[06:13] Good morning. [12:13] Hi folks === deegee is now known as drussell [16:07] hi PaulW2U === stryx`_ is now known as stryx` === IdleOne is now known as io === viv`d is now known as vivid [20:51] hey, my ubuntu 15.04 gets stuck at "creating ext4 partition" [20:52] help is appreciated [20:52] (during installation) [20:53] i also made sure my ssd doesn't have any bad sectors [20:53] feliwir: are you getting a notification that it needs formatting for example ? [20:53] no, it just doesn't make any progress anymore [20:54] could it be due to me having 2 ssd's and one hdd? [20:54] fel which partitioning mode did you cjhoose , guid4e3d, auto or manual ? [20:55] oops guided [20:55] feliwir: ^ [20:55] i used auto on my old ssd with ubuntu 14.04 (which was broken thats why i couldnt upgrade it^= [20:56] but if it helps i can try to format it before i try installation [20:56] I had some issues like that a while back, did the partitions before installing with gparted [20:56] heh :) [20:56] have you manually partitioned hdds/sdds in the past ? if so it's best to use that [20:56] well, i still have the old partitions [20:56] back from ubuntu 14.10, [20:56] no, i've never done that before to be honest :D [20:57] try that then [20:57] right now i am on my liveusb and have gparted opened, no idea what to do with it though [20:57] 'then you have to format them as well when choosing ext4 [20:58] well feliwir if you've never done it before - make sure you do it right ;) [20:58] elfy: haha very good advice [20:58] measure twice - cut once ... [20:59] you might even have where it 'tried' to create one [20:59] i am not quite sure why i need to make new partitions at all :( i thought the old ones would be ok [21:00] and you're using 'Something Else' as the option ? [21:01] and just marked the old one for formatting and as / ? [21:01] yes , they are you just need to reformat them to get rid of the data [21:02] http://i.imgur.com/jExbYAp.png [21:02] where would i reformat anything here? [21:03] I would be extremely careful about reformatting that partition unless you are completely positive that 68Gb used is all old and unused [21:04] thw yellow portion of the partition is the data from the old install , it needs to be erased by formatting to nsetup the partition for installation of the new OS [21:05] unless you want to rpreserve the dat from the old install [21:06] preserve the data , that is [21:07] okay [21:07] but where to put my / ? [21:09] right - so you're going to be resizing it one way or the other [21:09] feliwir: the whole partition will be / if you choose not to create a /home as well [21:09] http://i.imgur.com/D9F5nkI.png?1 [21:09] it says it has no root [21:10] feliwir: if you do that - it WILL remove any data in that partition - all 68Gb [21:10] no problem [21:10] all my data is on my hdd [21:11] do i need to set a mount point for swap aswell? [21:11] no swap will deal with itself [21:12] alright, can i ignore the warning? [21:12] what warning? [21:12] http://i.imgur.com/eIS72fM.png?1 [21:12] what? no you need to direct the swap partition to be used as swap [21:13] if you dont to it, it will not use swap [21:13] the swap warning is most likely di=ue swap being turned off [21:13] k1l_: no - I have never in the last 3 years once told the installer anything about swap [21:13] k1l_: you just whatever swap is available [21:13] it says: use as swap anyways [21:14] that warning is what I normally see [21:14] elfy: i dont use swap since 3 years or so. [21:14] ) [21:14] :) [21:14] I don't use it - I just have some for Justin Case [21:14] the live cd uses any swap it finds. i am not sure about the install. [21:14] starting now [21:15] it seems to reenter the old step -.- [21:15] k1l_: in my experience - live uses what it finds, then uses same for the install [21:15] nvm it makes progress :D [21:18] how long is that step supposed to take? [21:18] feliwir: are you using gparted atm ? [21:18] no, i am installing atm :D [21:19] but i used the manual way [21:19] and told it to format ext4 [21:19] got stuck again though -.- : http://i.imgur.com/4bAnXr0.jpg?1 [21:19] , did you choose the partition as the / moiuntpoint [21:20] ye [21:20] you saw the screenshot [21:20] http://i.imgur.com/D9F5nkI.png?1 [21:20] feliwir: the 2nd to last screenie is the slideshow :) [21:21] :D [21:21] well, time for a new try i guess -.- [21:22] if the installer keeps hanging on that stage - which is what I had a while back, just do the format in gparted [21:22] okay [21:22] then start up the installer - choose the same 'Something Else' option [21:22] then when you set it up - just do the mountpoint - don't format it again [21:23] it'll say you're not formatting - ignore that warning [21:23] The driver descriptor says the physical block size is 2048 bytes, but Linux says it is 512 bytes. [21:23] gparted keeps telling me that warning^^ [21:23] but I'm not that comfortable saying format a drive that's half full ;) [21:23] feliwir: don't worry about that either [21:24] how can i stop the setup from always going back to its old step? [21:24] you need to cancle the install [21:25] then start gparted from whatever menu your version uses [21:25] yeah i just did that [21:25] but i am not sure if installation will go back to the same step [21:25] oic - no it will start from the beginning again [21:25] bootloader will go into sdc or sdc1 ? [21:26] wherever you tell it to when doing Something Else - not sure [21:27] are you sure the ssd is working properly? [21:27] not going to be much help there - as I put them in different places here ;) [21:27] yay [21:27] Almost finished copying file it says [21:27] i just started :D [21:28] the ssd is working properly 100% SMART tells me that [21:29] does smart even have any meaning for ssds? [21:29] feliwir in the future use gparted to create a / partition around 15 G at the beginning of the drive, you st the mountpoint as / when installing, then the remainder of the partition can used for a /home partition that contains all your data and config files etc , so reinstalling to / only will then take about 20 mins and you /home mountpoint just needs to be set during installation thus preserving all your previous data [21:30] BluesKaj: alright thanks. The thing is that my previous ubuntu installation was really broken and i wanted to get rid of everything :) [21:31] installation finished [21:31] time to restart [21:31] i'll reconnect and tell if it worked [21:31] I wish the installer was somewhat smarter about swap size [21:31] did a server install today, gave it 70GB for root, ended up with 64GB swap ._. [21:32] was to be expected as it has that much ram, but still kind of dumb for a server [21:32] given the 70gb limit [21:32] feliwir: understood , but when you find a stable install but just want to upgrade to next version keep the idea in mind [21:33] DAT BOOTTIME [21:33] amazing :D thanks guys [21:33] is grub starting by default? [21:34] jtaylor: that's waaay too much , you'll never use any of it if you have more than 16GRAM [21:34] I know [21:35] luckily shrinking is simple for swap + lvm === feliwir_ is now known as feliwir [21:35] well that's it for today , my old eyes are getting tired [21:35] later gents [21:35] after installaton I had some 200mb left in root :) [21:37] jtaylor: surely that's enough :) [21:44] how to make new tabs in the ubuntu 15.04 terminal? [21:44] not ctrl+shift+t anymore? [21:45] ah that does work, i used to use rightclick :P === jayne_ is now known as jayne
