ornj | does ubuntu studio come with any software for ripping DVDs? | 11:10 |
---|---|---|
elias_a | ornj: Yes, there are several. | 11:18 |
ornj | ok! :) | 11:18 |
elias_a | ornj: Search with sw installation tool | 11:18 |
ornj | i should be clear; which is most conducive to ripping a short clip, as opposed to the entire disc? | 11:18 |
elias_a | ornj: The libraries and tools needed are the same. | 11:21 |
elias_a | ornj: describe your case - I'll try to follow. | 11:21 |
ornj | i have a dvd of material to which i own the copyright; i would like to rip a short clip to upload to youtube. | 11:23 |
ornj | right now i'm reading the wiki on framerates because i'm staring, slack-jawed, at kdenlive trying to figure out what i want my default video profile to be. | 11:24 |
elias_a | ornj: Something like this? http://helpdeskgeek.com/linux-tips/extract-individual-tracks-from-a-dvd-using-acidrip-for-linux/ | 11:24 |
ornj | perhaps | 11:25 |
ornj | i don't think i want the entire track but i guess in my mind i'd chop it down with some video editor first, anyway. | 11:25 |
elias_a | You want the "title" (= track on video DVD). Then use editor. | 11:26 |
ornj | yes, thank you ;) | 11:27 |
ornj | i thought i knew what was up, knowing a thing or two about red book cd's, but dvd's are wacky. ;) | 11:27 |
elias_a | ornj: Yes quite different realm. :) | 11:35 |
elias_a | ornj: Nevertheless I like linux tools when it comes to video. | 11:36 |
ornj | that's why i installed ubuntu studio. ;) | 11:36 |
elias_a | ornj: I just love saying "dvgrab -autosplit nameofevent" and the DV is grabbed from my DV cassette camera. | 11:38 |
elias_a | There's nothing that beatiful in win or mac world. | 11:38 |
ornj | well, dvgrab could be compiled for bsd, could it not? ;) | 11:39 |
millerthegorilla | hey there, does the current ubuntu studio release use xfce 4.12? or will I have to wait for the next release? | 11:43 |
elias_a | ornj: AFAIK yes but why bother? :D | 11:44 |
millerthegorilla | ? | 11:48 |
ornj | ok, second dumb question | 11:48 |
ornj | my phone uses some weird crappy .3gp format for video. | 11:49 |
ornj | if i would like to edit that before upload, would i use the same tool? | 11:49 |
millerthegorilla | I didn't like xfce 4.11 or what ever ubu studio was using. It crashed on a regular basis, so I started using kxstudio. However, the memory requirements of xfce are an advantage and I'm now using fedora 22 alpha which uses xfce 4.12 and its really, really good. | 11:49 |
millerthegorilla | Plus I can always add the kxstudio repos to ubu studio when its installed. | 11:50 |
elias_a | ornj: You mean "what editor can I use for this specific 3gp-video type"? | 11:50 |
millerthegorilla | Perhaps I should ask on the ubuntustudio-dev channel? Maybe they would know? | 11:50 |
elias_a | millerthegorilla: I think that would be wise, yse. | 11:51 |
elias_a | yes.. | 11:51 |
ornj | downloading acidrip now, elias_a, thank you. | 11:51 |
millerthegorilla | I'd rather not upgrade to xfce 4.12 from the current release as there are some major changes. I'll ask them thanks. | 11:51 |
ornj | elias_a>> yes, basically, i guess, yeah. | 11:51 |
ornj | what net is #ubuntustudio-dev on? | 11:52 |
elias_a | ornj: Just google for ubuntu sw able to read the format. Should be doable. | 11:54 |
ornj | well, then... | 11:56 |
ornj | for this acidrip clip do i want to use kdenlive, openshot, or pitivi to chop it down? | 11:56 |
elias_a | ornj: Do you also want me to choose your underwear? :P | 11:58 |
elias_a | ornj: Any of those is ok if able to handle the video format. | 11:59 |
ornj | ugh | 11:59 |
ornj | this is what i hate about the linux way... | 12:00 |
ornj | "we're all about choice!... there are over 200 options! pick whichever suits you best!" | 12:00 |
ornj | no. just tell me which is the "best" software for a given task :P | 12:01 |
