Desez2tPunkDoes anyone have a nice non-boring guide/tutorial on getting into Ubuntu and learning more about Linux?00:26
happyfr0ggYuken - McDonald's has free WiFi but if you want unfiltered access to the Internet TOR is the way to go.00:28
Enkidu_akDesez2tPunk, Define non-boring? It's easier to focus on a specific need and work from there. Was there something specific that you wanted to do? MythTV setup, various multimedia manipulation and productions, LAMP servers?00:28
bazhang!manual | Desez2tPunk00:28
ubottuDesez2tPunk: The Ubuntu Manual will help you become familiar with everyday tasks such as surfing the web, listening to music and scanning documents. With an emphasis on easy to follow instructions, it is suitable for all levels of experience. http://ubuntu-manual.org/00:28

Yukenhappyfr0gg: TOR, the website and proxies, have been blocked. And, I can't manually change my proxy, dns, etc, either00:30
Desez2tPunkEnkidu_ak, I would like to start learning most of the terminal commands, for instance, I suppose you could say become "fluent" in using the terminal and knowing more about the outputs of info commands that I use. Non-boring as in not just a list but a tutorial or guide that eases you into learning it instead of drilling a list into your mind.00:30
Desez2tPunkThanks for the response ubottu, will be sure to look at it00:30
happyfr0ggYuken, too bad I am not with you or else I would have pwned their PC and helped you out. I have pwned a few library PCs in my day. Some of them are set up by noob network sys admins.00:32
Enkidu_akDesez2tPunk, Again, need is really the key here. Just keep using it and eventually you will want to do something that you don't know how to do. If you are looking for a goal until you find some of your own interests, you can always pursue Linux From Scratch. You will learn more about terminal than you could ever wish for.00:32
Desez2tPunkEnkidu_ak, So then how would you suggest pursuing Linux from scratch?00:33
Enkidu_akDesez2tPunk, http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/ is a good place to start00:33

Desez2tPunkHmmm... Thanks for the responses Enkidu_ak and rypervenche we'll see where it leads :D00:35

The only way to force it to is if I manually set the OC to the max multiplier and that makes it thermal throttle02:45
lasdam1it's an acer aspire 3830t, i5 cpu, 8gb ram, 500gb ssd, should be latest ubuntu version, and i64 architecture02:46
Latrodectuslasdam1, have you tried a fresh install? (reinstalling)02:47
lasdam1no, it's not that much of an emergency yet.. I'm pretty sure it would work, but I think it's way too early for that; re-installing is a pain too, not the installation process, but getting everything else installed, like all kind of tweaks, driver fixes, all of the additional software, backing up everything when I pretty much have my files kinda scattered, etc02:50
lasdam1it usually take me like a week to get everything installed and working again after a fresh install02:51
lasdam1I'm just pretty much a linux newb or so I consider myself, so I expected there to be more solutions/ideas to be tried out :S02:52
Latrodectuslasdam1, look at your log files02:54

lasdam1yeah, I checked out Xconf.log.old, and I tried looking through it, but nothing immediately stuck out to me, but it's also a relatively large log file02:56

Enkidu_akKian, are you still around?03:56

Enkidu_akThe problem is light-locker and possibly the screensaver blanking timer.03:57
kianEnkidu_ak: Light-locker was uninstalled03:57
kianEnkidu_ak: performed apt-get purge light-locker03:57

kianEnkidu_ak: I believe I tried umm03:58
kianxset s 0 003:58
Enkidu_akYou might also need to supply xset -dpms03:58
kianEnkidu_ak: okay I'll have to give that a try tomorrow03:59
Enkidu_akAnd of course make sure that you have unticked the box in xfpm that lets it manage power for the display, though you have probably already done that.03:59
kianEnkidu_ak: I have not done that, please elaborate03:59
kianEnkidu_ak: also is xset s 0 0 and xset off the same?04:00

Latrodectuslubuntu is great, but it can be buggy as shit when it wants to...04:04
Amm0njust try to install again via apt04:04
Enkidu_akkian, Well, really we should limit the changes to one thing at a time to isolate the problem, but you can.04:04
Amm0nxset settings don't survive a reboot04:05
kianAmm0n: "xfce4-power-manager is already the newest version."04:05
Enkidu_akThey don't, but you can make them a permanent part of your X conf once you identify the issue.04:05
Enkidu_akIf unticking those boxes works then you shouldn't have to worry about xset04:06
kianxset -dpms and the checkbox in xfce4-power-manager perform the same task, no?04:06
kianEnkidu_ak: there was only 1 box I unchecked04:06

