EightHey03:32
EightI've got this crazy bug, or something.03:32
holstein!bug03:33
ubottuIf you find a bug in Ubuntu or any of its derivatives, please file a bug using the command « ubuntu-bug <package> » - See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs for other ways to report bugs.03:33
EightNot an actual bug per se, prolly just something misconfigured03:33
EightWhen I unplug my X61p, the brightness can't go as dim or as bright as when it's plugged in.03:33
EightAny ideas where to start?03:34
holsteinthat can be hardware related.. i would check the bios, and then, i would probably test with live iso's, to see if other software, and kernel versions "act" the same..03:34
EightAlright. I did recently replace the backlight, but it seems too weird to be hardware...03:35
EightEspecially since I can make it go nuclear bright on battery,03:36
holsteinEight: sure.. using a live iso will bypass your installed OS and "configuration"..03:36
EightKk. Will check to see.03:37
holsteini would want to know, did it behave that way before and/or after i changed the hardware03:37
holsteindoes it behave that way with the officially supported operating system and drivers..03:37
xubuntu49wwould like some help figuring out if my computer specs will support xubuntu03:48
holsteinxubuntu49w: sure.. i say, just load up the live iso and see how it runs03:48
xubuntu49wthat is a great option, however, some of the drivers for my hardware were very difficult to install on linux mint. i'm hoping that the drivers will be easier to get and install on xubuntu. currently i have an amd athlon 64 3700+, nvidia geforce 8400gs, 2 gbs ram and a 200 gb hdd.03:50
holsteinsure.. no need for hope, really.. just load it up and try it03:51
holstein!nvidia03:51
ubottuFor Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VideoDriverHowto03:51
holsteini like to try the open drivers first, that are included in the live iso...03:51
xubuntu49wi tried that and everything was a bit slow with mint.  switched to the propriatery drivers and it sped up with direct rendering issues. fixed that problem just to find that some of the games i want to play are not starting up.  was told that i need an ubuntu 13.04 at the least. not sure if linux mint 13 is derived from ubuntu 13.0403:54
holstein!13.0403:54
ubottuUbuntu 13.04 (Raring Ringtail) was the 18th release of Ubuntu. Support ended on January 27, 2014. See !eol, !upgrade and http://ubottu.com/y/raring03:54
holsteinits end of life03:54
holsteinyou'll want 14.04, the LTS...03:54
holstein!lts03:54
ubottuLTS means Long Term Support. LTS versions of Xubuntu will be supported for 3 years. The current LTS version is !Trusty (Trusty Tahr 14.04)03:55
xubuntu49wok, will it still support older hardware despite being a newer version of ubuntu?03:55
holsteinor, !14.10, the latest release03:55
holsteinyou'll be able to install 14.04, from the live iso i refence you should try, and you'll be able to test the graphics with with open driver, and then add a proprietary one if needed03:56
holsteinxubuntu49w: try it and see if your hardware supports linux03:56
xubuntu49wok.  thank you for the advice, will load up usb iso for testing.  best program for making bootable usb on linux?03:57
holstein"best" is always a matter of opinion03:57
holstein!info unetbootin03:57

holsteinor whatever ^ suggests03:57
EightHeyo03:57
EightDoes it in vista too.03:57
EightJust some weird ardware behavior/intel driver03:58
holsteinEight: are you talking about the screen brightness?03:58
EightYerp.03:58
holsteinsounds like it could be related to your hardware replacement, then, or bios related. i might look for a bios update03:58
EightJust did that.03:59
EightI thought that it'd might be that.03:59
EightIt's just weird since I can force it to go full brightness.04:00
EightAnyway, thanks for your time.04:00
xubuntu31whello, so i tried the live iso of xubuntu.  but now i cant install it.  i get the errno 5 message.  i had come across this message before when i was installing linux mint 13 and was able to bypass it and installby typing "obiquity no-migration-assistant".  i tried that with the live version of xubuntu 14.04 and now the live installer wont start at all. i'm not stuck running xubuntu off of a usb stick.05:22
xubuntu31wany help would be great05:22
xubuntu31wive searched google high and low.  i have found many threads with the same issue, but no one seems to have solved it, or posted a possible solution that will work for me.05:25
gnumbknuts"error: gfxboot.c32: not a COM32R Image" . It would seem that this problem still persists in Xubuntu; ref to bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usb-creator/+bug/1325801 .06:06

