xubuntu17wHello, I'm having problems with audio and video playback in xubuntu 14.04. I've installed and fiddled with my media players and browsers and they are all playing choppy sound and video. I followed web instructions on updating the flashplayer on chrome, chromium, and firefox. I also followed web instructions on updating restricted-content and codec lib. I cannot find anything else that describes this problem-- it is general and no00:22
xubuntu17wI would be grateful for any help, Thanks.00:24

xubuntu575hello?04:47
xubuntu575is anyone here that could help me with an audio/video playback issue?04:48
ObrienDavedepends on the issue, and you can ask in #ubuntu also04:50

xubuntu575I'm getting choppy audio and video in every program. I've added the restricted extras and also updated everything I coould find recommended. It is a general problem because it is happening in three seperate browsers chrome, firefox, and chromium. The playback is also failing in the seperate audio programs like audacious and gmusicbrowser.04:58
xubuntu575i updated flash plugins as well04:58
ObrienDavedone any memory tests lately?04:59
xubuntu575no, this was a project to recover a laptop with an improper install of windows 7 on a system designed for xp05:00

ObrienDavemay i suggest asking in #ubuntu, more people to help there05:01
cfhowlettxubuntu575, drivers ...05:02
xubuntu575how to???05:02
ObrienDaveaudio/video issues could be drivers or something common to all ubuntu flavors05:02
xubuntu575i have intel graphics chipset05:03
ObrienDavelook in the repos for mesa, i915, i965, drivers. i have intel chipset also05:04
ObrienDavemake sure you get the proper driver05:05
xubuntu575ok, is there gui access to driver info or do i use terminal?05:06
cfhowlettgiven your description of universal problems, I suspect wrong drivers for failing hardware05:07
xubuntu575yes, makes since since i updated even the codecs05:08
ObrienDaveand without knowing whether you have i915 or i965 chipset, suggesting a driver is not a good idea05:09
xubuntu575how do you access that info in the terminal?05:10
ObrienDavenot sure. lol05:12
ObrienDavei've seen it. can't remember where that info is05:13
xubuntu575im lookin for it now05:15
xubuntu575ok i'm not having much luck tonight and I am going to go get some sleep.... Thanks for the help-I will focus on finding the right drivers. I made  a note of the info and will check with the manufacturer website tommorow for the chipset. I;m sure I can get some help tomorrow. Again, Thanks05:24

melodieI am going to install xubuntu on a machine with windows 8.1 in dual boot, the machine is now ready, has the partitions and there is a detail I don't know12:25
melodieanyone here has experience with dualbooting windows 8.1 ?12:26
melodieI don't know why the Xubuntu distro does not have grub-efi installed in the iso, and if it is going to be downloaded during install?12:26
elfymmm12:27
melodiealso I don't know if in time, the updates of Windows 8.1 might reinstall it's own efi bootloader and risk to erase the one of grub12:27
melodiein this case I might better use the non free EasyBCD (not that I would be happy using it)12:27

DesertWolf29Hello! I'm having a minor aesthetic issue when I start up my computer. I have opted to use full disk encryption, and whenever I start my computer and it needs to ask for the password to unlock my drive, my monitor goes to sleep and I have to wake it up using the up arrow. Instead of the nice Xubuntu login, I get a CLI interface. Any sujustions on what I can do to get the nice login screen or do I have to just live with it. I'm 21:07
DesertWolf29The monitor in question is a Dell Monitor21:07
pmjdebruijnDesertWolf29: it might help if you made a photo of the screen when you get that CLI interface, so everybody here can see _exactly_ what you're talking about21:07
eikon81gany tips for optimizing youtube and web video playback? I have the flashplayer plugin installed and I'm using the nvidia drivers for my machine in firefox btw21:08

eikon81glooks like plugin-container pops up and takes up like 70 - 80%21:15
eikon81git's default like 480p21:15