ornj | so that's one less thing i have to think about + can get on with my day. | 12:01 |
ornj | this is why i have literally over a dozen web browsers on my computer, more than half of which i haven't tried yet | 12:05 |
melodie | hi | 17:38 |
melodie | can someone help me about how to install on a hard drive with more partitions than 4 primary? It might be a gpt table (there is a uefi, with windows 8) and I have not done such installs yet | 17:39 |
melodie | ? | 17:39 |
melodie | and how can I check if the partition table is indeed a gpt? | 17:39 |
elias_a | melodie: Use the live cd or USB drive | 17:55 |
elias_a | Use gparted to see the contents of your HDD. | 17:56 |
elias_a | That should give you all the info you need. | 17:56 |
melodie | hi elias_a | 17:57 |
melodie | usb drive does not work, the HP 250 G3 does not boot to usb | 17:58 |
melodie | no matter wha t | 17:58 |
melodie | we have reduced the size of Windows from within Windows with disk manager | 17:58 |
melodie | and we do have 5 partitions | 17:58 |
melodie | this is certain | 17:58 |
melodie | so you have answered beside my question :) | 17:59 |
melodie | well I found that parted -l will help | 17:59 |
melodie | for knowing if it is gpt | 17:59 |
melodie | then, I have been told gpt allows having more than 4 primary partitions | 17:59 |
melodie | so, I'll have to create one additional partition yet, for the boot ? | 18:00 |
elias_a | melodie: You're on the right track. | 18:48 |
elias_a | melodie: Strange. According to manual your machine should be able to boot from USB: http://h20565.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c04409519-1 | 18:54 |
elias_a | Well... whatever does the job is good enough. | 19:10 |
ornj | can someone help me play a dvd? | 20:31 |
ornj | i have ubuntu-restricted-addons installed and everything | 20:32 |
ornj | region-restricted error with totem, won't play with mplayer | 20:35 |
ObrienDave | try the gstreamer good, bad, ugly plugins in both .10 and 1.0 releases | 20:37 |
ornj | ok, i don't think i have bad, maybe aswhy | 20:37 |
ornj | oops, i forgot i was going to update my system before asking this question :P | 20:38 |
ornj | :-/ | 20:38 |
elias_a | https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/PlayingDVDs | 20:38 |
ornj | Yes, I did that. | 20:38 |
ornj | (Ah-ha, the wiki was down last night) | 20:39 |
ornj | oh, wait | 20:41 |
ornj | i was tired; maybe region's not set | 20:41 |
ornj | will try, thanks, elias | 20:41 |
elias_a | ornj: You're welcome... | 20:41 |
melodie | ornj ? | 21:11 |
melodie | you could also use my "heavy-dumb" method (additionnally to what is said above) | 21:12 |
melodie | install vlc, mplayer, and dvdrip, (not to rip, just to use it's debug mode) | 21:12 |
melodie | then start dvdrip, find the debug menu, start it, add anything which is presented in red characters, except "hal" of course, then retry to read your dvd | 21:13 |
melodie | elias_a I think I am on the good path for that install. I now know for sure the partition is of the GPT type, with EFI used in Windows, after I flashed the BIOS I was able to start a CD, but I don't have DVD's, and the Fr Ubuntu doc states only the Ubuntu official and officially supported derivated can boot to EFI once installed. I don't know if this is right, but I can't test, the machine isn't mine. | 21:15 |
ornj | i should probably instal vlc anyway | 21:23 |
millerthegorilla | hi, when does the next ubuntu studio release come out? | 22:59 |
ObrienDave | 15.04, next month sometime unless they went to LTS only | 23:01 |
millerthegorilla | cool thanks. I wasn't sure that it wasn't on a rolling release or something. I'm trying out the new xfce on fedora 22 alpha at the moment, and it is such an improvement on the last xfce that I cant' wait to try ubu studio again. | 23:02 |
ObrienDave | studio uses XFCE by default. welcome back to Ubuntu :) | 23:10 |
melodie | good night | 23:55 |
