[00:31] Hi [00:32] I got a Nexus 7 1st Generation for Christmas and am trying to load it with Ubuntu Touch [00:32] I followed all of the instructions listed here http://developer.ubuntu.com/en/start/ubuntu-for-devices/installing-ubuntu-for-devices/ [00:33] After unlocking and using a key combination to fastboot, I am told that no development channel exists for "grouper" [00:33] Elleo: go ahead and update Android to 5.0.1 first. [00:33] joshuasm32: 2012 Nexus 7 is not supported. [00:33] Is only the 2nd generation Nexus 7 tablet supported [00:34] ... [00:34] The bad news is yes. The good news is that the Nexus 5 is close enough chipset-wise that it's the reason I get to use Ubuntu on my Nexus 5. [00:34] I just paid for this one specifically for Ubuntu Touch, is it in any way possible to do a hack or use an experimental channel?! [00:34] No. [00:34] ... [00:34] The universe hates me. [00:35] Do you think that one will eventually come out, or is it a lost cause [00:35] If you dig around, you might be able to find the old saucy-based images, but most Ubuntu apps no longer run on that. [00:35] It will never be supported. [00:36] In theory someone could do it, maybe, but it's been a year and no one has. Maybe two... I forget when they dropped support for the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 7. [00:37] Do you know how one could attempt to install an old saucy-based image? [00:37] You'd have to *find* the image, first, and then you'd have to hope the tools still worked and they probably don't. [00:38] I know there was some talk on the mailing list about keeping the last image around for Galaxy Nexus and 2012 Nexus 7, but I don't remember what came of that. [00:38] My advice is return the tablet. I think Groupon had 2013 N7s for $149 which wasn't such a bad deal. [00:39] I got mine used on eBay :/ [00:40] Out of curiosity, would Firefox OS or Sailfish OS possibly support it? [00:40] No idea, but Firefox OS might. [00:41] See if you can install MultiROM Manager on it. I'm not sure if that's available (check the Google Play Store) but that'll probably be your safest bet for trying Firefox OS as a dual boot option before just flashing it. [00:51] Is it possible to change from grouper to flow? [00:51] Is this a hardware issue? [00:51] The 2012 and 2013 models are entirely different devices with no hardware in common. [00:52] Firefox OS isn't available for grouper [00:52] *facepalming intensifies* [00:53] There's not really a polite way to say "research more next time", but I hope the tablet/budget ratio was low enough that you can just enjoy your new web browsing and Netflix display. :/ [00:53] You can get the free "Reddit is fun" app and make it a cat picture machine. :) [00:58] Used all of the money I had saved (minor here) [00:58] D: [00:58] No returns [00:58] Then this is definitely a life lesson. [00:58] You can always try to flip it. [01:01] What about CyanogenMod? [01:01] Sorry for offtopic, but... [01:01] No idea, sorry. :) [02:52] hi touch people! === tt_ is now known as Guest80790 === genii is now known as ChristmasPresent === ChristmasPresent is now known as genii [05:49] Merry Christmas all [05:52] Can anyone tell me the status of the Nexus 5 port? Since most of the other devices are now in RTM I was wondering if people such as rsalveti have gotten to working on the N5 port [06:09] shiggitay: what do you mean by "current status"? [06:09] Everything but Bluetooth basically works. [06:09] like what works / what doesn't [06:09] ah ok [06:09] LTE data etc? [06:09] HW accell? [06:09] Everything but Bluetooth. [06:10] oh and battery optimization I think I read [06:10] The upowerd transition greatly improved all that. [06:10] Bluetooth doesn't work; Power management issues (the battery performance isn't great) <=== all else works 100%? [06:10] which dev channel should I DL from? [06:11] Basically, root