MtIbtiexlinux is shit. on windows i can just drag'n'drop app to start menu, even in windows9504:13
bbonifieldhey all, i’m working with a CI setup, and i’m trying to cache metadata between builds to speed up container setup.  when you do an `apt-get update`, where does apt store the resulting repository information cache?04:13
daftykinsMtIbtiex: don't use that language here thanks. go back to Windows then :)04:13
MtIbtiexdaftykins i cant, other person forced me to linux04:14
daftykinsMtIbtiex: then they're your support :)04:14
Minkiobbonifield: If you need to manage a lot machine then you can set up a local apt mirror04:15
MtIbtiexdaftykins b but   its hard to contact them04:15
MtIbtiexi want start menu shortcuts now04:15
MtIbtiexor i switch to windows04:15
bbonifieldMinkio: well, this is running inside Circle CI, so i don’t have control over that04:15
MtIbtiexlast warning04:15
daftykinsMtIbtiex: don't get converted by people that can't back up their opinions :)04:16
daftykinsMtIbtiex: yes go switch to Windows, goodbye, we don't care04:16
Minkiobbonifield: no, i mean you can say have a VM or physical node that host the local apt mirror and let other machine that need the repository to download from it04:16
MtIbtiexdaftykins but its complicated and need much effort to convert that VM to windows04:16
daftykinsMtIbtiex: don't act like we owe you anything, this is a volunteer channel.04:17
daftykinsa VM? ok i'm done speaking to you04:17

daftykinsi certainly don't do those things. your attitude is horrible04:17
daftykinsgoodbye.04:17
MtIbtiexmaybe if linux start mouse support04:17
bbonifieldMinkio: yeah, i understand that.  Circle CI is a turn-key CI provider, so i don’t have access to persistent VMs.  that’s why i’m just trying to cache data to pre-load onto the VM during setup/teardown04:17
Minkiobbonifield: I don't know then, sorry04:19
bbonifieldMinkio: yeah, all i’m really wondering is where apt stores it’s repository information cache.  like when you do `apt-get update`, it has to store the metadata somewhere.  i’m just not sure where.04:20
Minkiobbonifield: as far as i understand, the apt stores a list of locations of repositories but it doesn't store much else. That's why everytime you apt-get update you either need internet or have the DVD-rom connected04:22

ikonialook at the software raid config you are using, make suure sda is in the mirror, not raid 510:47
MaddoScienceI'm doing raid on partitions though10:48
ikoniathats fine10:48
ikoniaso is /dev/sda including a partition that is included in raid 510:49
MaddoSciencehow do I check a list of the partitions on every drive from the installer console?10:49
ikoniayou should see it in the partition gui10:49
MaddoScienceI'd do fdisk -l usually but I don't have that there10:49
MaddoScienceah ok I'll go back to the partition gui then10:50
MaddoSciencesda, sdb, sdc, sdd are my drives, each has two partitions set to raid, one used by md128 (the raid 1) and one by md127 (the raid 2)+10:52
pikaciuwhen  i dual boot with win and ,during installation, i choose manual partition instead of automatic,  my ubuntu partition should be mounted as '/' or 'boot' ?        thanx10:52
ikoniaMaddoScience: so you have 4 drives in a raid1 mirror ?10:53
ColtonDRGpikaciu: It should be /10:53
pikaciuColtonDRG,  thanx10:53
ColtonDRGpikaciu: /boot/ is where the kernel and bootloader go10:53
MaddoScienceikonia: no, I have 4 drives in which I made the same partitions and then set these as raid devices10:53
pikaciuColtonDRG,  ok.... because i did so and my win disappeared :/  ...10:54
ColtonDRGpikaciu: You might want to also consider making a seperate partition for /home/ so you won't lose all your stuff if you decide to nuke your Ubuntu install10:54
MaddoScienceI didn't raid the drives themselves10:54
ikoniaMaddoScience: you just said you had 4 disks with 2 partitions on each10:54
ikoniaso that means you have 4 partitions on 4 drives as member of a raid 1 mirror10:54
pikaciuColtonDRG,  ok10:54
MaddoScienceon each drive partition 1 belongs to one raid device, partition 2 belongs to another10:54
MaddoSciencesorry I'm not explaining it correctly but I don't know the terminology well10:54
ikoniaMaddoScience: right, so if you have 4 partitions with 1 partition belonging to the raid 1 mirror, thats 4 disks in a mirror ?? and 4 disks with a raid 5 stripe10:55
MaddoSciencemaybe I should just take a pic of the list10:55
pikaciuColtonDRG,  so... sda1=wn    , sda2=linux as 'root',   sda3=swap , sda4 = home ... right ?10:56
pikaciuwin10:56
bekksThat will use all primary partitions, which is not a good idea.10:57
ColtonDRGpikaciu: sda1 should be NTFS with no mountpoint (uncheck the "Use this partition" box)10:57
ColtonDRGpikaciu: sda2 should be ext4 with mountpoint "/"10:58
pikaciuColtonDRG,  cool.... i didn't know that10:58
ColtonDRGpikaciu: A swap partition is really unnessasary unless you have less than 4 gigs of RAM, so you don't need that.10:58
ColtonDRGpikaciu: And sda3 should be ext4 with mountpoint "/home"10:59
pikaciuColtonDRG,  im resuming a pentium III    :-P10:59
pikaciuuahauhaauhahah10:59
BluesKajHowdy all10:59
ColtonDRGpikaciu: If you really do need swap, it should be the last partition.10:59
pikaciuColtonDRG,  ok10:59
bekkspikaciu: Yeah, that sounds like the pain having to work with a P3. ;)10:59
explodesI have 8 gig of ram, and 8gig of swap :| how do i remove my swap safely11:00
ColtonDRGpikaciu: Also, you will probably need to use an extended partition due to disk limitations.11:00
ikoniaexplodes: what do you mean ?11:00
pikaciuColtonDRG,  you mean Logical ? right ?11:00
explodesikonia: actually never mind11:00
ColtonDRGpikaciu: Yes.11:00

