ornjdoes ubuntu studio come with any software for ripping DVDs?11:10
elias_aornj: Yes, there are several.11:18
ornjok!  :)11:18
elias_aornj: Search with sw installation tool11:18
ornji should be clear; which is most conducive to ripping a short clip, as opposed to the entire disc?11:18
elias_aornj: The libraries and tools needed are the same.11:21
elias_aornj: describe your case - I'll try to follow.11:21
ornji have a dvd of material to which i own the copyright; i would like to rip a short clip to upload to youtube.11:23
ornjright now i'm reading the wiki on framerates because i'm staring, slack-jawed, at kdenlive trying to figure out what i want my default video profile to be.11:24
elias_aornj: Something like this? http://helpdeskgeek.com/linux-tips/extract-individual-tracks-from-a-dvd-using-acidrip-for-linux/11:24
ornjperhaps11:25
ornji don't think i want the entire track but i guess in my mind i'd chop it down with some video editor first, anyway.11:25
elias_aYou want the "title" (= track on video DVD). Then use editor.11:26
ornjyes, thank you  ;)11:27
ornji thought i knew what was up, knowing a thing or two about red book cd's, but dvd's are wacky.  ;)11:27
elias_aornj: Yes quite different realm. :)11:35
elias_aornj: Nevertheless I like linux tools when it comes to video.11:36
ornjthat's why i installed ubuntu studio.  ;)11:36
elias_aornj: I just love saying "dvgrab -autosplit nameofevent" and the DV is grabbed from my DV cassette camera.11:38
elias_aThere's nothing that beatiful in win or mac world.11:38
ornjwell, dvgrab could be compiled for bsd, could it not?  ;)11:39
millerthegorillahey there, does the current ubuntu studio release use xfce 4.12?  or will I have to wait for the next release?11:43
elias_aornj: AFAIK yes but why bother? :D11:44
millerthegorilla?11:48
ornjok, second dumb question11:48
ornjmy phone uses some weird crappy .3gp format for video.11:49
ornjif i would like to edit that before upload, would i use the same tool?11:49
millerthegorillaI didn't like xfce 4.11 or what ever ubu studio was using.  It crashed on a regular basis, so I started using kxstudio.  However, the memory requirements of xfce are an advantage and I'm now using fedora 22 alpha which uses xfce 4.12 and its really, really good.11:49
millerthegorillaPlus I can always add the kxstudio repos to ubu studio when its installed.11:50
elias_aornj: You mean "what editor can I use for this specific 3gp-video type"?11:50
millerthegorillaPerhaps I should ask on the ubuntustudio-dev channel?  Maybe they would know?11:50
elias_amillerthegorilla: I think that would be wise, yse.11:51
elias_ayes..11:51
ornjdownloading acidrip now, elias_a, thank you.11:51
millerthegorillaI'd rather not upgrade to xfce 4.12 from the current release as there are some major changes.  I'll ask them thanks.11:51
ornjelias_a>> yes, basically, i guess, yeah.11:51
ornjwhat net is #ubuntustudio-dev on?11:52
elias_aornj: Just google for ubuntu sw able to read the format. Should be doable.11:54
ornjwell, then...11:56
ornjfor this acidrip clip do i want to use kdenlive, openshot, or pitivi to chop it down?11:56
elias_aornj: Do you also want me to choose your underwear? :P11:58
elias_aornj: Any of those is ok if able to handle the video format.11:59
ornjugh11:59
ornjthis is what i hate about the linux way...12:00
ornj"we're all about choice!... there are over 200 options! pick whichever suits you best!"12:00
ornjno. just tell me which is the "best" software for a given task  :P12:01
ornjso that's one less thing i have to think about + can get on with my day.12:01
ornjthis is why i have literally over a dozen web browsers on my computer, more than half of which i haven't tried yet12:05
melodiehi17:38
melodiecan someone help me about how to install on a hard drive with more partitions than 4 primary? It might be a gpt table (there is a uefi, with windows 8) and I have not done such installs yet17:39
melodie?17:39
melodieand how can I check if the partition table is indeed a gpt?17:39
elias_amelodie: Use the live cd or USB drive17:55
elias_aUse gparted to see the contents of your HDD.17:56
elias_aThat should give you all the info you need.17:56
melodiehi elias_a17:57
melodieusb drive does not work, the HP 250 G3 does not boot to usb17:58
melodieno matter wha t17:58
melodiewe have reduced the size of Windows from within Windows with disk manager17:58
melodieand we do have 5 partitions17:58
melodiethis is certain17:58
melodieso you have answered beside my question :)17:59
melodiewell I found that parted -l will help17:59
melodiefor knowing if it is gpt17:59
melodiethen, I have been told gpt allows having more than 4 primary partitions17:59
melodieso, I'll have to create one additional partition yet, for the boot ?18:00
elias_amelodie: You're on the right track.18:48
elias_amelodie: Strange. According to manual your machine should be able to boot from USB: http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04409519-118:54
elias_aWell... whatever does the job is good enough.19:10
ornjcan someone help me play a dvd?20:31
ornji have ubuntu-restricted-addons installed and everything20:32
ornjregion-restricted error with totem, won't play with mplayer20:35
ObrienDavetry the gstreamer good, bad, ugly plugins in both .10 and 1.0 releases20:37
ornjok, i don't think i have bad, maybe aswhy20:37
ornjoops, i forgot i was going to update my system before asking this question  :P20:38
ornj:-/20:38
elias_ahttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs20:38
ornjYes, I did that.20:38
ornj(Ah-ha, the wiki was down last night)20:39
ornjoh, wait20:41
ornji was tired; maybe region's not set20:41
ornjwill try, thanks, elias20:41
elias_aornj: You're welcome...20:41
melodieornj ?21:11
melodieyou could also use my "heavy-dumb" method (additionnally to what is said above)21:12
melodieinstall vlc, mplayer, and dvdrip, (not to rip, just to use it's debug mode)21:12
melodiethen start dvdrip, find the debug menu, start it, add anything which is presented in red characters, except "hal" of course, then retry to read your dvd21:13
melodieelias_a I think I am on the good path for that install. I now know for sure the partition is of the GPT type, with EFI used in Windows, after I flashed the BIOS I was able to start a CD, but I don't have DVD's, and the Fr Ubuntu doc states only the Ubuntu official and officially supported derivated can boot to EFI once installed. I don't know if this is right, but I can't test, the machine isn't mine.21:15
ornji should probably instal vlc anyway21:23
millerthegorillahi, when does the next ubuntu studio release come out?22:59
ObrienDave15.04, next month sometime unless they went to LTS only23:01
millerthegorillacool thanks.  I wasn't sure that it wasn't on a rolling release or something.  I'm trying out the new xfce on fedora 22 alpha at the moment, and it is such an improvement on the last xfce that I cant' wait to try ubu studio again.23:02
ObrienDavestudio uses XFCE by default. welcome back to Ubuntu :)23:10
melodiegood night23:55
