Maxime_hi every one, when i try to install xubuntu, the installation just don't go on, when "create file for ext4 for mount" can some one help me05:03
holsteinMaxime_: sure, i can make some suggestions..05:03
holsteini would start by confirming the downloaded ISO..05:03
holstein!md505:03
ubottuTo verify your Ubuntu ISO image (or other files for which an MD5 checksum is provided), see http://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM or http://www.linuxquestions.org/linux/answers/LQ_ISO/Checking_the_md5sum_in_Windows05:03
Maxime_I already install it with the same pendrive05:04
Maxime_excuse me for my english, i am a french canadian, so maybe i will make some mistake, but i understand very well english :D05:04
holsteinthen, i would look at my installation media.. i would either run the integrety check, in the menu, or, i would just take the USB/media to another box05:05
holsteinbut, if you say the media worked on another box, then, its likely that i would then look at the machine in question05:05
holsteini would start with the memtest in the menu of the live media.. then, i would run a smart test from the live media on the hard drive05:06
holsteinif the hard drive or ram is bad, you can see odd messages/errors/behavior05:06
Maxime_I install the linux last week in this machine. It was on a old 40gig drive. Now i want to install it on a 1.5 TB. It is maybe to big for a ext4 extention???05:06
holsteinMaxime_: if you think so, make a smaller one, and test.. i dont think so.. i think its more likely a bad drive, or cable05:07
holsteinMaxime_: when i quickly search the internet for the size restriction, read that 16tb's is the size.. i have several 1gb ext4 partitions05:08
Maxime_I will test it on my Windows Machine. Do you know an app that can make a ext4 partition in windows ???05:08
holsteinMaxime_: the live iso that you are using can run on the windows machine, and make whatever you like with gparted05:09
Maxime_ok cool ... thanks for the help. I am in the installation right now...05:09
holsteinMaxime_: otherwise, i wouldnt install linux on partitions i make in windows.. just as i wouldnt do it the other way around05:09
holsteinno need for it, anyways05:09
Maxime_i see something05:11
Maxime_(process:10949): GLib-CRITICAL **:g_slice_set_config: assertion "sys_page_size == 0' failed05:12
Maxime_someone undestand this ????05:12
holsteinMaxime_: what did the smart test i suggested you run show?05:13
holsteinMaxime_: usually, i let those run for about 2 hours or more on drives that size..05:13
Maxime_i don't now how to do it :/05:13
holsteinMaxime_: as i said, i use the live iso/usb, and i run a smart test05:14
holsteinMaxime_: the process still looks like this.. http://linuxhub.net/2010/09/scan-your-hard-disk-with-gsmartcontrol-on-ubuntu-10-10/05:14
Maxime_ok yes, i didn't do it... i will do it now ... Thank you05:14
clumsy_botPlymouth keeps crashing on startup. Is there anything I should be looking at?06:04
clumsy_botFresh install and on first bootup it crashes.06:04
holsteinclumsy_bot: i'll just upgrade. have you? sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade ..then, i'll test again06:05
clumsy_botholstein: Alright, I'll look into that.06:06
mamalHi. I have a problem with Xubuntu style. It's driving me mad.06:23
mamalMany of my applications style looks ugly like this.06:23
mamalhttps://mega.co.nz/#!DIEBxLBK!O8vrzu3AIwtGArDKicNDRDTSBKh8s4kUzqGUbEuyooU06:23
mamalThey look like windows classic (or worse)06:24
mamalWhat's the problem? How can I change theme to GTK style?06:24
clumsy_botmamal: Most likely Numix bugging out.06:25
cfhowlettmamal, settings > appearance ...06:25
mamalclumsy_bot, cfhowlett: It's not Numix. It's Greybird... I have this problem in all of my styles. :<06:26
clumsy_botmamal: Really? Weird.06:28
clumsy_botmamal: The Window style is definitely Numix though.06:28
mamalclumsy_bot: Is there any file or sth. to edit for changing window style?06:29
clumsy_botmamal: Settings > Appearance as cfhowlett suggested is one way.06:30
cfhowlettmamal, settings > window manager06:30
clumsy_botmamal: GTK & Icon fall under Appearance, Window styles fall under Window Manager.06:31
mamalclumsy_bot, cfhowlett: Changing window manager does not affect inner elements style too. It only changes title bars and buttons.06:32
mamalWindow manager style*06:32
cfhowlettmamal, ALL of the elements are customizable.06:33
clumsy_botmamal: That's correct. GTK & Icons are under Appearance.06:33
mamalI just don't get it why inside the Xubuntu apps, changing window manager style works but in other apps (like VLC, or any 3rd party app) it does not.06:34
cfhowlettmamal, also see:  http://xfce-look.org/06:35
clumsy_botmamal: Doesn't VLC use Qt for theming?06:35
mamalclumsy_bot: Probably.06:36
clumsy_botmamal: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Uniform_Look_for_Qt_and_GTK_Applications06:36
mamalHmm..06:38
mamalI have installed zsh as my default shell. Maybe it's the reason. Hm?06:39
mamalEnvironment variables lost. And BOOM!06:39
clumsy_botI'm hard pressed to believe the choice of default shell would affect GTK styles.06:40
cfhowlettnon-related06:41
mamalFIXED!06:47
mamaljust installed qtcurve. It's fixed!06:47
clumsy_botmamal: Nice. :)06:48
mamalThank you clumsy_bot (:06:48