pmjdebruijneikon81g: and if you download a video like big buck bunny at a similar resolution, and play it back locally (outside the browser) does it go wlel then?21:15
pmjdebruijneikon81g: youtube shows you exactly what it is21:16
eikon81gAuto:480p playback and samething.. let me rip a video and playback 1 sec21:17
pmjdebruijneikon81g: btw, the container in top means flash is being used21:18
pmjdebruijneikon81g: try enabling html5 playback for youtube using that link I gave you21:18
eikon81gI thought that may have been it21:18
eikon81gok cool ty21:19
DesertWolf29Back. I have the image, can one even upload an image to ubuntu pastebin? I've never done that before or am I allowed to use an image paste site?21:21
eikon81gok so the video that I d/l is using parole to playback and it's using like 20%21:22
eikon81gwell 15 to 20%21:22

eikon81gOn the downloaded videos yes it's fince21:27
eikon81g*fine21:27
pmjdebruijneikon81g: and with html5 video?21:27
eikon81git's actually cleaner and firefox doens't really go up too much on the usage %21:30
eikon81gnice.21:30

eikon81gI had some issues with resolution settings in grub.. I had to make an edit to get the splash screen back..21:36
DesertWolf29Ok no worries its strange and just sets off my OCD i'll look into the grub settings21:36
DesertWolf29Xubuntu is the only distro that does this21:37
eikon81gjust a possibility I may be off.. but when my resolution settings were janky it would give me a text based prompt as well21:37
eikon81gI missed my splash screen too so I ran down a fix lol21:37
DesertWolf29hmm ok ill look into it and yay im not alone :D21:38
eikon81gthere's a way to see what resolutions will work properly with your machine and then you edit the grub conf to match what will work21:38
eikon81git had to do with installing the nvidia drivers. .21:39
eikon81gcan't really hurt to see if it helps21:39
eikon81g1 sec21:39
DesertWolf29hmmm i dont use nvidia. its a fairly older machine and i stick with the open source drivers since its an older AMD card.21:40
eikon81gyea, I shoulda done the same but since I fixed that I haven't ran into any issues.. .21:40
eikon81gpmjdebruijn, said he stays away from nvidia all together, can't blame him21:41
eikon81ghttp://www.binarytides.com/ubuntu-fix-nvidia-graphics/21:41
eikon81gthat may get you going in the right direction for making edits to the conf21:41
pmjdebruijngenerally binary blobs tend to have weird breakages at times21:42
pmjdebruijnif your luckily you might not experience one for years21:42
pmjdebruijnbut not everybody is so lucky21:42
DesertWolf29ok cool ive messed around with grub before in arch so ill look into it :) if thats not it ill try the forums or come back21:42
eikon81ggood luck :)21:43
eikon81gI really hope I don't LOL21:43
eikon81gI was looking at elementaryOS have you played with it before?21:43
eikon81glike I said I am really new to Linux, I've been working on computers for a long time but of course all my customers were Windows users..21:44
DesertWolf29yes i have it was an interesting experince. probably not as interesting as gentoo but i digress... and I know the feeling I hate windows21:44
eikon81glol21:45
pmjdebruijnbtw, generally it's best to keep with the big distros21:47
pmjdebruijnsmaller distro's like elementary tend to risk and fall fast21:47
pmjdebruijnsustaining a level of quality is pretty challenging21:47
eikon81ggotcha. Ubuntu is awesome and the support is great too.. I generally head straight here but I've never been just in the cold which is a nice feeling21:48
eikon81gI was so impressed with the installation and how well all the hardware works with little to no driver issuse (so far)21:48
eikon81gvery cool21:48
* pmjdebruijn distro-hopped for 2-3 years ... and then there was ubuntu21:49
RudeVipercan anyone tell me how to get the os to give me a choice of which Desktop Environment I can use on boot? it's defaulted to xfce right now but doesn't give me a choice and I have two others installed that I want to choose from.21:50
DesertWolf29What OS are you running RudeViper?21:51
RudeViperXubuntu 14.0421:51
