lordievaderGood morning.07:04
alexbrrsclntis there a support channel in spanish for a quick question?08:34
lordievader!spanish | alexbrrsclnt08:34
ubottualexbrrsclnt: En la mayoría de los canales de Ubuntu, se habla sólo en inglés. Si busca ayuda en español entre al canal #ubuntu-es; escriba " /join #ubuntu-es " (sin comillas) y presione intro.08:34
alexbrrsclntkde desktop related08:34
alexbrrsclntthanks08:34
alexbrrsclntmaybe someone can help me, i'm using kubuntu 14.04.02 for almost half year at my work office. we have a very poor network connection at the office, and at the times it goes very bad, the  desktop plasmoids slows down08:39
alexbrrsclnti have a pretty good computer with 8gb of ram, so it's not a hardware problem08:40
alexbrrsclnti have the desktop effects on and no problem with them08:40
alexbrrsclnti can change form virtual desktop with the keyboard and go very fast, and the same when i change between apps with alt+tab08:41
alexbrrsclntbut the system tray, and other plasmoids go very slow when i use them with the mouse08:42
alexbrrsclnti am sure that the network connection is the problem08:43
alexbrrsclntbut i dont know how to fix it08:43
hateballThat sounds strange indeed08:44
alexbrrsclntmaybe anyone have read about it?08:44
hateballWhat are the "other" plasmoids?08:44
alexbrrsclntbtw sorry for my english :P08:44
alexbrrsclntthe kde menu (alt+f1)08:44
hateballI dunno if maybe you have network folders in an applet, or weather or something... but still I've never had such a problem when offline08:45
hateballalexbrrsclnt: Can you see if any process uses a lot of CPU when this happens?08:45
alexbrrsclnti dont remember the name in english, the bottom bar with all the apps you are running08:45
lordievaderTake a look at vmstat, there might be io wait involved.08:45
alexbrrsclntwait, i check monitor08:45
alexbrrsclntplasma-desktop procces is using 125Mb of ram08:46
alexbrrsclntnormal amount08:47
hateballYes, and RAM is not CPU :)08:47
hateballAnyhow, this would only be relevant when you have a bad network connection08:47
alexbrrsclntoh cpu, sorry08:47
hateballAnd what lordievader said is good08:47
alexbrrsclnti executed vmstat in konsole08:49
alexbrrsclntcan i paste the result here?08:49
alexbrrsclntprocs -----------memory---------- ---swap-- -----io---- -system-- ------cpu-----08:49
alexbrrsclnt r  b   swpd  libre búfer caché   si   so    bi    bo   in   cs us sy id wa st08:49
alexbrrsclnt 2  0      0 1398596 405408 2210628    0    0    72    42  225  880  4  1 93  2  008:49
alexbrrsclntthat is a yes, hehe08:50
lordievaderalexbrrsclnt: You need to keep it running and look at the 'wa' column when a slow down happens.08:50
hateball!paste | alexbrrsclnt, for future possibly long pastes08:50
ubottualexbrrsclnt, for future possibly long pastes: For posting multi-line texts into the channel, please use http://paste.ubuntu.com | To post !screenshots use http://imgur.com/ !pastebinit to paste directly from command line | Make sure you give us the URL for your paste - see also the channel topic.08:50
alexbrrsclntok, sorry08:50
hateballNo harm done :)08:51
alexbrrsclntwhat would be a normal value for the 'wa' column?08:55
alexbrrsclnti see 93 everytime i run the command08:55
lordievaderalexbrrsclnt: It's shifted, you are likely looking at the idle times. Having an io wait of ~90% is bad.08:56
alexbrrsclntok, running vmstat 1 i see new values each second08:57
lordievaderShould be less than 20%, preferable even less than 10%.08:57
alexbrrsclntthe 'wa' columns shows always almost 90%08:57
alexbrrsclntthat bad i think08:57
alexbrrsclnt:P08:57
lordievaderAs I said, you are probably looking at idle times. Second column from the right.08:58
lordievaderNot 3rd column.08:58
alexbrrsclntoh, that is a lot of diference08:59
alexbrrsclntvmstat shows 0, 1, or 2 values08:59
lordievaderalexbrrsclnt: Could you pastebin some recent output of vmstat?09:00
alexbrrsclntyeah, wait09:00
alexbrrsclnthttp://paste.ubuntu.com/10711065/09:02
alexbrrsclnthere it is09:02
lordievaderOh, that looks quite okay.09:03
