CrellEvening folks.  I've 2 systems on the same network; one is able to resolve a given DNS name, the other not.  The DNS name was configured ~2 hours ago.  (It's a subdomain on a domain I control.)01:06
CrellI am assuming a cache issue (because it's always caching), but I tried clearing the dns cache with /etc/init.d/dns-clean restart and it's still not loading.01:07
CrellWhat's my next step here?01:07
daftykinsCrell: CLI utils to confirm a dig response with the same DNS server for your host01:08
CrellWell the working device is my Android phone on WiFi; I don't think it has dig on it.01:08
CrellThe non-working is a Kubuntu laptop.01:08
daftykinswell check what DNS your phone is grabbing and query that from the desktop01:09

CrellEr, between that server and a laptop, sorry.01:57
CrellI can access it now.  But... the SSL connection didn't work until I setup forwarding on my router for port 443.  Which makes me think that any traffic would be routed out of the network and back in, which aside from the performance issues makes me nervous from a security perspective.01:57
CrellAm I right to be concerned, and what's the proper solution if so?01:57

avatarafancyfetus_, you executed "sudo grub-mkconfig" after you modified the grub config?03:26
avatarathe one in /etc/default03:26
Guest16726Well. if you are there, execute "cat grub.cfg | grep ^menuentry"03:27
fancyfetus_I executed sudo update-grub03:27
Guest16726You will see all menu entrys on the missing grub menu03:27
fancyfetus_ahh yes, my bad03:28
fancyfetus_one for Ubuntu, and one for MacOS03:28
Guest16726Ok03:28
Guest16726May be it is a timeout03:28
cfhowlettfancyfetus_, in all the tutorials I've read, grub does NOT boot OSX.   That's why the tutorials specify the reFIND bootloader on Mac/Ubuntu systems.03:28
fancyfetus_cfhowlett. in this one, OSX boots after grub exits03:29
fancyfetus_and the MacOS menuentry exits grub03:30
Guest16726I don't remember how to set timeout of grub menu03:30
=== fancyfetus_ is now known as fancyfetus
fancyfetusI set the default entry to my MacOS entry03:32
fancyfetusand it still booted into ubuntu03:32
Guest16726in the /etc/default/grub03:33
Guest16726Lets see some lines03:34
avatarasee that GRUB_DEFAULT=0 is first entry, =1 is second03:34
avataramaybe you set it wrong03:34
Guest16726GRUB_TIMEOUT ?03:34
fancyfetusgrub timeout is 1003:35
ledNaroi think cfhowlett has a point, GRUB cant boot OSX so you have to use a third party bootloader to boot ubuntu from as opposed to trying to boot OSX from grub03:35
Guest16726is GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT commented ?03:35
Guest16726I say,03:36
Guest16726#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=003:36
fancyfetusyes03:36
EriC^^make a file called /boot/grub/custom.cfg with the line timeout=1003:37
EriC^^and add a comment in /etc/default/grub that says that file is created and overrides the /etc/default/grub one03:37
fancyfetusWait, no03:38
fancyfetusGuest16726, Grub hidden timeout is NOT commented. It is 003:38
Guest16726Put # in front of the line03:38
Guest16726and update-grub03:39
fancyfetusthere is also a line, grub hidden timeout quiet = true03:39
fancyfetusGRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true03:39
EriC^^fancyfetus: that should be fine03:39
EriC^^fancyfetus: how is grub launching the osx efi file?03:40
EriC^^fancyfetus: can you paste your /boot/grub/grub.cfg ?03:40
EriC^^did you manually add the entry there or did grub pick it up?03:40
fancyfetusAWWWW YIS!03:40
fancyfetusCommenting that line out, fixed it :D03:40
Guest16726Good03:41
fancyfetusEriC^^, I used these instructions: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBookPro11-1/Saucy03:41
EriC^^oh ok, seems that it uses the efi boot order to boot it03:42
EriC^^when you exit grub it goes to the next in the list and it launches the osx efi file03:43
fancyfetusyes sir!03:43
EriC^^pretty cool, so is it working?03:44
fancyfetusYeah!!!03:44
Guest16726fancyfetus : I am happy it works. Just a timeout.03:45

