compwhathi everyone, I'm still rather new to Xubuntu and would like to know how to enable the compositor (in Italian "compositore") of the windows manager that I seem to have disabled by chance01:28
compwhatI found guides that concern older versions of Xubuntu than mine01:29
Unit193Settings Manager > Window Manger Tweaks > Compositor01:29
Unit193Or in a terminal: xfconf-query -c xfwm4 -p /general/use_compositing -s true01:30
compwhatthank you! I finally found it!01:30
compwhatthanks ;) sorry for the noobness01:30
Unit193Sure.01:30

jeniaholstein, can you suggest one?02:12
jeniaI mean if you know02:12
holsteinnah.. i just use the defaults, or im in something much lighter..02:13
Unit193jenia: Newer versions of xfwm have that as a configurable option.02:16
jeniaUnit193, okay. nice thanks02:18

xubuntu52whello?16:04
knomeis it me you're looking for?16:04
xubuntu52wI wasnt looking for anyone specific.16:05
xubuntu52wI was looking for some answers to some questions I had.16:05
knomei was referring to the lionel richie song...16:05
knomebut ask your questions away16:06
xubuntu52wI see.16:06
xubuntu52wSo, I recently installed 14.1016:06
xubuntu52wAnd I did the full disk encryption...16:06
xubuntu52wAnd it doesnt appear to have setup a swap partition during the install16:06
xubuntu52wIs this "normal"?16:06
knomea swap partition is usually installed with a regular install, but i don't know about full disk encryption16:07
xubuntu52wSo, my question is... since I am using full disk encryption, does it create the partition inside the main encrypted partition? How does swap and full disk encryption work?16:09
akishi all. why i cannot see in gparted my swap file?16:44
cfhowlettakis, because swap is not a file, it's a partition16:45
akisi know what it is. but gparted does not show this partition.16:45
cfhowlettakis,  then you likely don't have one16:46
cfhowlett!swap | akis16:46
ubottuakis: swap is used to move unused programs and data out of main memory to make your system faster. It can also be used as extra memory if you don't have enough. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwapFaq for more info16:46
akisis it because whole xubuntu is enctypted?16:46
cfhowlettakis,  that could do it16:46
akisi have one because i got on startup the known issue that it cannot be mounted.16:47
akisi dont want to have swap file because i have 4gb ram, enough to run xubuntu16:47
cfhowlettakis, how big is your swap?16:48
akishere is my swap: Disk /dev/mapper/xubuntu--vg-swap_1 - 4173 MB / 3980 MiB (RO)16:48
akishow can i remove it?16:48
cfhowlettakis, command line16:49
akiswhen i didnt have the whole xubuntu encrypted i could resize my hda.16:49
akisusing gparted16:49
akisbut now i dont see it at all using gparted16:49
cfhowlettakis, remove the encryption first16:49
akisthat's more complicated16:50
cfhowlettakis, yep.  that's why I pointed you to fdisk16:51
akisis it anyway to make swap encrypted too or it is already as the whole xubuntu is encrypted? is any easy way to mount it at start up ? it is a known issue under not encrypted xubuntu and i didnt manage to make it encrypted but now it is a different thing16:53
cfhowlettakis, you said swap was encrypted? yes, swap is on at boot16:54
akisi dont know if it is. i am getting the known message that cannot be mounted16:55
cfhowlettakis, if it was me, I'd disable/remove swap, set the partitions the way I want, then re-enable swap.16:56
cfhowlettdisable encryption, fix swap, re-enable encryption          sorry116:57
cfhowlettBUT ... you could try this:  boot an ubuntu USB, run gparted, make your changes16:58
ter2I can't open the recovery menu.17:41
ter2i.e. the grub menu17:41
holsteinter2: the recovery kernel? you cant boot the recovery kernel?17:41
ter2no, i can't get into the grub menu17:41
ter2i'm trying to enter recovery mode but holding shift doesn't work17:41
holsteinif i had an issue with grub, my hard drive, or the ram, or some other component, i would expect that.. can you boot *anything*? a live iso? usb? etc..17:42
ter2i can boot into the OS17:43
ter2just fine17:43
ter2i just can't open the grub menu17:43
ter2i lost my password so i'm trying to get to the recovery console to change it17:43
holsteinter2: i'll set that setting in grub17:44
holstein!grub17:44
ubottuGRUB2 is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - For more information and troubleshooting for GRUB2 please refer to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub217:44
holsteinbut, you may not be able to save them, if you dont have your password..17:44
ter2i can't log in to change grub settings17:45
holsteinyou can always try booting a live iso, and changing those settings17:45
ter2i guess i could log in as the guest17:45
holstein!tty17:45
ubottuTo get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login).  To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution17:45
ter2i know about the tty17:45
ter2that's not going to help at all17:45
holsteinthough, you'll need the user pass17:45
holsteinit *can*, if you have the sudo pass, or a sudo password17:45
ter2there's only one account on the machine and root doesn't have a password iirc17:47
holsteinter2: chroot should be similar to this http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/reset-your-ubuntu-password-easily-from-the-live-cd/17:47
holsteinchroot reset from live environment17:47
ter2can't you press some key to get into the grub menu17:49
holsteinter2: yes. shift.. but you state that is not working17:50
ter2so why wouldn't that be working17:50
ter2am i getting the timing wrong17:50
holsteinter2: if its not working, you'll have to try something else.. again, i have seen that not show with some GPU drivers17:50
ter2perhaps.17:50
holsteinter2: with my via chip, i dont see it.. but, what i do for the "timing" is, i just tap shift.. *all* the time, after i power the machine on17:50
holsteinter2: if you dont see it, try setting the password with the live iso.. chroot.. cheers..17:51
holsteinyou can use #ubuntu if its slow here..17:51
ter2i don't have any problem doing that password reset17:53
ter2it's just a huge waste of time17:53
ter2ah, got it17:54
ter2had to press ESC17:54

James_EppHi everyone. I'm constructing my install of xubuntu to serve as a static setup to boot up, and display a website. Any recommendations you guys can make so that this system never goes down or behave differently? So far I have installed uncluttered to remove mouse rendering after an idle time, and disabled screenviewer and update notifications. Anything else can think of?21:25
James_Eppcorrection: installed unclutter [ http://sourceforge.net/projects/unclutter/ ]21:26
spicypixelprobably use a different distro21:58
=== dchilano_ is now known as dchilano
dchilanoif software is labeled as being debian-based, fedora-based, or slackware-based, it should not work in xubuntu, correct?22:28
knomewell, depends..22:28
Unit193Software being distro based specifically?22:28
dchilanoI'd like to install spideroak on my xubuntu box22:29
dchilanoand under linux it only offers those three options22:30
Unit193Generally speaking, that'd be Debian based then.22:30
knomexubuntu uses the debian package management system, so in that regard, xubuntu is debian-based22:31
dchilanoknome: thank you again!22:31
dchilanoUnit193: thank you as well22:31
Unit193Heh, sure.22:31
