SporkWitchTonius: if i had to guess it's related to the reason you can't stream videos via smb either.  your choices are likely to either use an NFS or CIFS mount (if possible), or to copy the file, save locally, then copy it back.04:32
ToniusI can`t use something else, because smb servers under windows, it`s big corporative network04:34

SporkWitchTonius: i haven't dug into it myself, and only have other linux machines running smb to test again.  like i said, if i had to guess, i'd say it's related to why you can't stream video directly over the smb share either, at least on the linux side.04:36

__danmac__ya i just got a new laptop and im dying for it to release17:28
__danmac__not as far as i know17:28
__danmac__oh actually yeah, april 16th17:29
__danmac__https://wiki.kubuntu.org/VividVervet/ReleaseSchedule17:29
__danmac__release is on 23rd tho, so i wouldnt get too excited about that17:29
__danmac__guess i will go back to spamming F5 on cdimage server then :P17:32
rwwor just download a daily image?17:33
__danmac__ya but i know what will happen, i will blow 1.2 gig downloading a daily, and right after the download finishes, beta 2 will be out :P17:34
__danmac__not sure how much difference there is between yesterday's daily, and the beta-2 but i will probably install and run it for quite some time, so im playing it safe17:35
__danmac__ish17:36
__danmac__:)17:36
ryshthen just do apt-get update and apt-get upgrade ... and be happy :-)17:37
__danmac__to be fair, there's probably no difference between daily and beta-2 but will see when the drive from this new laptop finishes wiping ...17:38
__danmac__i did hear of some issues if you pick a non-US timezone in the installer though, hoping they've nailed that17:38

BluesKajVB has issues with neta 217:48
__danmac__wicked :) i can handle that, think i will risk btrfs too at this point, 14.04 btrfs was terrible but from experience at least the 3.18 kernel is much more stable17:48

drwI've been using 15.04 on my laptop regularly now for about a month. They're some bugs I have encountered, but they are KDE bugs, not distro specific ones, generally17:51
BluesKajplasma 5 has some problems for sure , it's still too green17:52