xubuntu95wHi, I have a dual monitor setup. My main monitor with the panel and most of the windows on has a resolution of 1920x1080. My second monitor  is used for less important windows which I drag over from the first monitor when I need to look at two things at once. However, when I turn on my computer, the resolution of the big main monitor is a lot less and the second display has a mirrored output of the main one but looks like a good 10:54
xubuntu95wI am running xubuntu, how do I fix this so that on the logon screen the main monitor has its normal resolution?10:54
bekksxubuntu95w: Which GPU do you use, and which driver for it?10:58

cosmidhello, i'm using xubuntu 14.04 and i've got this problem:14:59
cosmidthere was no lightdm.conf folder, so i created it and added some settings to disable guest mode14:59
cosmidand since I rebooted to check if it worked, it freezes on loading screen, before login15:00
cosmidit loops the loading animation15:00
cosmidwhat should i do?15:00
knomesounds like the file you created is invalid15:01
knomewhich file exactly did you create and what is the full contents of it?15:01
cosmidwait a sec, to find the tutorial that i followed15:01
knomecosmid, i'd rather know what you did and not what the tutorial said to do, since it's likely that you have done something wrong15:02
cosmidwell i'm searching for that tutorial to tell you what commands i added in that file, bcos i can't remember from the top of my head15:03
cosmidwell, i think i accidentally followed a tutorial for an older version and i created a lightdm.conf file and pasted this in it:15:06
cosmid[SeatDefaults]15:06
cosmidgreeter-session=unity-greeter15:06
cosmiduser-session=ubuntu15:06
cosmidallow-guest=false15:06
knomelightdm.conf in what directory?15:06
knomeare you sure you pasted that as is?15:06
knomeas i said, i'd rather want you to double-check your own file, not the tutorial15:07
cosmidetc/lightdm15:07
cosmidwell i can't check it since i can't get past the loading screen at all15:07
knomecan you access a TTY, eg. by pressing ctrl+alt+f1?15:07
knomeand FWIW, that's a tutorial for ubuntu... you need different values for xubuntu15:08
cosmidwait a sec to check if i can15:08
cosmidyeah, i can access TTY15:09
knomeright15:09
knomehttp://paste.ubuntu.com/9767788/15:10
knomehere is what you should have as values for the greeter-serssion and user-session for *xubuntu*15:10
cosmidoh ok, thanks15:11
knomenow, can you point me to the URL where you found this tutorial?15:11
cosmidi'm not familiar with tty, i've never used this before15:11
cosmidsure15:11
knomeit's just like a regular terminal15:11
cosmidhttp://askubuntu.com/questions/62564/how-do-i-disable-the-guest-session15:12
cosmidi think this it the one15:12
cosmidis*15:12
knomeok15:12
cosmidso what should i do now, edit lightdm.conf using tty?15:13
cosmidusing nano?15:13
knomefor example, yes15:14
cosmidnow that i edited the file, should i reboot the pc?15:18
cosmidor exit tty?15:18
knomeonce you have saved, reboot15:19
cosmidthank you so much15:20
cosmidit works now :)15:20
knomeyou're welcome15:21

