tnkhanhmparillo: thtanks, I did it00:58
tnkhanhmparillo: some weird bugs appear but I solved it now00:58
tnkhanhmparillo: I had to install from the GUI, from the bash shell it will fail01:00
mparillotnkhanh: In that case, you might want to add your answer to askubuntu.com so the next person has it easier. I would hold off updating the help wiki until you are certain your approach works and the bash shell fails.01:02
mparilloAfter all, one more answer is good, but deleting something from a wiki is a bigger step, because it might work for most, just not for you, and if you are not sure of yourself, that would be a shame.01:03
tnkhanhmparillo: hm I'm not so sure. Maybe its some other bug. This is just what I remember01:04
mparilloI understand. Mis-information is worse than none at all. Just keep looking for little ways to pay the community back.01:07
billvHowdy;  I hope this is the right place for this question.  If not, please point me in the right direction.  Does anyone know what protocol/mechanism is used by apport for it's communication?  The manual user/passwd entry I use for email won't work for apport.  What I'm looking into, is doing a netcat wrapper, or something similar to get apport working.  Thanks.01:29

mar11I want to know if there is a terminal code for knowing that ny notherboard and bios can support 64 bit os08:00
mar11my motherboard and bios08:00
mar11thanks man08:01
hateballmar11: "grep lm /proc/cpuinfo"08:01
mar11type in termianl08:01
mar11?08:01
hateballyep08:01
hateballlm means long mode, which means the cpu is 64-bit capable08:02
mar11it says :flags           : fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush mmx fxsr sse sse2 syscall nx mmxext fxsr_opt rdtscp lm 3dnowext 3dnow up extd_apicid pni cx16 lahf_lm extapic cr8_legacy 3dnowprefetch08:03
mar11what does it mean?08:03
mar11I know my cpu can support it but I want to know can my motherboard & bios suppot it08:05
hateballeh... if you're running the CPU, that in itself means the motherboard supports it08:05
hateballand it says lm there, so you're good to go08:05
mar11thanks man08:06
hateballmar11: is it an older cpu?08:06
mar11I want to install kubunu 64bit 14.0408:06
mar11I think it is blong to 4-5 years ago08:07
hateball"grep model /proc/cpuinfo"08:07
hateballit's likely fine08:07
mar11I want to know if I can backup my customis and software from 32 bir to 64 bir kde08:08
mar11bot08:08
mar11bit08:08
mar11can I?08:08
soeewhat you want to backup is your apps settings etc. theey will work fine for 64 bit when proper app version is isntalled08:11
soeethose settings are simple files08:11
mar11no I want to complete backup all my software and kind of my icons that is downloaded so that I don't have to download and install then again in my new kubuntu08:16
mar11did I made it clear?08:18
valoriemar11: that sounds like a bad idea imo08:19
valorievery quick to install from the repos08:19
valorieand you'll have the correct version, with the correct underlying libs, etc.08:19
mar11why?why you say something like that?08:20
valoriewhat you need is a backup of your own personal data, and perhaps your settings if you have modified things a lot08:20
valorieotherwise, just your data08:20
valorieif you have custom icons, those too08:21
valorieapplications install very quickly08:21
mar11Im in iran and the internet is very slow and sometimes it not conect at all08:21
valorieah08:21
valorie:(08:21
mar11I nearly have no chose08:21
valorieyou'll have 32-bit versions of applications08:21
valorierather than 6408:21
valorieso what would be the point of installing 64-bit?08:22
mar11yes I think so after all ny os is a 32bir version08:22
valoriejust stick with it -- I've tried identical installs one 64, one 3208:22
valorieand there was really no difference08:22
hateballThat's.. really very usecase specific08:23
valorieI thought 64 would be newer, faster, snazzier08:23
hateballIt is, provided you have the hardware08:23
valorienot so much08:23
hateballIf you need to allocate more than 2GB for a process, you're going to have a bad time on 32-bit. And so on.08:23
valoriehateball: what would you advise mar11?08:23
valoriesure, building amarok was slower08:24
mar11so that you say it is no use to install 64 bit os?08:24
valoriebut how many people do that?08:24
hateballIf you have 4GB+ RAM, there's speed and security advantages to using 64-bit OS08:24
hateballBut if it's hard to reinstall applications due to bandwidth concerns, well that's pretty much the dealbreaker08:25
mar11so if I want to use something like viber what should I do08:28
mar11?08:28
hateballmar11: I doubt there's a single piece of software you use that does not have a 64-bit version08:29
