_eddyMorning guys. I am a PHP web developer been doing this for over 4 years now. I want to set up my own hosting server for some of my projects, ideally i want to host atleast 70 per server. I have look at some articles online and some of them are years old. So I came here to ask you guys, what tools(hardware, software, etc) are you using both to set up the server and also fully secure it to the teeth. My budget is about £1000. THANK YOU06:07
jak2015hi all06:19
jak2015wich is the first step for checking why i am not connect to my server via ssh and not answer the ping ?06:19

_eddyecc ram or non ecc ram for a small server? much might host atleast 60 sites?06:39
Tm_Tjak2015: also if you are tinkering with virtual servers, there's plenty of stuff in the virtualizing environment you have to take into account possibly06:39
jak2000Tm_T any advice?06:46
sarnold_eddy: ecc might be hard to do on a budget of 1000 pounds; it probably isn't worth it unless you've also got e.g. zfs or ceph for storage, etc06:49

jamespagecoreycb, can you validate that the core unit test suite requires all of these new deps?13:39
jamespagecoreycb, it looks like some of them may be optional13:39
coreycbjamespage, python-pylibmc, python-nose, memcached ?13:40
jamespagecoreycb, no down in ceilometer13:40
coreycboh, ok13:40
jamespagecoreycb, you pylibmc stuff looks good anyways13:40
jamespagecoreycb, I can take a peek13:40
zartooshHI is there a way to find out prior to installing a package, whether some dependencies for that package is broken on that system? I usually find this after I do apt-get install <package>. I like to avoid that if possible? thanks13:41
rbasakzartoosh: "apt-get -f install" fixes dependency issues, and prompts you first. Can you use that?13:43
zartooshrbasak, thanks for suggestion, but I was hoping something similiar to dry-run. apt-get has that option but does not do what I want for.13:45
jamespagecoreycb, you may be a bit of pushback on pylibmc as we already have python-memcache13:45

lhoracehallyn: So there's no other way to apply cgconfig.conf on bootup except for writing your own init script?17:35
hallynlhorace: not right now (depending on your release).  systemd can do some of it for you.  a new project or new libcgroup effort (especially to work with systemd and/or cgmanager) would be good17:40
hallynlooks like the debian pkg has advanced, let's see what it does now17:41
hallyn(i sorta lost track of it after jbernard let it go, sadly)17:41
* lhorace likes to stay away from systemd17:42
lhoraceI just setting up cgroup for one program17:42
hallynthen yeah a custom upstart job using cgmanager might be simplest.  or heck, upstart jobs support cgroups natively17:43
lhoraceI guess I can add something in /etc/boot.local or similar or write simple upstart init script17:43
hallynjodh implemented that gem17:43
hallynis the program started by upstart, or by hand?17:43
lhoraceSeems like a simple cgconfigparser -l /etc/cgconfig.conf would do the job17:43
hallynyes, the problem is in how it will conflict with other things, but if it all just works for you then perfect17:44
lhoraceConflict? I use groupname/program hierarchy17:44
lhoraceRight now it appears it's enabled on bootup and I haven't took the time how I am going to do it right now... It's low priority item17:46
lhoraces/it's/it's not/17:46
hallynespecially conflict as in race in hierarchy mounting17:47
hallynyes, it was racing with libvirt (and other things), iirc that's one reason why it originally got turned off by default17:47
lhoraceHmmm, don't quite understand, I have not regularly use Cgroups and I do use libvirt. I guess I'll see17:52

tewardif i'm setting up postfix, dovecot, mail filtering, and webmail on a server, what min specs would you recommend22:15
tewardbare minimum - at least 15 users22:16
bekksWhich specs does your server have? :)22:18
jrwrenteward: 30GB storage and 4GB ram22:21
jrwrenteward: mailman can be included in your list just fine too :p22:22
Patrickdkthat sounds insane22:27
Patrickdkyou can easily do it in 1gig22:27
Patrickdkmaybe even 512megs if your careful22:28
Patrickdkand a lot less if you use something other than spamassassin/clamav22:28
* lhorace runs postfix/dovecot on 256MB22:29
jrwrenPatrickdk: i totally agree. I was naming what I thought was super small. I guess I'm rich. :p22:29
=== markthomas|away is now known as markthomas
jrwrenspamassassin can take a bit of ram, so depending on email volume, maybe 256MB wouldn't be enough.22:31
Patrickdkfor me, spamassassin takes about 80megs of ram22:32
Patrickdkmaybe 130megs22:32
Patrickdkmy spamassassin is large though22:32
Patrickdkclamav takes like almost 300megs22:32
jrwrenPatrickdk: that is about what mine takes.22:32
Patrickdkbut other av providers are a lot faster and only use around 100megs ram22:32
PatrickdkI only keep clamav around for a backup22:33
Patrickdkand cause my mailserver needs like 30gigs of ram, for all the dovecot instances22:33