alexbrrsclntfyi, at this moment, my network is going very bad, so the only way to change between apps is using the alt+tab, try to select with the mouse from the running apps panel goes for a long wait to see the effect and to make the change09:05
lordievaderDoes the io wait change?09:06
alexbrrsclntwhich colum i have to look for? io > bi | bo ?09:07
lordievaderalexbrrsclnt: Still the same, wa, second from the right.09:07
alexbrrsclntok, no, it shows the same value, always under 409:08
lordievaderHmm, here when the taskbar freezes it is usually a hang on an nfs mount.09:09
alexbrrsclntit's not freeze, its going very slow09:09
alexbrrsclnti dont know how to explain09:10
alexbrrsclntit responds, but you have to wait a lot to see the action run09:10
alexbrrsclntthe same if you click in the virtual desktop09:10
alexbrrsclntwhen changing with ctrl-f1 ~ f4 is almost instantaneus09:11
lordievaderPerhaps there is something in the logs, syslog or the xsession-errors log?09:12
alexbrrsclntwhere can i find xsession-errors log?09:13
lordievaderalexbrrsclnt: In your home dir.09:14
lordievader~/.xsession-errors09:14
alexbrrsclntthanks09:14
alexbrrsclntit has only 3 lines09:16
alexbrrsclntno related i think09:16
lordievaderThose are not errors, I suppose?09:16
hateballalexbrrsclnt: you dont have your /home mounted on NFS or something like that?09:19
alexbrrsclntno, something like 'script for none started at run_im' (it actually is in spanish, i made a pseudo translation :P)09:20
alexbrrsclnti started ksystemlog, i don't see anything that may be an error09:21
fcomtoishi everyone09:22
lordievadero/09:22
fcomtoisI just installed Kubuntu Beta 209:22
fcomtoisand I was wondering if you guys knew how to mount afp shares through dolphin ?09:23
alexbrrsclnt<hateball>no i have a normal instalation09:43
fcomtoishey guys, anyone around?10:27
lordievadero/10:28
lordievaderfcomtois: What is an afp share anyways?10:29
fcomtoisApple Filing Protocol10:32
lordievaderMeh, I know rarely little about Apple.10:34
fcomtoisyeah10:36
fcomtoisit's a relatively archaic protocol since it is my understanding that Apple uses samba nowadays10:36
mat619Hi there. I wanted to give 15.04 beta 2 a try on physical hardware, but it turns out I can't start the installer - seems I'm affected by this bug here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/143649711:16
ubottuLaunchpad bug 1436497 in ubiquity (Ubuntu) "Fails to start from kubuntu live session with failed to remove /run/udisks2/inhibit-polkit " [High,New]11:16
lordievaderAuch11:16
mat619anyone here got an idea how to work around that issue, so I can install it?11:16
lordievadermat619: Does the daily suffer from the same issue?11:17
mat619lordievader: no idea, didn't try yet. will do.11:17
mat619lordievader: downloading ISOs takes a while for me, sadly, so I'd rather find a workaround if there is one11:18
mat619since nobody mentioned any updates solving the issue in the bug report I'm also not sure if the daily would really make a difference11:19
lordievadermat619: Please do confirm the bug, and ask around in #kubuntu-devel11:19
mat619lordievader: will do, thanks!11:19
mat619lordievader: just have to make sure I can actually reproduce it, so will try it a few more times with other choice of boot params, locale etc.11:20
mat619lordievader: oh. here we go... not reproducable: just booted it another time (3rd attempt) with the same parameters, now it works. weird.11:23
lordievaderAh, could you report those findings in the bug report, though?11:23
mat619I will, if I can provide any useful info at all. Will give it a few more tries to track down the cause. Might be hardware related after all11:25
BluesKajHowdy all11:37
mat619one more question regarding 15.04: does the latest beta ship with a proprietary radeon driver? or an install helper for it?11:38
yossarianukmat619: looks like version - 14.201-0ubuntu2 011:41
yossarianukOne issue I have with ubuntu and variants is lack of the latest closed source GPU drivers11:41
yossarianukthey stick with older versions with known bugs in (and lack of h/w support) in the name of 'stability;'11:41
yossarianukits not like the devs can fix the version they 'support'11:42
