xubuntu430Hello, could I ask a question?01:07
knomego ahead01:07
xubuntu430I actually have a problem, I ran /sudo apt-get install nvidia-current, and the boot screen no longer shows up. It's not a big problem, but I was wondering what was causing it.01:08
knomeproprietary nvidia drivers do not like plymouth, so if you're using one, you'll likely not see it01:09
xubuntu430Okay.01:09
knomeanyway it's nothing to worry about01:09
xubuntu430Thank you for the answer :)01:10
knomeno problem, enjoy xubuntu01:10
dalebertLooking for help with Screensaver on 14.04. Been running 32 bit version for a couple of years and set up a system with the 64-bit version. The GLText screen was working but I made a change to what I wanted it to display and it broke. Can't even launch it to work on it. Tried uninstalling it completely and reinstalling but no luck. Stumped...02:50

vivek_malhotraanyone still awake??05:33
vivek_malhotraI had a quick question05:33
vivek_malhotraDoes Xubuntu 14.10 still use Xfce 4.10?05:34
vivek_malhotrawhen is Xfce 4.12 coming out05:34
vivek_malhotradevelopment is crazy-slow05:34
vivek_malhotraI like Xfce a lot05:34
Unit193vivek_malhotra: Xubuntu has been using the development releases (4.11, which is really pre-4.12) for a while now.  What do you base "development is slow" on?  The mailing list?  The git commits?  Neither seem slow to me.05:59
Unit193And, 4.12 should be out soon™05:59
vivek_malhotraUnit193: fair enough, I base it on the mailing list mostly.06:07
vivek_malhotrahow can I tell which Xfce version I'm running?06:08
Unit193Generally the applications respond to --version, and inxi -S is another way.06:10
vivek_malhotramousepad --version  gave me 0.3.006:11
vivek_malhotraokay, "inxi -S" gave me 4.11.606:11
vivek_malhotraI'm running Xubuntu 14.0406:11
vivek_malhotrawith all the latest updates06:11
Unit193Mousepad is a seperate application, developed by Xfce devs (basically.)06:12
Unit193dpkg -l | grep xfce works too. :P06:12
vivek_malhotraWhat's an example of an Xfce application that'll give me the version number?06:12
vivek_malhotrayeah dpkg too06:12
Unit193xfdesktop, xfwm4, xfce4-panel, etc.06:13
Unit193Those are somwhat core.06:13
vivek_malhotraokay, thanks06:13
Unit193Sure.06:14
vivek_malhotraAre you based in Ohio? It's quite late there...06:22
vivek_malhotraUnit193: Are you based in Ohio? It's quite late there...06:22
Unit193Pardon?06:23
vivek_malhotraUnit193: Are you based in Ohio? It's quite late there...06:23
Unit193Yes, you already said that.  Don't see how that's relevent to Xubuntu support, but sure.06:24
vivek_malhotraIt's not. Don't be so uptight. I was just going to say thanks for helping me so late in the evening. It's well past midnight for you.06:25
Unit193Well, you're welcome.06:26
vivek_malhotraAgain, thanks for all that you do for the Xubuntu community. Xubuntu has really been a huge help for me, and I really rely on it for my work.06:29
vivek_malhotraI rely on it as a home desktop, but also for my work in software development and engineering06:29
vivek_malhotraA few more questions while we're here....06:30
vivek_malhotraWhen is Mir supposed to be included in a release? 15.04? I welcome a replacement for X Windows, but I'm nervous the transuition will be messy06:31
vivek_malhotraIt'll take until the end of the decade, I think, for the Linux world to migrate from X Windows to Wayland/Mir...06:31
vivek_malhotraWhat are your thoughts, Unit193?06:32
Unit193Xfce isn't going to it any time soon, so as to Ubuntu/Unity, there's already an 'desktop-next' unity8 slated for sometime around the next LTS.06:33
vivek_malhotraI see06:35
vivek_malhotraAnother thing... I'm running Xubuntu 14.04. I know Firefox updates regularly, and the updates always include the latest version as soon as it's released. But for other apps, like LibreOffice or HexChat, I'm stuck on an older release. How can I obtain newer versions of these softwares?06:36
vivek_malhotraUnit193: I'm wondering if I'm simply stuck, or if I can still get the latest version somehow06:36
vivek_malhotraUnit193: For example, I'm running HexChat 2.9.6, which is what is used in Xubuntu 14.04. But the latest HexChat is 2.10.2. How can I upgrade to that?06:37
vivek_malhotraUnit193: For example, I'm running HexChat 2.9.6, which is what is used in Xubuntu 14.04. But the latest HexChat is 2.10.2. How can I upgrade to that?07:49
baizonvivek_malhotra: use the hexchat ppa https://launchpad.net/~gwendal-lebihan-dev/+archive/ubuntu/hexchat-stable07:51
vivek_malhotrabaizon: thanks a lot07:52
vivek_malhotrawhat about other apps, like LibreOffice07:52
vivek_malhotraI don't want to have to compile that sucker from source!07:52
baizonvivek_malhotra: well if you want the latest software, i would recommend to use xubuntu 14.10, not the lts07:55
baizonvivek_malhotra: but back to your question, here is the libreoffice ppa https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa07:56
vivek_malhotrabaizon: you're probably right08:00
vivek_malhotrabaizon: thanks for your help08:00
cfhowlettvivek_malhotra, bleeding edge is bloody.  Unless you truly NEED the latest, greatest, shiny stuff, you *might* want to reconsider you priorities.  LTS means WAY fewer installation/maintenance headaches.  Choose wisely.08:10