hateballEven if there's software that only provides 32-bit binaries, you can install multi-arch libs to run 32-bit code as well08:29
hateballIt's "only" a matter of installing it from the repos, but this of course means you need to have a connection to the internet08:30
mar11this the problam the viber app is 64 bit08:30
hateballYes, you can't run 64-bit code on 32-bit OS. But the other way around works.08:31
mar11and I have 3GB ran08:31
mar11I aware of that08:31
hateballYes, so 64-bit OS is the way to go. Backup your data in $HOME and reinstall.08:31
mar11and sounds like I must insatall kubuntu 32 bir08:32
hateballNo, what makes it sound like that?08:32
mar11so how should I backup?08:32
mar11my ram is low08:32
mar113GB08:32
hateball3GB is plenty08:32
hateballEven 2GB is fine08:32
mar11for 64bit?08:33
mar11sure?08:33
hateballThe overhead of 64-bit is not really much to worry about08:33
hateballYes, I run 64-bit on 1GB machines as well08:33
mar11is it really faster than 32 bit os?08:34
hateballFor certain operations yes08:34
hateballThat rely on those functions in the cpu08:34
mar11what?08:34
hateballFor every day use, you probably wont notice it much08:34
hateballBut you get the added benefit of security features like ASLR08:35
mar11so how should I back up my customize and apps?08:35
hateballAnyhow, if you have an external drive of some sort the easiest way is to just live-boot your machine and copy over what data you need from your $HOME to that drive08:35
mar11so that I won't needed to insatall from internet08:36
hateballIf you have /home on a separate partition, you should only need to reinstall and not format /home08:36
valorieor just rsync it08:36
hateballmar11: There is no way to copy over installed 32-bit applications on your 32-bit OS to a new 64-bit install08:36
hateballNo feasible way I should say... everything is possible08:36
hateballBut that will end up causing more headache than it is worth08:37
mar11what should I do about my icons custom?08:37
hateballmar11: Where are those icons stored?08:37
mar11copy and paste just work?08:37
mar111 sec08:38
hateballYes, everything that is just "data" can just be backuped and transfered to a new machine08:38
hateballLike documents, images, etc08:38
mar11and how can I install os without formating home partion?08:39
mar11they are in /usr/share08:40
hateballmar11: Do you have a separate partition for /home now?08:40
mar11yes08:40
hateballThe installer will let you pick advanced options08:40
hateballThere should be some guide somewhere....08:40
mar11do you have any link to I go and see myself?08:41
hateballmar11: this is an old image, but it looks pretty much the same http://laffers.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/snapshot3.png08:42
hateballSo you tell the installer to mount say sda1 as / and it must format. Then you pick sda2 or wherever you have /home now as /home, and do NOT format08:42
hateballif you install with the same username etc as you have now, it should be just fine08:43
hateballmar11: Please ask your questions in channel so that others may help and learn09:03
mar11actully my /home is sda7 should I mark it as home partion again in installing process?09:04
hateballYep, there should be a dropdown list what you want to mount it as09:04
hateballJust make very very sure you do not format /home... It is always good to have backups in any case09:05
mar11when I don't format home partion all my apps seting will be ther after new install09:05
mar11?09:05
mar11even 32bit apps?09:05
hateballmar11: And if you had custom data in /usr, that will get wiped when you reinstall and format /, so you need to copy that somewhere like your /home09:06
hateballmar11: Yes, all settings are saved in your /home09:06
hateballIf you run some system services like say... apache, there may be configurations saved in /etc09:06
hateballSo you will need to backup those as well09:06
mar11what about the apps I must install again?09:06
hateballBut the actual 32-bit applications, those will be wiped and needed to reinstall09:06
hateball!clone09:06
ubottuTo replicate your packages selection on another machine (or restore it if re-installing), you can use the !software package "apt-clone" - See also !automate09:06
hateballmar11: You can use this to pull a list of what you have installed now, so it is easier to reinstall them later09:07
hateballBut it will still need to download the new 64-bit versions over the internet09:07
hateballOh and also... the packages on 32-bit and 64-bit might not be the same09:08
hateballThe names that is09:08
mar11so what you say is when I install an app which is 64bit now its setting can be trasfer from 32bit old app?09:09
mar11is that right?09:09

