vegaoneeI'm having issues with my wireless connection in Kubuntu 14.10 (Plasma 4). I sometimes loose the wireless connection to my router and can't get it back unless I reboot the computer. What can be the issue?11:54
vegaoneeI read that upgrading to kernel 3.17 might help, but I rather use the "official" kernel if possible.11:55
soee_vegaonee: hi, sorry but i never had such problem. Wait a bit and maybe others help you11:57
soee_vegaonee: also try asking on #ubuntu11:57
vegaoneesoee_: Thanks :) I will wait.11:57
vegaoneeWhat I can add: I don't think it's a DNS issue, as I can't even reconnect to the wireless network. And when I'm connected to it, everything is fine. I suddenly get disconnected to the network and can't connect back. This happens after a few hours of use of the distro.11:58

Walexvegaonee: some wireless drivers or wireless chips are buggy and eventually get in a "hung" state.12:21
Walexvegaonee: try to see if 'rmmod' of the driver and then 'modprobe' it back works instead of rebooting.12:22
vegaoneeWalex: That sounds reasonable.12:22
Walexvegaonee: or switch off wireless and then back on. But usually it takes a full driver reset.12:22
vegaoneeWalex: Any lasting solution?12:22
vegaoneeWalex: Yeah, just switching wireless on and off doesn't help. It just makes things worse I think.12:23
Walexvegaonee: change wireless hw? Extensive kernel debugging.12:23
vegaoneeWalex: What about kernel 3.17 upgrade?12:23
Walexvegaonee: a lot of wireless chip are badly designed and buggy. They work under MS-Windows only because the driver author gets told by the hw designer how to work around the bugs.12:23
vegaoneeI actually have a wireless card laying around. Maybe I plug it in and wait for a fix?12:23
Walexvegaonee: the same buggy-but-Windows-driver-knows-where happens a lot also to USB chips etc.12:24
vegaoneeWalex: I see. That sounds bad, since the laptop is brand new and I prefer to run Linux or BSD on it.12:24
Walexvegaonee: lots of Taiwanese etc. companies get chips designed by the lowest bidder12:24
vegaoneeWalex: It's an Asus computer.12:25
vegaoneeHaha :)12:25
Walexas one NASA astronaut one said before liftoff: I am sitting on a huge cylinder full of explosive and all I can think is that it was built by the lowest bidder12:25
Walexvegaonee: doing non-buuggy hw design is very difficult BTW.12:27
vegaoneeWalex: I see.12:27
vegaoneeWalex: Can you tell me more how to do this: "try to see if 'rmmod' of the driver and then 'modprobe' it back works instead of rebooting."?12:27
Walexvegaonee: ASUS stuff is usually good, but even they buy stuff from random people.12:27
vegaoneeWalex: Yeah, I have had pretty good experience with them and Linux.12:28
Walexvegaonee: you have to figure out which "module" name the driver has.12:28
Walexvegaonee: try 'lsmod | less' for any plausible names.12:28
vegaoneeWalex: Better grep that lsmod somehow12:29
Walexvegaonee: or use 'lspci' -n' to find the PCI id of the wireless and look it up in the '.map' files in the kernel modules directory12:29
vegaoneeWalex: This is a bit of a new territory for me. Hardware debugging...12:29
Walexvegaonee: no, it is "system integration", and it is not easy.12:30
vegaoneeAnyway, what about installing a proprietary driver?12:30
Walexvegaonee: one cannot put components together and expect that they "just work". Specs are ambiguous, designs are buggy, ...12:30
Walexvegaonee: probably a lot buggier.12:30
vegaoneeOr plugging in the other network card and take it back out? Wouldn't that restart some service ?12:30
Walexvegaonee: it is not the service, it is driver state or the firmware state of the device.12:31
vegaoneeWalex: Ah, okay.12:31
Walexvegaonee: I have a USB 3G modem by Huawaei, sometimes I need to unplug the device itself, so it resets its firmware state, sometimes I just 'rmmod' and 'modprobe' again its driver.12:31
vegaoneeWalex: What about restarting the network manager to see it that might be the issue?12:32
Walexvegaonee: sometimes it works for a day without needing reset, sometimes it is quite frequent.12:32
vegaoneeWalex: Yeah, that sounds like the issue.12:32
vegaoneeWalex: Like my issue*12:33
Walexvegaonee: it is *unlikely* that it is the NetworkManager, but restarting it might help.12:33
vegaoneeWalex: What network manager do Kubuntu 14.10 use?12:33
vegaoneeWalex: The package name.12:33
Walexvegaonee: sometimes it is the WiFi (or 3G network) that causes trouble, because the WiFi AP might emit slightly nonstandard network frames that trigger bugs in the device firmware.12:34
Walexvegaonee: the package name has got no relationship to starting or stopping the NetworkManager.12:34
Walexvegaonee: and I don't use it, so I don't know.12:35
vegaoneeWalex: Ah, okay.12:36
vegaoneeWalex: Yeah, I sometimes get back the connection by restarting the router.12:36
vegaoneeWalex: But it works on other devices without a restart I think. So that is not the main issue I guess.12:36
vegaoneeWalex: Thanks a lot for your help! :)12:38
vegaoneeWalex: But I don't get the wanted output from rmmod by the way.12:39
Walexvegaonee: ahhh, so it is a buggy chip-router interaction. Too bad, not all client and routers chips are compatible with each other.12:41
vegaoneeWalex: Idk, with this driver at least, under Linux. Not in Windows. So I guess :)12:42
vegaoneeWalex: Gah, I'm even failing trying to restart the network manager. Do you know the proper command for it?12:44

