phunyguyrunning into another issue.... whenever I click links from external applications, it opens a new blank firefox window... and not the link I clicked.  This is a fresh install!02:08
holsteinphunyguy: phresh install of 14.04? 14.10? stock xubuntu 32bit?03:45
phunyguyholstein: fresh 14.04.2, looks like the entry in default applications settings is broken.03:46
phunyguy64 bit03:46
phunyguyI added a new one with /usr/bin/firefox "%s" and that worked.03:46
holsteincool..03:46
phunyguyI even created a new user on here and tested it... did the same thing.03:47
holsteinsure.. might be a bug from somewhere03:47
holsteinno doubt, that sort of thing isnt tested03:47
phunyguyyep03:47
holsteini consider it an unconfigured configuration ;)03:47
chrisco97I have a quick question I wondered if anyone could answer.05:30
chrisco97Is there a way to hide the icon in the default weather applet that comes with Xubuntu?05:31

michal__hello guys, after last update of firefox on trusty I think there may be a bug10:36
michal__after clicking links on other programs such as thunderbird or liferea, firefox shows up but as new window with start page10:38
brainvvashmichal__, that most likely https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1160110:38
ubottubugzilla.xfce.org bug 11601 in Helpers "exo-open: firefox no longer supports -remote" [Normal,New]10:38
michal__yeah10:39
michal__thank you guys, I think I need to temporarily choose chromium as a default...10:39
brainvvashmichal__, run "gvfs-mime –set x-scheme-handler/http firefox.desktop", restart the app and click a link10:42
brainvvashthis may resolve the problem (maybe only temporary)10:42
michal__as much as I like Xfce, I'm afraid that the official fix will come after months or years :(10:43
brainvvashalso, x-scheme-handler/https for https10:43
brainvvashnah, it will be fixed asap we get a patch10:44
michal__brainvvash, this commands affect only the file ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list ?10:45
brainvvashif assigning the mime type manually works (persistent), then there is at least a simple workaround/fix10:45
brainvvashmichal__, I think so, yes10:46
michal__then I'll temper it manually10:46
brainvvashjust tested it and it works here (xubuntu 15.04)10:47
michal__that only worked, when I chose firefox to open links in liferea preferences10:52
michal__at least I know what's wrong - more or less ;)10:53

brownfauxis there a default disk partitioner for Xubuntu, or a prefered one? Just wanting to reformat some drives17:09
holsteinbrownfaux: i like gparted, when its doing what i need it to do.. which is most of the time17:10
holsteinhttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/GParted17:10
geniigparted is the defacto standard partitioner17:10
brownfauxholstein: yea I normally use that, but it didn't come pre installed on my fresh install of xubuntu, wasn't sure if the community was trying to suggest something new or different17:11
brownfauxill install that and go on as usual17:12
Oskar__Hello, is anyone there?17:19
holsteinyes.. many are here. if you have a question, ask Oskar__ , and a volunteer may be able to assist.. welcome17:20
Oskar__when inserting a usb drive, it is automatically mounted. If I choose files to transfer to my hard drive, it works if it's only one. If however, I select more what happens is that it says "collecting files" while nothing happens. Does anyone know how to fix this?17:22
holsteinOskar__: not definitively.. i would try isolating and testing.. i have other sticks laying about, though.. i would try other filemanagers, after checking for and applying updates. i would try other formats, and other sticks, and that stick other places as well.. even if its just live iso's on that same hardware17:23
Oskar__alright holstein will do. Thanks a lot!17:24

klopsi-u3hmm17:47

xubuntu51wi don't have a graphic card17:51
geniiYou don't have a graphic card?17:52
xubuntu51wexcept the one on my laptop processor (intel i5)17:53
klopsi-u3can you switch to a virtual terminal and back to X to see if that restores your screen_17:55
klopsi-u3?17:55
klopsi-u3i dont even know if ubuntu supports consoles with ctrl-alt-f1, f2 etc17:56
htqpklopsi-u3: yes it does, tty on f1-f6 and X11 on f7 upwards17:56
xubuntu51wok thanks I will try it17:58
linuxwillerGuys, when XFCE 4.12 comes out, will it be upgraded automatically or should I do something to manually install it?17:59
innocentHello.I m on a fresh 14.04 install .2 monitors and an ati r7 graphics card.On top of my laptops native screen there is a flashy pink line.Any guidance on related reading about how to fix it?Already tried all open and proprietary drivers with no luck. Thanks in advance!18:00
SailorealHi18:07
SailorealI wonder how to install Xubuntu with Dual boot alongside Windows 718:07
SailorealCan someone provide me with a video or instruction?18:07