RudeViperoriginally it was set to autologin and xfce was the only DE on here - having some issues and I need to see if it is xfce or ubuntu causing the trouble21:52
eikon81gI saw this..21:53
eikon81ghttp://askubuntu.com/questions/416825/how-to-quick-switch-between-desktop-environments-in-the-running-desktop-session21:53
eikon81glooks like it may be up your alley..21:53
eikon81ga second user account with the other DE may work..? Idk21:55
eikon81gsorry :\21:55
DesertWolf29Hmm you usually select what DE you want when you log from the Display manager. The Display manager is the program that handles that are you still set to log in automatically?21:57
eikon81gyea, I was looking more it says you should be able to select a session..21:58
eikon81ghttp://www.howtogeek.com/193129/how-to-install-and-use-another-desktop-environment-on-linux/21:58
DesertWolf29If I'm not mistaken Xubuntu uses Light DM now and there is a button on the login screen to select which one you want if you have others installed21:59
eikon81gthat's right21:59
eikon81gonce you take the auto login off in the users and groups settings then you should be prompted to choose a user and have the ability to select the session you want22:00
RudeViperbut the button is not there on my screen22:00
DesertWolf29hmmm let me check brb22:01
eikon81gwell if you login in and then log out it should be22:01
eikon81gmaybe..?22:01
eikon81gso let it actually load up and then log out, is it there?22:01
RudeViperI will try again - but it didn't a few minutes ago - be right back either way22:02
eikon81gthe only other thing is if the environment didn't install correctly..22:03
eikon81gany luck?22:04
eikon81gI read this: On Ubuntu’s default login screen — known as a display manager — this menu can be accessed by clicking an icon next to your user name. The icon only appears if multiple desktop environments are available. On other display managers, you may need to click a “Session” menu or a similar icon. You’ll find the option somewhere on the screen.22:04
DesertWolf29Ok found it its the little mouse icon up in the top right hand corner22:04
eikon81gk cool22:04
DesertWolf29Is he still on lol22:04
eikon81gthere he is..22:04
eikon81gWhoops22:04
eikon81gRudeViper, - On Ubuntu’s default login screen — known as a display manager — this menu can be accessed by clicking an icon next to your user name. The icon only appears if multiple desktop environments are available. On other display managers, you may need to click a “Session” menu or a similar icon. You’ll find the option somewhere on the screen.22:04
eikon81gThere's a chance the other DE didn't install properly and that may be why it's not present22:05
RudeViperok I'll go to software center this time instead of using cli22:05
eikon81gyea, maybe something was missed.. ?22:06
DesertWolf29Its the little mouse icon in the upper right hand corner on xubuntu and it will let you select what session you want. If you dont see them there it probably didn't install propaply like eikon81g said22:06
* eikon81g is away: brb22:07
RudeViperok uninstalled them in software center and now reinstalling them22:10
eikon81gI had some issues when I installe xfce over ubuntu hopefully you don't run into any snags.. my hardkeys for my volume went awol22:11
eikon81gI tried to run it down for a day and said screw it and went to the clean xfce install22:11
Enkidu_akHi. I'm using cairo-dock 3.4.0 with utopic. I can't get cairo to lock my screen. I've verified that xscreensaver-command -lock does in fact work and have even gone so far as to replace the content of lock-screen.sh with xscreensaver-command -lock. The lock menu option still does nothing. There is no output when the option is clicked after running the dock from terminal.22:12
Enkidu_akI know that this isn't strictly an ubuntu or Xfce issue, but cairo seems ubiquitous among xfce users (from anecdotal evidence)22:13
Unit193Enkidu_ak: Generally speaking, light-locker is what's used in Xubuntu.  Are you sure that xscreensaver is the daemon used?  And, you could perhaps just use xflock as the lock script?22:14
* eikon81g is back (gone 00:10:34)22:17
