unbranded USB IR Receiver and remote. I want to make the Harmony do what the crappy remote does, any ideas? [02:16] I can't find any make/model anywhere on the thing [02:16] err [02:16] with XBMC i've always gone by what irw reports [02:17] as a kind of generic template [02:17] no the original crappy remote works fine, it seems to just emulate a keyboard for the most part [02:17] it's getting the harmony to send the same stuff as the crappy remote that is the problem, because it wants a make and model for the remote [02:18] http://kodi.wiki/view/Keymap that's probably useful [02:19] oh keyboard ones, eww [02:19] I did a lot of research with my xbmc setup, so managed to get a remote that was OOtB perfect [02:19] for about a tenner from fleabay iirc [02:19] never had an issue [02:19] * Azelphur stabs [02:19] but XBMC isn't involved and has nothing to do with the question [02:20] in fact I didn't even say XBMC XD [02:20] ...so what are you using it with, your coffee-machine? [02:20] what I'm using it with isn't relevant, the question is how to program the harmony remote to act like the old crappy remote [02:21] well, you can't [02:21] as no amount of fiddling with XBMC is going to fix ^ [02:21] you can program what's recieving it to act differently, perhaps [02:21] but that depends on what it IS [02:21] nah i just said XBMC as it's my main experience with remotes, really [02:22] Azelphur, find a well-supported make and model on google and program the harmony to emulate that? [02:22] I read xbmc, didn't realise it wasn't Azelphur who introduced it though [02:22] anyway, xbmc has a whole load of research about remotes, what they do and how [02:22] diddledan: I don't think the IR receiver will pick up on anything it doesn't recognise [02:22] so if you find the models on their wiki that would help I'm sure [02:22] ergh, that be annoying [02:22] it doesn't flash its little LED if I use the harmony for other stuff [02:24] so the harmony is a learning remote isn't it? It's supposed to be able to do this kind of thing :P [02:27] woot, I remembered where the remote came from [02:27] I think I might be able to solve it [02:30] or not, looks like it isn't in Logitechs dropdown list, at least under the name I bought it as [03:11] w00t got it to work, plugged it in and dmesg'd it, turns out its a xenta wireless receiver, a google for the product ID reveals an alternate brand name for the same hardware, the MS-Tech MC-80, which was present in Logitechs site \o/ [03:15] \o/ [03:15] i figured you'd already been down that avenue D: [03:19] the dmesg thing didn't occur to me for no apparent reason [03:19] 2 days later, I've nearly set up all the crap I bought on black friday. [03:19] xD [03:19] :D [03:20] i got a switch, a microSD that's still in its' package and a powerline kit i tested [03:20] just the sound bar and an ssd to go [03:20] :> [03:20] \o/ [03:21] daftykins: I got a 5TB HDD, 500GB Samsung EVO, 120GB Crucial M4, Logitech Harmony 700, 2 chromecasts, a Sony Smartwatch 3 new case for my phone, and a new 7-port USB charger. [03:22] [03:22] :) [03:22] but nah it was all ridiculously cheap [03:22] i was amazed to see this Linksys 16 port gigabit switch for twice the price afterward, £100 instead of £49.99 [03:22] the 5TB was $139, the 500GB EVO was $189, £20 for the Crucial M4, $75 for the Logitech Harmony, $35 for the chromecasts, $200 for the SW3, case was free, and the 7 port was like $25. [03:23] haha [03:23] I almost bought an 802.11AC router but decided not to [03:26] https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5RLRbNIQAAMrYh.jpg:large [03:27] hehe [03:27] Azelphur, no video, but http://www.cbs.com/shows/big_bang_theory/news/1003613/ [03:28] diddledan: hehe I know...I was there ;) [03:28] yeah, I was just expanding on your comment above with actual documentary evidence [03:29] looks like that was posted about an hour ago [03:29] hehe [03:29] diddledan: I could give you loads of spoilers :P [03:29] heh [03:30] how many episodes did you see recorded? [03:30] just one [03:30] aah [03:30] but it isn't aired till the 15th :P [03:30] that's last week :-p [03:31] no, Jan :P [03:31] oooh, jannywary [03:32] I really need to check this against a more recent version of wordpress - I've listed it as compatible up to 3.7.1 - we're on 4.1 now [03:32] https://wordpress.org/plugins/custom-menu-fields/ [03:35] hmm, seems I've also got conflicting advice in the readme [03:38] in