Enkidu_akThat way you don't have to set it manually each time, but you don't have it carrying over on the next major update04:16

zetheroois adding a user to the sudoers group the same as giving them root access?08:14
ikoniazetheroo: no08:15
ikoniazetheroo: it is giving the user privileges to run approved commands as root08:15
ikoniain ubuntu's case all commands08:15
ikoniathat is still different than being the root user08:15
zetherooikonia: so in Ubuntu adding the user to the sudoers file is giving them less power than the root user has?08:18
ikoniait depends on your definition of power08:18
ikoniazetheroo: what is the actual problem/issue, as context may help08:18
zetheroook sorry - we would like to reserve root access to only the IT admins, but give users the ability to use sudo to perform some tasks, such as install/remove packages and edit apache configs etc ...08:19
zetherooif I add the user to the sudoers file as such "userbob    ALL=(ALL:ALL) ALL" is that more or less making userbob like root?08:20
ikoniazetheroo: ok, so  you need 2 different groups, you need to leave the sudo group for your admins, and then create a second group with a defined set of commands08:21
ikoniazetheroo: with respect, if you don't know this level of basics of sudo - you really should consider not being in the sudo group yourself08:21
ikoniaand ask the other it admins who may have more experience than you08:21
zetherooI only access using root ..08:21
ikoniaas a bad sudo rule can either leave your box wide open (as your suggestion would have) or leave it unused08:21
ikoniazetheroo: then who / what are the "it admins" you want to give sudo access to ?08:22
ikoniazetheroo: the sudo group will give the user the ability to run any command as a privileged (root) user08:22
ikoniathat doesn't strike me as something you want in this case08:22
zetheroowe are two IT admins - we both access with root - then there are the users who "administer" the VM's/CT's ... they need the ability to install/remove packages and edit configs08:23
ikoniazetheroo: ok so you are not the only user with root access08:23
=== UsEr01 is now known as Guest9348
ikoniazetheroo: have you talked to the other guy about how to manage the groups/elevated permisisions08:23

bojani want to mount /proc to /opt/ltsp/amd64/proc permanently....Can anybody help me??08:24
zetherooikonia: he is a Windows guy more than anything :)08:24
ikoniabojan: a bind mount08:24
ikoniazetheroo: so you need to created a seperate admin group, and maybe even command alias group (depending on how many commands the others will need)08:24
bojanikonia:i cant understand can u pls tell me bit clearly08:25
ikoniathen define that in the sudoers file08:25
ikoniabojan: research "bind mount" or "mount -o bind"08:25
zetheroook, apart from limiting commands is it also possible to limit where they can use those commands?08:25
bojanIf i do mount -o bind will it be mount permanently??08:25
ikoniazetheroo: what do you mean where ? hosts or directories ?08:26
zetheroodirectories08:26
ikoniabojan: that will mount it for that session, you need to edit /etc/fstab to make it perm08:26
ikoniazetheroo: that doesn't really make sense08:26
ikoniazetheroo: as you can execte anything from anywhere if you know the path08:26
loshhi, does anyone know if ubuntu provides a netboot which contains the mdraid grub2 modules?08:26
ikoniazetheroo: can you give me an example of what/why you'd want that08:26
zetherooikonia: ok I see ...08:27
zetheroowe say I want to let them edit a config in /etc/apache2 but not anywhere else in /08:27
ikoniazetheroo: ok so thats not running a command, thats a target08:27
ikoniazetheroo: and yes, you can do that08:27
zetheroook, so specifying a target ...08:28
ikoniaI suspect (and this is only a guess from what you are saying) you'll be better setting up a command alias group listing all the commands including targets you expect these guys to need, makg a group say "cfgman" add those users to that group and bind that group to the command alias group in the sudoers file08:28

k1lpeter100: in general: dont log into your desktop as root.11:10
peter100that;s why i am asking how do i run an app as non root?11:10
peter100any commands?11:11

peter100suppose i logged in as root , but want to run an app as non root11:11
k1lpeter100: log out of root desktop and run the desktop as a regular user11:11
peter100how do i do that11:11
peter100?11:11
ikoniayou shouldn't be logged in as root11:11
crane_lotuspsychje:  stuff works11:11
crane_:D11:11
ikoniait's that simple11:11
peter100but still there must be some way11:11
peter100u know what i mean11:12
ikoniaI do11:12
ikoniaand the correct answer is to do it properly11:12
ikoniawhich is to not login as root11:12
k1lpeter100: running a desktop as root on ubuntu is a security issue, bad design and will lead to more issues with ther programs and file permissions11:12
peter100like some command?11:12
ikoniathe correct command is "logout" then you can login as a non-privileged user11:12
peter100i see k1l11:12
k1lpeter100: you ask "how can i shoot my own head" and we just tell you not to do that.11:12
ikoniayou are supposed to elevate up, not elevate down11:12