Enkidu_akUnit193, I reverted back to xscreensaver for this machine because light-locker seems to halt the session and running processes attached to it. In my case this behavior is undesirable. xflock works from term, but so does xscreensaver and even light-locker when I enable it. The issue seems to be cairo rather than whichever utility I use to lock the session.22:17
Enkidu_akUnit193, Or if it is the lock utility, then I can't reproduce it from term.22:18
RudeViperwell that didn't work either - ugh - how do I kill the DE altoget so I can get to command prompt - I'm going to strip xfce out and see if that will work22:20
melodieI am meeting with a power management issue in Xubuntu 14.04.2 just installed and I don't know what to do about it. I have already gone through all the options in the gui meant to configure it and it still goes to deep sleep after a while without being invited to do so. And I am forced to reboot it, which is quite unpleasant22:21
melodieany idea what I could try or look into?22:21
Enkidu_akmelodie, The system goes to sleep or the monitor goes dark?22:21
melodieEnkidu_ak it's dark and when I press the Control key nothing happens22:22
Enkidu_akmelodie, Are you still able to ssh in?22:22
melodieif I just start touching the power button, very lightly, it briefly lightens and goes back to dark right away22:22
Unit193Enkidu_ak: Ah, alright, I see.  Never used cairo, so can't help with that portion of it and that's looking to be where the issue is. :/22:23
melodieEnkidu_ak I'm going to try wait a sec22:23
Enkidu_akUnit193, Thanks for the attempt at least. I'm stumped already, so I'm certainly not any worse off.22:23
Unit193Enkidu_ak: Best I can say, try to have the lock script write to a file or so to see if it's even triggered.22:24
melodieEnkidu_ak I'm logged it, now just have to wait for it to do it's thing22:24
melodieit/in22:24
Unit193Might even be something in the ~/.cache/upstart/startxfce4 log too.22:24
Enkidu_akUnit193, Actually, that's an excellent idea. As I said, I replaced the content of the lock script with just the lock command, but that doesn't mean that it isn't being called and is just not operating due to interference from cairo22:25
Enkidu_akmelodie, While you are waiting, let's cover the basics. Have you gone in to the xfce PM settings and disabled power management?22:26
melodieI think I did22:28
melodieI have been into the different tabs and sections of the power management, the battery part and the home power supply part22:29
melodieyou mean the gui configured as user, right?22:29
Enkidu_akYes22:29
melodieinformation, the machine is a laptop HP 250 g3, it's dual-booting with Windows 8.122:30
Enkidu_akmelodie, Specifically the system and display tabs22:30
melodiewhat else should I say?22:30
melodieI re check22:30
melodiewhat is the name of that program in English?22:30
Enkidu_akmelodie, Well, there isn't much else to say yet. At least, not that I can think of. First we have to confirm that the machine is actually going to sleep rather than simply shutting down the display.22:31
melodieI could start it from console with "LANG=C"22:31
melodieso I'm sure we are talking of the same thing22:31
Enkidu_akxfce4-power-manager-settings22:31
Enkidu_akHowever, since it is a laptop that sort of makes dpms more unlikely. Still, it could be a display issue.22:33
eikon81gsee yall later I am heading out..22:34
eikon81ggood luck22:34
eikon81g:)22:34
melodieEnkidu_ak thanks22:34
melodieEnkidu_ak perhaps found:22:37
melodieshould I untick: "Monitor power management control" ? in the General tab?22:37
Enkidu_akmelodie, I would. It seems that you are trying to take xfce out of the power management business all together, so I would disable monitor PM as well.22:38
melodiewill the notification about the battery state still work after?22:40
melodiejust for my information22:40
Enkidu_akBattery monitoring is a different animal from what I understand. Disabling PM should not disable monitoring.22:43
Enkidu_akmelodie, Specifically the battery is monitored by sensors that really don't have anything to do with software PM22:44
melodieok thank you very much. I'll tell you in a moment if that setup holds22:44