BluesKajmat619, the default radeon is , xserver-xorg-video-radeon, on 15.0411:43
BluesKajthat's what muon shows as installed here on 15.04 , even though I use an nvidia gpu :)11:44
mat619BluesKaj: k, thx11:44
BluesKajso 15.04 is radeon ready I suppose11:45
sysop2can anyone help me with a possible man in the middle attack?12:00
BluesKajsysop2, how you know12:00
lordievadersysop2: Why do you think you are being MITM'ed?12:18
=== it is now known as Guest81827
sysop2not think, know.12:30
sysop2when I ssh into any box from inside my network or from work I get a different key then if I ssh from my phone.12:31
iconic2not know, do12:31
iconic2is your phone using your lan?12:31
sysop2can you think of another explanation? I really wish there was one.12:31
sysop2no. my phone is using the cell network. hard to believe the cell network is safer.12:32
iconic2just download a tor network app12:32
lordievadersysop2: Wich one is correct?12:32
sysop2the one on the cell network.12:32
lordievadersysop2: Do they resolve to the same ip?12:33
iconic2well you get a different key because I bet your phones os is different from your computer and thus making handshakes different for different creditentials12:33
sysop2that is not the case. no matter what username you connect as the key is always the same.12:34
lordievaderThe key should be the same, iconic212:34
sysop2so please stay out of this if you do not know what you are talking about.12:34
sysop2thanks lordievader12:34
sysop2lordievader, so what can I look for? what is man in the middling me on my own network?12:35
lordievadersysop2: Please do be friendly to the people trying to help you.12:35
lordievadersysop2: As I said, do they resolve to the same ip.12:35
iconic2Sorry, just suggestions12:35
sysop2sorry a little on edge.12:35
sysop2no the resolve to different ips internally and externally.12:35
lordievadericonic2: No problem, I'm glad you are trying to help :)12:36
lordievadersysop2: There is your problem.12:36
iconic2Yep two different locations12:36
lordievaderOr at least likely, the problem.12:36
sysop2but that only affects how the key is looked up in known hosts. I am deleting known hosts before I connect to see the error.12:36
iconic2you should make it easier on yourself and setup a proxy server so that your comp and phone use the proxy and end up tied together12:37
sysop2the key wont change just because its being called from a different ip.12:37
lordievadersysop2: What happens when they connect to the same ip?12:38
sysop2hold on let me try connecting to the same ip brb12:38
iconic2Well when I worked for AOL I had different secure ID key for when I logged in while on campus then when I remotely connected to the campus servers12:39
sysop2nope same key12:40
sysop2same wrong key12:40
sysop2once I connect I do a ssh-keygen -l -f /etc/ssh/ssh_host_rsa_key.pub and the keys are different12:40
lordievadersysop2: How do the network routes look like?12:40
sysop2good question.12:40
iconic2I bet it has to do with hostmask12:41
lordievaderThe two routes I mean, one uses the cellular. What does the other look like?12:41
sysop2but how the traffic is routed wont affect the key?12:42
sysop2and there is nothing weird when I do the route command.  just my router being the defualt gateway and the .0 broadcast address.12:43
lordievaderIf they end up at a different server it does.12:43
sysop2true.  but everything in this case is going through the same router at my house.12:43
lordievadersysop2: Ok, you are going to need to explain your entire network setup.12:44
paul__.12:46
=== paul__ is now known as Outcast
=== Outcast is now known as Quokka
=== Quokka is now known as Cylon-Raider
BluesKajuhm, is there any chance you can settle oin onew nick12:47
BluesKajoops one nick12:47
sysop2lordievader, its pretty standard. just a netgear router and a couple of machine behind it.12:56
sysop2I have one that is a dedicated ssh server, thats where I first noticed the problem.12:56
iconic2I use a proxy server for all my i-net connections so that I keep the same IP and hostmask12:58
lordievadersysop2: Ok, take a random client somewhere on the internet. Am I correct in saying that the path is: client -> router -> server?12:59
