clitjesmorning guys, haven't seen the porting guide yet could you maybe link me a draft? I'm currently trying to do this with the old guide and some common sense06:15
jrgso the 2nd batch sold out already? heh06:34
jrgjust curious but does the uk model support US freqs and just isn't being sold here? or doesn't support a US network at all ?06:34
svijjrg: it only supports 2G in the US06:34
jrgdamn :(06:35
jrgah well. guess use yokels will just have to wait06:35
jrgi feel like a teenager who is mad that all the cool ps4 games go to japan first :/06:35

svijjrg: I always feel like that, when all the services starts in US and not in the EU ;)06:40
jrghaha06:43
jrgah well. at least by the time it gets here they'd have ironed out all the bugs :)06:44
jrgit isn't like ad-droid started out with a smooth launch or anythign else for that matter06:44
jrgi remember my HTC G1 ... and people still bought the just because of the google hype06:44
jrgit was awful heh06:44
jrgso does this one support the docking feature that was supposed to be a thing?06:45
jrgwhere you can connect it to a dock and it runs unity?06:45
svijjrg: no06:56

mardypopey: hi! About bug 1420743, was that a new account you created while logging in?13:18
ubot5bug 1420743 in Ubuntu Reminders app "Signing in to evernote hangs forever" [Critical,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/142074313:18
popeymardy: no, existing account13:20
mardypopey: thanks. What is the "local mode"?13:22
popeymardy: the new version of reminders can work without online accounts13:23
popeyi.e. with no need for evernote account13:23
mardypopey: do you know some internal detail about it? Does it work on setting some flag on the library, or are there some config files being read to toggle that behaviour?13:24
mardypopey: I suspect that it might be that the evernote toolkit is being told not to connect to the internet, and because of that reason, fetching the username fails13:26
popeyhang on..13:26
popeyI am not using reminders13:26
popeyI am _only_ going to online accounts and trying to add an evernote account13:26
mardypopey: yes, but the evernote account plugin loads a binary module, which IIRC comes from the evernote toolkit13:27
popeyright, but that's the same as the one from previous releases13:27
mardypopey: we rely on that to get the account username, after the OAuth process has completed13:27

seb128kenvandine, well, maybe it's not a segfault15:15
seb128it seems to exit15:15
seb128not sure why15:15

kenvandineall the tests passed here15:16
plarskenvandine: we were talking to elopio about that on irc when it happened. It seemed like either there was some kind of race, or else autopilot/ubuntu-app-launch was failing to see that the app started15:16
kenvandineplars, yeah... but... system-settings isn't using upstart-app-launch15:17
kenvandineit's using the other helper to start it15:17
kenvandineelopio had been suggesting i switch that a while back15:17

kenvandinenot for settings15:17
plarsah15:17
plarsok15:17
kenvandinethe other apps do15:17
kenvandineit's not all that simple for settings to change, it turned into a little more work15:18
plarsso perhaps that's why it has this problem and the others do not?15:18
kenvandineplars, anyway, so we can rule out ubuntu-app-launch for settings15:18
kenvandineplars, well camera-app was having the problem too15:18
kenvandineplars, and this is a new problem, which i can't reproduce on my device15:19

kenvandineunless he was talking about camera-app15:20
jgdxkenvandine, not that I recall by looking at the artifacts.15:21
jgdxseb128, kenvandine, but yeah, everything points to security panel tests. We recently added the sim unlock (c++ binding), which might cause this.15:23

dpmElleo, someone is asking me about how predictive text works in Ubuntu, but how the OSK works is a bit blurry to myself too, so I thought I'd ask you for the basics. So for starters, ubuntu-keyboard is a plugin for maliit, right? And we're using upstream maliit as a framework?16:38
Elleodpm: yep, and for predictive text we're using presage in our maliit plugin: http://presage.sourceforge.net/16:39
Elleodpm: as well as getting some extra suggestions from hunspell16:39
Elleodpm: except for pinyin, for which we use libpinyin16:39
dpmElleo, ah, thanks. Is the maliit framework (or server?) still active as a project? I had heard they weren't much16:40
Elleodpm: there's been a bit more activity recently (mostly courtesy of the Jolla folks I think), but it's not massively active16:41
wxlElleo: does system-image-cli work the same way?16:42
dpmElleo, so how does presage work in relationship to maliit? Is it also a plugin? Is it shipped as part of maliit or is it a separate package?16:42
Elleodpm: presage is a separate package and it doesn't have any direct relation to maliit; we just use it in our own maliit plugin (ubuntu-keyboard)16:43
Elleodpm: although I think it might be used in one of the maliit example plugins (which looks like it pulled in some stuff from ubuntu-keyboard a while back)16:43
Elleowxl: according to --help system-image-cli should work normally, but it doesn't seem to return anything16:44