melodieok22:44
melodielet's say about 15 minutes22:44
Enkidu_akI'll be here :)22:44
melodieif it holds that long without interference it should be good to go22:45
melodiehowever I'll unlog from ssh22:45
melodiethat could interfere22:45
melodieas a second user, and some eventual system policy preventing a machine to go out while there is another user connected? (no idea how this part of the setup is)22:46
Enkidu_akmelodie, It shouldn't. the manager shouldn't know anything about other sessions as it is running with your permissions.22:46
melodieok22:47
melodieI have logged out from ssh anyway22:47
Enkidu_akmelodie, From the perspective of the manager, there are already a dozen other users logged in22:47
Enkidu_akmelodie, Ok. It doesn't hurt to be cautious22:47
melodieright :)22:47
melodiethere are people switching to Linux who live a bad experience, when I provide it to someone I try to make it a perfect experience22:48
melodieand this user already has a Linux box since several years (which i had installed for him) and this machine is new, he just bought it, and we opened the box together.22:49
melodieand I have needed help from several people since a few days as W 8.1 with GPT/UEFI was a total discovery for me.22:49
melodieneeded and used :)22:50
=== OrioaZzZ is now known as Orioa
melodieEnkidu_ak the screen has gone black now22:56
melodieI am logged in with ssh22:56
melodieso only the screen has gone black22:56
melodieEnkidu_ak what do you suggest I do?22:56
Enkidu_akWhat happens when you hit control/move the mouse/etc22:56
melodienothing happes22:57
melodie+n22:57
Enkidu_akmelodie, In your ssh term, I want you to try: xset dpms force off22:58
melodieI don't know what syslog says:22:58
melodiehttp://pastebin.fr/3915422:58
melodieok22:58
melodiexset:  unable to open display ""22:59
Enkidu_akThat might require you to define a display, but I don't think so.22:59
melodiesomething else?22:59
Enkidu_akOk, try: DISPLAY=:0 xset dpms force off22:59
Enkidu_akmelodie, Did that turn the display back on?23:00
melodieI try23:00
melodiedoesn't move23:01
Enkidu_akI'm not sure what else could be causing the monitor to sleep.23:03
melodiewhat is  rtkit-daemon ?23:04
Enkidu_akIt's a daemon that manages some dbus apps and services23:05
melodieany idea what types of apps and services?23:06
Enkidu_akmelodie, The long version is that it allows users to give apps higher processor priority without having to expose privileged sections of the kernel to userspace. I guess that covers all apps that use dbus.23:08
Enkidu_akrtkit stands for Realtime kit, refering to processor scheduling. It's not root kit :)23:10
Enkidu_akmelodie, As to your display issue, check ps and see if light-locker is running23:10
melodieok23:11
melodieit does:23:11
melodie$ ps ax | grep light-locker23:11
melodie 1742 ?        Sl     0:00 light-locker23:11
melodie 2875 pts/16   S+     0:00 grep --color=auto light-locker23:11
melodiewhat if I remove it?23:11
melodieapt-get remove --purge?23:11
melodiecould it be causing this?23:12
Enkidu_akmelodie, I don't know if it's causing this or not. I suspect that dpms is involved. I think, and let me be clear that this is purely speculation, that light-locker might not be dealing with dpms correctly and it might actually be because PM is disabled in the settings manager. I would reboot first, so that you have access to X again and then we can do some more testing before we start removing packages.23:15
melodieEnkidu_ak ok lets to it :)23:16
melodienice thing the reboot can be done from within the ssh23:17
Enkidu_akI've found an old bug report that might relate to this, to light-locker, dpms and xfpm23:18
Enkidu_akGive me a moment to see if it's related.23:18
melodieEnkidu_ak ok rebooted and logged in X23:21
melodieEnkidu_ak ok, I think I have heard about light-locker and some bugs but I don't know what23:22
Enkidu_akAlright. To start, let's disable dpms again. Open up your favorite terminal and type xset -dpms23:22
Enkidu_akThen confirm it with xset -q | grep DPMS23:23
melodiein the machine or from ssh?23:23