sysop2yes12:59
sysop2that what it looks like12:59
lordievaderOkay, does your router run an ssh server?12:59
sysop2no12:59
lordievaderI suppose the router nats?12:59
sysop2its just a plain netgear13:00
sysop2yep13:00
iconic2his gateway is off13:00
lordievaderAre the portforwarding correct?13:00
sysop2yes13:00
sysop2my geteway is the router locally.13:00
lordievadersysop2: Does your server see incoming ssh traffic when you try to connect from the outside of your network.13:00
sysop2how would i tell?13:01
iconic2the logs13:01
sysop2netstat?13:01
iconic2what type of server software are you ssh into?13:01
sysop2i see what you are saying, so if when I am at the accept the key stage of logging in I look and see if there is a connection on the server?13:02
sysop2hold on I am trying another internal machine right now.13:02
iconic2search for your ip13:02
lordievadersysop2: tcpdump13:04
iconic2ohhh nooo! its 9am time to punch the time clock and start scripting13:06
sysop2DAMN IT! it was the wrong key the whole time. sorry guys was upset over nothing.13:18
sysop2I was ssh-kengening the wrong key thats what the problem was so ofcourse it was different.13:19
sysop2thanks for the help and sorry iconic2 for snapping. was actually hacked a couple of years ago so I tend to be vigilant.13:20
iconic2No problem, I'd be the same way13:21
iconic2We actually did get hacked at the new mexico campus, thats where the servers were that had all the clients account from phone numbers to addresses to credit cards to account pw's13:22
sysop2UGH!!13:22
iconic2thats when I suggested they make that part of the network out of bounds unless you use the proxy server that would give you a specified IP that was trusted by multiple layers of security13:23
sysop2I feel you. knocking on wood but never lost any private data. they just used our machines.13:23
sysop2I see what you mean now. thats not a bad idea. still switching to keybased to avoid having the problem entirely.13:24
iconic2mind if I ask what type of connection your server is hooked to?13:24
iconic2an OC?13:24
iconic2optical carrier line?13:25
sysop2just my home server this time.13:25
sysop2work probably has on OC3 or something.13:25
iconic2may I make a suggestion?13:25
sysop2sure13:25
iconic2if your running a open source Network Operating System and you plan on hosting shells make it so them clients can't excute any commands that could invoke a ddos or sorts of attack because them give you hefty fines13:27
sysop2who gives the fines?13:27
iconic2The attacked ISP13:28
=== cloud is now known as Guest54318
sysop2ah,  well already working on that. anytime a file is created in the shell I am using inotify to run a script to see if its an executable then it deletes it if it is. since its kernel based it happens instantly. no time for time to use the file.13:29
sysop2no time for them to use the file I meant.13:30
iconic2I made the mistake when I was running a rackmount out of my business space on an oc12 connection and a shell client excuted a ddos attack on a ip and I was called up as the Host of client to either pay the fine or get sopena'd by court order to reveal client information so they could hand down some sort of punishment13:31
iconic2like if you use a cell signal blackout device its 250,000$ a minute per line you black out13:31
iconic2we rectified the problem out of court by paying a 15k restitution fee which I doubt the attacked ips hardware cost anywhere close to that amount13:33
sysop2thats kind just plain stupid about the cell line, if I  owned a movie theater and setup a cell blocker to keep people from using their cell phones during the phone I get would get fined, but if I use metal paint to coat the walls I dont. same affect and if it only affects your property I dont see why they should have an opinion.13:34
sysop2during the movie.13:34
lordievadersysop2: Good to hear you found the problem ;)13:35
iconic2now on all the servers I bring up I load my personal assistant  bg procc that monitors activity and if the cmds are bashed or even close the client is sent the kill command with a prompt that says connect host imediately13:35