DJJeffbut they are pen testing distros11:13
k1lDJJeff: and that is bad design. they are not meant to be regular usage desktops11:13
DJJeffno11:13
peter100he is right a lot of distros run as root11:14
ikoniano they don't11:14
peter100take kali and puppy linux for example11:14
k1lpeter100: this is #ubuntu and if you run ubuntu that is just plain false usage11:15
peter100puppy linux runs completely as root11:15
peter100i see11:15
ikoniapeter100: puppy is a flawed design and kalli is running as root for a specific security test data11:15
Enkidu_akA lot of distros? I've only ever heard of one, Linspire.11:15
ikoniayou're using ubuntu11:15
brollypopdamn i read that as poppy lux11:15
peter100linspire?11:15
peter100i have heard backtrack also runs as root11:16
peter100don;t know11:16
Enkidu_akpeter100, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linspire11:16
Enkidu_akpeter100, You didn't miss much11:16

ikoniapeter100: back track is dead11:16

peter100also what does command "DMESG" do?11:19
k1lpeter100: so log out of the root desktop and come back to the ubuntu way which means loggin in as a user11:19
peter100k1l will do11:19
IceBot3000I agree with peter100, it's fine to run as root if you're competent. Ubuntu mandates sudo because it's for beginners11:19

Craigwelleasy teward. A little levity never hurts.14:11
thetejuCraigwell : Nope It doesn't tell me.. Okay last question,, when it comes to install Grub,, it should go to /dev/sda ,, am I correct?14:12
thetejuCraigwell : I mean , boot loader... install14:12
Craigwellbrycetd19m: Can you boot into a thumb drive? I'd boot ubuntu off a thumdrive and then check that hard drive - or do a memcheck either via bios or ubuntu boot14:12
Craigwelltheteju: correct14:13
brycetd19mWindows 7 8 windows 10 beta no issues. Cpu won't clock over 400mhz in ubuntu and ubuntu only sees 256mb of 8gb ram. My point is AFAIK this is a code issue. The cpu doesn't step up the clock as the Os doesn't tell it to.. Tried different drives my Nas runs ubuntu 14.04 tried the drive from  it as well as doing a clean install on 3 different hdds and two ssds14:13
hydehi. I want to load a kernel module (softdog) at early stages of boot, before ethernet drivers for example. Now I am adding it to /etc/modules, and loads quite late, much later than I want. I've already added it to /etc/initramfs-tools/modules too.14:14
Craigwelltheteju: sda = your hard drive. sdb, sdx etc would be additional drives. sda is the only place for it to go.14:14
hydeSo, what is correct way to get a kernel module to load as early as possible during boot?14:14
mzazaWhy do battery on my Sony VAIO lasts less while using Ubuntu around 2 hours, while on Windows it lasts up to 5 hours? Is that normal?14:14
Craigwellbrycetd19m: Ok, it sounds like the stock ubuntu doesn't have all the drivers to match your hardware. You might need to dig out drivers.. What's your hardware, homebrew ?14:15
BLZbubbaon ubuntu, how do you kill a zombie process owned by init ?14:15
thetejuCraigwell : I knew that,, what confused me is /dev/sda2 which is flagged as boot partition14:15
CptRageToastermzaza: Long story short, Ubuntu doesn't make use of a lot of battery saving features on your Processor and GPU...14:16
Craigwellmzaza: unfortunately, yes - to a point. Try googling ubuntu battery life and check out some of the things you can do to help.14:16
mzazaCraigwell: CptRageToaster: Thanks14:16
Craigwellnp14:16
CptRageToasterYa... there's a lot you can do14:16
k1lmzaza: talk to sony to support linux better. espacially the vaio stuff is closed source and not supported that well.14:16
hydeBLZbubba: zombie process is already killed. just wait for init to collect it...14:16
CptRageToasterbut it's hardware specific14:16
BLZbubbahyde: i've been waiting for about 12 hours14:16
hydeBLZbubba: if init does not wait on it to make it disappear, then that sounds like a bug somewhere...14:17
CptRageToaster^14:17
hydeBLZbubba:  parent of the zombie process is really 1?14:17
BLZbubbayes14:17
mzazak1l: Well Vaio is dead now, at least for Sony.14:17
BLZbubbait wouldn't surprise me if Upstart was brain dead about this too14:17
Craigwellahh. I don't have vaio experience. My machines are either all Dell D6xx based, or E6xxx . I have the odd broadcom wireless issue, but nothing serious. Battery life generally matches win 714:17
BLZbubbaupstart == biggest linux disaster ever14:17
mzazaCraigwell: Another thing, I tried installing Unity 8 just to check it out and after I uninstalled it I keep on getting System errors. Any ideas?14:19
Craigwelltheteju: Actually, yes that is odd. I don't know what to make of that fat32 partition. Pretty small. Was that a corporate machined managed by an IT dept somewhere? Almost makes me think someone had another bootloader on there for multiple windows installs?14:19
k1lBLZbubba: please stop that in here14:19
Craigwelltheteju: but not on separate partitions. I don't know what else to make of that either, sorry14:20
Craigwellmzaza: you might have to do a clean install to get rid of that. Sounds like some things are still flagged to start on boot that are no longer installed. relatively minor, but annoying for sure14:20
thetejuCraigwell : I understand,  probably HP trying to make it for recovery purpose14:20
BLZbubbak1l: stop what?14:21
CptRageToasteryeah, they do that14:21
brycetd19mThank you craigwell someone finily agrees. So here goes core i5 4460 8gb ddr3 1600 (samsung dimms) gtx750 2gb asrock h81m dgs r2.0 Logitech m150 wireless keyboard and mouse14:21
Craigwelltheteju: well yes, some of that is for sure - but there are still more partitions there than what make sense to me14:21
k1lBLZbubba: your sensless rantings.14:21
CptRageToasterBLZbubba: Ask questions, and you'll get support... throw useless comaplaints/opinions, you'll get kicked14:21
thetejuCraigwell: so in case of recovery the system will boot from /dev/sda5 ,, but that way they wasted some of my hard drive space,, I believe !!!14:21
mzazaCraigwell: Clean install is not possible for me at the moment, can't be fixed/14:21
BLZbubbait's not senseless, this is a major bug if init doesn't kill zombies14:22
Craigwelltheteju: yup14:22

