zottaI noticed unusually high OUTGOING traffic. It sems to have something to do with a program called ntpd10:32
zottaIs that normal? Does that mean the box was hacked?10:33

lordievaderNtp can be used for DDoS attacks.10:37
zottaIt does not seem to have much impact on the server so far. just the traffic graphs look unusual.10:41

tvwI have a boot problem. Since the last update of my Ubuntu 14.04 server it stops booting with the message, that it cannot find the root-disk with the given UUID. It stops in initramfs. When I then make a blkid or a ls /dev/disk/by-uuid, the missing drive is there. I also can mount it, when I start a rescue system from cd.17:46
tvwThen I booted the server with editing the boot parameters and set root= from root=UUID=... to root=/dev/sda3. Now it boots.17:48
tvwAny idea, why it does not find the disk, when using UUID?17:48

Jeroen1Hi there, who can help me? I'm running my website on a ubuntu server but the problem is that my database has gone offline. How can I get it online again?20:17
guntbertJeroen1: what do the logs say?20:18
Jeroen1how do I get them guntbert?20:20
Jeroen1Just a little bid in panic :p20:20
Jeroen1and I'm noob in this.20:20
guntbertJeroen1: panic doesn't help any --- cool down :-)20:21
guntbertwhat database is it? mysql?20:21
Jeroen1Yes20:22
Jeroen1I can get on the phpmyadmin page20:22
Jeroen1but when I try to login I get this error: #2002 Cannot login to MYSQL-Server20:22
Jeroen1Well it's installed with Nginx but I don't know exactly how they did it as someone else installed the server and I cannot reach that person. :/20:23
guntbertJeroen1: don't you have ssh access?20:23
Jeroen1I'm now in the server on root.20:24
Jeroen1Is there a way I can see the logs?20:24
guntbertJeroen1: now look into /var/log/mysql.log20:24
Jeroen1what is the command in Ubuntu again? :/20:25
sarnoldless is nice20:25
guntbertJeroen1: less /var/log/mysql.log20:25
Jeroen1clean20:26
guntbertJeroen1: try     sudo service mysql staus20:27
guntbertJeroen1: try     sudo service mysql status20:27
Jeroen1stop/waiting20:27
guntbertJeroen1:      sudo service mysql start20:27
Jeroen1You're my hero! Thank you very much.20:28
Jeroen1:D20:28
sarnold-please- do take the time to investigate why it died. it's worth finding.20:28
guntbertsarnold: +1!!20:28
sarnoldit'd be best to avoid this kind of panic again :)20:28
Jeroen1But is this normal? mysql start/running, proess 1716820:29
sarnoldJeroen1: that output is norming, but mysql stopping is not normal.20:29
sarnoldJeroen1: check dmesg output in addition to the mysql logs20:29
Jeroen1how do I get there?20:29
sarnoldJeroen1: dmesg | less20:29
Jeroen1ok well that doesn't make any sense to me.20:30
Jeroen1How do I know if something is wrong? :p20:30
sarnoldJeroen1: head towards the very bottom; the first few hundred lines are normally of use only when debugging boot problems20:31
guntbertJeroen1: another hint: really do use the nick of a person you are talking to - that way they get alerted when you say something - we are often reading many channels and doing  something else as well20:31
sarnoldJeroen1: but if there's e.g. disk errors or segmentation violations near the end, you might find something useful20:31

hallynjdstrand: hey, running qa-regression-tests test-libvirt.py, i get failures and skipped tests unless the 'deny /tmp...' rules are commented out in /etc/apparmor.d/abstractions/libvirt-qemu22:12
hallynthis is per bug lp#140364822:12
hallyn  #deny /tmp/{,**} r,22:12
hallyn  #deny /var/tmp/{,**} r,22:12
=== Fun1 is now known as Fun
hallyniiuc commenting those out should NOT add any new permissions right?22:12
hallynonly silence denials.  so im' confused22:13
jdstrandhallyn: that's right, unless the test itself is adding them for some reason22:25
jdstrandwhich is plausible last time we chatted22:25
hallynhm22:26
jdstrandhallyn: oh wait, can you post a denial?22:28
hallynno22:30
hallynwill do so once i reset things22:31
hallynjdstrand: sorry...  i guess i'll pin gyou tomorrow :)22:33
hallyn(there are 3 perplexing sources of numbers of failures right now;  that's one of them)22:33

hallynjdstrand: odd, installed auditd, not a single DENIED msg in audit.log22:44
jdstrandcan you put 'audit' in front22:45
jdstrandhallyn: I should have mentioned that22:46
jdstrand'audit deny /tmp...'22:46
hallynk22:47
jdstrandhallyn: actually, I need to head out, but I'll check backscroll22:47
hallynjdstrand: ok but i thought having them commented out would make the denials show up22:48
hallynok, will paste when i get results - thanks22:48
hallynjdstrand: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10061827/ has the list.23:18
hallynso three of them are from a test trying to save state to a file called "state" under /tmp23:19
hallynfour23:20
hallynthe other three are a storage pool test.23:20
hallynso i guess we just need ot update those paths in qrt23:20
hallynor just update profile from qrt to allow those paths.23:21