BluesKajif the boot stalls then run , systemctl enable sddm11:21
lordievaderalvin: Did you have a plasma5 ppa enabled when you upgraded to Vivid?11:22
alvinI had to convince the package manager of some things, but on the whole, this succeeded nicely. Had to downgrade bluedevil and there's still no font preview.11:22
alvinlordievader: Hmm, Yes, I think so, but the upgrade disabled that PPA.11:22
lordievaderalvin: It disabled the sources.... Upgrading with such a ppa enabled is broken.11:22
alvinI followed the proper procedure. All PPA's were disabled.11:23
alvinAnd it worked. Even Akonadi still works.11:23
lordievaderalvin: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/kubuntu-devel/2015-March/009274.html11:24
aftereyoIt looks like ark cannot create zips with password11:25
aftereyowhat are some other filer compressor I should try?11:25
alvinlordievader: Oho, seems like I upgraded in time then. Really. it works fine.11:27
alvinaftereyo: That might be a proprietary option. I don't really know. But typical Unix compression software doesn't give you the options to use a password. That's done with other software, like gnupg.11:28
lordievaderalvin: Hmm, that is good to hear.11:28
alvinaftereyo: Wait. I should have read the manual first! It's zip --encrypt11:28
alvinark probarbly just doesn't show you that option.11:29
alvin"We warned next users long ago that upgrade to 15.04 would not be supported.", but apparently I didn't get the memo and did it anyway. Well. No regrets :-)11:32
BluesKajdev OSs always come with caveats as I'm sure you're aware11:35
alvinAbsolutely!11:35
lordievaderElse it wouldn't be fun ;)11:35
alvinThat's the thing. I wouldn't have upgraded now if I really wanted a stable system.11:36
BluesKajstilll have the odd crash here and there, but not while running,  the crash notifier pops up with some apps right after closing them11:41
alvinThat happens a lot with Firefox. Crash on close.11:41
faustyI had screen flickrs a lot and a lot of bug pop ups some i reverted back to plasma 411:42
faustyIt does look really nice, I'm sure many people will use it once its final11:43
alvinOh, yes. It needs some polishing, but looks fine already. I wonder about this font preview rendering bug: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=336089 It was also visible on the demo system at Fosdem, while most people say their font preview looks fine.11:44
ubottuKDE bug 336089 in kcm_fontinst "Font preview - rendering problem" [Normal,Unconfirmed]11:44

jbwivguys, I've switched Ubuntu 14.10 to Kubuntu by apt-get install kubuntu-desktop. However, over time (say 24 hours) i find that kde really starts to slow down and become sluggish. kwin tends to use a fair amount of cpu, but nothing I'd say was overwhelming to this box (dual quad core/8GB ram/GeForce GTX 650 Ti)12:59
jbwivis this a common problem, and is there a way to fix without completely logging out/back in or shutting down X?12:59
faustyWould anyone know how to install KDM from apt-get or PPA, ...? thx13:10
BluesKajfausty, why , what's the issue with lightdm?13:11
faustyLightDM loads the orginal Ubuntu wallpaper right before it loads KDE, I find it slightly anoying..13:12
soeefausty: install lightdm-kde-greeter13:14
soeethan it wont install all unity dependencies13:14