matt_keysSince yesterday my xubuntu/xfce desktop continually prompts the logout/restart/shutdown dialog. If I hit cancel it pops right back up. service lightdm restart worked yesterday but now it is not working to clear. If I reboot the machine it prompts to log out as soon as I log in.14:48

m3n3chm0hi all guys, After a few minutes Xubuntu freezes and I can't use the mouse or keyboard.. i'm using kernel 3.17.0-031700-generic.. this issue is being happening since the last week18:30
m3n3chm0any clue ¿?18:30
holsteinm3n3chm0: so, it doesnt happen with an older/different kernel?18:31
holstein!tty18:31
ubottuTo get to the TTY terminals 1-6, use the keystroke ctrl + alt + F1-F6 respectively (Alt+F7 will get you back to your graphical login).  To change the resolution for your TTY, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ChangeTTYResolution18:31
pmjdebruijndid canonical start a new kernel numbering scheme?18:31
m3n3chm0i guess with the previous kernel all worked fine18:31
holsteini would go to tty, or try, and try and see what is locked.. kernel panic, or just the GUI..18:31
holsteinm3n3chm0: i would test with the older kernel in your grub list. otherwise, it could be some hardware component broken causing your issues..18:32
ObrienDavepmjdebruijn, canonical does not dictate kernel version numbers18:33
pmjdebruijnit does18:33
pmjdebruijn"3.13.0-48-generic" is not a upstream version18:33
pmjdebruijnthey suffix it18:33
holsteinthe kernels are repackaged.. the kernel team18:33
holsteinits the same "source".. and version #'s..18:34
pmjdebruijn'3.17.0-031700-generic' just seems to deviate from the previous suffixing scheme18:34
pmjdebruijnholstein: well and a shitload of local patches IIRC18:34
holstein!langauge18:34
ubottuThe main Ubuntu channels require that you speak in calm, polite English. For other languages, please visit https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IRC/ChannelList18:34
pmjdebruijnah sorry18:34
pmjdebruijnmy bad18:34
holsteinyou can ask the kernel team.. though, most "patches" afaik, are from upstream as well..18:34
holsteinsecurity patches, for example18:35
pmjdebruijnsure cherrypicks18:35
Unit193Yes, Ubuntu does carry Ubuntu patches.18:35
m3n3chm0sorry ¿?18:35
m3n3chm0this kernel contains bugs ¿? or what ?18:35
pmjdebruijnm3n3chm0: every kernel ever made in history contains bugs18:36
pmjdebruijnfor any operating system18:36
m3n3chm0in addition i'm using propietary Nvidia driver .. maybe i'll test with open nouveau driver as well in order to check if the issue persists.. :)18:36
holsteinm3n3chm0: is the older kernel working for you? if so, then, its likely *something* with the newer kernel, that *can* be related to your specific hardware, and not a "bug" causing your issue18:36
pmjdebruijnheh18:36
m3n3chm0ok18:37
pmjdebruijnexcluding the nvidia blob driver is indeed probably a good idea too18:37