Android 5.0.1, install MultiROM Manager, and then install Ubuntu touch from there (ubuntu-rtm/14.09 is what you want) and dual boot and try it out. [06:11] Don't use a dev channel. Use ubuntu-rtm/14.09. [06:11] I don't mind wiping totally [06:11] If you use MultiROM you can also try out vivid and other channels without wiping and losing your data. [06:11] I'm backing up my Android install.. I'm bored and I don't mind wiping [06:12] Vivid is gonna be 15.04 right? [06:12] Well, you can do that too but I don't know how. :) Maybe ubuntu-device-flash has some arcane incantation. [06:12] Vivid will be 15.04, yes. [06:12] ok [06:14] nhaines, https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Devices <-- go to where it says stuff about the N5 [06:14] do you think UT on the N5 could be considered daily driver material yet? [06:16] Yeah, if I didn't need a decent podcast manager, Google Navigation, and Ingress, I would probably be using it as a daily driver. [06:16] ok [06:16] do you know if there's TuneIn Radio for it? [06:17] Also is there a way to see how much cellular data is used? [06:17] Let me reboot into it and check. [06:17] thanks [06:20] Nothing with the name "TuneIn". [06:20] Aww [06:20] any web radio? [06:20] player [06:20] Quite a few. [06:20] okay cool [06:21] Not sure about the cellular data. Nothing jumps out at me in System Settings, but I seem to recall there was talk of tracking this in the future. [06:21] this is nifty... I'm using my BayTrail tablet with Kubuntu 14.10 to get this done xD [06:21] Between the lack of metrics and T-Mobile USA's extremely generous data plans (plus the fact I usually use Wi-Fi) I have no idea how much data Ubuntu uses. [06:22] okay thanks [06:22] much appreciated :) [06:22] No worries. If you do use T-Mobile USA, you have to make a manual edit to get cellular data, but it's simple and other than that eveyrthing works. [06:22] I use Sprint USA lol [06:22] :) [06:23] Might be fine then! :) [06:23] CDMA [06:23] xD yay [06:23] Oh, Ubuntu doesn't run on the CDMA Nexus 5. I mean, it does, but I'm pretty sure there's no celluar anythng. [06:23] So that's another reason to use MultiROM Manager. [06:23] I'll see what happens [06:23] Sounds good. [06:24] I mean there's no mention of stuff not working besides BT [06:24] so that tells me that cell data should work [06:24] calls too I'd hope [06:24] No, no cell data or calls or text messages should work. [06:24] Only GSM is supported. [06:24] hmm [06:25] I actually helped rsalveti (the N5 maintainer) test a super early build of UT [06:25] I mean, the N5 isn't supported at all. But every thing else is on GSM hardware. [06:25] I'd be thrilled if it works, but my understanding is that it doesn't. [06:26] okay I'll report back [06:26] nhaines, merry xmas if you celebrate :) [06:26] Ubuntu's still worth playing around with on wifi though, even if only for an hour or two, because it's pretty neat. So maybe you'll install it and it'll work somehow. :) [06:26] I don't but I'm visiting family who does anyway, so I appreciate it thanks. :) [06:26] Merry Christmas to you too! [06:26] thanks! :) [06:28] I'm a little bit excited... [06:28] XD [06:28] now backing up apps and stuff as per the guide says [06:29] shiggitay: the Android 5 restore process is finally pleasant. :) [06:29] haha good [06:29] yeah I'm on Lolipop indeed [06:29] factory image xD [06:29] Same. :) [06:30] I would like to get (wait for it...) an iPhone 6+, but I'd keep my n5 for screwing around with stuff, and for international travel [06:30] I am actually going to Toyko in March [06:30] gonna try anyway [06:30] Ooh, nice! [06:30] XD [06:31] Yeah, my carrier is really nice for international service. They even offer free international data. [06:32] ok so how woudld I install the upowerd portion? [06:32] and cool [06:32] would* [06:32] upowerd is what Ubuntu uses on the