KowAny pros here with disk partitioning and grub? I am attemping to boot a DOS floppy image from grub. It boots fine, but DOS only sees the first FAT32 partition. I tried hiding it using parttool in grub2 but all it did was hide the only filesystem that DOS was seeing (so now I have no C:)05:26
KowI'm not sure if this is a DOS question/issue or grub2. I'm thinking it's DOS but I may be able to utilize grub to get around it05:27
=== Guest63966 is now known as sUbMuNdO
KowActually, I know the issue is DOS because the floppy image is located on the FAT32 partition that I want DOS to see, but it still doesnt see it.05:27
roraclecfhowlett: fyi, I tried installing various 14.10 flavors, so IDK if it not being LTS is an issue.  I can't understand why past versions people say "it worked flawlessly" and current versions "it doesn't work at all".  I'm close to just throwing Windows back on there, but I'd rather not if I don't have to, ya know?05:28
bubbasauresKow, The grub manual is online, I would check there on dos to start with.05:28
cfhowlettroracle, replace the wifi chip.  should be easy.05:28

citizenKubuntu 14.04. Just installed TV Tuner Card. Need information on how to get Kubuntu to recognize it...05:30
Kowdrive layout: (hd0,msdos1) is FAT32, (hd0,msdos2) is NTFS, (hd0,msdos3) is FAT32. the floppy image is on msdos3, I want DOS to see only msdos3.05:30
KowI did parttool (hd0,msdos1) hidden+, parttool (hd0,msdos2) hidden+, parttool (hd0,msdos3) hidden- but DOS doesn't see anything then (except for it's own image mounted as A:)05:31
NightmanI have issues. I got two OS but not a dual boot which is what I intended, I need to use Boot Manager to change OS or the BIOS for default boot OS but I don't get an option to change OS at boot up or anywhere at all. Maybe I will reinstall Ubuntu again and create a Swap partition first, I need to find out how to get the OS option at boot up.05:31
KowI thought maybe the NTFS partition at msdos2 was throwing it off, but the fact that I hid it shouldn't affect it at all.05:31

rosxhello. I made an Thunderbird account with a private mail-server address in the past. Now for unknown reasons all linux distributions I install know that address. What the hell is this behavior? It is against state law to transfer such data from the distribution to distributer!05:55
cfhowlettrosx, as you know doubt know, ubuntu is stateless ...05:55
rosxNo I don't know of it.05:55
rosxThey have to comply to law just as everyone else has to.05:56
cfhowlettrosx, before you go into full froth, YOU are importing account information.  it is NOT transferring without your explicit action and consent.05:57
rosxcfhowlett... Well the Adress is drawn with a E-Mail Domain. I remember this didn't happen when I had to configure the E-Mail-Account the first time with thunderbird on a linux distro.05:59
cfhowlettrosx,  in other words... it pulled the account information YOU provided05:59
=== grubles is now known as Guest36596
rosxcfhowlett: I assume it does so.05:59
=== export is now known as Guest96602
rosxcfhowlett: Another possibility would be it fetches the information from the domain's server. But I am not aware of such a procedure/protocol06:00
cfhowlettrosx, again, it can06:01
rosxcfhowlett: It can what exactly?06:01
cfhowlettrosx, it does NOTHING without your input.  PROOF?  get an ubuntu live CD/USB.  start from that.  now: get email ... you wont' be able to until you authorize and establiish accounts06:01
rosxcfhowlett: I don't know the source of the information for the account data, so I can't tell if ubuntu uses unlawfull procedure.06:03
cfhowlettrosx, do the test I described above and you'll know.06:04
rosxcfhowlett: I am not sure if you are with me. The problem at hand is server information beeing shown WITHOUT my direct input. And i have no clue where that information is coming from. I reinstalled distros several times since i first input that data.06:05
rosxso the data almost surely doesn't come from my local harddrive.06:05
cfhowlettrosx, YOU set up a user account.   you provided an email address ...06:06
cfhowlettrosx, correct it is NOT on the HDD.06:06
rosxwell a few distro iterations earlier.06:06
rosxcfhowlett. ubuntu should not be able to tell who I am. So the data would be publicly available from an ubuntu server now.06:07
cfhowlettrosx, then stop TELLING ubuntu who you are.  Use a different email account.06:07
rosxcfhowlett: This is not possible. Why on earth did ubuntu get the means to keep data like the one at hand?06:08
cfhowlettrosx it doesn't.06:08
ivorybishopwow06:08
cfhowlettrosx, *ALL* of the information you see comes/came from YOU06:08
rosxokay. So what is happening there?06:09
ivorybishopUbuntu cannot read minds.06:09
ivorybishopmy bad. I'll stay out of this conv06:09
rosxcfhowlett: well if it came from me it does not come from me anymore.06:09
rosxcfhowlett: someone else is providing the information now.06:09
cfhowlettrosx, false.  absolutely false.06:09
cfhowlettrosx but I won't confuse with fact.  here's the cure >>> make a virginal email account.06:10
cfhowlettrosx, deactivate, unlink and remove the non-desired account.06:10
rosxcfhowlett: So i once input server data, which now shows up "automatically" in a procedure that tells: "querrying ubuntu database" or something alike... And i should not be worried about unlawfull behavior?06:10
nafg_rosx are you worried about the law or are you worried about your privacy?06:11
cfhowlettrosx, not a cop.  if you're convinced that you've been legally violated, get a laywer.06:11
cfhowlett*lawyer*06:11
rosxcfhowlett: how hard is it to understand that i can't dump the domain and the associated server information?06:11
rosxnafg_: it's practically the same in this case06:11
cfhowlettrosx, who provided that info?  YOU DID06:11
nafg_that doesn't change the question06:12
rosxcfhowlett: I never authorized the data to be held on a ubuntu server.06:12
rosxnafg_: I don't worry about the law. The law is. In this case i have trouble with ubuntu and it's seemingly unlawful behavior.06:13
nafg_you mean you have trouble with your privacy?06:13
cfhowlettrosx, you authorized information retention ...06:13
nafg_are you trying to be a cop, or a victim?06:13
rosxcfhowlett: I never did.06:14
rosxcfhowlett: I don't remember a form that asked something like "Do you allow to transfer this data to a ubuntu server" or something alike anyways...06:14