Enkidu_akFrom a terminal opened at the machine itself. You can do it from ssh, but you have to define the display again if you do23:23
melodieit says:23:24
melodieDPMS (Energy Star):23:25
melodie   DPMS is Disabled23:25
melodieEnkidu_ak what comes next?23:25
Enkidu_akGood. We should also turn off screensaver blanking. I don't know if light-locker uses that setting, but I also don't know why your screen is still going dark. So, to be sure, type: xset s off23:26
melodieok23:26
melodiedone23:26
melodienow that it is done in the console it should not leave the screen right?23:27
melodiethen if it's correct, there is something to be done to make it last23:27
Enkidu_akActually, I'm curious about the timing. Under settings, open up light-locker-settings and screensaver settings, please23:28
melodieok23:29
melodieI was having a look here http://xubuntu.org/news/screen-locking-in-xubuntu-14-04/23:29
melodieI see the enable button, I'll put it off23:30
melodieand press apply, even though it was written "never"23:31
melodieI'd suppose that's it?23:31
melodiehopefully23:32
Enkidu_akI guess we'll see.23:32
melodieok23:32
Enkidu_akThat link you provided seems to reference the exact problem that you are having23:32
melodieI'll get some hot beverage in the meanwhile23:32
melodieunder "known issues" right?23:32
melodiethe explanation of this guy is out of my reach: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfce4-power-manager/+bug/125933923:34
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1303736 in xubuntu-default-settings (Ubuntu) "duplicate for #1259339 [SRU] Black screen after wakeup from suspending by closing the laptop lid" [High,Fix released]23:34
Enkidu_akYes. Unfortunately they talk about workarounds after the fact and not solutions. I think that disabling light-locker is probably the best option in this case.23:34
=== Orioa is now known as OrioaZzZ
melodieEnkidu_ak a better one, remove it completely, and if the guy wants a screensave I'll install the gnome screensaver with all depends23:35
melodieinstead of going to the edge of a machine's resources I always target much lower needs so the machine has lots of resources left23:35
melodiein this case it's a Celeron (not that good but new) 64bits and 4 GB ram23:36
melodieplenty space too 200 GB just for Xubuntu23:36
melodieif this is the only origin for the issue23:37
Enkidu_akThat is an option. I use xscreensaver myself. gnome-screensaver has the advantage of using dbus.23:37
melodieI think my user has simple needs, he uses the machine and when done he shuts down. he is a very straightforward kind of user23:37
melodieEnkidu_ak then what do you like with dbus?23:38
melodieremote control? else?23:38
Enkidu_akThe solution that was referenced in the bug report was the same one in your previous link. They manually run xrandr to restore screen power. It's not optimal, but at least it gets you back in to your session without having to close it.23:38
Enkidu_akmelodie, Lots of other applications use dbus. It is a standardized method of inter-app communication. I like having the option even if I don't have any specific use for it at the moment. I think that my problems with cairo-dock not locking my screen are related to the fact that xscreensaver doesn't use dbus, actually.23:39
Enkidu_akmelodie, So, yes, remote control is one use, but also any other scenario where you might imagine some other system app needing to know the state of the screensaver.23:40
Arrickhey all, I am trying to get my max resolution onto the hp z200 sff I just put xubuntu on, and it has an intel vga card capable of 1680x1050... Howver, the max resolution showing up is 1024x768.. I ran gtf 1680 1050 60.00 and I get the following line23:41
Arrick  # 1680x1050 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 65.22 kHz; pclk: 147.14 MHz23:41
Arrick  Modeline "1680x1050_60.00"  147.14  1680 1784 1968 2256  1050 1051 1054 1087  -HSync +Vsync23:41
Arrickso... I ran xrandr  --newmode "1680x1050_60.00"  147.14  1680 1784 1968 2256  1050 1051 1054 1087  -HSync +Vsync and it gives me an error saying X Error of failed request:  BadName (named color or font does not exist)23:42