faustyI installed Ubuntu, then installed Gnome Flashback then KDE and now I'm here, light DM was present when I booted up KDE the first time in System Settings...13:25
MarbugHi I've downloaded kubuntu, and I want to install it on an atom mini laptop where a windows7 is on. is it possible to install a dualboot?13:25
faustyMarbug, Yes, you'll have to shrink C: partion using windows built in partion editor search 'partition' when you click on the Start button, after you shrink the partion boot ubuntu live cd and the new empty partion make it a Ext4 file system, mount it as '/' and install, ... not sure which version of ubuntu would run on an atom processor prolly 32bit13:29
Marbugfausty, amd64 would run on it, by shrinking the C: partition, do I need to shrink it before for a boot partition where the grub can reside on? Or may it also be after the C: partition ?13:31
faustyUbuntu would do all the grub work for you13:31
BluesKajfausty, does windows allow shrinking the C partition while it's in use ? or can you unmount it in the partiton manager and proceed from there?13:35
faustyit allows shrinking while the system is in use, just look over the numbers and make sure it doesn't shrink to much on you, windows will determine how much it can give up to the new partition, you have some control over so just look it over before clicking next13:37
Marbugwel in my case I don't need to shrink the C: partition as there is a datapartition I can use. I'm on vacation and there is a laptop, but we have only 3G here, I don't want to take the risk to install ubuntu on that laptop if the stick won't work afterwards, or if there would be problems. But if everything will go automated with just a partition you need to have free, that would be cool13:38
Marbugnow hoping windows wouldn't jerk :-)13:39
faustyWell if your new to Linux there will be some hiccups along the way ;)13:40
MarbugI'm new :unsure:13:41
Marbug;-)13:41
Marbugyou could say I'm new to windows hahahha13:42

faustyThen again I could boot Gnome and set the Wallpaper to black and not see it before them boot...13:50

LINKSWORD2Hey, Blues? What would you say are the best programs / apps for Kubuntu?18:51
BluesKajLINKSWORD2, that's a matter of personal interest, tastes, and preferences ..depnds what kinds of things you like to do on your pc18:53
LINKSWORD2Graphics/Audio editing, general purpose (mail, browsers, etc.) Although I also would like to learn more about the Linux kernel and programming, if that's an avenue I might be able to explore.18:54
BluesKajLINKSWORD2,  check this out http://www.linuxveda.com/2014/12/06/things-installing-kubuntu-click-next/18:55
LINKSWORD2BluesKaj: And what do you use your Linux machine for?18:56
* genii sips and ponders GIMP and FreeCAD. 18:56
MoonUnit`they should add 'use numix in plasma5 so it looks less depressing'18:57
BluesKajthis pc is my media server and irc chat machine , plus some othe mundane everyday stuff like email and browsing18:57
BluesKajLINKSWORD2, sorry that site i just posted is somewhat dated18:59

LINKSWORD2Is there a way to get the system to not ask for password authentication for updates?19:06
BluesKajLINKSWORD2, I use myusername  ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL in the sudoers file , in the terminal: sudo visudo and add the phrase above the last line in the text , then , ctl+o, enter  and ctl+x to save and exit the file19:12
LINKSWORD2in Konsole?19:12
BluesKajthis will work for most apps tto19:12
BluesKajyes in the konsole/terminal19:13
LINKSWORD2I guess I don't have enough understanding of how to put it in with proper syntax.19:15
BluesKajopen the konsole type sudo visudo19:16
LINKSWORD2Got that far. Next?19:17
BluesKajLINKSWORD2, i use this;  kaj ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL  , so substitute your username where kaj is19:17
BluesKajok , copied and pasted ?19:21
LINKSWORD2Think so.19:23
BluesKajright above the last line in the text , you use the down arrow key to navigate to the bottom19:23
LINKSWORD2Got it19:24
BluesKajnow ctl+o , then enter, then ctl+x , that should save the file and exit back to the konsole prompt19:25
LINKSWORD2Looks good to me. Thanks.19:26
BluesKajok19:26
BluesKajyou will need to relogin to make it work19:27
LINKSWORD2Too lazy to log out and back in. LOL19:27