Martijn-NLHi everyone - I have a problem. Something blocked an incomming request to my Ubuntu machine. Is there a log or something like that so I can recognise the cause of this problem. It occurs only by requests from outside my network, but it has worked untill a few days ago. I'm searching for a solution for hours now. Anyone?11:51
totesmuhgoatsMartijn-NL, you could try checking /var/syslog11:53
totesmuhgoatsif you are behind a router or something that could also be responsible11:53

dawsonwould a 64 bit windows thing work with my 64 bit pc?15:24

ikoniano, windows software is not designed for linux15:24

ubottuswap is used to move unused programs and data out of main memory to make your system faster. It can also be used as extra memory if you don't have enough. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq for more info16:26
SeveasVoyage: stop wasting our time. Buy a new computer.16:26
jhutchinsVoyage: You can create a swap file on your regular filesystem if you don't want to mess with partitions.16:26
jaskell_Seveas, it's a folder since any attempt to get into the folder and look at the file freezes, so I'm doing sudo rm -r folder16:26
jaskell_jatt, can I use gvfs-trash -r <folder> instead16:27
Seveasjaskell_: ok, there may simply be a ginormous amount of files in that folder, ext* filesystems don't like this. Try this command (and don't use gvfs-trash!): ls -lad /path/to/folder/16:27
Seveasjaskell_: the ls -lad should give one line of output, paste it in here please16:27

EriC^^jaskell_: no it means theres another sub dir in16:30
jhutchinsVoyage: Yes, you have a very small swap file.16:30
jattjhutchins: forget about gvfs-trash my bad. but > <file> does it work?16:31
jaskell_EriC^^, let me see if I can find out the name of those subdirectories, but I think ls will freeze16:31
Seveasjaskell_: no, a folder with a ginormous amount of files. The folder itself is taking up a *lot* of space, let alone the things in it.16:31
Seveasjaskell_: stop.16:31
jhutchinsVoyage: You could probably use up to 1G of swap.16:31
jhutchinsVoyage: You could do 2g, but managing that would be very slow.16:31
EriC^^jaskell_: what the.. why's it say 585248768 ? shouldn't it be 4096?16:31
Seveasjaskell_: you need some careful ls invocations here: ls -1 -f /path/to/folder | wc -l16:32
jhutchinsjatt: that type of redirection is a function of the bash shell, so if you're doing console-based commands you can use the various redirect tools.16:32
Seveasjaskell_: the -f will make it not try to sort. It will still take a while. But that command should give you the number of files.16:32
jaskell_EriC^^, other folders are 409616:32
Seveasjaskell_: if you just want to delete them, rm -r the folder and wait. That will also take a while16:32
nbusronehi again , why does default directory ubuntu 14.04 view doesn't have a full time and date for modified ? instate on a date ? lets say I created a folder , I only can see both folder on today's date but not the full time created16:32
EriC^^jaskell_: yeah, dirs are 409616:32
Seveasjaskell_: EriC^^: a large number there means you have a gazillion files in the folder.16:32

However, this screws up my keyboard layout somehow.. "test" becomes "ngbn", I've found 3 keys that act as CTRL, the number "5" is backspace, etc. no keyboard layout I can16:33

Cogito4816He said he has yet to do it23:46
daftykinsCogito4816: well i don't know for sure as i'm not staff, nor in development, but i'd imagine it's just like DVD playback, technically it's not permitted and we're breaking the law playing one on Linux.23:46
Cogito4816So he will need it eventually23:46
Cogito4816Or so I assume23:47
daftykinsikonia: i use it too! :D23:47
ikoniaahhhh23:47
daftykinsit wasn't able to work out playback on TV series of course, it just picks the longest episode or largest episode i think - but i'm sure film playback would be fine23:47
