=== ValicekB_ is now known as ValicekB === ogra_` is now known as ogra_ [17:18] Is Mir typically used with X and an X shim? Can it be used without those? [17:19] (I know pretty much nothing about Mir, other than that it's an alternative to X and Wayland, and is apparently the only one of the three to offer release signatures or secure downloads.) === no_mu is now known as Nothing_Much [17:36] c74d3: there is Xmir [17:39] Is Xmir required? I'd like to avoid X entirely. [17:40] Xmir is only needed to run X applications inside [17:40] gtk and qt have mir ports [17:40] so not for those [17:40] and sdl and glfw .. and many other libraires [17:41] as shell there is currently only unity8 in a useable state for tablet and phone form factors [17:41] Oh, I didn't realize that those libraries could work directly with Mir. That sounds better than I expected. [17:41] a pc desktop with unity8 is currently being worked on [17:42] since mir is meant to provide window management bits, writing shells will be simple [17:42] it is not feature complete for what a desktop needs [17:43] but we are just adressing that, and with that we also add default implementations to the mir server library .. so writing your own shell will only require a few lines of code [17:44] http://youtu.be/MXHulRlq10s thats already old [18:10] Thanks. What is a "shell" in this context? Is it like a window manager? [18:15] window manager and more [18:15] or depends on how those terms are defined .. [18:17] I have used Unity (before Mir existed), but I know little about it and wouldn't know what was Unity and what was GTK/X/etc. [18:18] I use X with i3 currently, so i3 is what I think of as a "window manager". [18:18] ah tiling .. [18:19] alan_g recently started a tiling window manager on mir [18:19] I would recognize floating window managers too, though I don't use i3's floating mode.