nexus6ok hello svetlana04:00
svetlanahi.04:00
crazyhead42Ummm... I have no idea how to use this program, and I forgot what the text website is, soo... I don't know how to get the text version avalible for you04:01
nexus6i need to start program when i am logged on as common user but that program needs sudo credentials04:01
bubbasaurescrazyhead42, lots of text sites, just info this way if you even get helps slows things down is all, it is free help remember. ;)04:02
nexus6so i do not now how to do it i tried chmod even to change permissions but it doesn't launch04:02
svetlananexus6: prefix your command with sudo.04:02
nexus6i did that didn't work,program name is xarp04:03
svetlananexus6: how it didn't work? what did it do?04:03
crazyhead42Yes, but that doesn't mean I know how to copy and paste from this program before I get the OS running.04:03
nexus6i did this:sudo-to-root -X -c xarp04:03
nexus6it is arptables control program04:04
svetlananexus6: try «sudo xarp».04:04
nexus6it works when i am admin but did not when i am logged as user04:04
svetlananexus6: what do you mean? how do you differentiate «logged in as admin» and «logged in as user»?04:05
nexus6i did make 2 accounts one has Admin powers other one is common user04:05
crazyhead42How do I increase the virtual screen size? That's probably a decent start to getting the text version.04:06
svetlananexus6: you shouldn't do that with Ubuntu. Use the one with admin powers; it'll prompt you for password each time it needs admin permissions.04:06
nexus6unable under this environment too dangerous04:06
nexus6i must be logged on as user or system will be compromised04:07
Howie_#ubuntu-beginners04:07
svetlananexus6: explain what is too dangerous? Millions of ubuntu users worldwide connect to the internet from accounts which have sudo access, but escalation of privileges is not possible without user permission.04:07
svetlananexus6: that's by design.04:07
svetlananexus6: unsurprisingly, the account without sudo access (the «non-admin» account, as you call it) lacks access to run programs as root.04:08
nexus6true04:08
nexus6but there's workaround04:09
Howie_hi, could anyone help me out, im a complete ubuntu noob04:09

svetlanacrazyhead42: I would join #vbox and ask there. I would expect that, with gpm installed, you can copy from such terminal (but if there is no OS, you have to fiddle with virtualbox settings, which I have not done in a while).04:33

matschafferHi, a few days ago I was attempting to rebuild nginx to include nginx-auth-ldap. I came up with this: https://gist.github.com/matschaffer/97764148967fe17e5349 which seems to at least get the build process working but it ends up downloading an orig.tar.gz and ignoring my attempt at picking up the new module. RoryHow can I upload a file to a remote server using SFTP (note, not scp) with a one-liner?09:17
ZombyradRory: why not scp, it's basically the same thing as sftp or do you need interruptable transfers?09:26
RoryWe don't control the endpoint09:27
RoryThey won't give us a shell09:27
RoryI have set up passwordless authentication with the -o "IdentityFile..." flag, and once I get an SFTP prompt, I can use "put testfile" and it works. But I'd like to automate this sending of the "put" command into a single line09:29
SiilwynDoes anybody know when the new unity icons are planned?09:30
wafflejockRory, maybe try with a batch file -b http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl1_sftp.htm09:33
ZombyradRory: quick glance at the sftp man page and it looks like it supports the same syntax as scp, so sftp user@host1:file user@host2:file, but I'm not sure it can use the -o option for the identity file for that too09:33
wafflejockah yeah -b says it's alternative to stdin09:34
ZombyradRory: nvm, did a quick test and that sftp syntax is for getting single files, not for putting them.09:36

