sergio-br23trying to install 14.04.2 here00:47
sergio-br23what is this?00:47
sergio-br23https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/143059800:51
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1430598 in ubiquity (Ubuntu) "trying to overwrite '/etc/init/startpar-bridge.conf', which is also in package sysvinit-utils 2.88dsf-58" [Undecided,New]00:51
sergio-br23ubiquity is asking about resizing partition, but the only thing I did was choose the mount point01:01
sergio-br23I can't install the system here (bug report)01:33
sergio-br2anyone tested the manual install with this image?01:36
holsteinsergio-br2: there are test cases documented at the QA testing site01:36
clear``hey guys, i have a wireless router that is 5ghz and 2.4ghz, my phone can find and connect to the 5ghz but my laptops can not find the 5ghz01:41
clear``is there a way to see if its my laptop or the router that is having the issue01:42
holsteinlaptop? or laptops?01:42
clear``i have 2 laptops. both xubuntu01:42
holsteinare the laptop/s in question 5ghz capable with the driver you are able to use in linux?01:42
clear``my raspberry pi also cant view the 5ghz01:42
clear``how do i check?01:42
holsteinlaptop? or laptops?01:43
holsteinideally, you ask the manufacturer.. like with the pi..01:43
holsteinsorry.. my new keyboard is odd..01:43
clear``lets see, ill look up the specs01:43
holsteini mean, if you are not seeing the 5ghz, thats my vote.. the driver doesnt support that.. it happens01:43
holsteini just connect to what linux can connect to, since, im not promised linux support officially01:44
clear``right01:44
clear``well i bought the same router for my home and for my business01:44
clear``5g showed up at the office for one day, now its gone01:44
holsteinfor one day? on what? *both* laptops?01:45
clear``i bought the one for home over a year ago, the one in the office, yes for one day on both laptops01:45
holsteinnot sure.. i always expect little issues like that.. are they the same wifi chipsets? broadcom? what driver/s are you using?01:46
clear``Wi-Fi® Wireless networking (802.11b/g/n)+ Bluetooth 4.0  <- thats what the specs say01:46
rpp601hey guys, i have 3 xubuntu boxes on my network. i can ssh into them all and bewteen them all, etc. however only one of them is set up to access externally. when i ssh into it from an external ip, trying to ssh from there to another box on the network gives 'core dump' and drops me back to the shell. i can't duplicate the problem on my local network.01:47
holsteinclear``: what chipset is it? thats what you'll need to go by when "hacking" linux support onto devices that dont promise linux support.. unless the manufacturers do promise support, like system76 or another linux reseller01:47
clear``http://www.toshiba.com/us/computers/laptops/satellite/S50/S50-BST2NX201:48
holsteinrpp601: you may need a more general linux channel.. you can always as in #ubuntu or #ubuntu-server.. i would look at the configuration.. if one is in the DMZ for example, and the traffic is different in some way01:48
* clear`` is looking up the chipset01:48
rpp601holstein, i asked in there but they were busy - this just started at random so i dunno.01:49
rpp601but thanks01:49
clear``Intel Wireless LAN Driver01:51
holsteinclear``: you can see, when i open a terminal, and run "lspci" i get a lot of output about my hardware, such as my wifi NIC..01:52
holstein05:00.0 Network controller: Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 / AR9565 Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01)01:52
clear``07:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43142 802.11b/g/n (rev 01)01:53
holsteinclear``: lspci -vv shows me "Kernel driver in use: ath9k01:53
clear``lol that was simple, thanks01:53
holstein!broadcom01:53
ubottuHelp with Broadcom bcm43xx can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx01:53
holsteintypically, i just pull broadcom and replace.. but, i dont have firsthand experience with that chipset01:54
holsteinclear``: typically, things are the "best" they can be "out of the box" in linux.. but, you can try some other drivers and modules..01:55
holsteinclear``: i would just fire up a few live isos and try different drivers and kernels and different software versions easily that way01:55
clear``Known Issues01:56
clear``* LP#1010931 14e4:4727 [Dell Vostro 3555] Broadcom BCM4313 5GHz doesn't work but 2.4GHz does01:56
holsteinclear``: well, there you go..01:56
* clear`` googles for known issues with BCM4314201:57
holsteinat least you know whats up.. i would just use 2.4, and not worry about it01:57
clear``2.4 is really really slow01:57
clear``i cant even stream a movie :(01:57
clear``across the network01:57
holsteincool.. so, you can replace the chip, you can run a supported os.. be sure you let them know you would like linux support for 5GHZ..01:57
holsteincheck the other chipset, and make sure its the same01:58
holsteini think you'll find, you *should* be able to stream just fine on the 2.4..01:58
clear``thanks, i found a few posts im going to read01:59
clear``see, this is why i think its a router issue01:59
clear``i streamed for 5 mins fine, then it starts to buffer and lag01:59
clear``really bad, then all wifi goes really slow01:59
holsteincould be. i would boot the officially suppported OS and test the router with the wifi NIC running under the supported driver01:59