innocentHi again.Missed any answers before :/ Just did a fresh14.04 install.Got 1 extra onitor attached to the laptop and an ati r7 graphics card.On the top part of my native screen there is a pink flickering line.Already tried the open and the proprietary ati drivers.Could som1 point me to some related reading on solving this? Thanks in advance!19:23
holsteininnocent: well, unfortunatley, the "answer" may be, the hardware doesnt support linux, and there may not be a "fix" that ati has provided, or that the open linux/ubuntu teams can provide19:25
holsteininnocent: what i usualy do is, just fire up as many live distros as i can.. not "ubuntu vs xubuntu" for example, but, 14.04 vs 12.04.. different kernels, and different driver versions19:25
holsteinthere is an xorg ppa.. likely a few others as well. that provide different versions of drivers..19:26
holsteini would do my testing with *only* the internal display.. and i like using arandr as the GUI configuration tool when i start experiementing with dual head19:26
innocentHardware not supporting linux , somehow , feels like a big surprise .Specially if you consider that this is a new laptop :/ I have already started checking other distros but i would really love to solve this ;D I ll check about the xorg ppa .Thank you holstein !19:29
arun_hi guys, when will the xfce 4.12 for Ubuntu get relased ?23:05
holsteinarun_: ubuntu is not a rolling release..23:06
arun_holstein: I do know that.23:06
arun_holstein: I was thinking of some PPA stuffs23:07
knomearun_, 4.12 will be in vivid.23:07
arun_knome: ok thanks. but I hope it will also support trusty ..23:07
holsteinhttp://wiki.xfce.org/releng/4.12/roadmap23:07
holsteinyou can also research a ppa if you like https://launchpad.net/~xubuntu-dev/+archive/ubuntu/xfce-4.1223:08
knomecomponents will be backported if they provide security patches, otherwise, don't expect a backport of everything23:08
arun_knome: thanks.23:08
xubuntu18oHi, I am new to Xubuntu. Just installed Xubuntu 10.04 LTS on my laptop. What is the best way to enable filesharing on xubuntu23:14
elfyummm23:14
xubuntu18oXubuntu and OSX23:14
elfywhat I would do is first get something that's not only supported as a server edition :)23:14
elfy10.04 desktop is EOL23:15
xubuntu18o14.0423:15
xubuntu18oha! sorry23:15
elfyok :)23:15
holsteinalso, "filesharing" between what? exactly.. if its just sharing files between xubuntu and OSX dual booting, you can mount the drive and share what you like23:15
elfynot that I can actually help with that :)23:16
xubuntu18oI have some files on my mac that I want to send to my laptop23:16
xubuntu16wquick question. I have a bootable usb with 14.04.1 and want to install on my mom's pc. will it be able to upgrade to 14.04.2 or should I write that new iso to the USB before installing23:17
xubuntu16wdon't want to waste an hour downloading the newer iso and writing it unless i need to23:17
knomexubuntu16w, once you upgrade all packages, you are essentially at 14.04.223:18
xubuntu16wthanks knome23:18
knomenp, enjoy23:18
holsteinxubuntu18o: the way i did that was, ftp server, and client.. since i was behind my firewall.. but, dropbox works both places.. as well as other software solutions23:18
holsteinxubuntu18o: samba would work both places.. i think it depends on how persistent you want it to be.. how persistent and easy..23:19
xubuntu18ook, no simple menu point and click that I just missed.23:19
holsteinxubuntu18o: i use gigolo.. though, in the menu on the mac, i created a share that the linux machine could easily join23:20
holsteintheres no "see your mac" button..23:20
xubuntu18oif I run the command shares-admin, it gives me window for filesharing but it fails to install services (SMB and NFS)23:22
xubuntu96wI'm having issues with my microphone crackling on Xubuntu 14.04, any suggestions?23:32
holsteinxubuntu96w: can you share the noise in any way? do you know what i mean by "clipping"? when is it making a sound?23:33
xubuntu96wholstein: Only when I talk  to other people23:40
xubuntu96wOnly they can hear it, when I record and playback, I hear the sound myself23:40
holsteinxubuntu96w: sure.. can you share it? do you know what i mean by clipping?23:40
xubuntu96wholstein: No23:41
holsteinxubuntu96w: try just simply turning the mic down23:41
xubuntu96wI did that23:42
xubuntu96wI turned it to 34% and people still hear it23:42
xubuntu96wI can't think of a way to capture the sound23:43
xubuntu96wholstein: Let me call the Skype Test Call bot and record it23:44
holsteinxubuntu96w: skype can also be set to manual, so its notadjusting your mic settings23:44
xubuntu96wholstein: I turned off auto adjust23:51
holsteinxubuntu96w: i would not use *only* skype for this test..23:52
xubuntu96wWhat else should I use to record23:52
holsteinxubuntu96w: i would use something simple like audacity23:53
holsteinxubuntu96w: but, dont over think it, and add new issues into your situation.. just try and isolate and test23:53
holsteinxubuntu96w: you could have an issue specific to skype.. and not with the hardware at all23:54
xubuntu96wholstein: Recording with audacity shows that my mic speed is like three times the normal speed23:58
holsteinxubuntu96w: ?23:58
holsteinxubuntu96w: you mean, your voice is higher?23:58
holsteinxubuntu96w: the mic has no "speed"..23:59
xubuntu96wWhen I play it back, the audio plays really fast23:59
xubuntu96wholstein23:59