jamil_1hello all18:23
jamil_1no answer from #ubuntu18:24
jamil_1kubuntu is suddenly refusing to boot, in grub rescue doing ls (hd0,4) shows nothing, though ls (hd0,2) lists files in that partition18:24
jamil_14 is the boot partition, 2 is another ext2 partition18:25
jstoreyDid you change something before kubuntu failed?18:27
jamil_1jstorey: didn't change anything18:28
jstoreyIt's possible that you have a bad disk.18:31
jamil_1jstorey: what should I do ?18:32
jstoreyYou could try reinstalling. If it's only bad sectors, reinstall should allow you to reformat and lock out bad sectors.18:33
jstoreyOf course, that would destroy any data on the disk, which may not be desireable.18:34
jamil_1jstorey: how about boot through usb drive and reinstall grub ?18:34
jstoreyWhat I do, in a case where I suspect a bad disk, is to add a new disk, reinstall, then mount the old disk to attempt to recover whatever files I can.18:35
jstoreyjamil_1: that's an option18:35
jstoreyI've never actually had a situation where reinstalling grub helped. Of course, that's a good thing to try.18:36
jamil_1jstorey: I am on a laptop so can't just add a new disk18:37
BluesKajjamil_1, I've had boot-repair work for me after an upgrade that broke grub, either that or grub instal from livbe media will usually work18:39
BluesKajscuse the typos18:39
jstoreyHirens boot cd has worked for me a couple of times.18:39
jstoreyit's pretty good at finding and fixing corrupted partition tables.18:40
jstoreyThere are several others.18:40
jstoreyWhen my laptop drive started throwing enough errors to make it unbootable, I put in a new drive, reinstalled, then bought an adapter that allowed me to mount the old drive via usb.18:41
jstoreyIt's just a small block that you plug your drive into, then plug the usb into your laptop.18:41
jstoreyOf course, I've had enough problems with bad disks, that I now just make sure my important files are all backed up to a cloud service.18:42
jstoreyThen, at the first hint of bad disk, I replace it, reinstall, and recover important files.18:42
jstoreyI consider the hard drive as a disposable commodity.18:43
jamil_1jstorey: I hope its not because of bad sectors18:43
jstoreyI hope not, as well. Confused partitions are much easier to fix.18:44
jstoreybad sectors make for a bad day.18:44
jstoreyHere's an article that points to some good rescue cd's. Maybe you'll find a solution there. http://lifehacker.com/5984707/five-best-system-rescue-discs18:45
jamil_1jstorey: oh thanks, I have a bootable usb drive that I'm going to use18:46
jstoreyGood luck.18:46
jstoreyI'm new to irc. How are you causing your responses to be directed to me?18:48
jstoreyI mean, I get an alert, so you must be doing something to cause that. Right?18:49
wookwindows 10 is coming back...and now...20 years later...we're back to...AmigaWorkbench!18:50

=== rom1504_ is now known as rom1504

Walexyu_: maybe there is no free space left.21:16
Walexyu_: with systems that are mostly "open" it is never necessary to reinstall, one just fixes the problem.21:16
Walexyu_: but that require having some system administration skill. System that have hundreds of components and dozens of service daemons built out of them don't "just work" forever. Whether they are GNU/Linux or MS-Windows or Mac OSX or even iOS or Android.21:17