backend. There's nothing to install. [06:32] ha ok it's included [06:32] cool [06:32] er ah* [06:32] not ha >_> [06:32] Yeah, r10 was pre-transition and r11 is post-transition. Was a dramatic change. [06:32] ok [06:33] what's the current build at? [06:33] r what [06:33] r11 [06:33] okay [06:33] yay for KDE's Wobbly Windows lol [06:34] * shiggitay runs Funtoo Linux on his desktop [06:34] I'm giving a talk on Ubuntu in January so the first week I'm going to film demo footage to splice into my talk at the appropriate moment. Looking forward to it. [06:34] ah nice [06:34] shiggitay@VocaloidHaven ~ $ uname -a [06:34] Linux VocaloidHaven 3.17.2-gentoo2014-11-5-shiggity #9 SMP Thu Nov 27 17:07:05 EST 2014 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux [06:34] I might throw it on YouTube if I manage to get a standalone script. [06:34] sweet [06:34] where are you from? [06:34] Boston, MA area here [06:35] Orange County, CA here. [06:35] SoCal? [06:35] Yup. [06:39] awesome :) [06:40] It's not bad. Nice, enjoyable, warm Christmas, ha. [06:41] okay so question... I just relocked/locked my bootloader to give my phone a good wipe, but there's reminence of my custom recovery... how do I totally make it stock? [06:41] @ nhaines [06:41] relocked/unlocked* [06:42] Well, you'd flash the factory image. [06:42] Ah [06:42] ok [06:42] that'd wipe the recovery partition etc? [06:43] You can extract recovery.img from the image and run 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img' [06:43] ok [06:43] Well, no, it'd overwrite the recovery partition. [06:43] ahhh duh [06:43] haha [06:43] No guarantees for the remaining space. :) [06:44] will all this work from 5.0 vs from 5.0.1? [06:44] And I'm not sure if you have to unlock the bootloader to flash the factory image, but you will have to for the Ubuntu installation. [06:44] ya [06:45] If you have the full factory image, 4.3, 4.4.4, 5.0, and 5.0.1 should all work identically. [06:45] okay cool [06:47] The only thing that carries over is the radio. [06:52] ok here's another thing @ nhaines: when I did fastboot reboot from bootloader, it didn't boot into a default Lollipop installation. Can UT still be installed from there? [06:53] it booted into factory recovery since I flashed it over to fix the recovery bootloop (I had Team Win Recovery installed) [06:53] or can I just do it straight from bootloader without an Android OS installed? [06:56] nhaines, ping [06:56] :P [06:57] Reading. [06:57] So all flashing happens straight from recovery. For everything. [06:58] Ah okay, so I can do fastboot reboot and it'd go to recovery and I can run ubnutu-device-flash from there no problem? [06:58] ubuntu* [06:58] Or ./flash-all.sh from the Android stock image, or anything. Yup. [06:58] okay cool [06:59] if it doesn't work as is I'll reinstall the entire factory image and go from there [06:59] cool [06:59] thanks [06:59] Yup. You ought to always be able to go back to the factory image (good time to have 5.0.1). [07:02] yeah indeed [07:05] seems like I'll have to go back to total factory state [07:08] Didn't work? [07:08] I decided to do it for good measure [07:09] aannnd it's done [07:10] wth it only boots to recovery and ubuntu-device-flash expect my phone to be in bootloader, and when it is it doesn't seem to proceed [07:10] expects* [07:15] Hold the volume buttons and hold power for 10 seconds. Keep the volume buttons both down. [07:15] You'll come back in recovery. [07:15] I am in recovery, but device flash complains of not finding a ADB device interface [07:16] an* [07:16] AH! It's finally booting into Lollipop [07:17] good [07:18] the first boot is of course taking years lol [07:19] As it always does. :) [07:20] Same with Ubuntu. === shiggitay_ is now known as shiggitay|Tablet [07:21] nhaines, hello lol [07:21] Linux VocaloidHaven-Tablet 3.19.0-031900rc1-generic #201412210135 