Grudgehey, i'm new on linux/kubuntu03:29
Grudgehow can i install programs?03:29
bsdtuxgrudge: you can use the Muon Discover to install applications03:29
Grudgelet me check :)03:30
bsdtuxor from a terminal use apt-get install <app name>  to install an application03:30
Grudgebsdtux: the complete file name?03:32
Grudgeex: Sublime Text 2.0.2 x64.tar03:32
Grudgeapt.get install Sublime Text 2.0.2 x64.tar03:33
Grudge?03:33
bsdtuxnope would be sudo apt-get install sublime-text. You can also search from the command line using sudo apt-cache search sublime03:33
Grudgeit works :D03:34
Grudgethanks03:35
bsdtuxNo problem.03:35
bsdtuxare there any mentors on this channel that could give me some advice on a path? I can't decided between packaging or development as a way to start contributing03:42
somekoolGrudge: when I dont know the exact name, I do $ aptitude search partial_name03:44
somekoolthen $ sudo apt-get install full_name03:44
somekoolbsdtux: I think it depends more on your interested, what you want to learn03:44
somekoolyou could pick up JJ (junior) bugs from the bugs.kde.org if you are interested in C++,03:45
bsdtuxwell I am a linux sys admin by day but I really want to move over to development. So I want to learn more about development but I worry that I may require more hand holding than someone has the time for03:45
somekoolhave you look at this page ? https://wiki.kubuntu.org/Kubuntu/GettingInvolved03:46
bsdtuxbut I also really have a twitch for knownledge on how packages are created so I could do my own03:46
bsdtuxthanks somekool, I was reading that page a few minutes ago. Thinking of going through the MOTU03:47
somekoolmaking .deb packages => https://wiki.debian.org/HowToPackageForDebian03:47
bsdtuxI have built some apps with python though. Like my datacenter shutdown scripts and recently a port scanner03:48
somekoolfor opensource contributation, its best to scratch your own itch. what is painful/annoying to you ? fix it.03:48
bsdtuxgotcha.03:48
somekoolJunior bugs on KDE https://bugs.kde.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=JJ03:49
somekoolthere is plasma bindings for a lot of languages too, you could write an applet in the language of your choice03:50
bsdtuxcool. So those would be bugs that a junior developer should be able to fix correct03:50
somekoolalso, test drive Vivid, bug report03:50
somekoolcorrecgt.03:50
bsdtuxgreat. Thanks for the point in the right direction. I will work on getting setup and going tomorrow. Thanks somekool. That really helps03:50
somekoolnp03:51

jubo2Hi and thanks for the Kubuntu11:38
jubo2I'd like a method of inputting a 'c' with a cedilla ( little hook under it )11:39
jubo2I have a friend who long time ago gave me something that I run with something like "sh .xinitrc"11:40
jubo2that coded it to me pressing Alt-Gr + comma and then the 'c' or 'C' and there would reliably be a cedilla11:40
jubo2sry.. not alt gr, the weird metakey between Alt Gr and Ctrll11:41
jubo2but I lost that in a system migration11:41
jubo2didn't copy the dot-files from home dir. beginners fault11:42

ildefonsoand X keeps leaking RAM like mad as long as I have desktop effects enabled :(17:19
BluesKajildefonso, which gpu?17:32
ildefonsoBluesKaj, AMD R9 270x17:33
ildefonsofunny enough, it doesn't leak memory if I use compiz (but compiz doesn't behave very well with kde)17:34
BluesKajildefonso, dunno why you would need compiz, but i haven't heard of this problem with newer kubuntus17:38
bsdtuxOn KUbuntu 14.10 I can't seem to find Passwords and Encryption Keys. I am trying to follow this guide https://launchpad.net/+help-registry/openpgp-keys.html. Can someone point me in the correct position17:39
ildefonsoBluesKaj, I tried compiz to isolate the problem, and I only observe the problem while using kwin with desktop effects enabled.17:39
ildefonsoBluesKaj, and, of course, upon observing that it works fine with compiz, I considered using it instead of kwin for the time being, but it has too many compatibility issues.17:39
ildefonsoand I just do not like gnome nor unity.17:40
ildefonsoless than 3.5 hours uptime, and X is already close to 2GB :(17:40
BluesKajildefonso, is this 14.1017:44
ildefonsothis is 14.0417:46
ildefonsoBluesKaj, which gpu do you use?17:46
BluesKajnvidia 8400gs on the desktop and intel on this laptop17:47
BluesKajildefonso, personally when purchasing new computers in the last 10 yrs I've stayed with nvidia or intel gpus where possible, due to my problems with ati/amd graphics previously on linux17:53
ildefonsoyeah, historically nvidia has had better linux support.  I bought this one because can be used for GPGPU computing, whereas most (cheap) nvidia cards has to be "hacked" somehow to do so.17:55
BluesKajwell. my pc is used as a HTPC so the cheaper cards serve the purpose since we're not gamers17:59
ildefonsoI am not a big gamer, but I am trying to work with OpenCL.18:00

arthurfiggishello :) does anyone know what desktop "effect" is the one which, if you move the cursor to the top left of the screen, allows you to easily switch between windows? it's a bit of an annoyance when playing full-screen games, occasionally moving the mouse up to the corner of a game screen will bring up the window switcher21:35
arthurfiggis(been looking around at the ones enabled but none of them seem to be the right one)21:35
bpromptarthurfiggis:    you mean the next "workspace" ?21:36
arthurfiggisbprompt: i don't think so...maybe i should explain better, say you have three or four windows open already...if you move to the top left of the screen with the cursor it'll sort of "zoom out" and allow you to switch between those different windows by clicking on them21:37
arthurfiggis(unless that is switching workspaces, in which case you're probably right :) )21:37
bprompthmmmm maybe is not that21:38
arthurfiggisbprompt: i don't have any virtual desktops enabled so that was my thought, but I'll take a look anyway, thanks...i was assuming it was a desktop effect but flipping the individual ones on and off doesn't seem to do much :(21:39
ScuniziUnder Window Management in the Effects section is "Present Windows" .. I think that is what you're looking for.21:41
Scuniziarthurfiggis: ^--^21:41
bprompthmmm21:41
bpromptI'm  on 12.04.... and I think that'd be as Scunizi  in 14.04 maybe... in 12.04   would be under "window behaviour > task switcher"21:42
arthurfiggisScunizi: aha...yep that's the one, as soon as i turned that one off everything's fine again :) much appreciated! that's what i get for not checking the bottom of the list i guess ;)21:42
