n-iCeHello guys01:52
ianorlinn-iCe: any way I can help?01:58
n-iCeianorlin: Well, thinking about moving to lubuntu02:05
n-iCeI am using Arch with fluxbox02:05
n-iCethis is when you try to convince me to do it02:13
n-iCe:p02:13
ianorlinn-iCe: that might be lighter02:17
ianorlinapt has easier to remeber names than just the single letters of pacman02:17
CoolishPrune_Hello02:33
CoolishPrune_I am new to Lubuntu. I have 14.10 installed on a Dell Inspiron B130. I have no problems getting wired connectivity until now. I went to Software and Updates and then over to the Drivers tab and tried to Apply Changes to the WiFi hardware. It seemed like the process fail and I did a reboot and the second time the bar completed but never finished. I gave it about 15 minutes and rebooted again. However, now I cant even connect wi02:33
ianorlinCoolishPrune_: can you try booting with an old kernel hold down shift at boot if not a dual boot system to get to grub and select advanced optoins for ubuntu02:36
CoolishPrune_Im trying something out right now that I got from the forums02:36
ianorlinand select and earlier kernel02:36
CoolishPrune_Ok let this process over here finish.02:36
CoolishPrune_im doing sudo apt-get update02:37
CoolishPrune_with the configure -a02:37
CoolishPrune_Do I call you Ian or Lin?02:37
CoolishPrune_lol02:37
ianorlin!tab02:38
ubottuYou can use your <tab> key for autocompletion of nicknames in IRC, as well as for completion of filenames and programs on the command line.02:38
ianorlinboth using that02:38
CoolishPrune_okay so sudo apt-get dist-upgrade didnt do anything02:39
CoolishPrune_I dont think its connected to the internet02:39
CoolishPrune_Im going to try the long command then we will try what u said02:39
CoolishPrune_Yeah it didnt return any info02:40
kianianorlin: what's your idea of configuring display sleep?02:41
CoolishPrune_I think because im disconnected02:41
ianorlinkian that depends on what you want02:41
kianianorlin: Regardless of my xfce4-power-manager settings the desktop sleeps by itself in a short period of time.02:41
kianianorlin: also thank you so much for your help yesterday, everything worked out and it's working beautifully.02:42
CoolishPrune_Okay Im in GRUB ianorlin02:42
ianorlinum do you see advanced options for ubuntu02:43
CoolishPrune_Do I select Ubunto or adv options02:43
ianorlinadvanced options02:43
ianorlinwill bring you to another menu02:43
ianorlinselect an older kernel not recovery mode02:43
CoolishPrune_31 31 recovery 23 23 recovery02:43
CoolishPrune_31 or 2302:43
CoolishPrune_23?02:43
CoolishPrune_3.16.0-2302:44
ianorlintry 2302:44
CoolishPrune_or 3.16.0-3102:44
CoolishPrune_ok02:44
ianorlinI like to update more often as then I won't have to go back as far02:44
ianorlinand you get secuirty patches but that won't matter for a new install02:44
CoolishPrune_Ok Im up02:45
CoolishPrune_it showing disconnected still02:45
CoolishPrune_and Im plugged into wired02:45
CoolishPrune_to my router02:45
ianorlinCoolishPrune_: do you have a live cd dvd or usb ?02:46
ianorlintry booting into the live session to see if you messed up configuratoin somehow02:46
CoolishPrune_i have access to dvd/rw's and I have might be able to do usb cable connect and i have a small USB drive02:47
CoolishPrune_reboot back to normal?02:48
ianorlinCoolishPrune_: do you have another ethernet cable?02:49
ianorlincould try that in case of bad cable02:49
ianorlinCoolishPrune_: you still get internet from the router right02:49
CoolishPrune_give me a minute02:49
CoolishPrune_i should02:50
CoolishPrune_yup got it02:50
CoolishPrune_Yes I do still have connection form router02:50
CoolishPrune_this computer is on the same router connection02:50
CoolishPrune_WiFi02:50
ianorlinare there any free ethernet ports at back of router maybe try another one02:51
CoolishPrune_did you want me to reboot lubuntu?02:51
ianorlinyay try newest kernel again02:52
CoolishPrune_loading -3102:53