JiyuhenQuestion - I am thinking of installing / Using Plasma 5 with my Kubuntu.21:55
JiyuhenDo I go by the Windows saying of never change a running system or?21:55
valoriethat depends on what you use your computer for, Jiyuhen21:56
valorieI use plasma 5 daily and have been for about six months21:57
valorieI'm running Vivid beta right now, and it is mostly excellent21:57
soeei can confirm what valorie says21:57
Jiyuhenvalorie: Basic stuff like E-mail a bit of browsing and the occasional gaming.21:57
JiyuhenI am thinking of trying some programming later, but first want to get to know Kubuntu21:58
valorieJiyuhen: you can always download the iso and burn it to USB21:58
valorieand try it out, see if it uses all your equipment correctly21:58
Jiyuhensoee:  Thanks! So, it is stable enough21:58
Jiyuhenvalorie: Thank you for the tip!21:59
Jiyuhenvalorie: Would work in a VM as well, right?21:59
valoriehmmm, I think there have been some vm glitches21:59
valorieit works in KVM, I know21:59
valoriedo you know about that soee?22:00
Jiyuhenvalorie: Does it? Thank you so much - I be trying that! :)22:01
valoriehttps://wiki.kubuntu.org/VividVervet/Beta1/Kubuntu - Jiyuhen22:02
soeeVB had some problems, but after playing a bit with its settings it worked22:03
Jiyuhenvalorie: Cheers for the link, I am reading it now :)22:04
valorie:-)22:05
JiyuhenNice! Thus Plasma, will be the standard from now on moving forward.22:05
JiyuhenIt does look really nice I have to admit.22:06
valorieyes, I love the look22:06
valorieof course there will be other themes as time goes on22:06
valoriebut they have refactored everything, and it is smooth as butter22:06
JiyuhenOk, let's do it! I am opening the terminal now valorie ;-)22:08
valoriebe sure you have a good backup before doing anything else!22:11
JiyuhenCheck22:11
* valorie recently made the mistake and only had an old backup.....22:11
Jiyuhenuh! That happened to me a couple of weeks ago too, when I just started to use Kubuntu. It was not pretty...22:12
Jiyuhenvalorie: It mostly also just happens when you need to go to bed, but you cannot because the computer isn t running..22:13
valorieI now keep that one precious text file on dropbox Just In Case22:13
valoriewhy I didn't before, no idea22:13
JiyuhenIn dropbox! That is a excellent idea!22:14
JiyuhenHaven't even considered doing that - but yes22:14
JiyuhenWe learn from our pains valorie. :)22:14
valorieindeed22:15
valorieyou'd think I would have learned after so *many* mistakes though, lol22:15
lordievadervalorie: KVM works nicely with Vivid.22:16
lordievaderI've heard of problems with VB + Vivid (not only Kubuntu, Ubuntu too).22:17
valorieI heard good things, yes -- not just for vivid, but for plasma 5 in general, even from source22:17
Jiyuhengoede avond lordie!22:18
Jiyuhenvalorie: Na, never...that be boring ! lol22:18
JiyuhenAlright folks - wish me look. I am about to reboot22:19

Hawkeye_Alright - Desktop was a bit sluggish. So I rewerded back. Funny enough - Now I have a new Desktop with underlying my old desktop as it looks like. Weird23:21
valorieHawkeye_: "rewerded"?23:26
Hawkeye_de installed the packaged or purged them23:28
Hawkeye_Might also be the reason, why I cannot change my username atm.23:28
Hawkeye_Because, I am online already...this is weird valorie23:29
Hawkeye_Like a desktop on top of my other dekstop weird23:29
valorieI've been noticing a bug lately in Vivid which I've not reported yet where the slideshow isn't removing the previous image23:31
Hawkeye_you mean, that is what happend?23:34
Hawkeye_My one user has multiplied?23:34
valorienot in my case23:40
valorieit seems the previous image is not erased23:40
Hawkeye_sounds plausible, yes23:42