clear``is there a usb bootable for windows?02:00
clear``i havent done windows in for ever :(02:00
holsteinnot sure..02:00
holsteinim sure you can find another way to isolate..02:00
holsteinanother machine with intel hardware runing a live iso..02:01
holsteinmaybe you can borrow, etc..02:01
clear``my other laptop is a different xubuntu version, still a toshiba tho02:02
* clear`` wonders if anyone at his office building has 5ghz signal02:02
clear``ill test that tomorrow02:02
holsteinclear``: i would be testing with live iso's, as i suggested, with the *same* kernel.. maybe a few different ones02:04
clear``thanks, i will try that as well02:04
UllarahHowdy, is there a way to add a seperator line in the favourites part, just like in the Accessories section?03:32
nick_____hey guys ... can you please tell me how I could map Super_L+F6 key to increase the brightness using xkb?03:34
nick_____I tried the xkb documentation the whole evening ... it is just beyond my brain capacity03:34
Ullarahnick_____, if you know the command to increase your brightness, you can go into the Keyboard section and use Application Shortcuts.03:35
nick_____yeah ... but I want to do it using the xkb03:35
Ullarah > Use xbacklight03:36
Ullarah > Create keyboard shortcut03:36
Ullarah > Profit03:36
UllarahIf you /really/ want to get tricky nick_____, take a look at this, http://www.charvolant.org/~doug/xkb/html/index.html03:37
Unit193Ullarah: Use Menulibre or edit xfce-applications.menu in .config/menus/xfce-applications.menu03:37
nick_____did that ... this site is beyond my brain capacity03:37
UllarahCheers Unit193 :)03:37
* eikon81g bows to Unit193 03:38
nick_____I bet there is something simpler, yet gui independent (so it could work in unity, kde, gnome, you name it)03:38
eikon81glol :)03:38
UllarahAh, Unit193, I'm using whiskermenu which comes with 14.1003:39
UllarahNot the standard applications menu.03:39
Unit193xfpm-power-backlight-helper likely isn't what you want though.03:39
Unit193Ullarah: Ahhh, right, that.03:39
UllarahI can switch over, no issues there :P03:39
Unit193It's just I've hardly used whisker, enough to know it's not for me.  It has defaults.rc, though don't think that's how to do what you're looking for.03:41
UllarahAnybody know why the catfish program in 14.10 comes up with weird writing?03:48
UllarahI should have said, in the menu.03:48
Unit193Weird writing?03:48
Ullarah > Menu > Accessories > Catfish is named something with weird characters, like swirls and stuff.03:49
UllarahUnit193, http://paste.ubuntu.com/10578169/03:50
Unit193=කැට්ෆිෂ් ගොනුව සෙවීම?03:50
Unit193Hah.03:50
UllarahSo it's not just me?03:50
Unit193Ullarah: You're using en_AU.  Well I don't get it, but a quick look at the desktop files shows it "translated" into en_AU with that string. :D03:50
Unit193This is good.03:51
UllarahCould you tell me what it should actually say so I can change it? :P03:51
Unit193I have no idea how that happened. :D03:51
Unit193Name=Catfish File Search03:51
UllarahCheers.03:52
Unit193Name[si]=කැට් ෆිෂ් ලිපි ගොනු සෙවීම  looks like it was just copied.03:52
Unit193I like that bug. :D03:53
Unit193And sure thing.03:53
UllarahHeh.03:53
UllarahAnd everything is named incorrectly when adding/removing items to the xfce panels.03:54
UllarahFor instance, whiskermenu is called 'Clock'03:54
UllarahIs there a screen recorder I can use?03:55
UllarahIt might make more sense to show the issue there.03:55
UllarahHmm. VLC seems to be able to do it.03:55
Unit193Can't remember the name of a common one.03:57
eikon81gI'm out you guys ttyl :) Later03:58
Unit193Have fun.03:59
bluesabregtk-recordmydesktop works well04:00
holstein^ thats the one ive always used..04:00
bazhangkazam has always been good for me04:00
bazhang!info kazam04:01
ubottukazam (source: kazam): screencast and screenshot application created with design in mind. In component universe, is optional. Version 1.4.5-1 (utopic), package size 733 kB, installed size 2052 kB04:01
bluesabreyes, kazam is also pretty great04:01
bazhangthere is one other recent one iirc, eidon/eidet04:01
UllarahWhere could I upload a webm file to?04:03
holsteinyoutube? your server? direct email?04:03
bluesabreyoutube potentially04:03
Ullarahwebmup.com :P04:03
holsteinmaybe vimeo?04:03
UllarahOkay, this is weird, webmup.com/CpIEZ04:04
UllarahSee the menu?04:04
Unit193PPAs?  How many panels do you have?  Maybe xfsettingsd or xfconfd?  I have never seen this before.04:05
UllarahOnly installed the webupd8team PPA04:06
UllarahI mean it's not a /huge/ issue :P04:07
UllarahJust something weird I noticed :)04:07
Unit193So, two amusing things in one night, awesome.04:07
UllarahMaybe I'll find more Unit193! :P04:07
Unit193I'll have to stick around then.04:08
UllarahHahaha!04:08
UllarahInteresting. Whiskermenu holds a temporary favourites. Remove it from your panel resets your favourites.04:09
UllarahAaaaand, adding the verve command line to a panel which is set to automatically hide makes the panel not hide at all.04:19
UllarahShould I update xfce to 4.12 or wait for xubuntu 15.04 ?05:50
ckatthello07:28
potHi! Under the 4.12 which app manage the background itself?09:01
Unit193xfdesktop4.09:07
potActually i don't have bg after i updated nautilus '^^09:11
potOdd but i can live with this 'feature'09:11