CoolishPrune_nothing02:55
CoolishPrune_Should I try adding a connection manually02:55
holsteini'll try the windows driver, with ndiswrapper, with some hardware that doesnt support linux02:55
CoolishPrune_Oh wait02:56
CoolishPrune_it finally came back02:57
CoolishPrune_not the connection02:57
CoolishPrune_but in the additional drivers tab02:57
holsteina broadcom blob you can add? occasionally, there is more than just one02:57
CoolishPrune_BCM4318 AreForce One 54g 802.11g wireless lan02:57
holsteinthese days, i'll just swap the hardware, since, its so much easier than fighting with it02:57
CoolishPrune_below gives me the choice to use alternate driver02:58
CoolishPrune_broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver02:58
ianorlinah I have one that works with it unfortanelty02:58
CoolishPrune_twice ived tried this and it stalls02:58
holsteinyup.. i would try that, and *any* other drivers as well.. also, the windows driver is an option02:58
holstein!broadcom02:58
ubottuHelp with Broadcom bcm43xx can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx02:58
ianorlinthat is a 4322 and my moms 4313 worked with it02:58
holstein^ that should tell you want driver is "best" and with what compromises02:58
CoolishPrune_So do I revert or apply changes to the broadcom02:59
ianorlinyou need to be connected for that to work02:59
CoolishPrune_Oh02:59
CoolishPrune_Well Why cant i get connectd anymore02:59
holsteinCoolishPrune_: i will literally try *all* options.. and i will get wired so its "easier"02:59
CoolishPrune_I clciked aplly changes03:01
CoolishPrune_HDD spinning03:01
CoolishPrune_ok03:02
CoolishPrune_it finsihed that time03:02
CoolishPrune_Still having the same problems03:04
CoolishPrune_should I revert back?03:04
kianianorlin: sleep problems help plssss?03:05
holsteinCoolishPrune_: i dont konw what you "should" do, but, i would try *all* options, including the windows driver via ndiswrapper..03:06
holsteinkian: just ask, and if a volunteer can assist, they will03:06
kianholstein: will do03:06
kianLubuntu fresh install, sleeps after 15 or so minutes, regardless of xfce4-power-manager settings03:07
kian14.04.02 lts, 32bit03:07
holsteinkian: you mean, the monitor? or the unit sleeps?03:07
kianholstein: monitor03:08
holsteinkian: i remove the screensaver..03:09
ianorlinthat works03:09
kianholstein: how so?03:09
ianorlinsudo apt-get purge light-locker03:09
CoolishPrune_ianorlin: reverted, rebooted, still cant get wired connectivty03:10
ianorlinis one way by the command line or remove light-locker by syanpitic or lubuntu-software-center03:10
holsteinCoolishPrune_: did wired work with the live iso? are you sure the hardware is not broken?03:10
CoolishPrune_Yeah it was working before i applied changes in software & updates in the dirvers tab03:10
holsteinCoolishPrune_: in that case, i would just boot my older kernel, and file a bug03:11
holstein!bug03:11
ubottuIf you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.03:11
holsteinyou shouldnt need a driver for the wired network..03:11
ianorlinholstein: I guided him to booting older kernel and still didn't work03:11
holsteini find, *if* my wired network doesnt work, its either a bad NIC, or its just *never* going to work03:11
ianorlinCoolishPrune_: can you plug your laptop in and make sure not bad cable03:12
holsteini had one machine that, i had to pull the power cord out, to get the NIC back..03:12
CoolishPrune_ianorlin: i got a brand new cable right here I will try03:12
CoolishPrune_ianorlin: i might need to reset the router03:12
holsteinCoolishPrune_: dont try new, try *known* good03:13
holsteinCoolishPrune_: test and see that it is good.. new is unknown.. and can be broken.03:13
CoolishPrune_I have a ethernet cable tester03:13
holsteinCoolishPrune_: i dont.. i literally see that the device/cord is working, then, i use it03:13
kianianorlin: I did that command and it want to remove03:15
kianlubuntu-desktop03:15
