[01:28] I have to have KDE Plasma 5 === eduardo is now known as Guest57985 [04:49] Hi all, I recently upgraded from 14.04 to 14.10 (Plasma 5). The last thing i did was edit a conf file to get firefox to play .swfs, then plasma crashed on me, I restarted and after I log in it just goes to a black screen with my cursor that I can still move. I googled around and several people seem to have this problem, but I couldnt find any solutions. I ended up just reinstalling, but on a new install it still goes to that [04:49] black screen (i do however keep /home on a seperate partition, so if its because of a saved setting somewhere i guess its keeping that setting?) Does anyone know how to fix this black screen problem? [04:50] kubuntuplasma5: one way you can know whether or not it is a setting, is to log in as a new user [04:51] if your new user has no problems, then it is a busted config [04:51] what *I* had a problem with was lightdm and sddm conflicting [04:51] I tried to figure out how to login as a guest or to make a new user, but I didnt see an option for that on the plasma login, how would I go about that? [04:51] !newuser [04:51] hmmm [04:52] !user [04:52] To add new users to your Ubuntu system, follow the instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AddUsersHowto - For administrative privileges, users need to be made members of the group "sudo" - See !sudo [04:53] Ok, so I should be able to boot up, go over to a different TTY, add the user then restart and try to login as that user? [04:53] you don't have to restart [04:53] or even logout [04:53] just login as a different user [04:54] "guest" is built in, I think [04:54] Ya, im use to seeing guest as an option, since upgrading I havent seen it there. [04:54] hmmm [04:54] that's not right [04:54] Im on a live cd now, so im going to hop back onto the actual install and give adding a new user a go. [04:54] are you using lightdm, or sddm? [04:55] sddm [04:55] ok, then you might check to see if lightdm is still installed [04:55] cli:`apt-cache policy lightdm` [04:55] if it is, ditch it [04:55] that fixed things for me [04:56] Ditch it as in just an 'apt-get remove lightdm'?' [04:56] yes [04:57] weirdly i had to remove kdm too, but I think nobody else had that zombie in there [04:57] Alright, going to give both of those a go, thanks for the assistance! [04:59] best of luck! [05:07] valorie: lightdm wasn't installed. But i added a new user, and was able to log in just fine on that user. [05:08] So something in one of my config files is messed up then? [05:09] I would assume so [05:09] unfortunately, I haven't a clue where [05:09] Haha, i was just going to ask "where the heck would i look to start fixing that" [05:09] surely there is a bug report for this somewhere? [05:10] I wasnt able to find one, just some issues other people were having on some forums, but none of thier fixes worked. [05:10] :( [05:12] I keep /home on a seperate partition mainly because of the media on there (and who likes restoring firefox favorites or chat logs, bleh) if i were to delete everything in ~/home/. (sans a something like FF/Pidgin) i know id lose my configurations on all my other programs, but would they rewrite new files after they were reopened? (hopefully deleting what ever is broken, so im able to boot back up) [05:18] no no no [05:18] No? [05:18] don't delete home, and don't even delete ~/.kde, or .config, or .local [05:19] look in the folders, and look at the individual files, and see what they say [05:19] most are text [05:19] everything used to be in .kde, now in plasma5 they will be in .config or .local [05:19] so I would start there [05:20] and don't delete, just rename them [05:20] that way you can move them back if they were not involved [05:21] and yes, when you login the next time if you have moved some files they will be recreated [05:21] but wholesale slaughter is a lot of mess to clean up [05:21] :-) [05:21] also it is sorta fun to read those config files IMO [05:23] This is what I was doing before it crashed on me, i just dont understand what changing a single line in a mime-type config would have to do with it though? http://askubuntu.com/questions/478169/why-cant-firefox-run-local-swf-files [05:25] me either, however the second suggestion sounds better anyway === lhorace is now known as Horace [06:14] Good morning. [15:14] Dual boot Windows 8.1 U14.04 [15:14] I'd like to go to kubuntu [15:15] I've done what ubuntu tutorial said me [15:15] There was a smart login psswd [15:15] I filled them... And nothing [15:16] I had to reinstall my Ubuntu [15:20] Does Kubuntu works? [Y/N] [15:20] I just want 1 letter [15:21] Y or N [15:22] doublex, it's not that simple, did you use the uefi installation ? [15:22] !uefi | doublex [15:22] doublex: UEFI is a specification that defines a software interface between an operating system and platform firmware. It is meant as a replacement for the BIOS. For information on how to set up and install Ubuntu and its derivatives on UEFI machines please read https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI [15:23] I've got a dual boot Win 8.1 and U14.04 [15:24] I can choice between 2 ones [15:24] when launching PC [15:24] Ok [15:24] Just 1 question [15:25] A PhD said you need QA [15:25] Because they need for Nightlies [15:26] But, I'm free [15:26] :) [15:26] I want a Kubuntu [15:26] so your login doesn't respond, have you tried the VT/TTY and updated and upgraded there (ctl+alt+F1-F6) [15:26] No [15:26] ah [15:26] I have done Ctrl Alt F1 [15:28] So i do an update-upgrade on F1 and F6? [15:28] After, it works? [15:28] Y/N? ^^ [15:28] After, there's other fights [15:29] But I have my Kubuntu. :) [15:29] Y/N? [15:29] :) [15:29] doublex, try it and see what happens [15:29] Yes [15:29] Yoda was wrong [15:30] We have the right to try. [15:30] ty BluesKaj [15:36] doublex, there aren't many simple yes or no answers due to the nature of the OS, the hardware API etc, since all these things are interdependent [15:38] From reading his story I couldn't get an accurate problem description... [15:39] lordievader, I think he wants to to try kubuntu since ubuntu doesn't load from the login [15:41] Was it the login? [15:42] still waiting for his update upgrade reswult in the VT [15:43] 18-16:36 -!- doublex [804fb335@gateway/web/freenode/ip.128.79.179.53] has quit [Ping timeout: 246 seconds] [15:45] guess we'll find when and if he returns [16:25] After login in Kubuntu, I did what "Blues" told me . update and upgrade on Ctrl-alt F1 and F6 Still nothing [16:28] Is there one of you who have a Kubuntu working? [16:31] Well, I'm going to eat [16:32] Tell me if you have time how to have more than a login page. :) Thx :) [16:35] By the way, I'm a QA who works on Nightlies. :) [16:36] But they sent me to you. :) [16:36] For Kubuntu [16:36] If you don't need me, they do [16:37] Dr. Roy Schestowitz too said me you need QA [16:39] doublex: We have a QA team... ;) [16:40] Cooooooooooool!!!! [16:40] Where are teyJ [16:40] they? [16:41] In France, we say they are in Uranus [16:41] :D [16:42] But I suppose there not there [16:42] they're [16:43] doublex: https://wiki.kubuntu.org/KubuntuTesters [16:44] Ty. I saved you. Now, You've come back to Light Force. :) [18:36] I have been looking in wiki's and forums but can't find this. I had Kmail working fine on my old dist, but after fresh reinstall, I can't get kmail to autopopulate the from field (as in my email address). Anyone have a clue on this one? It doesn't show up on a new message, nor does it show up when replying or reply to all. [18:37] the wiki I found has dead end pages, so I couldn't dig down any further.. If you know, please let me know. I think I just sprouted 2 new gray hairs on my head === Roey is now known as EvilRoey [18:53] does anyone run os on vmware? Linnak [19:06] VolUTFan: what is my what? [19:06] your question [19:06] about vmware [19:06] I'd like to know if all kwin effects work or not, because on virtualbox there are some which don't [19:08] It has been a while since I have used vmware server to spawn a kubuntu distro, but.. What I can tell you in the past it was touchy. The resolution was minimal. But, as far as screen drawing, I didn't have any problems with it [19:09] its been a few years since I did anything with it [19:09] let me see if I can find out something about that for you. 1 sec [19:13] Linnak, sent you a private message.
