[00:46] i have a quick question about kubuntu 14.10 and the dell m4600......when i shut the lid it goes to sleep, but when i open the lid again all i get is a mouse cursor and maybe some weird artifacting on the screen [00:46] any suggestions on how to fix it? [01:36] bitemeoftn: Hmmm. Seems like the screen locker is failing somehow, or the graphics drivers are wonky. What GPU and drivers are you running in that thing? [01:37] it's an nvidia quadro 1000m GPU, checking the driver settings now [01:38] using the recommended 331.113 nvidia driver [01:48] bitemeoftn: You could try disabling screen locking (System Settings -> Power Management -> Advanced Settings -> Lock screen on resume [checkbox]) and see if that helps. It should if my guess of some bad combo of your drivers and screen locking is correct. [01:53] i tried that, but i got the same results.....i'm thinking it's something with the card/drivers as well [01:58] keithzg: i'm able to use CTRL+ALT+F1 to login and sudo restart lightdm as a workaround for now [01:59] bitemeoftn: Fair enough. Have you tried nouveau instead of the nvidia drivers? (I know it's the obvious suggestion and there are probably reasons why you're running the binary blobs, but I figured it was worth bringing up) [02:00] keithzg: i do have apprehensions of using the nouveau driver, but i was actually just thinking about trying that [02:01] bitemeoftn: For older cards, it can often be a fair bit better, actually. If not always performance, at least in terms of stability. Definitely worth a try, at least. [02:03] keithzg: lol the laptop doesn't want to use it either apparently......i've tried to switch it a few times now and it keeps going back to the nvidia driver [02:05] brb, i'm going to try rebooting to see if it'll take then [02:05] Yeah it'll take at least a reboot (or manual loading/unloading) [02:09] that seems to have fixed it! [02:09] bitemeoftn: nice! [02:10] that seems to have fixed it! [02:13] not sure why i typed that twice [02:28] heh [02:28] heh [02:28] ;) === caine is now known as sets [04:36] Hello, I am trying to install the Kubuntu 15.04 beta. This is my first time installing a Kubuntu. I have two questions. [04:36] My first question, if I encounter documentable bugs while going through the installer & such (as it is a tech preview), do you have any advice on the proper avenue for filing bug reports. [04:37] My second question, I am in the installer. I am installing Kubuntu onto a drive which already posesses an install of Windows 8.1. It says at the bottom: Boot loader: Device for boot loader installation: and it is defaulting to /dev/sda1, where i think the windows recovery partition is. [04:37] What exactly does "boot loader installation" do? Would I be correct in thinking that installing this on any Microsoft-created partition would be disastrous? [04:41] mcc: the best way, hands down, to file bugs is `ubuntu-bug packagename` in the cli [04:42] about your Windows partition question, sorry, do not know [04:42] valorie, great. what would packagename be for the installer? [04:43] hmmm [04:44] it seems like there must be a bug tracker website somewhere that stuff like ubuntu-bug funnels into. [04:45] right, that is launchpad === shawn is now known as Guest16663 [04:45] I know that there is a name, I just can't recall it [04:46] ok. [04:46] !info bootloader [04:47] Package bootloader does not exist in utopic [04:47] of course [04:47] !boot [04:47] Boot options: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions - To add/remove startup services, you can use the package 'bum', or update-rc.d - To add your own startup scripts, use /etc/rc.local - See also !grub and !dualboot - Making a boot floppy: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto/BootFloppy - Also see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SmartBootManagerHowto [04:48] hmmm [04:48] well, the bootloader isn't what i want to file the bug on [04:48] right [04:48] i found just some simple gui bugs on the "prepare partitions" pane in the livecd installer. [04:48] ah [04:48] excellent, the beta is for filing bugs [04:50] this might be useful: http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/ [04:53] oh, interesting === pablo_ is now known as Henke1k === Henke1k is now known as henke1k [05:31] By the way, i'm a little confused about the relationship between Kubuntu and Ubuntu. [05:32] For example, the FAQ for this channel redirects to the Ubuntu website, and the iso tracker you sent me is for Kubuntu not Ubuntu. [05:39] Kubuntu is one of the flavors of Ubuntu [05:40] it gets a bit confusing because they call the unity flavor Ubuntu [05:40] however the Ubuntu community encompasses us all, xubuntu, lubuntu, gnomebuntu [05:40] we were first however [05:41] this is the tenth anniversary for Kubuntu, and we are entirely community produced [05:41] I tend to call that one 'Mainbuntu' [05:42] ubuntu runs the iso tracker for all the releases [05:42] And, you know, the repos, cdimage building, automated testing, etc, etc. :P [05:44] right, our infra (except our website) is all from ubuntu [05:51] that's all very helpful. [05:52] thank you for the help! i have some interesting bug reports and will try to get them on the iso tracker tomorrow. [05:53] Here is my favorite bug I encountered, by the way, if you're curious... :) https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CAb5zjtUkAAtbI2.jpg https://pbs.twimg.com/media/CAb6RzeUYAIpOP4.jpg [05:54] ha, I've seen that but never reported it [05:55] well, i'll try to report it tomorrow [05:55] excellent, thank you [05:55] while i have your attention, if i'm hitting that problem, how should i reboot/shut down in such a way it kicks me back to GRUB? [05:55] when i tried reboot or shutdown -h now, it kicked me back to the kubuntu startup, not to GRUB. [05:57] actually, i think i'm falling asleep, so if you respond to that i will not see your response ^_^ thanks again for the help, goodnight === havingFun is now known as xrosnight [06:45] Why there no option to disable Connection Activated/Deactivated in Network Notifications Kubuntu? [06:56] donniezazen: ? [06:57] can you say more what you mean, and exactly what you are using? [06:59] valorie: Those are the exact terms but let me explain. When you lose connection, you get notified via a pop and an entry labeled Connection Deactivated. When you connect to a network you again get Connection Activate. These entries are missing in Kubuntu. [06:59] hmm, I see those [07:00] I did in 14.10 with and without the next ppa [07:00] I see it now in Vivid [07:00] valorie: http://i.imgur.com/eja7sms.png [07:00] Then probably a bug in LTS. [07:01] I guess [07:04] Both Qt-creator and Chrome suffer from graphical glitches. http://imgur.com/8uJB1Gm and http://imgur.com/psoHGqn [07:04] on the LTS version. [07:05] sounds like a driver problem [07:08] maybe [07:15] good morning [08:43] Hi everybody [08:44] I'm at the moment on Kubuntu 14.04, plasma4. Will it be enough a distribution update to get plasma5? [08:44] rawi: No [08:45] hateball: thanks! so I'd need an install from scratch for the next Kubuntu, yes? [08:46] rawi: No, you can just do-release-upgrade [08:46] Depending on how you want to go about things, you can upgrade to 14.10, then to 15.04 [08:46] or wait for the next LTS which will be 16.04 [08:46] that's what I meand first. but then I would stay with plasma4? [08:47] rawi: Plasma 5 will be default in 15.04 [08:47] I'm not sure if there's a PPA for 14.04 that has all the KF/Plasma 5 stuff [08:47] hateball: OK, then do-release-upgrade will be enough. thanks [09:59] Good morning.