SixtyFoldAnyone have a link to a tutorial about building a DE on a headless ubuntu install... IE, you need to install windows manager, display manager, file manager, terminal, all the components needed to get from headless to a fully functional GUI etc?14:23
Craigwellbrycetd19m: nothing stands out to me. Something isn't happy. I'd basically start by googling the various hardware and ubuntu compatibility to see if something is a known issue. Otherwise, are you trying a LTS distro? Often better driver support or less issues generally.14:23
k1lBLZbubba: no i will not google for something when you cant even provide proper details but just keep on ranting.14:23
Craigwellmzaza: you need to backtrack and see what packages were installed and remove them one by one i think. try to see what's flagged to start on boot, go from there14:24
Craigwellanyways, my boy just woke up. I'm afk for now. good luck folks14:24
brycetd19m14.04 lts 13.04 lts 12.04 lts and the 10.xx and 9.xx a14:24
brycetd19mAll have the issue14:24
k1l13.04 is no lts. and versions prior to 12.04 are not supported anymore on the desktop14:25
BLZbubbak1l: did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed or something?  please calm down14:25
brycetd19mI know there all compatible I have once been able to boot normally and got a incomplete cpu support message14:25
brycetd19mHence why I know full well that the package I need is in the restricted sources and as is the lan driver.14:27
Craigwellyeah brycetd19m My guess is cpu driver issue, but could be related to mobo / chipset drivers..14:27
Craigwellbrycetd19m: yeah some of the stuff ends up being proprietary (like my broadcom issues) and you need to plumb around it. Not much canonical can do when manufactures wont license to them or provide info ./ open source stuff.14:28
Craigwell*manufacturers that is14:28
brycetd19mThat would make sense. But intel drivers? I figured it would support it from the box14:28
Craigwellbrycetd19m: I'm thinking more chipset. maybe not directly the processor itself. I never had i5 issues with my E6610ATG14:30
Craigwellanyway, boy's rattling his crib14:30
brycetd19mMhmm as far as I know I have an Intel chipset. I know the first windows 8.1 retail release did have the same issue as ubuntu has but it was patched within a few weeks.14:31
CptRageToasterbrycetd19m: GPU issue?  or CPU?14:35
brycetd19mCpu issue14:36
CptRageToasterhave you tried booting to "recovery" mode or whatever it's called?14:36
brycetd19mI would if I could even boot it takes 4 hours + to pass grub.14:37
CptRageToastersee that's what gets me14:37
tdannecyI don't know how to explain what's happening here, so I'm having an issue Googling it to find out what's the problem with my Ubuntu server. Can someone help me fix this visual issue? http://i.imgur.com/wVJPqOx.png I'm connecting through putty on Windows with the default settings.14:37
CptRageToasterYou can't blame ubuntu for any problem that occurs in grub14:37
CptRageToastergrub is what's in charge of booting the linux kernel for ubuntu14:38
brycetd19mBut the problem still happens in ubuntu and if I use another boot loader I still have the same issue.14:38
CptRageToasterso... if your grub has issues, then it can't be a problem with your kernel14:38
CptRageToasterso then what your experiencing is much more system-wide than just "Ubuntu doesn't work with my processor"14:39
CptRageToasterWhile the above is a true fact14:39
CptRageToasteryou ALSO have issues with grub14:39
CptRageToasterand potentially other bootloaders?14:39
CptRageToasternot certain14:39
CptRageToasteris your firmware up to date on the mobo?14:39
CptRageToasterbrycetd19m: ^14:39
CptRageToastertdannecy: Are you seeing that on a monitor plugged into the machine?14:40
CptRageToasteror did you ssh into the server?14:40
brycetd19mDoes not explain how windows was able to resolve the issue with in Ina week of launching windows 8.1. The mobo currently reads that it is fully up to date. The mobo had to be updated to even run my cpu.14:40
CptRageToasterbrycetd19m: Windows is in charge of it's bootloader14:40
tdannecyCptRageToaster: That's in Putty over ssh.14:41
CptRageToastertdannecy: I don't know what the problem is exactly, but try switching everything over to UTF-814:41
CptRageToasterYou can make that change in putty, but you ALSO have to tell your server to use it14:41
CptRageToasteralso, I meant to use its* 4 messages up14:41
CptRageToasterbrycetd19m: I'd contact support for your mobo, citing issues with grub, and the specific linux kernel your trying to run14:42
tdannecyCptRageToaster: Bingo. Thanks.14:42
CptRageToastertdannecy: :D14:43
DJonestdannecy: I've had the same problem in the past, it is the UTF8 change that needs to be made14:43
brycetd19mYes......maybe I'm over looking something but I know at least one of the 3rd party boot loaders had no issues and but the second ubuntu loaded it would grind to a halt. Completely understandable when the Os only sees 256mb ram and 400mhz cpu as the max/min.14:43
tdannecyDJones: Yep! Thanks for the help!14:43

