fliphey, my audio was showing as dummy driver and i uninstalled alsa and reinstalled then restarted alsa and nothing.  THis is the second time it has happened.  any idea what to do? please?01:45
wxlflip: it happens sometimes bnut not other times/01:48
fliphow do you fix it?01:49
wxli await your answer to my question to help figure that out01:49
flipif that was  question then not usually.  I reinstalled the OS to get the sound to work and it did but now its not working again01:50
wxlso it works sometimes, but not other timese01:50
flipi thought that was an answer at first01:50
wxland there's no pattern to when it works and doesn't01:50
wxlright?01:50
flippretty much but it hasnt worked consistently since it didnt work01:50
wxlwell consistently is the key01:50
wxlrandom problems usually ahve random causes01:51
flipi followed some fourm advice and uninstalled alsa and pulse audio then reinstalled them and forced a restart of alsa01:51
wxlmy guess is that either your sound card is failing or it's not properly connected to the motherboard01:51
wxlif `lspci` doesn't see the card, it doesn't matter what software you have, it won't work01:51
flipnow the audio icon is gone from the top right...or the bar where wifi, battery...that stuff is01:52
wxlyou need to look lower level01:52
wxlfirst confirm the kernel sees the hardware with `lspci`01:52
flip00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)01:53
wxlso it does see it which is good01:53
wxltry `lspci -nnk | grep " Audio " | grep driver`01:53
flipinclude the `?01:54
wxlno, that indicates the start and end of the command01:54
flipnothing ahppens, it just goes to the next line01:55
wxloh well that's remarkable01:55
wxloh derp01:55
wxli did this wrong01:55
wxltry `lspci -nnk | grep -A2 " Audio " | grep driver`01:55
fliplspci -nnk | grep " Audio " | grep driver01:56
flipKernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel01:56
wxlok, so you have a driver01:56
wxlso that's all good01:56
flipso far so good01:57
wxlyou have a wav file handy?01:57
flipmaybe, i just reinstalled ubuntu 14.0401:58
flipthen added apps and whatnot...but ill see would youtube wrok or specifically a wav?01:58
wxlpreferably a wav01:58
wxlyou can grab this http://www.nch.com.au/acm/11k16bitpcm.wav02:00
fliphu02:00
flipits working02:00
flipit asked me to click something to activate vlc02:00
flipi did that and it worked...02:01
wxlso i was going to have you test alsa, but it seems you've moved a bit upstream :)02:01
wxlwhich is fine02:01
wxlso what is NOT working?02:01
flipwell now the video for class is working with sound so i assume everything works02:01
wxlokie dokie02:02
flipthe identifier icon is not on the right though02:02
wxlalso keep in mind if you're having problems with video that might be a totally different issue unrelated to sound itself02:02
wxli always start at the lowest level:02:02
flipit was only the sound from the video, the video was working otherwise02:02
wxl1. make sure the hardware is detectged02:02
wxl2. make sure the kernel driver is in use02:02
wxl3. make sure alsa is behaving (i use `aplay`)02:03
wxl4. make sure pulse is working (i don't use it so figure that one out yourself)02:03
wxl5. make sure something basic like an mp3 and/or a video plays with vlc02:03
wxl6. then move to the browser02:04
wxlthe browser could be a whole array of problems02:04
wxlusually the simplest solution is to use a different browser02:04
wxlof course it could be a browser plug int02:04
wxletc02:04
wxlgood luck :)02:04
flipthanks02:04
flipi think my audio was attributed to something incorrectly...im not sure but i figure it asked me to use VLC so can i set it to only use VLC?02:06