MadcapJakeInstalling Xubuntu 14.10 and formatting and resizing some partitions.  The installer has been stuck on "Creating ext4 filesystem for /home in ..." for almost 2 hours.  Is it frozen? (I'm getting a slow feed of Glib.source_remove warnings in the console, like one every ten minutes)18:40
* pmjdebruijn would guess so18:41
pmjdebruijnI'd check dmesg on a terminal18:41
julf_4that18:41
MadcapJakecan i access a terminal inside installer?18:41
pmjdebruijnCtrl+Alt+Fx18:41
pmjdebruijnnot sure which number18:41
MadcapJakeok18:42
pmjdebruijnjust try them :)18:42
pmjdebruijnyou'll find it :)18:42
MadcapJakeyeah found one, what am i looking for in dmesg/18:42
pmjdebruijnno clue18:42
MadcapJakexD18:43
pmjdebruijnyou don't see anything obvious? probably at the bottom of the log18:43
pmjdebruijnlike disk errors or something?18:43
pmjdebruijnalso18:43
MadcapJakegotta look a bit deeper, looks like wifi stuff at the tail18:43
pmjdebruijndoes 'ps axuf | grep mkfs.ext4' show you anything?18:43
MadcapJakeyeah18:44
pmjdebruijnsoemthing like mkfs.ext4 /dev/sda1 ?18:44
MadcapJakeyep18:45
pmjdebruijnso then it is still running18:45
pmjdebruijnm3n3chm0: how large is that partition?18:45
pmjdebruijnwhoops sorry18:45
MadcapJake~70 GB18:45
pmjdebruijn70GB shouldn't take 2 hours18:46
MadcapJakeyeah i did resize it though, just a little bit too xD18:46
MadcapJakeand moved it actually xD18:46
MadcapJakeso this is just my fault then i'm guessing lol18:47
pmjdebruijnhuh?18:47
pmjdebruijnmoved it?18:47
julf_4steam wont start for me, i'd' be thankful for help18:48
MadcapJakewell i had a swap and a home ext4 partition at the end of my drive, i deleted both, and set the swap to end of space and then set home part to rest of space beginning of space18:48
MadcapJakeso i swapped the swap and the home part's space in the drive18:48
pmjdebruijnjulf_4: did you try starting it from a terminal? did you get any output?18:49
pmjdebruijnjulf_4: which version of xubuntu are you on?18:49
julf_4yeah i did, i can message it to you18:49
julf_4im on 14.04 lts18:49
MadcapJakenot sure if that's why, but seems plausible, i read somewhere that resize op adds a fair amount of time18:49
pmjdebruijnjulf_4: put it on pastebin18:49
pmjdebruijnsteam works fine for me on 14.04 lts btw18:50
pmjdebruijnMadcapJake: not sure, I've never resized anything...18:50
MadcapJakepmjdebruijn: if i abort, do you think i'll destroy the hard drive?18:51
julf_4here's the error output i get in the terminal http://pastebin.com/bLY3mk0i18:51
pmjdebruijnMadcapJake: "destroy"?18:52
MadcapJakemake it unbootable, damage other partitions on drive18:52
pmjdebruijnjulf_4: try 'rm -Rf ~/.steam', do note, that will delete anything from an old steam install, so you might lose some steam related stuff18:53
pmjdebruijnMadcapJake: that disk is ALWAYS there if you mess around with partition, even if you don't abort18:53
julf_4pmjdebruijn, didn't' work, still the same error18:55
pmjdebruijnwhat does 'dpkg -l | grep steam' tell you18:55
pmjdebruijnparticularly the version18:56
pmjdebruijnjulf_4: ?18:57
julf_4pmjdebruijn, http://pastebin.com/k6iwg8t118:58

pmjdebruijnbecause that's not in the repositories?18:59
julf_4not sure..19:00
pmjdebruijnwell it didn't get there on it's own19:00

carreraI just have one question now, namely has much changed in 15.04?22:10
knomeyes.22:10
carreraso it's worth the upgrade22:11
knomewell if it's worth or not depends on your usecase22:11
knomeif you want a very stable system, then likely not22:11
carreraI love Linux in general and Xubuntu in particular and I'm using it on my own laptop22:12
carreraused to be a C, Perl and Java programmer but not since 200522:13
knomeglad to hear you like xubuntu22:13
carreraI love it!22:13
knomeif you want to have a more general chat, we have #xubuntu-offtopic for that; and we're active there right now as well :)22:13
carrerait took people on this channel, a little convincing back in 2013 to switch me from Ubuntu22:14
