=== bazhang_ is now known as bazhang
Evil_Erici hate to ask such a simple question but i installed something that aint working and need ro remove it i used a installer but no ppa for it can anyone help xubuntu 14.04 LTS03:01
bazhanginstalled how03:05
bazhangand what wa s the exact package03:06
Evil_Ericmehhh never mind i figured there was a simple /sudo whatever command03:12
bazhangall set then Evil_Eric ?03:22
Evil_Ericyeah it was in a folder im my home directory03:22
Evil_Ericso now im just busting it out 1 pieca at a time03:23
bazhangwhat was the package, just out of curiousity03:23
Evil_Ericpia_manager my vpn's beta installer package03:24
Evil_Ericlike i tried to explain abouve03:25
xubuntu29wI have a question about using .xsession or .xinitrc with Xubuntu. Could anyone help?03:25
Evil_Erici figured you wouldnt need all this info just to uninstall something03:25
bazhangdepends entirely on what was installed, and the method used03:25
Evil_Ericfigured there was just a /sudo apt-get remove then package name to get rid of it03:26
Evil_Erici just explained all that a min ago03:26
bazhangif apt does not know about it, then that wont work03:26
bazhangcheckinstall can be helpful in certain cases, though not this one03:26
bazhang!checkinstall03:26
ubottucheckinstall is a wrapper to "make install", useful for installing programs you compiled. It will create a .deb package, which will be listed in the APT database and can be uninstalled like other packages. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CheckInstall - Read the warnings at the top and bottom of that web page, and DO NOT interrupt CheckInstall while it's running!03:26
Evil_Ericit was installed with the installer and no ppa was installed i mean how mmuch more english can i get03:27
bazhangppa's are actually much easier to manage in that regard with ppa-purge03:28
Evil_Ericyeah i know that03:28
bazhangand asking simple questions on how something was installed are a very basic , normal step in helping troubleshoot issues03:28
Evil_Ericbut like i said its a installer not a ppa03:28
bazhangas there are many different type such installers, the case was not clear03:29
bazhang .sh for example03:29
Evil_Ericyeah03:29
Evil_Ericthats exactally what type it was03:30
bazhangnetwork manager should have a way to manage vpn03:30
bazhangthus obviating the need to go outside package management03:31
Evil_Ericyeah it does i was just messin with the beta installer of it checking it out03:31
bazhanga vbox is great for testing stuff; personally I would be very careful about using it on a personal desktop set up03:32

xubuntu29wI'm trying to setup uim in Xubuntu, and according to the instructions I'm reading I need to set some environment variables in either ~/.xsession, ~/.xinirc, or ~/.gnomerc, but when I create these files in my home directory and restart the vars don't show as changed in my terminal.03:36

bazhangibus for that03:38
xubuntu29wUnfortunately I'm having trouble getting it to run.03:38

bazhangibus is the correct tool03:38

winsuxey xubuntu comrades! i14:52
winsux'm having a little bit trouble with my computer because it won't properly boot in GUI mode14:52
ObrienDave!details14:53
ubottuPlease elaborate; your question or issue may not seem clear or detailed enough for people to help you. Please give more detailed information, errors, steps, and possibly configuration files (use the !pastebin to avoid flooding the channel)14:53
winsuxi've tried to reset xfce config files but to be honest i don't know where to start14:53
winsuxit is a long story: i tried to compile gtk+3.0 on xubuntu 1414:54
winsuxi downloaded all depedencies and most libs compiled successfully, but when i tried to setup gtk+3.0 with ./configure it said 'XInput2 not available'14:56
ObrienDavetry asking in #ubuntu  there are more people to help you there14:56
winsuxafter some googling i found out i had to change /etc/default/grub to make sure it boots in 'text' mode14:57
winsuxso after using vim and sudo update-grub and sudo reboot it boots in text mode, as expected14:57
winsuxbut i couldn't figure out how to compile gtk+3.0 properly so i changed /etc/default/grub back to 'quiet splash' (the previous setting) and update-grub and reboot14:58
winsuxthis is where the problems started. grub boots ok en xfce seems to load properly.14:58
winsuxbut after a couple of seconds it reverts to a black screen with just a blinking cursor14:59
winsuxthe only way to get out this was to CTRL+ALT+F1 to open the virtual console and login normally14:59
ObrienDavetry asking in #ubuntu  there are more people to help you there15:00
winsuxisnt that a problem to ask it there? because ubuntu does not use xfce15:01
ObrienDavewell, stick around then, someone can help you eventually15:02
winsuxwell thanks for referring to ubuntu15:04
Alexfrenchmaybe ask on xfce forum no ??15:05
winsuxgood idea. this is a good time to register an account :P15:06
Alexfrencheven linux mint 17.1 use xfce too if you want15:07
Alexfrenchmaybe this error occurs on another distribution15:07
winsuxi think that my configurations are messed up but i'm not sure because i'm fairly new to (x)ubuntu distro's15:08
ObrienDavethere's an easy fix for it, i can't remember how to do it15:11
winsuxonce i logged into the virtual console. typing startx or startxfce4 boots a 'working' GUI, but then my audio output devices aren't properly detected.15:14
winsuxand typing X just takes me back to the black screen with a blinking cursor15:15
ObrienDaveyou could try reinstalling xubuntu as a drastic measure. do you have a separate /home?15:16
winsuxhome/methos is the only dir in /home15:17
winsuxthat doesn't count as a separate /home i guess?15:17
knomewinsux, what happens if you log in with a new user account?15:18
winsuxi tried sudo adduser poep to create another account and i logged into that account in the virtual console. then i had to manually type startx to start the GUI. it looked like it had the exact same problems15:20
ObrienDavei mean /home as a separate partition15:25
winsuxoh nope everything resides on a single partition15:28
winsux(well i have a swap on another partition, but that's about it)15:28
mirinda2kGood evening, i'm using 14.04. Is there a easy way to make window boarders thicker? It is not good useable for me when try to resize (stretch) a window.16:45
elfymirinda2k: try using alt + right mouse button to resize windows16:46
mirinda2ki know i can do it with key shortcuts and also there is the triangle in the right lower edge of the window (at least in Bluebird theme), but i really want to make the borders thicker :-)16:48
elfynot sure how - someone else might :)16:48
mirinda2kanyway, thanksm elfy16:50
Alexfrenchmaybe draw your own window theme ?? first is it possible on xubuntu ??16:50
mirinda2ksure it would be i assume and i already was thinking about that, but i'm a little afraid of all the work.16:52
elfymirinda2k: some reading here might help http://sevkeifert.blogspot.co.uk/2014/12/increase-window-border-size-in-xubuntu.html16:52
elfyalso I believe some other themes use thicker borders16:52
mirinda2kelfy: thanks a lot for the link, that may fit my needs. Happy Saturday!16:53
elfywelcome :)16:53