ZombyradRory: I think what wafflej0ck said is the best way to go, with the -b option.09:37

cfhowlettsystemd, I can.  download ubuntu.  make a boot USB.  test ubuntu and (this is the key issue.  Are you ready?)  make up your own mind!!@!!13:44
k1lsystemd: its open source and free of charge. now you can load it and see yourself13:46
phre4ksystemd: Ubuntu isn't only free like free beer but also like in freedom. You can be safe from viruses if you use the package manager, you can update all apps at once and don't have to rely on a lot of small background tasks for keeping your system up2date13:48

HamRadioand plus, there is really no reason to update froom 14.04 to 14.1016:19
HamRadioThere isn't anything new in 14.10 except some updates which you can get from PPA for 14.04, plus 14.04 being more stable16:20

deSouzaDo you know how to fix the issue? I lowered double click sensitivity and it seems to be working16:22
HamRadioNo problem.......16:23
HamRadiomy guess is is that you are touching the touchpad accedently, and I don't know how to fix it via software. You should just try to not touch the touchpad while typing16:23

HamRadioWell my first thought is, is that it's a software bug brought on from updating from 14.04 to 14.1016:24

miasmaprobably a stupid question, but does ubuntu somehow configure the initramfs wrt mobo drivers when doing basic installation? i want to install ubuntu on a core i7 ivy bridge / h77 machine and use the system on core i3 sandy bridge machine21:21
miasmaboth use intel hd graphics21:21
miasmaor maybe it just runs happily when the disks move from one machine to another21:22
bttfquestion ... is imagemagick the standard image processing cmd-line tool or is there a better one out there ?21:22
daftykinsmiasma: should transfer fine21:22

bttfok thx theadmin21:23
daftykinsmiasma: as long as it's the only disk in there so it gets GRUB etc, of course :)21:23
miasmadaftykins: yea sure. i just worried about the initramfs/kernel part21:23
miasmaotherwise it's easy to set up21:23
XCVBhello21:27
zerowaitstatemiasma: a different north bridge shouldn't make a difference. The kernel has support for both. Sometimes being monolithic has value.21:29
JonnyDamnnoxhey21:29
zerowaitstatemiasma: the "drivers" are kernel modules typically for I/O, HW RAID, or graphics.21:30
miasmazerowaitstate: in some early days some installers probed for hardware and added some module loading lists hardware specific at boot time21:30
miasmain modprobe.conf or something21:30
miasmai just thought if there's something similar still21:31
miasmae.g. if you install mdadm, it rebuilds the initramfs21:31
zerowaitstatemiasma: yeah, it does rebuild initramfs21:31
Jordan_UGuest21590: "sudo apt-get install gdisk" then please "sudo gdisk -l /dev/sda".21:31
zerowaitstatemiasma: however, the modules are loaded based on PCI discovery AFAIK21:31
miasmak21:31
miasmazerowaitstate: yea i've compiled kernels. just wasn't sure how ubuntu does it21:32
zerowaitstatemiasma: no need to recompile the kernel unless you are doing something really weird21:32
miasmathe hardware is like 99% identical. same x86-64 cpu, intel hd audio, intel hd graphics, realtek network21:32
zerowaitstatemiasma: yeah, I wouldn't worry.21:32

MexandrewGood afternoon, everyone. I am having some issues with Ubuntu 12.04, recently updated. This computer is an LTSP server that used to have 2 Ethernet interfaces. eth0 being the integrated Gigabit Ethernet, and eth1 being a PCI 10/100 card. eth0 was connected to a network hub where all the clients are connected, while eth1 was connected to the main network for internet access and management through RDP. The issue is that recently, if you plugged both eth22:48
Mexandrewernet cables at the same time, you'd lose internet access and the thin clients would not boot.22:48
MexandrewNow, eth1 wasn't properly detecting when you plugged in the cable after the HD drives were replaced, so it was removed, and a USB WIFI dongle was added. However, if I plug a cable into eth0, I still lose internet access from the wifi.22:49
