zequence | I'm actually doing some real studio recording on Ubuntu Studio for the first time since I got involved in developing it | 12:08 |
---|---|---|
knome | about time ;) | 12:09 |
zequence | I've used it before, but not to this scale. Haven't had the opportunity for a long time. Makes a difference as to getting a feel for what works and what doesn't of course | 12:11 |
knome | yeah, it's a whole different "test" for the system | 12:11 |
knome | might even be a painful one, but a good one | 12:12 |
zequence | Only thing that bothered me to begin with was actually the panel at the bottom, which we still haven't removed | 12:12 |
zequence | When you're not used to it, it'll pop up in the wrong situations | 12:14 |
zequence | Also, since this is a studio only machine, I don't need pulseaudio, and we aren't providing an easy way to turn it off (which -controls is supposed to do, feature wise) | 12:15 |
knome | s/When you're not used to it, // | 12:15 |
kubotu | knome: You did something wrong... Try s/you/me/ or tell me "help sed" | 12:15 |
knome | i did nothing wrong... :) | 12:16 |
knome | playing with old laptop which suddenly works | 12:17 |
zequence | machines can be far from logical in how they suddenly decide to start working | 12:18 |
knome | yep... | 12:18 |
knome | i remember i had left it in a "operating system not found" state, but it booted well | 12:18 |
knome | then i had to convince the OS it has pae (pentium m) | 12:18 |
knome | after which i upgraded from precise to trusty without universe/multiverse enabled | 12:19 |
knome | that was fun, i had a trusty system with xfce 4.8 components | 12:19 |
knome | eg. nothing worked | 12:19 |
knome | now i'm upgrading the mess to utopic | 12:19 |
zequence | hehe | 12:21 |
zequence | hmmm, need to reboot | 12:23 |
OvenWerks | holstein: with regards to how hard it is to add studio to other DEs. It really depends on how much extra one wants to add to the experience. Just dropping the metas in place will "work"... but adding at least something that makes sure jack can use RT and reserved memory requires some tool. Making a nice audio distro requires more work, but the distance to go is hard to know. | 20:27 |
OvenWerks | holstein: The problem with going "too far" is that we end up with a very narrow work flow that I like but doesn't work for just about anyone else. | 20:28 |
OvenWerks | Making it configurable is yet more work :) | 20:29 |