popeywow, internet is expensive in USA!18:56
mhall119yes :(18:56
wxlverizon has some interesting options, but the thing that's weird is that the pre-paid minutes expire18:56
wxldumb18:57
mhall119I could get it cheaper on a contract plan, but I like the non-commitment of pre-paid18:57
mhall119wxl: also Verizon won't let you use a GSM phone18:57
wxlmhall119: you using your ubuntu device as your main phone?18:57
wxloh boo18:57
mhall119wxl: yup, Nexus 4, has been my daily driver for 1.5 years now18:57
wxlcool18:58
wxlmhall119: so verizon wouldn't let you use a nexus 4 even though it is compatibel with umts if it's also compatible with gsm?!18:59
mhall119nope19:00
wxlthat's freaking dumb. they must have dropped 2g altogether, huh?19:00
wxlpopey: on the other hand, we're spoiled by 4g. we're just behind south korea, japan, and australia for 4g penetration (well, in 2013 at least)19:02
popey4g is even more ridiculously expensive :)19:02
popeyI live on a tiny island where wifi is common :)19:03
wxlyep but it soooooooooooo fast :)19:03
wxlthat's cool19:03
sverzegnassi45$/month... I'll never sound off about Italian providers19:03
wxlmunicipal wifi hasn't really caught on in the us19:03
popeythere is a bandstand in the park near me which has free wifi in it19:03
wxlwe have some really terrible wifi in eugene in select places, mostly near municipal buildings19:03
popeypeople congregate round the bandstand, not to hear the band, but for the wifi19:03
wxlhahahah19:04

ataalikHello,  just gonna repeat the question here first " we are looking to hold a conference on mobile technologies and development and want to possibly invite someone from canonical to talk about Ubuntu Phone. Do you have any idea who should I contact"19:38
popeyyes, what country and when?19:39
popeyI'm guessing Turkey?19:39
ataalikYeah it will be in Turkey on 17-19 April19:40
popeydrop me an email with some more details of the event and I'll ask around on monday and see if we can find someone. - alan@canonical.com19:41
ataalikSplendid, thank you Alan.19:42
dobeywxl: if you want a cheap US SIM, i'd suggest t-mobile. verizon and sprint are cdma carriers, so don't have SIM cards btw19:42
popeyataalik: no problem, have a good weekend.19:43
slvn_popey, about the "browser". I am sure I understand your answer. I am developping apps nin C/C++. I want to open an url from my app. I would do in C code.  execlp("/usr/bin/xdg-open", "xdg-open", url, 0)   . that would be great if this could work on ubuntu smartphone/tablet19:47
slvn_I am not sure..19:47
dobeyslvn_: there is no xdg-open on the phone19:52
dobeyslvn_: are you not using Qt?19:52
wxldobey: hm seems tmobile don't play with nexus 4's19:53
wxlalthough it was using t-mobile in the uk19:53
dobeywxl: what do you mean? i have t-mobile on my nexus 5 using ubuntu and it works fine19:54
dobeywxl: you do need to change from ipv6 to ip on the APN though19:54
wxldobey: search for nexus 4 here http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/sim-card19:54
dobeywxl: yes, it lists a few nexus 4 options19:55
wxldobey: yes but they're 4g which this isn't19:56
slvn_dobey, no, not using Qt, but SDL. An Api to open an URL in a browser would be nice. It can be done in android, ios, etc.  I would be nice to have it on ubuntu phone. It would even greater if it could be "xdg-open" because on desktop, it can be done this way.19:56
dobeywxl: yes it is. you just don't have the radio firmware that enables it. all nexus 4s had 4g disabled via radio firmware update long ago19:56
dobeywxl: you need a fairly old radio firmware to enable 4g. kenvandine just enabled it on his the other day :)19:56
wxlokie dokie19:56
dobeyslvn_: the official toolkit provides an api to open a link.19:57
dobeymeh i wish speedtest.net would drop flash19:59
wxlhuh cool19:59
wxlvirgin mobile has customs plans19:59
dobeywxl: are you based in the us or the uk?20:00
wxldobey: us20:00
wxloh but you're right t-mobile *IS* better20:00
dobeywxl: definitely recommend t-mo then, especially if you travel overseas much.20:00
wxlpay as you go is as little as $420:01
wxl$3 that is20:01
dobeywell, 1GB of 4G and unlimited everything else and 3G is $50/mo. that's global data. calls when roaming are also pretty cheap20:02
cwaynetmo overseas is like the greatest thing of all time20:02
dobeyplus t-mo has unlimited 4G for some music streaming services like spotify/grooveshark20:03
wxldobey: yeah once i hack it to work :)20:03
slvn_dobey, Well I can't find this api... do you have an url ?20:03
kenvandinedobey, wxl: not old... it's a hybrid lte firmware from xda20:04
anpokslvn_: something like that? https://developer.ubuntu.com/en/apps/platform/guides/url-dispatcher-guide/20:05
kenvandinewxl, http://people.canonical.com/~kenvandine/mako_hybrid_104_33.zip20:05
dobeyslvn_: http://doc.qt.io/qt-5/qdesktopservices.html#openUrl or the link anpok provided20:05
dobeywell it says to use the one i linked, so there :)20:06
kenvandinewxl,  you also need to set OFONO_RIL_RAT_LTE in /etc/init/ofono.override20:07
dobeyoh right, i still need to do that20:07
kenvandinedobey, my 4g is working great now!20:07
wxlkenvandine: dude, you need to blog this stuff20:08
wxlor if you're feeling really dangerous, put it on the wiki XD20:08
* wxl is ordering a sim card20:08
kenvandinewxl, so in that zip file, you need to flash modem.img with fastbook20:09
kenvandinefastboot  flash radio modem.img20:09
dobeycwayne: oh, did tmo work in china, or you had to get a cmc or something local sim?20:09
kenvandinewhile in the bootloader20:09
cwayneworked in china20:09
dobeysweet20:09
cwaynedobey: ^ like a charm20:09
slvn_dobey, anpok yes that's it. thanks. the only drawback is that I will now require Qt. Have "xdg-open" would have been easier for C/C++ application.20:09
dobeyslvn_: like i said, that is not the official toolkit. so even if it were on the device, it would not necessarily be supported20:10
slvn_dobey, ok!20:12
* wxl didn't even realize touch supported 4g. that's pretty cool.20:15
kenvandinemzanetti, ping20:35
kenvandinemzanetti, i don't think i have a way to test seb128's bluetooth-key-hint-workaround branch, it's in silo 23 if you have time to give it a quick test20:36