newguyis anyone avalible to help on a small issue iam having?14:48
CptRageToasternewguy: Just ask a question14:49
CptRageToasterand if someone knows what's up, they'll answer after a while14:49
newguyok  i downloaded ubuntu desktop and i used win7 to extract it (yes iam on windwows)  when i extract it i dont get a image file  just a folder with a bunch of files   what am i doing wrong?14:51
dark_wats up14:51
dark_hey '14:52
DJonesnewguy: You don't need to extract it, you just need to burn the iso to a dvd or onto a usb stick14:52
CptRageToasternewguy: Did you download a file that ended with the .iso extension?14:52
Number5Hello guys, how can I set DNS permanently so it won't lost after reboot? If I want to edit it in /etc/resolv.conf, I see a comment in the file which says that this file will be overwritten. So what am I suppose to do?14:52
CptRageToasterNumber5: Are you using the networking GUI thingy?14:52
CptRageToasterI think that's just called "Networking"14:52
DJonesnewguy: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick#Creating_a_bootable_Ubuntu_USB_flash_drive_from_Windows14:53
CptRageToasterNumber5: or are you using /etc/network/interfaces14:53
Number5CptRageToaster, not personally but a collegue with limited experience in Linux environment has installed it.14:53
CptRageToasterYou can set DNS in the GUI14:53
Number5CptRageToaster, it is using GUI14:53
CptRageToasterotherwise, if you don't have that package installed, then you'll have to add the DNS entry to the adaptor entry in /etc/network/interfaces14:54
Number5CptRageToaster, yes but after reboot the DNS is cleared or overwritten with nothing14:54
newguyi downloaded it from their website  iam going to try pointing the linuxlive stright to the un extraced download14:54
ikoniaNumber5: thats becauuse it's being supplied by your dhcp server14:54