vivek_malhotracfhowlett: how so? I though the 14.10 release was quite stable and well-received.08:11
vivek_malhotracfhowlett: how so? I heard that the 14.10 release was quite stable and well-received.08:11
cfhowlettvivek_malhotra, supported for 9 months.  9 MONTHS.08:12
vivek_malhotracfhowlett: right... it's just that some of the software in LTS releases get a bit stale08:19
cfhowlettvivek_malhotra, true.  as I said: choose wisely.  also: sudo apt-get dist-upgrade08:19
vivek_malhotracfhowlett: okay thanks08:20
vivek_malhotracfhowlett: i think i'll just jump over to Windows 808:20
vivek_malhotracfhowlett: just kidding!!08:20

GeekDudeUnit193: Turns out I couldn't ping it by hostname anymore because I enabled the firewall and didn't add a rule for it. I'll just leave the firewall off, the one on our router is more than adequate15:31
xubuntu60wHi. After a fresh install of 14.10 my panel is slow (~3-5 seconds) to load the theme. It's not a big deal but it is annoying. Gnome and KDE services are off at startup and additinal startup items are minimal. Anyone have any suggestions?15:33
bazhangtry a different theme, is that slow as well15:49
xubuntu60wwell, it's greybird so it should be quick considering it's the default, but I'll give it a try. thanks.16:00
xubuntu60wHi. Panel theme (greybird) is loading slowly on login/restart on a new install of 14.10. I've tried switching to a different theme. Autostart items are at a minimum and gnome/KDE services are off. Any thoughts?16:16
GeekDude... didn't you just ask that a minute ago?16:19
GeekDudeanyways, I don't have any idea, I'm just a noob16:19
brainwashxubuntu60w: create ~/.gtkrc-2.0 and add this line: gtk-theme-name = "Greybird"16:34
xubuntu60w@brainwash: thanks---I'll give that a try now.16:36
brainwashthe actual question is: why does xfsettingsd launch slow/delayed in your case? it's responsible for the appearance settings16:36
brainwashor why does the panel start before xfsettingsd16:37
brainwashxubuntu60w: would be helpful to know if this problem also affects other user accounts or the quest session16:38
xubuntu60wYeah, that's what I was wondering. I've tried manually restarting it. No change. It's not a huge deal, but it is annoying. 3-5 seconds of light grey panel before it kicks in. Looks janky, but not the end of the world.16:38
xubuntu60wQuest session? Sorry, I'm not exactly a power user. I'm the only user account account.     .gtkrc-2.0 was in /~, but was empty. Going to edit it now and try logging back in. BRB.16:41
brainwashxubuntu60w: I meant Guest Session16:45
xubuntu60w@brainwash: adding that line to .gtkrc-2.0 did the trick. BIG thanks. The panel is loading nice and quick again after login and full restart.16:47
brainwashthat's great :)16:47
xubuntu60wha. quest =guest, I feel silly for not catching that.16:48
xubuntu60wAnyways thanks again :)16:48
brainwashfound this report  bug 138274116:49
ubottubug 1382741 in xubuntu-default-settings (Ubuntu) "Qt apps are displaying a very old styled theme as oppose to greybird" [Undecided,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/138274116:49
brainwashthe report describes your problem, but it's not the main issue16:49
brainwashso it was ignored16:49
brainwash"This also happens during right after login: xfce4-panel is all grey and what not, eventually switching to greybird, however (after 5s or so)."16:50
xubuntu60wyeah, that sounds exactly like what it was doing.16:50
xubuntu60wlike I said -- not a huge deal -- but annoying enough to hop on IRC and ask around.16:51
brainwashdo you have a launchpad account? you could create a separate report16:51
brainwashand also mention the workaround16:52
brainwashyeah, it looks like something that may affect only a small amount of people. still worth fixing it at some point :)16:52
xubuntu60wI can set one up and create a report. looks like it's fixed for 15.04. https://www.mail-archive.com/xubuntu-dev@lists.launchpad.net/msg02958.html16:53
brainwashno, the themeing problem with Qt apps is fixed16:54
xubuntu60wAh, there I go skimming things again.16:54
brainwashbut not the problem with the delay on session start16:54
brainwashheh :)16:54
xubuntu60wcool. gonna make another pot of coffee. I'll file a report right after that. thanks again BW :)16:56
Unit193GeekDude: Aha, yeah that'd do it.  Other than a few iptables rules I just use the router too, it serves that use well.18:10
GeekDudeThe print server is working great, at least. I managed to AirPrint from it without any additional configuration!18:10
BuddyButterflyhi guys.18:29
BuddyButterflyfirst, thanks for the great slimline OS!18:29
BuddyButterflyI am using it right now successfully in VMs in Xen.18:29
BuddyButterfly Yesterday I tried to install it in kvm with spice. Unfortunately xubuntu is not usable in this scenario. Graphics is slow and sometimes complete fonts are crippled (all headlines, menu entries etc.) which renders it unusable. Any Idea, why this happens? Xubuntu 14.10 even does not start at all after installation. Where 14.04 does. I did a check with Kubuntu, which works nicely with the same VM settings.18:31