Arrickany ideas?23:42
melodieEnkidu_ak xrandr from a ssh is not an option, my user is just a user, nothing else23:42
ArrickI was able to get it to go to the resolution in ubuntu, but couldnt get it to stick.23:43
Enkidu_akmelodie, You have to set the display variable. DISPLAY=:0 xrandr --auto23:43
melodieEnkidu_ak in Bento there is no screensaver at all and I have never had a user complaining about it23:43
melodieif they want one they install the one they want23:43
melodieI have not been able to create recent Bento LTS, and I don't know if I could provide it with the efi stuff23:44
Enkidu_akmelodie, Screensavers aren't really necessary, I'm just a creature of habit and I like the pretty pictures.23:44
melodieI don't think so, I think it's in the Ubuntu official build mechanics23:44
melodieEnkidu_ak there are options with feh to provide random screens23:44
melodie:)23:44
Enkidu_akmelodie, And I use them :D23:45
melodie:D23:45
melodieI use only the random for i23:45
melodie1 session23:45
melodienot changing all the time23:45
melodie9 minutes the screen is still on23:46
melodiewhen are they going to fix that bug?23:46
Enkidu_akmelodie, Mainly I wanted the ability to lock my session without killing my audio output. That's not possible with light-locker23:46
melodieok23:46
melodieso xscreensaver does it fine?23:46
Enkidu_akmelodie, I don't know. First they have to identify what the problem is. It might not actually be a problem with light-locker, just a problem with X that light-locker revealed.23:47
melodieI just use "xlock" in my console (when my son is around, he's a tricky one)23:47
melodiebut X is going to be replaced by Wayland so day? no?23:47
=== arrick is now known as Arrick
Enkidu_akmelodie, It might. There is a lot of inertia in the community to overcome before that becomes widespread.23:49
melodiesome wayland packages started to fall into my Archlinux (is my usual distro)23:50
melodiewhich probably means it's on it's way23:50
melodieland :D23:50
Enkidu_akmelodie, The switch from xfree86 to Xorg was contentious and the vitriol surrounding the licensing change for xfree was nearly universal23:50
melodieEnkidu_ak I was not around so I didn't mind :)23:51
Enkidu_akmelodie, Arch is always on the bleeding edge. Ubuntu almost never is23:51
melodieno it's not bleeding23:51
melodieonly the latest stable programs turned into packages23:51
melodieI had some issues a few years ago, but since then almost never23:51
melodieand most often very fast to fix23:52
melodiejust it's not for my users23:52
melodiethey need as easy as possible23:52
Enkidu_akmelodie, Ubuntu is definitely the progeny of Debian, steady and stable. Though Ubuntu is wreckless compared to Wheezy23:52
melodieso for them I choose Xubuntu, or Lubuntu, or Bento, or antiX (now the MX 14.3)23:52
melodieUbuntu has funds and Ubuntu has a different life cycle23:53
melodieUbuntu takes from Debian and gives back valuable things too23:53
melodielately (2 years ago) I found Debian (stable and testing) had super ugly fonts in a machine with a low quality grahic card.23:54
melodieI have been tought to use some packages from Ubuntu to fix it and add a few configuration files.23:54
melodiethat did the trick.23:54
Enkidu_akmelodie, I don't disagree. I wasn't disparaging either, just pointing out the hierarchy of technological progression23:54
melodielately the same happened with antiX (which uses Debian parts mainly) I grabbed the same fonts and did configuration files again and hop fixed!23:55
melodieI need to check "wreckless" in a translator23:55
melodiewait a sec23:55
Enkidu_akI meant reckless23:56
Enkidu_akBut my mind formed "wreck" and my finders didn't check it23:56
Enkidu_akfingers*23:56
melodieoh23:57
Enkidu_akhomophones and I have a long and troubled history :)23:57
melodieok got it23:57
melodiebut Ubuntu has the LTS versions23:57
melodieand after 3 to 6 months after their come out, they are very safe to use and stable23:58
Enkidu_akIt does and it is. I just meant that, compared to wheezy, even the LTS seems quite radical.23:58
Enkidu_akArch is probably a couple of orders of magnitude beyond that23:59