SMP Sun Dec 21 01:36:56 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux [07:22] yay for running a bleeding edge kernel haha [07:22] ahh there we go... phone ready for initial setup [07:28] nhaines, http://pastebin.com/sK7YhcSb [07:32] okay nvm got it [07:32] forgot --bootstrap haha [07:46] It's always the little details, right? :) [07:46] Glad that all got up and running.. [07:53] yah except I can't seem to get cellular data working [07:53] not even EVDO [07:54] Expected. I don't think that any Linux-based OS has decent CDMA support. [07:56] I'm sure someone'll cook something up [07:58] I'd be surprised. It's been 7 years now. [07:58] No one uses CDMA except a couple of US carriers. [07:58] yeah [07:58] Sprint and Verizon [07:59] i think ofono has very basics but that's about it, not sure if rilmodem would though [08:00] okay so I'm running 14.10 (r12) atm... would the builds of Vivid look any different? [08:01] I think there are some minor differences, but nothing substantial. The problem is that vivid has had almost no QA. [08:01] Ah [08:01] is there any chance it has CDMA support? [08:01] No. [08:01] aww heh [08:02] There are only two carriers in the entire world that use CDMA, and they're moving to LTE instead. CDMA is literally obsolete. [08:04] well I think Sprint is classified as CDMA/LTE since my N5 can use LTE bands === chihchun_afk is now known as chihchun [08:07] The first Ubuntu phone doesn't have LTE support, so I think they've just focused solely on GSM support thus far. [08:08] hmm [08:08] Although the Meizu phone ought to have LTE support and the N5 works great on T-Mobile once the APN is renamed. [08:08] (ofono doesn't have IPv6 support unfortunately.) [08:09] I might do the TMobile Test Drive to see how well the N5 on UT runs [08:09] Runs great. You just have to set up cellular data manually. [08:10] can I use my phone phone for such? It's saying that they'll send you and iPhone 5S [08:10] wtf phone phone [08:10] heh [08:11] an** [08:11] god I"m tired [08:11] I don't know. Any GSM phone should work but they had to provision my N5 if I remember right. It does have a MicroSIM card though. [08:12] yeah it does [08:12] oh you mean the Test Drive? [08:12] Yes. [08:13] blah I think it wants me to go to a physical store [08:14] Might. They're usually pretty quick around here. Although timing.... [08:14] hmm [08:18] Well, I think it's time for sleep after all. [08:18] shiggitay: good luck with that install! [08:19] thanks nhaines [08:19] have a good night [08:54] rsalveti, is there any chance you'll add in CDMA/LTE for the Nexus 5? I'm running the latest build from the 'rtm' channel, and that's about the only thing that's missing, besides a tad bit more stability. [09:44] anyone using tethering? [10:04] ybon, nope [17:31] hey all Merry Christmas Day! [17:32] Okay so I tried out UT on my (technically unsupported) Nexus 5, and while I liked it, it wasn't usable enough for me without CDMA/LTE data, of which I know isn't implemented (yet). [17:32] I decided to revert to Android, and my backup restored nicely, but for some reason Google Play services' update won't complete. Any idea why? [17:33] I reverted to 5.0.1 [17:33] Factory image [17:34] Oh and also it doesn't seem to receive calls either. [17:34] I had a friend try and call me but he says he let it ring 6x before it went to VM [17:34] May be it was a setting when I was mucking around with it? Not sure. [17:34] maybe* [17:36] ah interesting... it was due to the fact that I didn't have WiFi on.. I guess the setting for large files over WiFi only is on [17:36] cool solved. lol [17:38] aaannnd setting found and set to also update over LTE. [17:39] basically any network connection even if "Data charges may apply" of which I have ample data === chihchun is now known as chihchun_afk [18:26] I got a Moto G LTE, codename peregrin, which has no port.