kiandon't I need that...03:15
holsteinkian: thats the meta-package03:16
kianholstein: pardon?03:16
holstein!lubuntu-desktop03:16
ubottuk/ed/x/l/ubuntu-desktop is a metapackage. It depends upon other packages and brings them in; you can safely remove it, but it is recommended that you re-install it when upgrading.03:16
kianholstein: http://a.pomf.se/bhysnm.png03:16
holsteinkian: research *exactly* what that package is and does.. know how to revert regardless..03:16
holsteinyou should *always* have a backup, not becuase you are removing lubuntu-desktop, but, becuase all hard drives fail..03:17
kianholstein: that is true03:17
kianbut I'm confused03:17
kianIt's uninstalling all that stuff03:17
kianif I uninstall then then run auto-remove am i essentially destroying the environment?03:17
holsteinkian: "it" does what you ask03:17
holsteinkian: i dont know what you are destroying, but, if you remove lubuntu-desktop, as stated above its just the meta-package03:18
holsteinkian: if you want to paste the entire output for review, go for it..03:18
holstein!paste03:18
ubottuFor posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imgur.com/ !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.03:18
kianholstein: I linked a screenshot03:18
holsteinkian: cool.. if you want, paste it where i and the other volunteers can easily review the material, or, know how to revert and just try it yourself..03:19
kianholstein: http://paste.ubuntu.com/10665982/03:19
CoolishPrune_ianorlin: changed cable I noticed when I uplugged it the click wasnt acting right03:20
CoolishPrune_ianorlin: we are go for green now03:20
holsteinkian: light-locker* light-locker-settings* lubuntu-desktop*03:20
holsteinkian: light-locker is what you are removing, and lubuntu-desktop is 'safe to remove'..03:20
kianas you said lubuntu-desktop is a meta package which is essentially just a "package" that installs all the packages that makeup the desktop environment, no?03:20
kianholstein: okay now for my own knowledge03:20
kianAll the packages that are after line 5 on that page, are the packages that come with lubuntu-desktop?03:21
holsteinkian: thats not a list of what comes with lubuntu, no03:21
holsteinkian: thats what, as states "is no longer needed".. or considered so..03:22
kianRight but a lot of that stuff is needed for operation isn't it? xorg for instance, the video players if I want to play videos on the device, etc.03:22
CoolishPrune_ianorlin: let me reboot into new kernel03:22
holsteinkian: dont remove it, then03:22
kianSo is it possible to just remove light-locker without effecting lubuntu-desktop or any other packages?03:22
holsteinkian: i dont suggest you do.. just those 3 are all you are removing.. light-locker* light-locker-settings* lubuntu-desktop*03:22
kianEven if not remove to just "disable" it?03:23
holsteinkian: im just saying, i removed the screensaver..03:23
kianRight and it seems like the solution to my problem.03:23
holsteinkian: i didnt have any issues, or a long list of thigns.. i dont know the history of your system03:23
kianholstein: there is no history, just an old workstation I plopped behind my TV to use a media machine.03:23
kianjust installed lubuntu yesterday03:24
CoolishPrune_ianorlin: ??03:24
holsteinthen, proceed with no worries, and no that it only took a few minutes to install, and you can easily reinstall.. and you have no data on there03:24
holsteinCoolishPrune_: if you want to reboot into a new kernel, go for it03:25
kianholstein: mhmmmm I see now.03:25
kiankinda makes me nervous since I feel like I'll do this and then later on down the line I'll run "apt-get autoremove" and remove all the stuff I did need03:25
kianwhich is just me forgetting about what I'm doing today03:26
holsteindont be nervous.. *all* hard drives fail.. if you have something important, back it up, and plan for that failure..03:26
holsteinby preparing for that, you'll have the freedom to do what you need to do with any system03:26