sysop2thanks lordievader13:42
lordievadersysop2: No problem ;)13:43
sysop2this will show all your public keys and not just one! for i in /etc/ssh/ssh_host_*_key.pub; do ssh-keygen -l -f  $i; done14:52

iconic2hiya Xenxxx15:26
XenxxxI was unaware there'd also be a chat, but not surprising :).15:26
Xenxxxheya :)15:26
iconic2I'm taking a break to many lines of coding done15:27
XenxxxI am so in love with Kubuntu these days :), but I am also downloading the Gnome Ubuntu 15.04 now..15:27
Xenxxxnice :)15:27
Xenxxxor at least I might check it out, the Gnome version15:28
iconic215.0415:28
iconic2?15:28
Xenxxxinstead of the Unity version then.15:28
Xenxxxyeah15:28
iconic2damn I'm behind15:28
Xenxxxwell I am just using 14.10 but.... I don't know, I just enjoy it trying the new version I guess :) ... :p15:29
XenxxxI had attempted Kubuntu 15.04 when it was alpha 2 but i was a bit disgruntled with the interface15:29
Xenxxxso many things that didn't work... right.15:29
Xenxxxwell just things that didn't work I guess, dunno.15:29
Xenxxxwhen I went (back) to 14.10 things worked much better in the task bar etc.15:30

xenxxyo man :). What have you been coding? :).16:09
xenxxwithout the closing dot lol16:09
xenxxi sometimes lose the sense of knowing what and when to write ;-)16:10
xenxxkinda annoying :( ;-)16:10
xenxxi am trying to get Steam running on this old laptop on Kubuntu 14.10, not very successful thus far. .... :(16:11
iconic2Well right now I'm trying to bring eggdrop software up to date16:11
iconic2I got steam running on my lenovo thinkpad16:11
iconic2i516:11
xenxxso you are coding for IRC? (I just looked it up)16:11
xenxxor is eggdrop a kind of server also?16:12
iconic2eggdrop is a bot16:13
iconic2like ya know them weatherbots16:13
iconic2or ones that do trivia or protect channels?16:13
xenxxso were you writing scripts for it or writing its source?16:13
xenxxyeah i know, I guess I heard about it before16:13
xenxxpopular thing to run16:13
xenxxbut I' ve never been much of an IRC guy16:14
=== mkv is now known as m4v
iconic2Well thats why we're bringing it up to date16:14
iconic2Gotta try to make it work on different chat like relays16:15
xenxxminus the space, I've never been.... I have to get used to this new keyboard layout that actually *gasp* can write " and ' in one go.... ;-)16:15
iconic2like minecraft servers and such16:15
xenxxright so you are actually source coding16:15
iconic2unfortunately16:16
xenxxsince it has a lot of scripts you know, I see, so you might as well be writing scripts IN eggdrop instead ... ;-) :)16:16
iconic2last friday/sat morning I got done with my duties on the unrealircd software rewritting services16:16
xenxxi once wrote some scripts in TinyFugue, I guess it can be similar....16:16
xenxxright16:17
iconic2tcl scripts16:17
xenxxi just wanna do some wiki or documentation translation for now16:17
xenxxright16:17
iconic2I know thats what I'm affraid my next appointment is going to be16:17
xenxxhehe16:17
xenxxi have no appointments but I wanna get active16:17
iconic2I want eggdrop to start using lua scripts16:18
iconic2If you write a tcl script that does something interesting I'd be more than happy to set you up with a way to submit it for review16:19
xenxxright, those are the game scripts right16:19
xenxxno i mean in writing documentation for now, or doing some translation on that16:19
xenxx...16:19
iconic2They dont have to be just game scripts16:19
iconic2you can do some great stuff with tcl16:19
xenxxi mean lua16:19
xenxxso why the change to lua then?16:20
iconic2Lua is more up to date and compiles a bit quicker16:20
xenxxwhy is lua so great? :)16:20
xenxxright16:20
fcomtoisdoes anyone have experience mounting afp shares via dolphin?16:20
xenxxwhat is afp?16:20
fcomtoisapple filling protocole16:20
fcomtois*protocol16:21
xenxxa fixed point16:21
iconic2but I gotta either re-write the whole eggdrop source or do it cheaply by making a tcl interpeter script for lua16:21
xenxxokay16:21
xenxxhehe16:21
iconic2Protocol16:21
iconic2see my eyes are getting way to slow16:21
xenxxbut these are usually libraries you include, right? Some interpreter?16:21