bogdan_archip_ i to clean everything i neted 1st or 2nd?13:07
archipbogdan_ if clean everything means nuke the entire disk and everything in it(every partition) then its erase disk13:08

archipbogdan_ yes it will erase all files on the selected disk13:09
archipinculding the system13:09
bogdan_so actualy means that both options are kinda same thing13:10
archipbogdan_ the second option will also erase any other systems (in case you have dual booted) or any files in any other partition, practically cleaning the entire hard drive13:11
archiperase ubuntu will just touch the part of the drive allocated for ubuntu13:11
anjo-aladiahhowlett:            its worked! But now the menu its funny, instead of saying Lubuntu , its Says Ubuntu, and get more options related to windows !13:14

bekksBlueking: And?16:06
Bluekingbekks doesn't it imply that bug are within router and not access gateway ?16:06
bekksBlueking: Simulating losing packets by pulling the cable is not a good test. The kernel provides a module for testing loss of packages.16:07

BBLLCC[Device] [Mount Point] [File System Type] [Options] [Dump] [Pass] << thats the structure of a general fstab command. DO I have to write all fields to make it work? I only need to rename a mount point22:10
bekksBBLLCC: you need to write all fields.22:11
BBLLCCufffffffffffg22:11
daftykinsit's really not a hardship22:11
bennypr0fanedaftykins: I mean: when the image is written to a flash drive, it can be booted/there is a bootloader. Some have called this property of an iso image as "hybrid". I thought it was basically about the fact of having or not having a bootloader in it, but it was then fiercely argued that no, it's about the image being hybrid or not. I've heard it in other places too, but to this day I don't understand what it means precisely22:11
BBLLCCbekks, this is to rename back an external hdd. For unknown reasons it changed its name (the mopunt point)22:11
daftykinsbennypr0fane: alright well i'm not touching that with a bargepole. just "sudo dd if=/path/to/your.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=2M" where sdX is the flash drive.22:12
daftykinsif the image is bootable, it shall become so22:12

jhutchinsbennypr0fane: By "hybrid", they mean that the image can either be used as an installer or a "live" image that you can boot and run the actual OS from.22:27
BBLLCCone last question22:28
BBLLCCthis external HDD is full, id like not to lose anything. If I execute the command, will I lose anything?22:29

jhutchinsbennypr0fane: I'm not aware of any distros that don't have a bootable installer.22:30
BBLLCCunplugged power cable22:30
jhutchinsbennypr0fane: unetbootin will not make a bootable image out of a non-bootable one.22:30
BBLLCCall i can think about22:30
jhutchinsbennypr0fane: Nope.22:31
bekksBBLLCC: "unplugged power cable" does not even describe what the old mountpoint was, etc.22:31
BBLLCCbekks, volume-4 was the old mount point22:31
jhutchinsbennypr0fane: Several years ago most installers were just installers.  Knoppix was one of the first live images that also had an install option.22:31
BBLLCCbekks, volume-41 is the new mount point22:31
BBLLCCbut I didnt change it22:31
bekksThats because the directory volume-4 already exists, because it wasnt unmounted cleanly.22:32
BBLLCCok, can I somehow cleanly unmount it now?22:32
bekksBBLLCC: Just use umount.22:32
bennypr0fanejhutchins: here I think they are using it in the sense I described: http://superuser.com/questions/351814/how-to-copy-an-iso-image-onto-usb-with-dd22:33
BBLLCCbekks, sudo umount volume-4 <<<?22:33

huigi have a live usb with ubuntu22:56
pdilyardalright, I have no idea how I just did this, but while messing around with sudo users, I must have removed myself from the list of sudoers on my 14.04 machine22:58
warrhttp://www.maketecheasier.com/fix-dual-boot-issue-with-yosemite-ubuntu/22:58
pdilyardwhen i run "id"22:58

huigwarr: i tried it and doesn't work22:58

huig_i am now with the ubuntu live usb23:00
warrhttps://discussions.apple.com/thread/662431723:00
pdilyardit's just that the root password is locked and I'm at a remote location23:01
pdilyardso I was wondering if there's any way to get sudo back without recovery. my user is in the "root" group if that's helpful23:01
huig_warr: thanks, but i have already seen that. if i can run ubuntu or find the files using the live usb with ubuntu then i will be ok23:02
d2lphilyard: If you have root access, you could try: usermod -aG sudo <username>23:02
bekksPolyNightmare: No, there isnt, since you cant get root privileges otherwise.23:02
daftykinspdilyard: oh, hah.23:02
pdilyarddaftykins: haha yeah not great23:03