kianholstein: it's not so much important just the bother of having to re-install :\03:27
kianwhich isn't that much of a bother really just not very fun03:27
holsteintypicaly takes me about 8 minutes to install03:27
kianholstein: oh also if I remove light-locker03:27
kianit's just a screen-saver no?03:27
kianxfce4-power-manager will operate properly?03:27
holsteinkian: "properly" is probably relative03:28
kianbecause it seems like it has no say in choosing my display sleep, etc right now03:28
kianso yes?03:28
holsteinkian: i dont know, its likely relative, and actually, could be different per hardware03:28
holsteinwhen im learning a new machine and working out its linux support, i typically spend hours and hours with live iso's and different installs, seeing what works "best" and what fits my needs..03:29
CoolishPrune_holstein: connect on older kernel disconnect on new kernel03:30
holsteinCoolishPrune_: cool.. so, file a bug about your hardware and the newer kernel support for your hardware03:30
holstein!bug03:30
ubottuIf you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.03:30
kianholstein: gotcha, I just gotta bookmark my hardware stuff and I think i'll be ok in event of harddrive failure03:32
kianonly thing I'm left with now is my predicament with browsers03:33
holsteinweb browsers?03:33
holsteinwhat did you use? just use what you are used to using..03:33
kianChromium/Google Chrome HTML5 video performance is much better then Firefox however Firefox uses actual Adobe Flash Player which performs well and Chrome's is using Pepperflash which is awful on this particular desktop with live-streams and video playback.03:34
holsteinthere is no flash support for linux from adboe03:34
holsteinadobe*03:34
holsteinhttp://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/03:34
kian"Mozilla, Firefox - NPAPI (Extended Support Release)"03:34
kian?03:34
holsteinif using flash is a priority, i suggest the lastest version for chrome03:34
kianholstein: Yeah I did but Chrome's flash is Pepperflash03:35
kianthis desktop is pretty outdated so it's not holding up too well03:35
holsteinright03:35
holsteinkian: you wont magically install some browser that makes your machine faster03:35
kianholstein: i wish 😛03:35
kianwoah03:35
holsteinkian: chrome is the "best" option.. that pepper flash.. otherwise, just do what the machine can do03:36
kianmac autocorrecting to emojis03:36
kianO_o03:36
kianholstein: yeah I'll stick to Firefox I guess since Chrome's flash is unbearable with live-streams and video playback on this machine.03:36
CoolishPrune_holstein: what is the newest package i am running?03:37
holsteinanyways, you are actually *not* having a browser predicament.. thats trying to use things on the internet designed for newer hardare perdicament..03:37
holsteinCoolishPrune_: what is the newser pacakge you are running? i have no idea..03:37
kianholstein: that's a better way of saying it, yes haha03:37
kianholstein: I'm sure things would workout much better if the computer wasn't a decade old.03:37
holsteinkian: well, its just good to keep it in perspective, so you are not "frustrated" with a web browser, or linux..03:38
CoolishPrune_well in order for me to report a bug they want to know thepackage. I have the latest install of lubuntu 14.1003:38
holsteinkian: im not sure of that.. if you have a newer machine that doesnt support linux well, you can have issues as well.03:38
holstein!bug | CoolishPrune_03:38
ubottuCoolishPrune_: If you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.03:38
kianholstein: might just buy a more powerful CPU for it03:39
kianLGA775 socket03:39
holsteini wouldnt spend any $$ on a 10 year old PC..03:40
kianholstein: a cool little project maybe03:41
kiantheoretically dropping in any LGA775 would work, no?03:41
kianPickup like a used Core 2 Quad and see what happens?03:41