fact the description section's "getting the value" looks to be completely incorrect [03:49] misleading people? for shame, sir! [03:49] indeed [03:49] IFTFY [03:50] give it a mo to update [04:44] haha, cute: http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=690b0543a813b0ecfc51b0374c0ce6c8275435f0 [04:44] a 4yo committed to the linux kernel [04:45] little piece of news from this evening, i met the guy that called the ambulance for me and bought him a pint :) poor guy lost a pair of trousers to my blood apparently :( [04:45] apparently my blood patch stayed on the road for over a week :) pretty chuffed [04:45] I'm glad you're ok now [04:45] ty sir :) [04:47] is it me, or does this cat look like a zombie? https://pbs.twimg.com/media/B5RZBaxIgAEojT7.jpg:large [04:47] totally zombie-cat. [05:57] allo mapps === zmoylan-1i is now known as zmoylan-pi [10:13] mehhhhhhh [10:18] morning boys and girls. [10:24] Hi all [10:24] hi TheProphet[S] [10:26] heh, chrimstas party season http://www.itv.com/news/london/2014-12-16/passengers-along-entire-platform-burst-into-song-and-belt-out-1980s-erasure-classic-while-waiting-for-tube/ [10:28] I have Ubuntu 14.04 suddenly freezing quite often. I checked online and noticed it is a common problem. So far I found no solution though. Most people suggest to swap nvidia drivers to the proprietary tested, which I have, but the problem persists [10:29] It doesn't matter what I'm doing, it just freezes and I have to reset from the pc tower, nothing else works. When I reboot I have to go to recovery or the video card won't show anything on screen (the pc is connected via hdmi to the tv [10:30] I can't even access the tty [10:32] Perhaps I should try to reset grub, as I fiddled with that to restore Plymouth, and that didn't work either [10:32] I wanted the old style Linux boot splash, tux and text flowing [10:33] I don't see how grub would affect the system once it's booted though [10:34] The freeze happens after login, I can start some applications but after a while that's it, I have to hard reset [10:35] I spent all morning trying to solve this problem [10:37] I assume you never encountered this problem with your Ubuntu installations [10:43] i have seen a small increase in freezes recently [10:43] very much nvidia related [10:46] Froze again as I was installing gparted, I'm going to have to deal with broken packages too now :-( [10:46] Is there a way to determine the error? [10:46] just the usual [10:46] What happens exactly at the moment of freezing, [10:47] if it's nvidia problems what normally happens is the computer keeps running but the display just stops updating [10:50] So if I go to tty2, to which I already logged when the display was working, I should be able to reboot? Because if the computer works I can usually press the start physical button on the tower and reboot, but not in these cases. It seems it's not just the display that freezes, it's the entire system. Nothing works, not just visually [10:51] it depends how quick you are [10:51] once the display stops working other things will pile up behind it essentially [10:51] more and more stuff will start to deadlock because it is waiting on something else [10:52] these types of problems are nearly always caused by hardware failure though [10:53] You suggest the video card might be failing? [10:53] or power supply or motherboard [10:53] or anything else that contains capacitors really [10:54] I do get a strange error in Windows too [10:54] As I said the video card is connected through hdmi to a tv [10:56] In Windows the audio (coming from the video card in this case) fails, or the video does I'm not sure. When that happens I have to use the Jack from the motherboard for audio, and the hdmi audio doesnt respond anymore [10:57] Perhaps it's just the video card hdmi that is having issues [10:57] I'm going to connect the TV to the dvi output and see if I can replicate the error [11:01] If it works I'll try to connect the hdmi again but selecting the analog audio output [11:01] Instead of the hdmi [11:09] No freezing so far === dutchie_ is now known as dutchie [11:18] I can't replicate the error with the DVi cable. I'm going to connect the hdmi cable now and see if by selecting the analog audio output I can replicate the error [11:59] It's working fine so far, no freezing, video through hdmi and audio through standard analogue output === paulb_ is now known as bluap [15:26] yay!