__danmac__don't mean to let you all in on more than you care to know about me ahahah18:11
darthanubistoo late18:11
BluesKajI ran freebsd a while back , it was ok ..nothing special IMO18:12
__danmac__it's not the magic bullet for everything, but it does have some features that make it more useful than linux under some situations18:13
__danmac__netflix use it heavily for good reason18:13
__danmac__and ZFS is quite frankly a gorgeous creation18:13
__danmac__linux is only just catching up in a lot of areas, for instance until recently linux didn't really have an answer for jails, or a decent "next-gen" filesystem18:14
sparasiteCan I create an extended partition using cfdisk and create the Kubuntu partitions in there?18:52
sparasiteusing cfdisk18:52
__danmac__hi sparasite, the installer will allow you to create or modify partitions, maybe easier than using cfdisk18:53
sparasiteIt doesn't allow creation of extended partitions18:54
sparasitethat18:54
sparasitethat's only possible in cfdisk*18:54
sparasiteCan I create an extended partition using cfdisk and create the Kubuntu partitions in there?18:55
sparasitewould that be fine? Cause I have 3 partitions already18:58
BluesKajsparasite, try gparted, it allows extended/logical partition creation18:58
sparasiteOk, so can I create an extended partition using GParted and have Kubuntu on it?18:59
BluesKajsparasite, yes18:59
sparasiteBluesKaj: What partitions shall I create in it? (And shall I create the partitions in installer or Gparted?)18:59
__danmac__sorry sparasite was afk19:00
sparasiteOk19:00
__danmac__you can definitely make extended partitions using the installer19:00
sparasiteHow?19:00
__danmac__when you click create you should get the option to create primary or extended19:00
Walexsparasite: the installer works like all installers in two phases for "partitions"...19:00
__danmac__urrr maybe it's called "logical" but i'm pretty sure those are the same thing19:01
sparasiteIt's logical or parimary19:01
sparasiteprimary*19:01
Walexsparasite: first it creates the "partitions", then it assigns mount points to them.19:01
sparasiteIs logical same as extended?19:01
__danmac__yeah i believe so19:01
sparasiteBecause it doesn't work with installer19:01
Walexsparasite: if you create the partitions before the installer, or whatever, you can skip the phase where it creates "partitions" and go dirtectly to assign mount points.19:01
sparasiteOk19:02
__danmac__i'll tell you in a few minutes i just installed with 1 primary and 1 logical19:02
sparasiteOk, can I create the extended in GParted also?19:02
Walexsparasite: "logical same as extended?" strictly speaking yes, but in a sense that most installers ignore. The practical answer is "YES"19:02
__danmac__yes you can create the partitions in whatever tool you want, but the installer will do the same thing anyway19:03
Walexsparasite: you can only create a single "extended" partition, and then you can create many "logical" partitions within it.19:03
BluesKajsparasite, my method is to create the partitions with gparted , for example / and /home and even swap , then i just choose the moutpoints with the ubiquity installer using manual partitioning19:03
Walexsparasite: traditionally the "extended" partitions must be number 4.19:03
sparasiteI see19:03
Walexsparasite: then all the "logical" partitions that you create within it are numbered 5 or greater.19:04
sparasiteBluesKaj: Is 80 GB unallocated space in an extended partitions enough?19:04
sparasiteto install19:04
BluesKajplenty19:04
soee_sparasite: hey, so you didn't installed it yesterday ?19:04
sparasiteWhat partitions do I need?19:04
sparasiteBluesKaj19:05
BluesKajsparasite, as I posted above19:05
sparasiteOk, how big should every be?19:05
sparasiteswap, /, and /home19:05
soee_swap ~ 4-6 GB for you, / ~ 20GB, /home - rest19:06
sparasiteOk thank you19:06
sparasiteSo root shall not be around 70 GB?19:06
Walexsparasite: usually 'swap' is not necessary, '/' between 20GB and 40GB depending how much stuff you want to install (even less than 20Gb for a non-desktop), and /home the rest as <soee> says.19:07
BluesKajpk too many cooks19:07
sparasiteOk, but I want some swap19:07
BluesKaj20G is too bif IMO 15is enough for /19:07
BluesKajbig19:07
sparasiteIs 20 GB too big? Won't it work?19:07
BluesKaj15G for / , swap should be equal to or abit larger than your RAM and the rest goes for the /home19:08
Walexsparasite: it is usually better to separate "Ubuntu" stuff from "your" stuff, so you can reinstall or modify "ubuntu" stuff independently of "your" stuff.19:08
WalexBluesKaj: but we are mostly agreeing...19:08
sparasiteWalex: ?19:08
sparasiteBluesKaj: So 60 GB for /home? xD19:08
Walexsparasite: "ubuntu" stuff => '/', "your" stuff -> '/home'19:08
soee_sparasite: this is how i have it on my lap: http://wstaw.org/m/2015/03/26/workspace18.png19:08
BluesKajsparasite, yes , 60G is good19:09
sparasiteOk, so 6 GB swap, / 15 GB, and /home 60 GB and all with gparted?19:09
sparasiteThanks soee_19:09
soee_as you see i have already ~ 15 GB used on /19:09
soee_so imo, you shoudl set 20 GB19:09
soee_i do not use swap, as i have enough ram19:10
Walexsoee_: or even bigger... Depends on what one wants to install, how many desktop environments, how much documentation, ...19:10
soee_Walex: true19:10
Walexsparasite: for example development packages take a lot of space often enough, if you want to compile programs etc.19:10
soee_Walex: but he has only 80 gb to use for all, so 20 seems resonable19:10
sparasiteI can have 100 GB also19:11
sparasiteIf that's the case...19:11
sparasiteI just need to shrink the C: some GB's more19:11
sparasitesoee_: I have 4 GB RAM19:11
Walexsparasite: <BluesKaj> is perfectly right that 15GB is amply sufficient for a desktop, but that's for a fairly "lean" desktop. A server can be installed in less than 5GB...19:11
BluesKajsoee_, he 's not going to fill up his / partition even at 1519:12
soee_sparasite: i know, thats why BluesKaj suggested max 6 GB swap for it but imo its to much19:12
soee_set ~ 4 GB19:12
sparasitesoee_: so 20 GB root, 4 GB swap, and the rest of the 80 GB /home?19:12
soee_sparasite: sure, BluesKaj agree ^ ?19:12
sparasitelol xD19:13
Walexsparasite: the differences here are not very big...19:13
soee_Walex: +119:13
soee_sparasite: kubuntu will work, trust me :)19:13
sparasiteOk I will use that19:13
BluesKajI'm in no mood to quibble , just making sure there's room for media data etc19:13
sparasiteShall all paritions be logical and formatted?19:13
soee_:D19:13
sparasite;D19:14
WalexBluesKaj: sparasite: you can also mount the NTFS/MS-Windows partitions and put stuff in subdirectories there.19:14
soee_sparasite: set / and /home to ext4 and mark to format19:14
Walex'ext4'???19:14
sparasitenot format swap?19:15
WalexI am a fan of JFS or XFS, but admittedly 'ext4' is the "safe" choice. But it is a quibble.19:15
Walexsparasite: swap actually has to be formatted too.19:15
sparasitesoee_: was the extended partition created in gparted? (on your pic)19:15
BluesKajsparasite, yes format to linux swap19:16
sparasiteOk and this should be done in gparted? or installer?19:16