holsteinkian: i have no idea.. try a hardware channel. i personaly wouldnt "waste" any money on that machine.. since, hardware is so resonably priced these days03:42
kianholstein: very true03:42
holsteinits your hardware.. no one is going to stop you03:42
kianholstein: this lubuntu build was more of a test-run.03:42
kianI think I'm going to purchase a NUC to actually use03:42
holsteinnice value PC's..03:42
holsteinthose are so cheap, especially now that there is a newer gen of them, i suggest putting any money you want to spend on that PC toward a NUC or something that just ships with linux03:43
kianholstein: yes it is. I have one upstairs in my office running OS X.03:43
ianorlinalso doesn't 776 draw lots of power kian03:58
ianorlinI went to get dinner03:58
kianianorlin: yeah ultimately not worth it03:58
kianianorlin: what'd ya get03:58
ianorlinfish plate but there is #lubuntu-offtopic for that03:59
kianoh seriously there's an offtopic as well04:00
kian?04:00
ianorlinyes04:00
CoolishPruneholstein: u there04:32
holsteinyes, but, just ask, CoolishPrune , if you have a question.. a volunteer will assist, if they can04:32
holsteinno need to specificlaly call out anyone04:32
CoolishPruneHaving troubles syncing wifi04:32
holsteinsyncing?04:33
CoolishPrunebut, my cable connect works fine.04:33
holsteinyou mean, joining a wifi network?04:33
CoolishPrunewell, connecting to my router, essentially04:33
holstein!wifi04:34
ubottuWireless documentation, including how-to guides and troubleshooting information, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs04:34
holsteini will, again, just try *everything*. making sure all the parts work, with supported drivers in supported operating systems..04:34
CoolishPruneholstein: when I try sudo ip link set wlan0 up it says cannot find device wlan0 should i go back and try ndiswrapper?04:39
CoolishPruneok05:04
CoolishPruneSo I need help installing a wireless network dirver.05:04
Coolishprune_im here05:07
Coolishprune_Does encrypting the install slow down the computer much?05:20
CoolishPruneIve tried everything that I have been asked to do. Still cant get the wifi going.06:05

AndChat|54704Regarding my problem?17:55
gebjgdAndChat-54704, never seen this problem. i have 5 computers which are all running lubuntu 14.0418:53
AndChat-54704Well unfortunately I have it18:53
ianorlingebjgd: I think this is hardware dependent18:53
AndChat-54704It's a Lenovo thinkpad t40018:56
AndChat-54704The card is known to be problematic18:56
AndChat-54704But I tried the answers, but none worked for long18:56
AndChat-54704What worked for a while was disabling wireless n18:58
AndChat-54704The strange thing is, Internet was working correctly in Ubuntu 13, but stopped after upgrade to 14, and now when I install Ubuntu 13 or even 12 it has the same problem18:59
gebjgdAndChat-54704, ok, i have here thinkpad t410s19:01
AndChat-54704Is the Internet working on it?19:01
gebjgdAndChat-54704, 03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6200 (rev 35)19:02
ianorlinAndChat-54704: try a different kenrel maybe?19:02
gebjgdAndChat-54704, i am using it with lubuntu chating with you19:02
AndChat-54704I have an Intel wifilink 5100 agn19:02
AndChat-54704How do I change kernel?19:02
gebjgdAndChat-54704, or. you can buy another usb wlan card19:03
gebjgdAndChat-54704, or maybe that is the problem with your router19:03
AndChat-54704And how can I change the kernel? And which one should I use?19:03
AndChat-54704I don't think it's the router19:03
AndChat-54704Because it was working perfectly until the update19:04
gebjgdAndChat-54704, but if you switch back to the old version, will it still work?19:05
AndChat-54704No19:05
AndChat-54704And with basically any distribution19:05
gebjgdAndChat-54704, maybe it is broken19:06
AndChat-54704Fedora, Debian, Ubuntu, lubuntu, crunchbsng19:06
AndChat-54704None work19:06
gebjgdAndChat-54704, better to buy a usb wlan card19:06
AndChat-54704Ok thanks19:06