CptRageToasterI suspect that the user borked their installation of the GUI somehow...14:55

tgm4883CptRageToaster: the files inside /etc/resolv.conf.d/ ? What package would autogenerate those files?15:03
CptRageToasterif that's correct, then they're in the same boat.  Number5 said they could configure the DNS properly, but the change wouldn't stick for some reason after reboot...15:03

cfhowlettGuest74957, so dpkg -l | grep nvidia | pastebinit returns this url http://paste.ubuntu.com/10679143/16:45

brycetd19mOkay I've found a sort of answer to my ubuntu clock problem. But as soon as I set the multiplier back to normal the system will respond the same as before.17:10

k1l_brycetd19m: that sounds like a really strange bug with the mainboard17:11

k1l_brycetd19m: what gives you "uname -a"?18:40
daftykinsbrycetd19m: two choices then, 1) download nvidia driver from their website and install (not the best idea) or 2) add the xorg-edgers PPA (google will find it and show you how to add it) then install nvidia-346 with "sudo apt-get install nvidia-346"18:40
k1l_noah123: because you can only go for 4 primary partitions. like i said before18:40

k1l_noah123: make a "extended" partition instead of the "primary" logical one. than put the new ubuntu partitions into that extended18:41

k1l_brycetd19m: some adapters involved?19:02
noah123So what should I type in all fields?19:02
daftykinsbrycetd19m: oh well, bit more effort needed to get the TV going maybe. you can also try cold booting with only the HDMI connected, DVI out - and see if it gets it wrong then too19:03

EriC^^noah123, no, read that page it will make things very clear for you20:01
geemili@genii: the partition was on a laptop where the hard drive was making sounds. I am looking into getting a new hard drive, but I want to retrieve some data from it.20:01
EriC^^noah123, then use the installer to partition, forget cfdisk20:01
geemili@genii: It was a physical failure20:02
daftykinsgeemili: if you really care about said data, trying yourself would be a very bad idea20:02
geniigeemili: So in this case, your best bet is to find another hard drive which is larger than the one which is failing, attach it by way of either usb enclosure or similar, then use ddrescue to pull off what you can to the good drive20:02
geemilidaftykins: It's not essential that I get it back20:03
geniigeemili: ddrescue is similar to dd but will keep copying even after it hits unreadable areas. so then you do the ddrescue to an image file on the external drive, then later from an intact linux system mount the image file and get what you can from it.20:04

CptRageToasterwe'll use the s command20:31
CptRageToasterto find/replace20:31
CptRageToasters/old/new/20:31
CptRageToasterso, to find all of the \ characters20:32
CptRageToasterwe need to escape them20:32
CptRageToasterso our old=\\20:32
Bray9082_So it has to replace it with another character?20:32
CptRageToasterour new... is empty20:32
CptRageToasterso we say20:32
CptRageToasters/\\//20:32
CptRageToasterwhich replaces all \\ with20:32

CptRageToasterBray9082_: So, now that we know how the s command works20:33
CptRageToasterBray9082_: We need to tell sed to do this as many times as it can20:33
perlawho is on chat with me20:33
CptRageToasterBray9082_: on each line, as many times per line20:33

ikoniaEriC^^: they won't be able to update the grub boot loader, so won't be able to boot the new kernel, and if the old one is removed as part of the update, won't boot at all22:16
EriC^^ikonia: but he can still boot his os, and run update-grub though can't he?22:17

ikonialocsmif: it can only deal with optionals22:20
ikoniaEriC^^: no it wouldn't22:20
EriC^^ikonia: doesn't update-grub run after a new kernel is installed?22:21

Ben64Desez2tPunk: but we'd like to know why it worked, a pastebin would help22:22
ikoniaEriC^^: yes, but he's not updating that OS - he's updating the other OS which has no control over grub as the config files are in /etc on the first os22:22
EriC^^ikonia: i mean to install grub on the os he uses primarily22:22
ikoniaEriC^^: right, and how does that help when he tries to update the second OS ?22:23

TiKyou can just do it in bash23:25
skinuxI can, yes, but it is nice to be able to move files around using nautilus.23:25
TiKi guess23:26
Ben64skinux: you should set up /var/www so that you can copy to it with your own user, and there should not be a need to copy things so often into /opt that you need nautilus to always run as root23:26
EriC^^skinux: yes, call it what you want, change it's Name=nautilus to gksu-nautilus or something, and remove the --new-window from Exec=23:26