sparasitesome lines up19:16
BluesKajthis is where we disagree , it's alot easier to install after setting the partitons up in gparted IMO19:17

travnewmatici have a question about KDE connect, i can go from phone to kubuntu, but i've got no option to send in the contextual menu on my desktop20:08
=== kevin is now known as Guest1747
__danmac__sorry travnewmatic i never used KDE connect, it's fairly new, looks cool though :)20:10
__danmac__can anyone hazard a guess why my transparent konsole is not working on 15.04 ?20:11
__danmac__hmmm works in xrender but not in opengl 2.0 ... :(20:13
soeetravnewmatic: i think thers no such feature atm20:17
soeeyou can only browse phone files and copy/paste them this way20:17
travnewmaticsoee, its totally a feature20:23
travnewmaticits just not a feature for me right now :D20:24
travnewmaticsoee, http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/06/kde-connect-android-notifications-linux-desktop20:24
soeetravnewmatic: hmn, interesting20:26
travnewmaticthough i'm wondering if this could be an issue with trusty20:27
soeethers no such context menu entry in Vivid20:28
travnewmatickde connect is installed?20:29
travnewmaticand your phone is paired?20:29
soeetravnewmatic: yes. in vivd you will have kdeconnect installed by default20:30
MoonUnit`wish the linux pushbullet app was better20:30
travnewmaticoh wow20:30
soeeone second ill check if phone is connected20:30
travnewmatichow stable is vivid20:31
soeetravnewmatic: ok confirmed, in vivid it works20:31
travnewmaticwell thats pretty dope20:31
soeewe can send to phone when connected via context menu20:31
travnewmaticright thats how its supposed to work20:31
soeeso maybe trusty has some older version20:32