simosxOh, my bq phone does not boot again. I tried to reboot and it appears dead (nothing is shown on screen). When connected to laptop, it shows up at 'lsusb'. Any recovery/factory reset steps?22:58
geniiis adb devices  or fastboot devices  showing anything?23:01
simosx# adb devices23:02
simosxList of devices attached23:02
simosxZZ001219offline23:02
simosx'fastboot devices' does not show something.23:02
wxltechnically `fastboot devices` does nothing for me either23:03
wxlsimosx: did you try booting while being plugged in?23:04
simosxwxl, tried booting both plugged in and unplugged. Did not work. The phone did not discharge or something; I just rebooted it.23:06
wxlsimosx: not having one of these, do you have a way to remove the battery?23:06
simosxwxl, I think the battery cannot be removed.23:06
wxlbummer23:06
Jsewill_Hello all.  Does anyone know anything about when the new porting guide will be available?23:07
simosxthere is a tiny hole at the back, near the flash. Is that a discharge/reset button?23:07
wxlJsewill_: from what i've seen, it's in the review process and it should be out in the next few weeks or so.23:07
Jsewill_Oh, that's great!23:07
Jsewill_Just what I was hoping to hear.23:07
Jsewill_Thanks.23:07
wxlJsewill_: this was recently discussed on the mailing list, if you're not already on it23:07
Jsewill_I should do join that.23:08
wxlJsewill_: indeed23:08
wxlJsewill_: what device you thinking about?23:08
Jsewill_OnePlus One, codename bacon.23:08
wxlooh fun23:09
Jsewill_And whatever other devices I find myself wanting attempt to port to.23:09
wxlhehehe23:09
simosxis there a way to invoke the recovery on the bq?23:09
wxlJsewill_: actually looking at the message again, it looks like it will be the next few days! https://lists.launchpad.net/ubuntu-phone/msg11161.html23:10
cwaynesimosx: i think that's a microphone not a button23:10
Jsewill_AH!  Awesome.23:10
cwaynesimosx: I think your best option is to press + hold vol up + power for like 10 seconds to force a hard reboot23:10
wxlthat sounds like a good idea cwayne23:11
wxlthere's usually something funky like that on phones23:11
cwayneer, let me double check that that's the right key combo23:11
wxlwell youo don't have many keys to work with! XD23:11
cwayne:)23:11
cwayneyeah vol up + power gets you to recovery23:12
simosxcwayne, ok, the phone is back and alive 8-). It rebooted succesfully.23:12
cwayne:)23:12
wxlyay simosx23:13
cwayneglad to help23:13
wxlwhen in doubt, slam on all the buttons23:13
cwaynelol23:15
simosxit's not clear how it managed to reboot. I pressed the power button a few times, and kept pressing it, then had a look at dmesg (host computer), and the phone just came up.23:15
simosxNext time will try to figure out how to bring it up.23:16
cwaynegenerally with the bq holding the power for a long time (10 sec or so) does the trick23:17
* simosx just pushed to the phone a helloworld app with QtCreator. Nice.23:33