xenxxooh it's what they use to call AppleTalk16:22
xenxxbut having to tie the interpreter to the inborn commands can be hard I guess, or a lot of work.16:22
iconic2Well it doesnt have to be a library it can just be a hard script that does it all in the background, but since they want it up to date i fear im stuck redoing source to accept lua16:23
xenxxit can be hard16:23
xenxxoh16:23
iconic2right now I'm building a plan of attack16:23
xenxxyou must be a hard and fast coder then16:23
iconic2on this project16:23
xenxxyeah16:23
xenxxyou're the kind of guy i make friends with ;-)16:24
xenxxthe kind of guy i meet in games and so on ;-) ...16:24
xenxxhaha16:24
xenxxat least sometimes I come across guys like you16:24
iconic2Im way to busy to help to much but I do what I can16:25

ErtheI just tried to update to KDE Plasma 5 following the instructions found here:  http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kubuntu-14.1017:18
ErtheI can't login to the system, KDM with my old configuration appears briefly and then the display goes into power saving mode.17:19
ErtheWhen I performed the install step I chose sddm as the new DM.17:20
ErtheIs it possible to run a repair from the ISO for 14.10?17:20
iconic2yup repair from local medi17:21
iconic2a17:21
ErtheOK, I'll grab the ISO and give that a go.17:23
RiddellErthe: don't use plasma 5 with 14.10, that was only tech preview and is now deprecated17:40
RiddellErthe: just install 15.04 beta 217:40
ErtheOh...17:40
ErtheJust finished burning a disc too :D17:40
ErtheI'm on Nvidia, I just read your mailing list post17:41
ErtheCan I update with that ISO?  I don't want to lose my /home directory17:43
ty812does someone have a good idea how I can make Gqrx play audio?17:48
ty812I got a signal on the waterfall, but there's no sound.17:49
ty812alternatively, if anyone knows where I can discuss SDR-related problems, I'm also grateful for such a pointer17:49
MoonUnit`do you have the squelch too high?18:04
=== mike is now known as Guest94108
MoonUnit`i think something is bad with the latest vivid sddm update, machine desktop dying after a few seconds of logging in.20:04
MoonUnit`lots of taint messages in dmesg, now rolling back to an earlier partition image20:04
xennex81question: what do you know about being able to run plasma4 style "themes" (like Air) (or Oxygen) on plasma5 for Ubuntu 15.04?20:18
xennex81it is said that the Breeze Dark theme is very nice, but Breeze "Light" is too washed out for me or too little contrast.20:18
=== kubuntu is now known as Guest90218
daemon_erebusIs there any particular reason why Kubuntu comes with LibreOffice installed rather than the Calligra Suite21:37
=== cristiano is now known as Guest58788
keithzgdaemon_erebus: There's a belief (somewhat justified) that LibreOffice is more mature and feature-rich, so for folks that don't know they have options, that's probably the best default to ship.22:45
keithzgHmm that's interesting, using Chrome Remote Desktop hosted on Kubuntu 14.04, I get an Openbox session rather than a KDE session when I connect via the Android client.22:46
daemon_erebuskeithzg, you're probably right, just thought it interesting since LibreOffice uses a bit of gtk and Calligra is qt based (from what I understand) it made the better choice/option.22:47
keithzgdaemon_erebus: Yeah, Calligra is a more integrated and native experience, and IIRC it used to be shipped as the default instead (at least back when it was KOffice), but the rough edges and some user complaints drove a switch over to LibreOffice as the default. I still prefer Calligra's equivalent apps personally, and tend to have both installed.22:48
daemon_erebusheck I'd just be happier with better MS Office integration as formatting still comes off wonky in some instances22:50
keithzgThat's never going to really change. Formatting comes off wonky even between versions of Microsoft Word sometimes :P23:02
keithzgWe'll only really be safe if Microsoft Office goes away.23:02
misfit1hello, I'm having an issue with kubuntu constantly dropping wifi connection. 14.04 64-bit, Intel centrino wireless-n 1080 network card23:21