skinofstarshey gang. i'm just trying out xubuntu. i was wondering if there is a meta-key launcher, like unity?17:17
jattSuper+T opens terminal Super+W opens browser does that count?17:21
skinofstarsthat's nice, but not very general use17:22
skinofstarsi guess i'm used to just hitting super and typing what i want17:23
elfyctrl+esc opens whisker and you can type then17:23
elfyyou can edit that so it uses super instead17:24
skinofstars ahh, that's pretty good. yeah, that'll do. thanks :)17:24

Kreamhi all - I'm running 14.10 -- how do i disable lightdm?18:00
Kreami tried update-rc.d - didnt work18:00
Kreambun - didnt work18:00
Kreamlightdm keeps on displaying18:00
holsteinKream: displaying the login screen? you mean?18:03
holstein!text18:03
ubottuTo start your system in text-only mode append 'text' (without the quotes) to the kernel line in the grub menu. You can access the grub menu by pressing Esc (Grub legacy) or Shift (Grub2) during boot. For more info see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions#Text%20Mode18:03
holsteinid see if that still applies18:03
Kreamahhh okay wow18:08
Kreamhow would one just stop lightdm from running, every boot?18:08
holsteinKream: if i didnt want it, i would remove it18:09
holstein!mini18:09
ubottuThe Minimal CD image is very small in size, and it downloads most packages from the Internet during installation, allowing you to select only those you want.  The installer is text based (rather than graphical as used on the Desktop DVD). See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD18:09
holsteini would likely start with that ^ instead of xubuntu , and just add the minimao that i want18:09
Kreamyeah, i want it but for a few boots on this vm i want it disabled - how would i do that?18:10
holsteinKream: i would try the text mode18:10
holsteinKream: or, remove and put it back.. or, disable properly.. or, just use it all the time, since its not doing anything "bad"..18:10
Kreamsure, i could just sudo chmod -x the binary but i want to know how to do it the init script way ... i mean, its been a while since I've drawn a blank on something so basic18:15
brainwashKream: http://upstart.ubuntu.com/cookbook/#override-file18:18
brainwashupstart is the default init system in 14.1018:18
Kreami created lightdm.override - didnt work18:22
Kreamahhhh i just did touch18:22
Kreamsec, tryin18:22
brainwashread carefully :)18:22
Kreamyeah, the doc i originally read implied a file named lightdm.override would do the job18:24
Kreamrebooting...18:24
Kreamand it works. thanks brainwash and holstein18:24
brainwashgreat :)18:25
brainwashrun "sudo start lightdm" to launch it on demand18:26

bigmek123hello, anybody else has wierd white-box problem with icon for dropbox ?22:56
bigmek123dont think "reinstall it" is the solution I want22:56
remlinebigmek123, I had that problem previously, but it recently went away. I'm assuming some update in the past 2 weeks resolved it?22:58
knomewell i don't think that would fix it either..22:58
bigmek123remline, it just broke when I switched to pure xfce session, not xubuntu session22:59
bigmek123shouldnt done that probably22:59
remlinebigmek123, what do you mean by pure xfce session?23:00
bigmek123remline, you can choose session you log into, by clicking in the top right corner on a little mouse-icon23:01
bigmek123there's two for xubuntu 14.04 - xubuntu and xfce23:01
remlinebigmek123, I have dropbox v3.2.6. What version do you have?23:05
bigmek123remline, same23:06
remlinebigmek123, I assume restarting the computer didn't help? :)23:06
remlineI wish I could tell you why my icon is working now but wasn't before. It fixed itself somehow...23:08
bigmek123remline, no, I shutdown daily23:13
bigmek123I have this issue for a couple of days now23:13