travnewmatic0.5.2.120:48
travnewmaticso its a bit behind20:49
travnewmaticdoes vivid use plasma 5?20:49
MoonUnit`yes20:49
travnewmaticoh hell20:51
travnewmaticwell what issues is anyone having with it20:52
travnewmaticplasma 4 has quite a bit of polish20:52
MoonUnit`baloo 100% cpu on one core is a common problem20:54
travnewmaticwell20:54
travnewmatici know baloo is super active post install because its indexing everything20:55
travnewmatici've noticed that on earlier installs20:55
MoonUnit`plasmashell and Xorg taking up 40% cpu <- not sure if thats a common problem.20:55
travnewmaticmhm20:55
travnewmaticskype still in the partner repo?20:56
__danmac__I just installed 15.04, can't seem to get OpenGL working ... (nvidia 7900)20:56
travnewmaticpoop20:57
soee__danmac__: works fine for me :)20:57
soee__danmac__: what happens if you set OPENGL ?20:57
__danmac__well the card is only capable of opengl 2 anyway, i tried setting O1 and O2 and doing kwin_x11 --replace but it fails to enable compositing whatever i do20:58
MoonUnit`travnewmatic: yes, just checked. though partner repo wasn't enabled for some reason.20:58
__danmac__think O1 is deprecated now anyway20:58
travnewmaticMoonUnit`, im not surprised that they're disabled by default20:59
__danmac__the new look is fantastic, would be a shame to have to put 14.04 on it ... (new laptop hehe)20:59
soee__danmac__: jes o2 is minimum21:00
travnewmatici wonder how much i can get away with if i just install vivid to / and not format /home21:00
soee7900 is pretty new card ?21:00
travnewmatici'd be nice not to have to setup eeeeverything again21:00
__danmac__soee: installing it was an effort, there was corruption, some text didn't appear but hovering over buttons made them appear21:01
MoonUnit`i installed the numix icons, looks less boring. breeze is a bit too plane for my liking.21:01
__danmac__soee: noooo mate 7900 is years old21:01
__danmac__soee: when i said new laptop it's new to me haha :) off ebay21:01
soee;D21:01
__danmac__nouveau driver causes all sorts of corruption which was a nightmare while installing, but the nvidia proprietary driver seems much better21:03
__danmac__ironically, kwin seems happy to use the compositor with nouveau even though it's a total mess, but won't even entertain the nvidia drivers ...21:05
linuxguyIm trying to install Kubuntu 15.10 plasma 5 with a 1gb nidia card, are there any codes i should use to boot to live cd?, as I just get a black screen thnks21:18
linuxguy>>nvidia21:19
soeelinuxguy: so you dont see any content just black screen all the time ?21:20
__danmac__lol welcome to the "nvidia doesn't work for me" club21:20
linuxguyto both yep.a blasck screen :21:20
__danmac__try nomodeset21:20
__danmac__and assuming you get into the installer, near the beginning are two tickboxes, "third party bla bla" and "download updates" tick both of those and it should download the nvidia proprietary drivers, which have a better chance of working when it comes to reboot after install21:22
__danmac__i assume you gave it a few minutes at the black screen and saw absolutely no activity from usb or whatever you're booting from? it can take a while to boot from installation media21:24
linuxguy__danmac__, Ive tried nodemodeset to, and Ive never tried to install kubuntu 15.10 plasma 5, because I cant use livecd21:24
__danmac__nomodeset21:24
linuxguyIve got no activity from either booting from cd or usb :(21:24
__danmac__right?21:24
linuxguyyep nomodeset21:25
__danmac__on the kernel line where you put nomodeset, try removing "quiet" and "splash" if they are there21:26
__danmac__quiet should be, not sure about splash21:26
linuxguyI was wondering wether it was the graphics crad being a 1gb 9599GT?, I do have a spare G210 512mb I could try?21:26
__danmac__9-series should be fine, I haven't tried with 15.04 but I have a 9800GTX+ that works fine with 14.0421:26

SporkWitchso i made some tweaks to /etc/pulse/default.pa and /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf to set my sound card as the default output and USB default input.  after a reboot, it worked, steam (and games launched from it) and wine (and games launched in it) used the correct main output and didn't claim exclusive access so i could still play video or music in the background.  after another reboot, the files23:53
SporkWitchstill show my changes, but now it's back to steam and wine trying to use my headset instead of main speakers...23:53