vimarHi Pals16:07
vimarI have Kubuntu installed :-)16:07
knomeokay... this is the xubuntu support channel. are you lost?16:08
vimarbut alsa installed Xfce because heard many good things16:08
vimar:-)16:08
vimarI kinda like it, remains me old fluxbox16:09
vimarBut I've met some problem:16:10
vimarHas anybody solve a problem with adding aditional input method...? I wanted add additional language next to English, but when I choose desired  Language and try to ADD IT, the language appears for miniseconds in Input methods ind IBus preferences and dissapers not listed in my input  methods. The only option for changing keyboard is "setxkbmap" in console.16:10
vimarso any suggestions knome ?16:14
knomenope16:15
Alexfrenchwhy not to install a fresh xubuntu ?16:17
knomeAlexfrench, i don't think that'd solve his issue16:17
Alexfrenchi don't understand why not16:20
knomedo you understand how it would?16:21
vimarI do not uderstand why you suggest me xubuntu :-)16:23
vimarAlexfrench:16:23
vimarI'm not the only one using dekstop at Home, my kids and wife love KDE, so I make it easier for them by installing Kubuntu.16:24
Alexfrenchsorry maybe cuase you are on a xubuntu irc chan so i said that16:24
vimarMan some people are annoying, I have asked same quetion on Kubuntu, and they told me to ask on #xubuntu :-)16:24
cfhowlettvimar, you can have both ...16:25
Alexfrenchbut it seems i have no the skills to help you so i'll shut my mouth16:25
cfhowlettvimar, sudo apt-get install lxde xfce4 kde-plasma will grab the 3 most popular destop environments.  logout.  choose one.  login.16:26
vimarcfhowlett: really..? no way, what about having Windows 8, can I have?16:26
cfhowlettvimar, you can dual boot windows 816:26
vimarman its, Irony cfhowlett :-)16:26
vimarcfhowlett: I have installed Kubuntu, then added to that "Dekstop Manager: XFCE4", everything works fine apart adding another Input Language next to English, in effect I've to set Keyboard Input in console: setxkbmap16:28
nicholasanyone know the terminal command to launch the power dialog in xfce? thanks!16:29
knomenicholas, xfce4-power-manager-settings ?16:29
nicholaslike the dialog, not the settings. the "ask" menu16:30
knomewhat "ask" menu?16:31
nicholasok, so when you open the menu, and go to general, there is an setting that says "when power button is pressed" the options for it are: shutdown, suspend, ask and nothing16:33
nicholasnever mind, found it on a different channel, it was xfce4-session-logout16:34
knomeyes, the logout dialog...16:35
idquizhi. when I set my router in 11bgn mode I don't have internet (can't even ping router) in my 14.04. works fine with 11bg mode. any suggestions?16:36
knomeidquiz, use the 11bg mode16:37
idquizyeah but i think the driver isn't working for 11n mode16:38
idquizknome: i can do that at home but im screwed when connecting elsewhere16:39

Foo_Where does software center put programs I install?23:34
deshipuall over the place23:35
deshipuon linux, programs don't come segregated into their individual directories23:35
deshipuinstead, they put their files in different places depending on what kind of files they are23:35
Foo_ok how do I get it into a menu to click on to open.....Im a newbie to linux23:35
deshipuit should be there in the menu after you install it23:36

ntfwcAnyone know if there is a way to confine an application to a provided file?23:44
deshipuntfwc: not sure what you mean23:46
drcntfwc: You mean (for example) a text editor that when you open it, it automagically open a particular text file AND ONLY that text file; it can; open any other file?23:46
ntfwcLike a script that you give a file, and, somehow, it launches a program in a restricted state where it cannot interact with any other file23:47
drcs/can;/can't/23:47
ntfwcI know this can be done statically via apparmor or dedicated accounts, but something more dynamic would be interesting23:47
drcNope, not to my knowledge...once you open an app you're at the mercy of whatever the programmer alows it to do.23:48
deshipuntfwc: you can create a new user, give it access only to that file, and run the program as that user23:48
drcWell, if that's the case, I stand corrected :)23:49
ntfwcThat could work23:49
deshipuntfwc: also, there is docker and other paravirtualization things23:49
